About the Artist
New Age composer Gene Newton has an interesting day job: he is an Information Technology Analyst for the State of Oregon. A former music and theater teacher for over two decades, Gene taught music and theater arts in Oregon and Washington. He taught public high school, directing concert choirs, symphonic choirs, jazz choirs and teaching courses in music technology. His jazz and choral ensembles were repeatedly awarded trophies and accolades at numerous competitions and festivals throughout the Pacific Northwest from 1982-1998. Newton changed careers in 1998 to afford him more time to devote to his composition and to his record label, NEZ Productions, which he started in 1993 with his first release.

Newton composes in his spare time, blending technical mastery with his innate creativity to create a distinctive, transcendent sound. He counts among his New Age musical influences Vangelis, Colin Chinn, Peter Buffett, Jean Michel Jarre, and Michael Gettel. "But there are many others I enjoy," he adds. "My favorite classical composers are Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Schumann, Schubert, Charles Ives, Chopin, and Stravinsky. I also love jazz and Broadway music. I really just let my soul do whatever music comes to it when I am composing; it is a very intuitive process that I try and stay out of the way of, at least I try and keep my ego out of the way."

Newton insists that every musical note he has ever heard has influenced his own compositions and style. While comparisons to others is natural, Newton has a uniqe style that is hard to pinpoint. Newton's first album, Celestial Plea, is dedicated to New Age seminar leader Wayne Dyer and is an ecclectic collection of compositions. Other celestial influences are obvious in Eternity, a musical journey through that realm, and Tarot: Music for Readings, a musical realization of the Carl Rohrig Tarot Deck. Elemental Suite, a musical interpretation of the elements, is the result of several years work and is his latest release.

Newton's music is difficult to classify into one genre. It easily crosses into several musical realms. It has elements of new age, jazz, orchestral, film, classical, electronic and space music. All four releases have received high praise and excellent reviews from many industry sources.

Product Description
The Rohrig-Tarot, a deck of Tarot cards expecially suited for our modern times, iknspired Gene Newton to create the music of this album. Using synthesizer, he interpreted the essence of these unique cards to enhance the ability of the listener to touch the message of the Tarot. The pace of the music is calm, yet full of expression. This album is especially good for meditation or just listening.

4 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity?.......2007-05-24

As some have already stated, this is neither a proper greatest hits album nor a true treasure trove of outtakes and alternate cuts. It's a little of both, and while one may be drawn in by the qualities of each, neither truly satisfies; one must fall back on the overall quality of the songs themselves to appreciate this offering.

Sadly, there is also a conspicuous absense of live material, but from the looks of it, he has just rereleased his Hollywood album with a second bonus disc of live acoustic tracks. Perhaps they coupled it with the Hollywood album to boost sales, but that bonus disc would have been better served here among his best songs.

4 out of 5 stars Not really a "Best of", but still pretty great..........2007-05-18

This compilation probably won't result in Michael Penn receiving a well-deserved (commercial) reassessment, but it's still pretty great. It's a happy surprise that Legacy approached Mr. Penn and asked for his input on the selections. Some may quibble about the preponderance of tracks from Resigned and MP4, but if that's indicative of how the artist feels about his catalog, it's hard to argue.

In arranging things by mood instead of chronology, the compilation serves certain, perhaps previously overlooked tunes very well- "Out Of My Hands", the alternate version of "Try" and "Brave New World" fairly grab the listener by the lapels.

This is a very idiosyncratic overview of Michael Penn's earlier output. Are any of the new, alternate or demo versions vital to the casual listener? Probably not. Nonetheless, Palms & Runes, Tarot & Tea is the rare compilation that seems to measure up as cohesive statement in any context. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection - neat alternate versions of songs.......2007-04-21

I am a longtime MP fan and have all of his albums. I bought this to hear the "remastered" versions of original songs, as well as the alternate versions. I can say that it is neat hearing the different versions of songs. However, I was a little disappointed that "No Myth" (which I think is the greatest song ever written) sounded pretty much exactly the same as it does on my 15 yr old CD of March. I thought it would sound better since it was "remastered." I was also hoping MP would have recorded an new version of it, or even included the awesome acoustic version.

MP also left off "This and That" which was his only other radio hit. I have heard that at his live shows, he refuses to play this song. I wonder if he has something against it because it is also an awesome song.

Overall, it is still a good collection, especially if you're a first-time Michael Penn listener.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Penn Fans, and a Great Introduction for the Uninitiated.......2007-04-18

Palms & Runes, Tarot & Tea is a collection of never-heard-before alternate takes, brand new versions of old favorites, and best-of-the-best album cuts -- selections from all five of Michael Penn's albums, spanning the course of more than 15 years.

This CD is so much more than your typical "Best of..." with Penn himself hand-picking the tracks, as well as the order in which they appear on the CD.

It's worth buying solely for its revamped version of "Cupid's Got a Brand New Gun" with a completely different feel from the original (on Penn's debut album, March) featuring a bluesy piano, a freer vocal, and a driving chorus (horns and all!)

The CD also contains a beautiful new rendition of "Long Way Down" (Look What the Cat Drug In.) This song's lyrics expertly convey the melancholy resignation of staying in a relationship well past its expiration date ("...if I wear apathy's crown, don't call me Highness, it's a long way down") even though "I've got a feeling she's been sleeping with the whole wide world."

If Penn's delivery of that line doesn't touch your heart, you've never been in love (at least not with the wrong person!)

Michael Penn wraps his pessimistic (or realistic, take your pick) and insightful lyrics up in pretty hooks and harmonies, mixing the sweet and the sour, and taking the listener someplace unexpected but ultimately recognizable.

And Palms & Runes, Tarot & Tea is simply a darned good collection of well-written songs that any fan of pop/rock/singer-songwriters should appreciate.

    Album Description

Power Metal ARTIST BIO For a great number of people, the Finnish Heavy Metal veterans Tarot have always been ahead of other metal bands musically, visually, and professionally. The band has been around nearly two decades and has released six studio albums. In Tarot4s case quality goes easily ahead of quantity and SUFFER OUR PLEASURES speaks great volumes of this quality matter and further strengthens their position near the top of the metal heap. As for the songs, well, what can you really expect from these talented musicians who have been listening to their Sabs, Priests, Maidens, Dios, Rainbows, etc. through their whole lifetime? Their music is a giant mirror that reflects the bands they have always been influenced by musically. In fact, listening to Tarot is like listening to some of your favorite NWOBHM bands from the480s.

4 out of 5 stars "The stars are my brothers, they're calling me to shine.".......2006-06-02

And Marco does indeed shine. I knew from Century Child that he could sing with Tarja. After listening to Suffer Our Pleasures I discovered that he could more than handle the vocals on an entire CD by himself. Unlike most singers, Marco can comfortably project more than one style of voice. In fact, while listening to this CD, you might be led to believe that there are different vocalists from one track to the next. All the styles are good but I prefer when he goes for the power, as in the refrain for Rider of the Last Day, which is my personal favorite, and the source of the above title. The instrumentals are darn good also, but I can't award five stars because the quality of the music seems to go south as it proceeds through the tracks. The first six are very good, followed by two that are OK, but the last two do not appeal to me. However, this item is recommended. And if you want to hear something unique, listen to the first track. Marco, in his gruff style, portrays a monster worse than the devil. Considering this, the very ending of the song is the funniest thing, actually the only funny thing, I have ever heard on a power metal recording. (Please see my profile for a brief discussion of my rating philosophy.)

4 out of 5 stars Search The Tarot For Excellent Metal.......2005-03-26

The name Tarot inspires a sense of mystery and power right off the bat when you hear the word. Metal power is most certainly the case from this band with the same name. Their release entitled "Suffer Our Pleasures" will immediately appeal to fans of the band Nightwish for their very own Bassist Marco Hitela performs these duties and sings lead on the tracks. On the guitar is his Brother Zachary and the combination is truly a tasty piece of music. Marco is very impressive on lead vocals, and for those who have seen Nightwish they know he provides a large amount of the backup for Tarja Turunen and does a great job of it as well. It is nice to see him able to sing full numbers for a change. Some of them are damned good.

The band is rounded out by Janne Tolsa on keyboards and Pecu Cinnari on drums. Each player providing the skill I felt best matched the music Marco and Zach had written. Some of the grooves have a little of a Nightwish feel to them, but not as much as you might expect. Marco was in this group before he joined Nightwish so perhaps he brought some of the writing style to them. The sound is definitely in line with a lot of the metal that is coming out of Finland nowadays, and so far so good on that. I have yet to be totally disappointed in the Finns and their quest to dominate modern metal.

My favorites are primarily "I Rule" and "From The Void" since they just kicked when played loud. There is also a semi-epic in "Rider Of The Last Day". This number starts out slow and grinding, yet picks up speed considerably only to slow down to a whisper at the end. It is done very well. "From The Shadows" is perhaps the quickest number on the CD, with its almost Southern Country beginning it was quite fun. One does not expect this feel to come from a band in Finland. Yet music being universal, I guess influences fall into the same track.

Anyone who enjoys Marco's work as a performer with Nightwish should pick this up, to see the other side of what he is also capable of. It is a solid piece throughout and you will find yourself giving many tracks a second and continual listen.

    Album Description

Tarot is not only a card game, but also a long time running heavy metal band from Finland. The band was founded in the early eighties by the Hietala brothers. The first album ''Spell Of Iron'' was finally released in 1986. Much later Marco became famous as a member of Sinergy and of course Nightwish, but he never abandoned his baby band. Tarots have released great albums, which are a lesson in stainless steel, pure heavy metal - but without the clichés. If you never heard of Tarot, this is the chance to become part of the beautiful world of metal the band unleashes. 2007.

This CD is awesome from the begining of the first song. Very heavy with excellent power in the rhythm guitars. The singer is a bit gruff but each song grows on you with each listen.Bass player from Nightwish is the band leader but you won't hear any ear piercing female vocals here. Recommended for fans of mid-paced good power metal.

    5 out of 5 stars Great metal!.......2007-03-15

Tarot is a Finnish metal band that has been around for a long time, and this disc is my first introduction to their music. And I have to say, this is very fine straight-up heavy metal! (Can Finnish metal be anything other than great? hehehee) For me, the highlight of this band is Marco Hietala. As many know, he is the singer for Nightwish on their last couple of albums, and that is how I got to know Tarot. Anyone who loves Marco's vocals on Nightwish should definitely pick this up. IMHO he is one of the best vocalists in heavy metal!

As for the price, yeah 38 dollars is insane!! You could order this from Europe yourself and even with the shipping and currency exchange it wouldn't be that much! So, look for a cheaper copy, and get it.

    4 out of 5 stars great metal.......2007-03-10

Tarot is a wonderful, awesome metal band. Good, sharp metal without being 'screamy' - you can actually understand the singer's lyrics. I really love their version of Veteran of the Psychic Wars. I gave the CD four stars because $34 is a bit overpriced, so definitely check the Amazon marketplace for better deals (or go directly to their website! [...])

      Album Description

For the first time the sacred images of the Tarot come alive as serenely beautiful music. To express the mysteries of the Tarot through music, the Gordons translated the magickal correspondences for each card into musical key, tempo, dynamics and texture and programmed their digital synthesizers accordingly. They then meditated on each group of the cards while allowing the music to manifest through them. The result is deeply tranquil music which is also a powerful musical tool for increasing psychic sensitivity in Tarot readings, and for meditation upon the ancient images of the Tarot.

As a student of the mysteries and practioner of Tarot for over 10 years I cannot speak highly enough of David and Steve Gordon's Music of the Tarot. It is absolutely perfect for meditationl practices with the Major and Minor Arcana as well as for listening to while doing divinations and readings. The Gordon's have obviously done their home work and have really synthesized the ancient wisdom of the symbols of the cards and successfully distilled their essence into this vivid and soul-felt musical journey. This sweeping and lush soundtrack is a virtual voyage that delves deep into the subconscious realms, creating incredible ambient environments perfect for meditation, ceremony and ritual. I have used this CD close to a dozen times for Equinox and Solstice celebrations and find it to be the perfect backdrop ! A real winner !

music of the tarot combines traditional and electronic instrumentation in a smooth, flowing texture that's perfect for meditation and relaxation. it's complex enough for serious listening, yet uniform enough for background music. each listening brings a new journey. i highly recommend it.

First the good news- this is an exellent new age disc(inspired by the Tarot) to open your mind while reading the cards or even just picking a card and meditating on it. The better news- the last track on this disc, "the Wheel of Fortune" is the best track to syncronize reading a spread with. It features a "climax" type ending that, if listened to while reading an "outcome" card, will really blow you away! Thats how I felt and would recommended it to other Tarot readers. 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars The art of listening with an open eye.......2003-09-03

It is not simply, music, but where the music leads you. Now I don't doubt you could sit down with 500 cds and find something that would be the equivalent. The important point, is that if you find it works for you, (opens your inner eye and leads you to the place you need to be in order to be more effective in your tarot readings) then isn't it worth it?

The best I can say, is when I played this for the first time, it was when I was stressed out...it overcame that and moved me to a better place. Almost like never having heard your mother's voice since birth and then hearing it for the first time in years. You recognize it, it calls to you and you respond with an openess.

I teamed it up with a scented eye pillow for relaxation while resting. Then I tried reading several spreads, I was amazed that I was able to go a lot further with the imagery than I have done in the past.

      Worth every cent!

Fear rears it's ugly head and the words Tarot strike black thoughts into the minds of the people. What total rot, by not buying TAROT by KEVIN KENDLE you may well be missing one of the most beautiful albums ever released and it's descriptive quality abounds with sheer majesty, at the end of the album you will have listened to the very energies of each card, within the very carefully crafted compositions.

TAROT as an album is an experience to be recomended to those that have an ability to visualize from within and enjoy the sheer magnificance of this truly lovely cd.

Describing the Major Arcana and depiciting the Journey of the Fool otherwise known as the Seekers Quest, the path toward wholeness for the human soul, KENDLE talkes us on a Mystical journey, through 11 cards of the pack.

What do i know about TAROT? quite simply not a lot, but taking time to read the contents of the album one will find it extremely interesting and revealing and after all what's in a name, you may simply want to listen to the album because of it's powefull and moving music and that is perhaps the best reason of all.

KEVIN KENDLE has at times brough back fond memories of IASO TOMITA in many of the tracks upon this brilliant album. THE FOOL and THE MAGICIAN begin the album with glourious rich and melodic tones, The EMPEROR which incidently is used as the intro to one of my radio programmes, lifts the musicial journey to an almost regal state and my favoutite of all STRENGTH fills the heart full of hope and joy through it's supreme classicial magnificance, very TOMITA and at times almost DVORAK or MUSSORGSKY in it's glory.

I would highly recomend KEVIN KENDLES TAROT to anyone like likes the music to move them, that likes there music to give that tingle down the back of their neck to anyone that would wish to have an album that would touch the emotional pallette leaaving them feeling impowered and inspired.

3 out of 5 stars Nice idea, mediocre performance........2001-06-18

The idea of making music to accompany the tarot cards is interesting, so when I saw this CD at a new-age store I bought it on the spot.

Though the music is enjoyable, it's not much better than "elevators music" - unobjectionable, but not really good.

Many of the tracks are indistinct - for many of the tracks I couldnt tell which of the cards it should accompany without checking on the cover.

So though this CD is a nice addition to meditations on the cards or as background music to card readings, I could do better by selecting tracks from my CDs collection to bring out the essence of each card.

      Album Description

The Rohrig-Tarot, a deck of Tarot cards expecially suited for our modern times, iknspired Gene Newton to create the music of this album. Using synthesizer, he interpreted the essence of these unique cards to enhance the ability of the listener to touch the message of the Tarot. The pace of the music is calm, yet full of expression. This album is especially good for meditation or just listening.
