If you are a Jim Brickman fan who believes it's just not hip to like John Tesh, Grand Passion could easily change your mind. Tesh, criticized at times for displays of bombast or excessive sentimentality in his compositions, here turns in a commendably restrained set of succinctly stated themes, many of them performed in a solo piano format--a surprising first for a keyboard artist who has nearly two dozen recordings in circulation. Tesh's economic compositions here feature structurally simple melodies that are uniformly likeable and, to the unjaded listener, truly touching. "Smooth jazz" radio programmers rarely, if ever, grant exposure to solo piano selections, so Tesh generated airplay by recruiting two R&B vocalists, James Ingram and Dalia Reid, to make guest appearances on two tracks, "Give Me Forever--I Do" and "Mother I Miss You," respectively. Nelson Rangell contributes saxophone to a quiet reworking of Tesh's familiar "Bastille Day," but beyond that Tesh goes it alone, delivering some lovely, thoughtful results in the process while consciously avoiding schmaltz. Ending "Song for Prima," a lullaby for his daughter, with a few high-register notes from "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" is a little corny, but an excusable digression considering the overall quality of this package. If pretty, well-conceived piano music is your passion, this is an album worthy of your attention. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars Yes, more than 2 DOZEN Releases!.......2006-01-24

For those who are unfamiliar with Mr. Tesh's work, or who think he is some kind of one hit wonder (there seem to be some here leaving reviews?) you should know that some of the best selling new age/Piano music in the WORLD has been John Tesh's. He has well over 2 dozen releases out right at this moment and because I sell CD's I can attest to the fact that they are still popular, even years after they're released.
Why? Because it's beautiful.
It may not ever be played at a school dance but it is beautiful. Some of it's mystical, some passionate, some relaxing an some is even jazzy, but it's all beautiful. So if you are just to young to understand the value (and rarity) of true beauty in all it's forms, don't leave reviews about music that you do not understand.
John Tesh is a talented pianist that is famous world wide. When you're a little older, climb in the tub, fill it with bubbles, turn on a John Tesh CD and sit back and enjoy as your mind fills with beautiful sounds. Then get out, dry off and come back and write your review.

2 out of 5 stars john tesh isn't so cool.......2002-12-10

I go this cd at the library as a joke, but the joke was on me, i found that john tesh isn't so great, i mean the cd wasn't horrible but really, why does this guy get to put out cd's? really? he's not even a real celebrity. The only song he's ever done that i like was the nba on nbc theme songs, you no what i'm sayin, yeah you know what i'm saying

5 out of 5 stars Tesh's Best Piano Compostions!.......2001-08-17

John Tesh may be better known from his days as co-anchor of Entertainment Tonight, but he is by far one of the most talented musicians of our time. An acommplished pianist, Tesh's passion lies therein. 'Grand Passion' is one of his best works, in my opinion. He plays with such conviction, the title of this cd is only fitting. He wrote all compostions on this, with the exception of the two vocals, "Give Me Forever (I Do)," and "Mother I Miss You," which he co-wrote with thier singers, James Ingram and Dalia Reid, respectivly. "The Homecoming" and "In A Child's Eyes" are also included on his debut Christmas cd, 'A Romantic Christmas.' (which by the way is wonderful too!) His grand piano solos on this cd are beautiful! They're so emotionally stirring. There are other instrumental accompaniment in some songs.....acousitc, bass & electric guitar, soprano & alto sax, drums & percussion, synthesizers, and some string arrangement. They really add to the depth of this recording.

Tesh's talents permeate beyond his piano playing & writing skills, and flow over into a vast knowledge of the music and it's origins. 'Grand Passion' is a great cd to relax with, or to work with for that matter. If you aren't familiar with John Tesh, the pianist, you're in for a real treat. He takes his music very seriously and it shows. He's also done a cd series called 'Pure Movies,' which of course are songs from popular movies, and he's also done some sports related music. But, I like his own compositions the best. Besides 'Grand Passion,' 'Winter Song' and his two Christmas cd's, 'A Romantic Christmas' and 'A Family Christmas' are great works too. If you're looking for some nice soothing music, this is a wonderful cd to pick. This one is included in my most relaxing cd's list.

5 out of 5 stars Another Example of John Tesh at His Best.......2000-10-22

This album has just what the title says - "Grand Passion." Tesh is a very passionate musician. The alum is all instrumental except two songs - "Mother I Miss You" and "Give Me Forever," both of which are good tunes. James Ingram sings "Give Me Forever" and sounds wonderful as usual. The other songs are a mixture of slow melodies of John on a "Grand." Some of the better songs on the album are "Grand Passion," "The View From Here," and "Dear Unknown." I actually put this CD in when I am studying and reading for school since it is soothing and helps me stay focused on what I am doing. This album, simply put, is very telling of the caliber of talent Tesh is capable. And this album is one of his better ones. Thanks John!!!

5 out of 5 stars John Tesh, you were totally unknown to me untill now........2000-08-04

I listened with attention to the songs you could listen to indicated by the 'note'-sign and I must say that what I heard pleased me. Your instrument is beautiful and you are very secure of what you are doing when you touch the 'Ebonies and Ivories'. I liked what I heard. Good luck to you. I take the opportunity to get back at a 'Baltimore music fan' as she, or he calls her- or himself, calling your music "quote 'Frankenstein Twit'(whatever that means, the last word that is). My answer: 'Sweetheart, you stick to whatever you like'. Get the message? Done and over with!

Classical guitar lovers looking for a jazzier change of pace shouldn't be disappointed by Nylon & Steel, Manuel Barrueco's album of duets with Al Di Meola, Steve Morse, and Andy Summers. But ironically enough, it's the two solo tunes that bookend this disc, Barrueco's "Odeon" and his solo guitar arrangement of Aaron Copland's "Rodeo," that are the real highlights. His three cuts with Di Meola are a mixed affair, but the interplay between the duo seems to gel on the longer "Azzurra." Steve Morse's electric guitar is loaded with Bill Frisell-like effects, but on "Wolvesville," he and Barrueco create an inspired and unleashed fusion between rock and classical music (the inspiration for the piece is a Villa-Lobos étude). Three mellow collaborations with Summers round out this set of intriguing guitar instrumentals. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars An Oasis of quality music........2005-04-14

The tracks on this recording vary from exuberant latin-american jazz - like 'Beyond The Mirage'- to more introspective music like 'The Grand Passion'. 'Northern Lights'is very sensitive as well, it makes you a little bit melancholic. Between all the noisy dance-music we have nowadays, 'Nylon & Steel'is an oasis of quality and high standard.(Though there is no classical music played on this cd - apart from Villa-Lobos - don't let that spoil the fun). Something about this music reminds me of the piano-music of Brad Mehldau: it sounds familiar and at the same time it's something new.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2003-06-04

I didn't think I would like this CD. However, after the first listen, I had to admit this is a fantastic CD!

4 out of 5 stars cool classical/rock/jazz fusion.......2001-10-29

This is a very interesting combination of the classical and rock/jazz worlds of guitar playing. All four guitarists have amazing chops and they're all quite tasteful on this recording. If you're a fan of Barrueco, DiMeola, Morse, or Summers, check out this CD. I had heard Barrueco and Summers before, and knew of DiMeola and Morse by reputation, so I had an idea of what to expect...but "Nylon & Steel" surpassed those expectations. Very cool, indeed.

1 out of 5 stars A Disaster.......2001-09-08

Except for the two Barrueco solos, this CD made me nauseous!!!Listening to it reminded me why I stopped listening to most improvised music.

Throughout tracks 2 to 4, DiMeola struggles futilely to come up with anything but comical latin cliches. DiMeola's mindless noodling is an affront to Barrueco's musicality. Summers playing on the other hand, while somewhat musical, is mostly syrup.

Villa-Lobos' Etude 1 duet hurt the most. I have played this piece for years and, though an etude, I find it quite entertaining (as do most classical guitarists I think). During most of the piece, Morse simply plays scale-exercise filler and obliterates all the musical ideas in the piece. Listen, Villa-Lobos was one of the most original and masterful composers of this century. It is criminal to think that playing this electronic fluff over Villa-Lobos' etude does it justice.

A word to the uninitiated - buy Sergio and Odair Assad's "Latin Music for Two Guitars" and learn something about the depth and beauty of serious latin guitar music.

After years of wondering whether, after Dom, Pav, and Carr, there would ever be another group of fine tenors available, the question has been answered with a resounding, "Yes!" Alagna and Vargas are realizing their potential, Florez is a spectacular bel cantist, and Villazon and Calleja are up-and-coming. And Marcelo Alvarez proves again on this CD that he has arrived. The voice is a full-grown lyric, his tone is gorgeous, he has brains and sensitivity, absolutely even production, secure, ringing high notes, and a youthful but not callow approach to the music. The Lalo aria is sung sweetly, with light tone; he brings out the heroics for "Cielo e mar," "Nessun dorma," and Chenier's last act aria; "Che gelida manina" suits his voice and temperament ideally and he brings wonderment (and a fine high C) to it; Don José's Flower Song is full of longing, in good French with nicely shaded phrases. In short, there's not a disappointing note on this recital--Alvarez is a smart, feeling tenor in his prime and this CD is highly recommended. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A surprisingly low key tenor........2007-03-13

This is one of the greatest contemporary tenors around, if not the only one.
I am so surprised that so few people have reviewed this collection of very popular operatic arias for tenor by Mr. Alvarez.
Well - it may be accounted for by the fact that Mr. Alvarez is neither TOO young, nor TOO handsome. Well, he is still reasonably young, and quite good-looking. But I wonder nowadays people go for looks more than voices in operas, hence the ultra-low profile of such an outstanding artist.
The album begins with some Puccini arias. I almost thought I was listening to Jose Carreras - especially the aria in 'Madama Butterfly'. No - Mr. Alvarez's voice is even sweeter than Carreras's in certain places upon closer listening: the 'Flower Song', for instance.
This is however a lyrical tenor. I don't think Mr. Alvarez should do those spinto roles or dramatic roles, even if you tend to reason with me that some of those roles were really 'over-done' before by big voices like Franco Corelli and Mario del Monaco.
Well, it may be so, but I've heard say that Mr. Alvarez is doing Il Trovatore, and only God will know if one day he will, like Carreras before him, do Aida's Radames (I honestly hope he won't do it). Otello is definitely not his cup of tea.
I've listened, and like his Nessum more than anyone else's. His opening aria from La Boheme is also fanatastic.Yes, he should not tackle those heavy roles indiscriminately, even if dramatic tenors are a bit hard to find these days.
I think bel canto suits him well, too. And I don't think bel canto roles should be dominated by just one or two tenors - audiences should have more choices, too, and Mr. Alvarez would be another very good option.

5 out of 5 stars The Next Generation.......2005-11-10

Alas, the days of Pavarotti and Dmingo have past, and as with all things under the sun, with the dusk of the old comes the dawn of the new.

This CD is an excellent harbinger of the "new" in the world of operatic tenors.
Marcello Alvarez has truly come into his own, and with his voice having reached full maturity, he is now poised to become one of the BIG names in opera.
At the onset of his career, I was not too taken with his then very light lyric voice, but he has taken great care of his instrument, and now I can say that he has become one of my favorite new tenors.

Although I prefer the more heroic tenor voices of the past i.e. Corelli, Del Monaco and Lanza, I am very impressed with each and every selection on this CD.

From "Che gelida.." to the showpiece "Nessun Dorma" there isn't one aria that he either over/or under sings. He nails it all!

This is a great new CD by a great new tenor.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Recording.......2005-09-30

Alvarez's voice, to borrow a quote from the last century, is "liquid gold". His effortless sound on the high C near the end of che gelida manina is pure and free. The only thing I found more impressive was the high C sharp that seemingly comes from nowhere in A Te, O Cara. As a tenor and a voice teacher, I must say I am jealous of the open and free sound of his top end. What a voice! What a recording!

I know there are some purists out there who will say, "He's no Bjorling" or whomever else, but this man can sing. He gives his own interpretation to these songs, which is a pleasant change from the canned "let's do it like . . ." He doesn't try to sing it like anyone but himself.

This CD will certainly remain a part of my collection.

5 out of 5 stars A glorious new tenor, Yu Qiang Dai.......2005-01-28

It was a big shock to hear Yu Qiang Dai's debut cd. He is, I think, the best lirico-spinto tenor nowadays. He has a lovely voice, which is very well produced. The center is wonderful, the lower notes are good, the high notes are shining and of fantastic quality... the singing through the passage is very well handled. He is an itelligent musical interpreter and singer, with an interesting and appealing line and sense of style. Very good dynamic changes. He offers some of the absolutely best renditions of some arias (nessun dorma and cielo e mar, for example) that I have heard in many years.

He still has to work his Italian (specially the consonants) and his French. But there were great historical tenors with bigger idiomatical problems.

Despite taking spinto repertoire, Yu never pushes, never tries to make the voice sound darker than it is, everything is always under control, and he takes the chance to give very stylish renditions (for example, of una furtiva lagrima), which is strange for tenors who "want to sing spinto".
The tenor is a fantastic discovery, one of the best ones around. Actually, all my criticism goes to EMI and the production of the CD: no choirs, no solists (for example, for the aria of Cavalleria, where the mother should sing her line), and the acoustic "atmosphere" has made some people to doubt if Yu's voice is really as big as it seems (people who saw his Cavaradossi at Covent Garden say that it is very big, actually).
Not a the best production job by the people of EMI, but five stars (ten if possible) for the singer. Simply wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Staying Abreast of the Gifted Young Tenors.......2004-11-25

THE TENOR'S PASSION may seem a contrived, Hollywoodesque title for a CD of the warhorse tenor arias from the operatic repertoire, but just wait until you experience the intelligent, understated rendering of these arias by gifted young tenor Marcelo Alvarez and you will discover what 'passion' is here.

Not all of the arias on this CD are overused: excerpts from 'Martha', 'L'Africaine", 'L'Arlesiana, and 'Le Roi d'Ys" pepper the usual suspects from Boheme, Carmen, Butterfly etc. But in many ways this programming is timely as it gives us a recorded view, at least, of just how much this voice has matured. His `Italian Tenor's Aria' from "Der Rosenkavalier" is utterly breathtaking as is De Grieux's aria from "Manon Lescaut". And hearing the sensitive phrasing and control of vocal resources in the ever popular 'Nessun Dorma', 'Che gelida manina" and the Flower Song substantiates the rumor that here is another star on the rise.

A beautiful recording this, and one to include on the shelf with favorite tenors before the public today. Grady Harp, November 2004

5 out of 5 stars A Feast of Historic Debussy Recordings.......2005-04-11

The Andante label has had a hit-or-miss record with its boxed reissues of historic recordings. Some have been fabulous (e.g., the two 'Fidelio' performances, boxed together, by Böhm and Furtwängler) and some not so good (e.g., the two 'Falstaffs' by Toscanini and Karajan--each far outclassed by commercially available alternative performances by these conductors). Each of these Andante sets appears to contain four CDs, a long and informative essay, plus bios of the important participants taken from the New Grove (in English, French and German) and all in a hard-bound book that is in a slipcase. A classy presentation.

This issue is one of the best I've run across. First, let me comment about the sound. Some of these recordings go back to the 1920s ('Rhapsodie' for saxophone and orchestra, with saxophonist Jules Viard, recorded 1929), most are from the 1930s, a few from no later than 1951. And every single one of them is in probably the best possible sound and in most instances it is astoundingly good. I swear that transfer and restoration engineers (and their software) are getting better and better and I, for one, am thrilled about that. (Unfortunately, these marvelous ladies and gentlemen are not mentioned by name, at least that I can find, in the otherwise extensive information provided about the recordings. Andante really owes it to them to name them.)

Let me simply list the contents (as of this date Amazon has not done so):

CD1: Prélude l'aprs-midi d'une faune, Walther Straram, cond. (featuring the meltingly glorious flute-playing of the legendary Marcel Moyse); Nocturnes, D.-É. Ingelbrecht; Nocturnes, Piero Coppola; La Damoiselle Élue, Coppola

CD2: La Mer, Coppola (1932); La Mer, Toscanini, NBCSO, (1950); La Mer, Désormière, Czech Phil. (1950)

CD3: Danses sacres et profanes, Marcel Grandjany (harp), S. Levin, cond.; Petite Suite (orch. Büsser), Coppola; Petite Suite (orch. Büsser), Henri Bsser, cond; Marche Écossaise, Toscanini, NBCSO, 1940; Le Martyre de St. Sébastien (suite), Coppola; Première Rhapsodie, Hamelin, clar., Coppola; Première Rhapsodie, Benny Goodman, clar., Barbirolli, NYPO

CD4: Rhapsodie, Viard, sax., Coppola; Ibéria, Coppola; Ibéria, Reiner, Pittsburgh SO; Rondes de Printemps and Gigues (both from 'Images'), Reiner, San Francisco SO; Printemps, Coppola

As you can see, Piero Coppola conducts many of the selections here. I had known his name and had heard a few of his recordings back in the 78rpm days, but didn't really remember much about him. Well, let me tell you, this Milan-born composer/conductor who spent most of his professional life in Belgium and France and who here primarily conducts the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, is magnificent. His 'La Mer' from 1932, for instance, ranks as one of the subtlest and yet most naturally unfolding of any I've ever heard and is certainly the equal of the other two 'La Mer' performances here (Toscanini and Désormière, each wonderful in his own right ).

Other highlights (actually there are almost too many to single out) include Goodman's 'Clarinet Rhapsodie,' Grandjany's 'Sacred and Profane Dances' (was there ever a harpist with a lovelier sound?), Moyse's 'Afternoon of a Faun,' both performances of the 'Nocturnes,' Büsser's 'Petite Suite,' Reiner's 'Ibéria' (whew! - what excitement in Mmt. III!), the two movements from 'Images' by Monteux.

Obviously, this is not an issue for anyone but a die-hard lover of both Debussy and historical performances. There are modern recordings of all of these works, in modern sound, and let's face it, the cost of this box set is pretty steep. But, if like me, you are committed to learning about the history of recorded music you will wind up treasuring many of those performances and this one is definitely one for your purchase list. I think it's worth every penny you'd spend because it will bring literally tens of hours of enjoyment.

Strongly recommended for the right audience.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A joyful Christmas box of many rare musical jewels........2001-12-10

Laserlight has the rights to so much recorded music - excellent, good, indifferent, bad - & of such varying sound quality, that it's difficult to rate the label's bargain compilations. Most are afflicted with "excerpt-itis," the "greatest hits" disease. However, some compiler with an interesting ear for the offbeat & a sense of humor put this fine five-CD Christmas box together. He or she did so by leaning on some less familiar music & by relying largely on good performances from ye olde East Germany ensembles & conductors, (as do Koch-Schwann & Berlin Classics labels, at higher prices).

The #1 disk is a solid performance of The Nutcracker Suite (also issued as a single disk by Laserlight) by Peter Wohlert conducting the Berlin Symphony (not to be confused with the Berlin Philharmonic). With that over-cooked chestnut out of the way, this compilation gets interesting.

We get some venerable excerpts of Bach cantatas, oratorios, motets & Lutheran hymns, performed by Fidicinia Capella, New Leipzig Bach Collegium Musicum, & the German Bach Soloists, all respectable ensembles. Edita Gruberova even joins in "Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen." Plus an earful of grand organ preludes.

Handel is represented by a happy section of "Water Music" & a piece for brass instruments from his oratorio, "Judas Maccabaeus." What, no "Halleluah Chorus?" Believe me, you don't need it! But it's here all the same.

Mozart checks in with the lovely, too brief, "Ave verum Corpus," motet for chorus, strings, & organ, K. 618. We also get snappy, dutiful baroque contributions from Vivaldi, Corelli & Purcell.

The remainder of the set is filled out with music from: Pavel Josef Vejvanovsky; Francesco Onofrio Manfredini; Johann Ludwig Krebs; George Friedrich Kauffmann; John the Elder Alcock; Michel Corrette; Michael Praetorius; Johann David Heinichen; Johann Heinrich Schmelzer; & Giuseppe Torelli. The inclusion of these marvelous obscurities pushes this bargain compilation over the top.

I give it four stars because the performances & sound quality vary considerably. But the compensation comes from hours of joyously felt Nativity music, a good deal of it unfamiliar yet beautiful all the same. Load all five into the CD changer, hit the random button, relax & enjoy your spiced eggnog with family & friends.

The five CDs are titled: 1. The Nutcracker 2. Classical Christmas 3. Christmas Music for Trumpet & Organ 4. Johann Sebastian Bach - Christmas Music 5. Baroque Christmas Music. They can be purchased individually.
