Not such a great sampling...........2001-01-21
Some of these songs are really stretching for a romantic mood. Especially some of the On the Town songs. It's not that they're not good though....All of this music is from other CDs that have been already been released. Don't limit yourself to just these songs. Go ahead and buy the other recordings. Deutsche Grammophon did the On the Town recording along with West Side Story and Candide. I'd recommend a different recording of West Side Story though. The one of Wonderful Town is the kinda newly released complete version of the musical. It's a good but expensive one. Also, this recording left out some of THE greatest love songs from Peter Pan (Dream of Me, Peter Peter), Trouble in Tahiti (Well of all people, There is A Garden, Finale), 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (Seena, Lud's Wedding), and Quiet Place (There is so much, too much). I think this recording, though okay, is a stumbling block to finding out about the real Bernstein saga of musicals. And if you are still getting this recording, the sound quality is really good. West Side Story is done by the masters of the opera so they sing it that way. Candide is operetic too, but then again it is an operetta. That's about all I have to say on this recording.
nice but operatic.......2000-02-23
This is a nice collection of Bernstein miscellany. Note however that the West Side Story, On the Town, and Candide are the "operatic" versions, with Te Kanawa and Carreras, Von Stade and Hampson, and Jerry Hadley, respectively. Bernstein conducts WSS and Candide and Tilson Thomas OTT. The surprise is the bits from Wonderful Town, which was recorded on JAY, not DG like the others. Featuring Ron Raines and Rebecca Luker, it's probably the most authentically "Broadway" of this set.

Elaine Stritch is a legend and she knows it. And so she came up with a whole one-woman show about the best topic she could think of: her life in the theater. And what a trip it's been. From Ethel Merman to Noel Coward, Stritch has worked with some of the greatest names to grace the American stage, and she has anecdotes about all of them (most are included on this recording). In this show, she hits all the marks with the acuity of a seasoned pro who's seen it all and whose love for the theater remains undiluted. Stritch is not a traditionally pretty singer (those gravelly pipes!), but she absolutely knows how to give life to a song, extracting the last drop of meaning, dropping pauses for effect with deadly accuracy. Sondheim's "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Broadway Baby" will be hers forever, and a case could be made for the hilarious "Zip" (from Pal Joey) and the obscure, spectacularly politically incorrect "Civilization" (from the revue Angel in the Wings) as well. Fittingly, this two-CD set includes "I'm Still Here," which may well be Stritch's motto. If you're looking for a concise yet bewitching history of the musical, this is it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
A National Treasure.......2007-07-05
This double CD is stuffed full of great songs and amazing stories. My favorite stories are of Elaine's date with Marlon Brando, what she thought some lyric are/meant, and her time in Compant. The total honesty that she brings it all together is touching and inspiring.
Very few people have the length or variety of a career that Elaine Stritch has had. I am sure that she has enough stories to do ten more shows.
If you love Broadway then you must buy this CD.
Stritch is superb.......2007-06-27
The only disappointment is that I missed the show live. This is a terrific honest performance by an actor who has a deep well of experience from which to draw. From her early childhood memories, through acting school, her loves, her struggles and more, Ms Stritch weaves a fascinating and completely enthralling story. Ultimately, she lives the songs, rather than just performs and this is what really marks her out.
I am so glad, she's still here!
Entertaining but grating on the ears.......2007-05-11
I've never been able to understand what is so great about Elaine Stritch's singing. It's simple: she can't sing. I've tried and tried to like her, and I do, as an actress, but NOT as a singer. Listening to these CDs, all I hear is a grouchy old lady voice with no vibrato, no range, and no ability to hold notes. If she were to try out for American Idol she would get cringes! I love her humor and honesty, and that's why I bought this, but the voice...ugh.
Great Broadway Review.......2007-04-11
I thoroughly enjoy this collection of stories from her experiences from a teenage girl in Michigan through her career, very funny, some sad and great entertainment.
Elaine Stritch at Liberty.......2007-01-19
Completely entertaining---a bit maudilin in places, but a must have for any Elaine Stritch fan.
Certainly worth the money!

The damage that Weezer has wrought. .......2006-03-03
If sweater-vests could rock out, they'd sound like Ozma. "Spending Time ..." may remind you of Scooter lookalikes furiously banging their heads and giving devil horns.
Ozma got their big break by opening for Weezer. Both share the annoying capacity for blending guitars with cheesy 80's synths. The perfect example is the title track, which could've been used in a promo for "Joanie Loves Chachi."
Another similar trait is irritating, whiny vocals with no range. On "Eponine", and other tracks, there's a definite Queen influence, especially in the bombastic guitars. But the singing is so wimpy and lifeless, it'll make you appreciate how unique Freddie Mercury was.
Ozma are so bland, sorting out socks might seem more exciting. Or sweater-vests.
Pinkerton-esque.......2004-12-03
Let me begin by saying that this review was written after Ozma's 2004 breakup. This was, to say the least, quite a heartbreak. And since there's been plenty of apt time to reflect upon Ozma's debut and sophomore albums [yes, the ones that sound like Weezer], I can now undoubtedly say that "Spending Time On The Borderline" is Ozma at its best. To put it plainly...a masterpiece. Admittedly, when I first picked this album up and popped it into my CD player, I was NOT impressed. Ozma could have broke up at that very moment and my response would have been, "Who cares...they're no good anymore." But as albums do have a tendency to grow on you, I decided to give this one a try. After all, what did I have to lose? Slowly and steadily certain tracks started to pop out at me..."Hey, 'Come Home Andrea' is one catchy song!" And, "Whoa, this Japanese song sure is poppy!" Then there are the deeper songs on the album, like "Eponine", "Bad Dogs", and "Game Over". They take a bit longer to love, but the wait is certainly worth it. To sum it all up, there's not a single track on this album that I wouldn't want to listen to, anywhere, anytime. Despite the mysterious tension that corrupted Brummel and Slegr, I, for one, know that they went out [no pun intended] on a good note with "Spending Time On The Borderline". Another "Pinkerton"? Perhaps. But only time will tell...
*Ryan and José have started up a new band labeled "Yes Dear". Hopefully they can continue their largely unpublicized legacy. Check them out at myspace.com/yesdear
A disappointment.......2004-11-05
I bought this album because I heard that Ozma was similar to Rooney and Weezer (bands I think are good). Ozma sure does have some similarities in this album (though they're probably more comparable to a Christian band like Reliant K), but that doesn't make the album any good. The whole album is very boring. There's just nothing special to it. I recommend that you pass on this.
Great Guitar Pop.......2004-10-16
I think that Ozma is consistently one of the more "interesting" bands to come along. I do hear the Weezer influence, but at the same time it is filtered through a lot of other bands (Queen anyone?) as well as a lot of originality. The two part vocal melodies, instrumentation, tones, etc. are fully realized on this "studio" album. I like the whole Ozma catalog, but the production on this disc kicks all the other ones in the rear. As a guitarist, I have to hand it to Ryen. This is consistently one of the better riff orientated guitar albums that I have heard in a long time. He can also shred like a beast, but all his guitar lines support the song melodically and rhythmically. You can't ask for more from a guitarist. All the guitar is there for a reason. This is playing that I aspire to. It reminds me a lot of Brian May.
As for the songs, "Your Name" is one of the most orginal ballads I have heard in a while. I love "Bad Dogs" even though most don't. The lead on that song is exceptional.
Experimental yet excellent..........2004-02-29
Ozma definitely shows some maturity musically with this album. I did a review of this CD for my school newspaper (over 1500 studnents/staff/parents read the newspaper), so hopefully I can get the word out about Ozma to some people.
1. Spending Time - the band experiments with some guitar textures and spiffy synth lines. May take a few listens to get used to. 7/10
2. Your Name - good vocals, perfect melody. 8.5/10
3. Come Home Andrea - a vaguely Celtic, alt-country tune that even people who hate country will like. One of the best tracks on the album. 9/10
4. Bad Dogs - marching band percussion leads into a hard rockin' song. 8.5/10
5. Utsukushii Shibuya - great bass line, nice flute and strings. 9.5/10
6. Turtleneck - probably the worst track. nice metaphorical lyrics though. 6.5/10
7. Game Over - catchiest track. my personal favorite. - 10/10
8. Curve In The Old 1-9 - elaborate and brilliant, both lyrically and musically. - 9/10
9. Restart - another GREAT track. such a perfect melody. - 9.5/10
10. Eponine - fun to sing along to. very catchy. - 9/10
11. Wake Up - nice vocals from Rachel Haden (Jimmy Eat World, Nada Surf, Weezer). 8.5/10
12. Light Years Will Burn - not my favorite. still pretty good though. 7.5/10
Overall: 8.5/10
Definitely awesome.

Elegant jazz with Celtic flavor and New Age sensibility.......2006-09-30
A winding road through complex improvisations, experimental rhythms and irregular phrasing, "Something of Time" is a sophisticated and interesting fusion album. Primarily mellow and moody in tone, this CD nonetheless falls closer to the jazz or modern classical end of the spectrum than the New Age, and is "Celtic" only by virtue of the fact that some of the instruments and musicians are Irish. The duo of Billy Oskay on violin, and Micheal O Domhnaill on guitars and keyboards weaves a subtle, magic spell with their freeform compositions, often enhanced by the flutes and whistles of Brian Dunning. Keyboardist Triona Ni Dhomhnaill, later to become a regular with the group, appears here in only one song. The meandery, jazzy unpredictability of this music is what makes it fascinating, though at times this quality can also render it a little unapproachable and hard to relax to. If you're looking for simple, boring music to lull you into a meditative state, this definitely isn't it, and likewise don't look here for traditional Celtic favorites. But for a unique and elegantly honest statement of creative imagination, "Something of Time" is a good pick. I especially enjoy the group's use of harpsichord and exploration of its different voicings in #9, the reflective "Apres-Midi." For more gentle, innovative, intelligent fusion music, try the other albums of Nightnoise, as well as those by Orion, Maggie Sansone, and Axiom of Choice. And for another take on integrating the harpsichord into modern music, check out "Fresh Aire IV" by Mannheim Steamroller.
Delicious.......2004-06-14
Maybe the best Nightnoise work along with 'Parting Tide' and 'At the End of the Evening', this is a highly evocative collection of moody and reflective Celtic, instrumental themes full of subtleness, technical quality and high spiritual pretentions, resulting in the sweetest and most magical soft music you've ever heard. The opener 'Timewinds' is a very uplifting tune in the very mood of Mike Oldfield, if leaded by superb fiddle by Billy Oskay, sadly out of the band now. 'Perchance to Dream' is one of the softest and purest melodies you'll ever hear and grey and misty 'Hourglass' recalls the passing of time in a little Irish country village, with a sense of joy and hope at the end. 'Tundra Summer' sounds ominous and transcendental and 'I Still Remember' sounds adventurous and full of feeling.
'Something of Time' is maybe second to 'The Parting Tide' in bringing subtle and extremely beautiful sounds to your ears. Still a very deep work but not as much as 'At the End of The Evening'. Maybe that's its good thing, the balance between deepness and objective quality. It is a piece of art indicated for romantics and smooth instrumental likers.
A Time-less Masterpiece.......2004-01-12
Although every one of the Nightnoise albums feature some unforgettable pieces, this one in particular will haunt you. I don't know how they manage to evoke the emotion and reflective mood, but it is nothing short of magic. They are weaving an etherial tapestry, these muses, and those of us who have been captured in the weaving of it are forever entranced by the lyric cadence of their poetry. They are not only ambassadors of the Celtic people, but from another place in time.
And they do take you there.
This album in its entirety takes you where you cannot go on your own. You seem to feel at the end of it as if you have been their time-travelling companion.
To this end, and for your gift, we are forever in your debt, Nightnoise.
One to keep around always........2000-08-04
This CD illustrates the band as it starts to hit its stride. The sound is progressively flavored and retains a little more of it's "this side of the ocean" feel than later works which exhibit the stronger Irish influence. The band has made great progress with the Irish sound but here the newness of the four artist's early melding delivers that "ear-catching" quality that I miss in the later discs. Of the lot, this is the one to get.

Ethel Deserved Better Than This.......2001-06-22
There may indeed be no business like show business. RCA was a major backer of this musical, and fully expected to record the original cast album. Decca, Merman's recording label, wouldn't allow her to appear. The solution the two compnaies decided on was an original cast album on RCA featuring Dinah Shore doing Merman's numbers, and this mediocre studio album.
Decca was never a winner when it came to modern recording techniques. Merman's voice has no echo or reverb to enhance her performance. The arrangements are by Gordon Jenkins, which fit Ethel's style like it was a dress bought in a bargain basement. It is a shame that in the later years of her life, Ethel didn't choose to revisit this score and re-record it, as she did with Annie Get Your Gun twice.
The selections from Panama Hattie are a nice rarity, but they are taken from scratchy shellac originals. There are several compilations that include these numbers with no annoying extraneous noise.

Interesting.......2007-05-07
I am a fan of Nine Inch Nails and thought that hearing a different take on the music of the band would be interesting. I am very happy with the CD.
