Leading mother figure and genuinely evolutionary composer and performer of New Age music, Constance Demby makes a piece of shimmering beauty on her 1982 offering, Sacred Space Music. The recording's first half, "The Longing," is a magical blend of hammered dulcimer, piano, and viola, a piece that speaks for the hungry human spirit. In answer, the second half, "Radiance," brings together the pleasing sounds of hammered dulcimer, string synthesizer, tinkling bells, and heavenly choral vocals. Elegant, exotic, and edifying, Demby's inspired music is sonic light by which to see. --Paige La Grone

Very calming and relaxing drumming.......2007-05-08
This is a very nice CD when I put it in to play my whole house relaxed and clamed down and just listened very nice. The drumming is fantatsic, but if you do not like native american flutes not a CD for you in some parts of the CD the flutes are very loud. But I really enjoy this CD.
Drum Medicine.......2007-01-12
I really enjoy both CD's Sacred Spirit Drums and Drum Medicine. I live in an area of very little resource for this type of purchase- I was very happy to find what I wanted online- also very glad to be able to listen before I purchased- would not have bought them without that. Service was the best- shipping was also very good.. I will consider this type of purchase again when needed.
Awesome Drum CD.......2006-07-13
This CD is awesome I have it in my car now and that is all I play.
Drum Medicine rocks........2006-03-11
This is the best cd for playing along with drums or dancing up a storm.
Incredible - can this be the work of two white men?????.......2005-09-01
You have to listen to this CD to believe it. I hear the Native American flute, drums .... it's one incredible CD. I bought it to learn to drum but enjoy listening to it just for relaxation, trance states, etc. This is superb!

Amazon.com's Best of 1998
Although this collection intends to transport the soul, it has a tremendously potent low-end depth to it that earns high marks indeed in the worlds of vocal and liturgical music. Dmitri Bortniansky's "Hymn of the Cherubim" is performed with a gracefulness that gets a warming fatness from the production, as does Alexander Gretchaninov's "I Have Chosen the Blissful," which travels with a ringing resonance. In a year of fine choral works--check out Sequentia's Hildegard cycle box, 900 Years or Arvo Pärt's Kanon Pokajanen for a "something old, something new" mix--this collection is highly valued for its sonic integrity and its excellent anthological mix. --Andrew Bartlett
Amazon.com
Words cannot describe poignantly enough the exquisite, angelic voices that permeate the heart and exalt the soul on Sacred Treasures. The most highly regarded Russian and Bulgarian choirs sing the hymns of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Lvovski, and other composers in the Russian Orthodox Church's tradition of "Divine Worship" (worship through chant). From the first tolling bells that open the CD with a willowy, floating piece from Rachmaninov's Liturgy of St. John, to the final bells closing the door on "Hymn of the Cherubim" (Grigory Lvovski), this CD creates a gentle, distinctly Byzantine glory. The rhythms slowly wisp along while the choirs' baritones, tenors, and sopranos mesh into one expansive blessing. Meant to comprehensively gather not all Russian liturgical pieces but rather hymns that emote an inner tranquility and celestial grace, Sacred Treasures plays like a piece of heaven on Earth. --Karen Karleski

Inner beauty.......2007-02-07
The sense of beauty emerge within us as these chorals fill the space of our head and heart. A music written by real masters and interpreted by voices rarely heard. Beautiful.
Music for the soul.......2007-01-10
One of the best renditions of the Orthodox Liturgy most famous hymns.
Hauntingly beautiful.......2006-12-28
A terrific production...a wonderful selection; great phrasing. See also "Holy Love" by 'Rossica Choir'
Divine Beauty and Peace! .......2006-12-03
I am the producer of this CD and also of "SACRED TREASURES III: Choral Masterworks From Russia and Beyond" as well as "SACRED TREASURES IV: Quiet Prayers" and "CELTIC TWILIGHT 7: Sacred Spirit". In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and peaceful sacred music. Most of the pieces on this compilation (as on the other compilations mentioned above) are filled with lush harmonies sung by large mixed choirs. All the selections are deeply nourishing to the soul.
In many cases, I chose to use excerpts from longer pieces, omitting the exultant huge crescendos and very fast sections that are typical of Russian sacred music, presenting only the slow and quiet verses. One reviewer complained about the omission of the final (loud and fast) part of the Cherubic hymns, saying this is the best part, but I completely disagree! I feel that the slow "adagio" sections are by far the most beautiful parts, and that is what you will hear on these CDs.
Different types of music serve different needs, and in today's stressful and fast-paced world, one of the most important and often neglected needs is for time out from that world--to "lay aside all earthly cares" (as the "Cherubic Hymns" on this CD prescribe) and to rest in a magical, quiet space of slow, peaceful, beauty. That peaceful beauty is available to you on all of these albums, including this one, "SACRED TREASURES: Choral Masterworks from Russia"!
A Soviet version of Russian music.......2006-05-29
I admit to some strong bias here, having sung on the recording of Tchaikovsky's Liturgy available here from the Russian Chamber Chorus of New York. I was in that choir for five years, and our conductor's view of how to properly interpret Russian music became my own.
Because of Stalin's efforts to cleanse the country of the influence of religion, many musicians and composers were sent to Siberia. They were replaced with those from peasant backgrounds. The result was a huge change in how classical Russian music was performed, becoming less subtle, more interested in brute power and flash.
This recording features a massive and powerful choir. But the listener mostly hears a series of vowel sounds, with the consonants lost in the shuffle. Dynamic range is not as large as it could be. Phrasing is largely absent and we hear a steady wall of sound instead. Precision of rhythm is spotty, what consonants we do hear are frequently smeared. Pitch and richness of tone are good, but on high notes, inevitably given the size of the choir, some members strain.
Having performed and recorded Tchaikovsky's Liturgy I am very familiar with the piece. But listening to this recording of excerpts from it I sometimes barely recognized it as the same work. Tchaikovsky gives us great artistry, frequently crecendos and decrecendos on a single phrase. Each choral voice comes and goes like a wave, not all together like a tsunami in all but a few places. The balance of voices is constantly moving.
I encourage you to listen to the samples available here of the Russian Chamber Chorus's recording of Tchaikovsky's Liturgy, compare the same pieces. This recording is more a Vegas neon version of this great artwork than the fine art it deserves to be shown as. James Oestreich, the New York Times critic, put the Russian Chamber Chorus recording at #4 on his top ten list of classical releases for 2001, and said that if you had not heard it "You only think you know Tchaikovsky."
I hope you give the real Russian classical tradition a listen. It deserves your time, and it will pay you back with a huge amount of pleasure.

After dark descents into the abyss on The Magnificent Void and Midnight Moon, Steve Roach lightens up the textures a bit on the double CD Mystic Chords & Sacred Spaces. The mood harkens back to his influential 1984 release, Structures From Silence, but the atmospheres are more textured and layered while melody is virtually non-existent. And while Structures had a slow motion pulse, Mystic Chords hangs rhythm free. It floats in a space of richly detailed, but minutely shifting sound constructs that owe more to Gyorgy Ligeti and Mark Rothko than early Roach touchstones like Klaus Schulze and Salvador Dali. Roach is creating a free fall through space, less rooted in the pulsing techno-tribal sound of his 1990s music, and more ecstatic in its evocations of something beyond. He carries you to groaning turgid depths, then lifts you as electric guitar glides and synthesizers gurgle, shudder, and swell in an Aurora Borealis of sound. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-08-04
While I recognize the artistry that created Steve Roach's, "Magnificent Void," I was completely underhwelmed by this set of several hours of his drone music. If you don't know by now, the drone sound is created by holding down several adjacent keys on a synthesizer and twiddling with the controls. This can add an interesting effect but unless this varies enough to maintain interest, it can also be tedious - like listening to white noise for hours on end. The drone sound is to Roach what the repetitive arpeggio is to Philip Glass. Both composers are capable of fascinating music. But both composers can also be slackers and substitute their signature sound/trick for intelligent and new music. If you like drones, this will be up your alley. rather than finding a fascinating soundscape to escape to and meditate in, I found this very boring.
Amazing sounds!.......2007-05-26
I bought this CD to use for a shamanic journey that I was hoping to go on. The two CDs are very soothing and very suitable for meditations or for just relaxing. The sounds are amazing.
A harkening back to Quiet Music.......2006-03-19
Steve Roach has so many roots that to say he is harkening back to any one of them requires additional explanation. In this case he is reaching deeply into his more meditative sounds, akin to but by no means a repeat of "Structures from Silence" and "Quiet Music."
The first time I played this double album I had some guests over discussing a novel one of them had written. Just hearing it once lead to another sale to someone who was completely unfamiliar with Steve's music. Very melodious beautiful sounds.
Diamond of Eternity.......2005-10-12
So, that's much more than music. This album is a treasure!!!
I could rate it even with infinity of stars if I could!!!
It is STAR itself.
Synths and pads, which come under your skin and you feel part of this sensation. When I listen to it - I close my eyes and find myself drifting through the Universe. It is exactly what I always wish to hear when I think of Time and Space, about eternity. Real MASTERPIECE!!! So, this album is destinied to have it in collection for those, who wants to go loose in order to forget anything uncomfortable and boring.
Happy flight to the STARS!!!
Oleg
A masterpiece........2005-06-12
This is easily one of Steve Roach's finest hours - well, 5 hours to be more precise, if you get the complete set (it is available in either a 2-CD or 4-CD version). Disc 1 of 4, Mystic Chords, is what I would call the "classic" organic ambient style of Steve Roach; Labyrinth is his dark ambient style; Recent Future is a tasty variety sampler platter; and Piece of Infinity is one of Steve's trademark minimal long-form works, perhaps the subtlest and softest he has ever done. My favorite is the first disc, 5 tracks running from nearly 12 to just over 20 minutes each. There are great highs and lows, wonderful deep drones and high shimmering tones, all richly layered in an organic primordial soup that touches a vibrant nerve for a thoroughly soothing listening experience. Reaching deeper still is Labyrinth, 10 tracks that plunge deep into "The Otherworld," a track which is representative of the intense darkness found at several moments on disc two. Though undeniably Roach, I'm also reminded here of old haunting Schulze numbers from the early 1970s. Disc 3, Recent Future, is still a little dark, but not as much as Labyrinth. Not a beat is heard, but the variety on these 13 tracks while retaining a cohesive quality is remarkable. Light, dark, simple, complex, visceral, elegant - all are apt adjectives to describe the music. Sample to your heart's delight, or better yet, play it through from beginning to end and hear the flow as Steve intended. Consider it time very well spent.

What could be more sublime than a wall of dark, rotund Russian voices shimmering against the rising, ornate walls of a great cathedral? Not much, and this compilation of absolutely magnificent music proves it. The label Hearts of Space returns on this third choral collection to the ominous Slavic chant of their first choral album, Sacred Treasures I, which gathered together recordings of stunning Bulgarian and Russian choirs portraying the sacred works of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, and other composers. Whereas Treasures I pulled from varied sections of sacred liturgies, including solo passages, Treasures III most often stays in harmonic chant with select voices occasionally rising and rolling in polyphonic heavenly calls. The collective voice draws the emotive tension taut here, as on Rimsky-Korsakov's "Our Father," which uses the absence of darkness to later juxtapose bold, rising drama. The Kiev chant "Blessed Art Thou O Lord" sends chills down the spine as the whispering consonants of the Russian language skip across the ancient repetition like sand skitters over a stormy beach. This is a collection as breathtakingly beautiful as the Cathedral of the Dormition itself. Not to be missed. --Karen K. Hugg

Absolutely FANTASTIC CD !!.......2007-06-28
I'll keep this short: I'm not new to chant or choral music but there are SO MANY options out here that it's hard to know which ones are worth buying. I've got a few titles in my budding collection but I have to say that this particular recording is FANTASTIC. It is at once awe inspiring, meditative, and peaceful. Simply wonderful...
Sacred and a treasure!.......2007-06-11
Wow! This is as good as the first Sacred Treasures if not better. These holy and divine works are truly "the speech of angels".
Absolutely wonderful.......2006-12-28
I've really become taken with Russian choral music as of late. I've tried to get my hands on every recording I can, and amongst them all this is one of the very best. The phrasing, tonality and selection is terrific.
More Divine Beauty and Peace!.......2006-12-03
I am the producer of this CD and also of the first CD in the Sacred Treasures series called "SACRED TREASURES: Choral Masterworks From Russia" as well as of "SACRED TREASURES IV: Quiet Prayers" and "CELTIC TWILIGHT 7: Sacred Spirit". In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and peaceful sacred music. That peaceful beauty is available to you on all of these compilations, including this one, "SACRED TREASURES III"...
It Doesn't Get any Better!!!.......2006-10-09
Having collected a decent library of sacred music over the years I can readily attest that this is the best sacred music CD that I own, my second favorite being a requiem chant by the monks of Solesmes. Further, upon listening to this CD everyone I know seems to respond to it with the same enthusiasm. Track 10 is my personal favorite, but there are no weak pieces here. The entire production hangs together well. Can't recommend it enough to novice or seasoned liturgical music listener.

Album Description
Celtic Twilight 7: Sacred Spirit weaves a Celtic knot of sacred music from antiquity to the present. The central feature of the Celtic worldview is the intimate relationship of humans with the natural world--"a holy intimacy between the human and the divine in nature"--and "a sense of spirit presences in nature" as Thomas Berry says. This feeling is expressed in many of the pieces on this album. A very similar worldview infuses the music of the brilliant 12th century German visionary Hildegard von Bingen. Like the Celts, Hildegard believed that the natural world is a Divine creation, filled with Divine beauty and Divine energy, and this is the theme of her songs. Some of the best Celtic artists have recognized their kinship with her and have made her music their own. This album features several songs by Hildegard in unique arrangements that are so radiantly Celtic in spirit, they almost transport the listener to the holy wells of Ireland. Also featured are top-notch Irish choir Anúna, great Celtic artists Ãine Minogue and Cathie Ryan, brilliant English cellist Matthew Barley, virtuoso fiddler Mark O'Connor and his Appalachia Waltz Trio, the perfectly-tuned English choir The Cambridge Singers, and the wonderful Medieval/Eastern fusion ensemble Stellamara.

"THIS IS A WINNER"...Heavenly and Mystical...........2007-03-15
ALL MUSIC GUIDE reviewer Thom Jurek, tells why you will love this CD. He says:
"These original songs and interpretations are rendered in forms of sonic poetry that appeal to that which is sacred inside the individual as opposed to underscoring a particular tradition....This is a winner. Forget tags like "new age" and "Celtic," and simply breathe it all in. It washes one's head -- and perhaps even heart -- clean for a time, and opens the world up for a little while".
I am the producer of both this compilation and the "SACRED TREASURES" series. In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and peaceful sacred music. All of the pieces on this compilation are filled with lush harmonies, whether sung by mixed choirs or by soloists, and all are deeply nourishing to the soul.

Demby Enters a Black Hole.......2004-11-30
I am a Constance Demby fan. However, this CD was disappointing. The harpsicord sound throughout overshadowed the other sounds of the songs. The harpsicord became repetitive and irritating at the same time. I would recommend Novas Magnificant and Aetna.
another man's rhubarb.......2004-09-01
This CD will gently float you away like an exquisite lullaby, and perhaps cause the mind to
STOP!
This can be scary, but your sincere longing will be rewarded with radiance.
Enjoy!
Johns' nightmare.......2004-07-02
I rarely do this, but because a reviewer has totally misunderstood the structure and harmony of the music, I am taking the time to make a correction here. John Cordero has stated that the music "falls into two vastly different worlds," stating that."Attunement, Spirit Trance, and Space Music are atonal." This is incorrect, and I recommend that John do more research to discover what is meant by "atonal," as these albums are similar in tonal construction and harmony to the rest of the albums. When John mentions that they are "reminiscent of a waking nightmare," he may not realize that this music has a way of bringing one's issues to the surface, i.e. - his own personal nightmare issues have been revealed to himself through the music, for this music operates as a mirror. Hopefully, this information will assist both John and others to understand that what appears to be one persons nightmare, can be another's bliss.
Sincerely,
Constance Demby
Two worlds of music.......2004-06-26
First I would like to say that I greatly admire Constance Demby's talent. However, if you are interested in buying her CDs, be aware that her music falls into two vastly different worlds. Novus Magnificat, Set Free, Aeterna, and Sanctum Sanctuorum are rich in harmony and very uplifting. Attunement, Spirit Trance, and Sacred Space Music are atonal and reminiscent of a waking nightmare. Unfortunately Amazon.com does not make much of her music available for listening so it is difficult for someone new to her music to be aware that the mood of her work varies greatly. I would love to have her compose more music along the lines of Set Free and Novus Magnificat.
Metaphysics Aside.......2003-10-18
In going through my Constance Demby albums I find that this one 'Sacred Space Music' is the one I play the most often. It is neither the most tuneful nor the most dissonant, but provides an interesting interplay between acoustic and electronic instruments. It presents many of the architectural elements that go into what Demby refers to as 'space' music without being overbearing, making it a perfect introduction to the genre.
The primary sound element in both tracks are strings, with the piano supplying the melodic counterpoint on 'The Longing,' and the hammered dulcimer adding a minimalist element in 'Radiance.' Other voices (including voices) are added as needed to carry out the tonal variation scheme that marks these works. The music is subtle and drawn out, making it perfect for either listening or just plain relaxing.
One of my personal issues with this form of music is its insistence on the trappings of spirituality as part of its validation. I've always felt that composers like Demby stand very well on their own without the need for metaphysical titles and grand New Age gestures. Not that I mind New Age, but too often it winds up as a term used to brush by recognizing this kind of work as legitimate music.
This isn't an easy album to track down, but it's one that is worth the purchase if you do find it. Demby has strong musical skills that deserve a wider recognition.

Sacred Treasures IV.......2007-02-23
This CD was disappointing. Number I in this series is my favorite. I wouldn't have bought this one if I could have sampled the selections before purchase.
Divine Beauty And Peace!.......2006-12-07
I am the producer of this CD and of "SACRED TREASURES:Choral Masterworks From Russia" as well as of "SACRED TREASURES III:Choral Masterworks From Russia and Beyond" and "CELTIC TWILIGHT 7: Sacred Spirit". In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and peaceful sacred music. The previous SACRED TREASURES compilations focus mainly on choral music from the Russian Orthodox tradition, while this compilation consists mainly of 20th century masterpieces from the Western tradition. However, it also includes two Orthodox pieces and one exquisite Renaissance piece. All the selections are deeply nourishing to the soul.
Different types of music serve different needs, and in today's stressful and fast-paced world, one of the most important and often neglected needs is for time out from that world--to "lay aside all earthly cares" (as the "Cherubic Hymn" on this CD prescribes) and to rest in a magical space of slow, peaceful, beauty. That peaceful beauty is available to you on all of these compilations, including this album, "SACRED TREASURES IV: Quiet Prayers"...
Music for Personal Relection and Prayer.......2006-05-14
Sacred Treasures IV is a beautiful tapestry of tonal prayers and a wonderful tool for quiet reflection. Each piece has been carefully selected for its text, musical texture, instrumentation and performance. The collection has much variety in these respects, incorporating a distinctly different setting of Our Father in a folk setting for women's voices, a secular setting from Morten Lauridsen's Poem Cycle: Le Chanson des Roses, as well as two instrumental pieces by Arvo Part. Still, a continuity of atmosphere and purpose gives the listener a sense of inner peace.
O Weisheit from Arvo Part's Seven Magnificat Antiphons, Jesu, Dulcis Memoria by Tomas Luis de Victoria, In Paradisum from Maurice Durufle's Requiem, O Nata Lux from Morten Lauridsen's Lux Aeterna and Arvo Part's Spiegel im Spiegel are all highlights of the CD. These tracks, many of which are extracted from a larger work, combine to quiet the spirit and nurture the soul.
As with the others in the series, this CD is beautifully engineered and packaged to create another musical treasure for discerning listeners.
Stunning Musical Expressions of Piety.......2006-04-06
This CD is another fine offering in the "Sacred Treasures" series. Unlike many other compilations, the represented ensembles are some of the best in the world and each piece has been chosen with deliberation and care. This particular volume highlights the continuity of the sacred music tradition, reaching back to high craft of Renaissance Polyphony (Tom?s Luis de Victoria) to today's more contemporary composers such as P?rt and Lauridsen. From pieces as seemingly disparate as Kedrov's Russian Orthodox "Otche Nash" and Lauridsen's "Contre qui, Rose" the listener obtains the same sense of a very personal piety.
Although the CD implies choral masterworks, there are also two stunning instrumental offerings ("prayers without words") and not all of these "quiet prayers" are even sacred, as with the Lauridsen "Contre qui, Rose." Most of the pieces rely on subtlety of harmonic texture, as with the P?rt "O Weisheit" which rests upon a simple harmonic idea that travels through the ebb and flow of faithful prayer. Lauridsen's "Contre qui, Rose," features a beautiful Rilke text that is sacred in its own way and the composer carries his listeners through rich swells of choral texture, lifting them through waves of gentle dissonances, and setting them gently on the shores of cadence and consonance.
The Faur? "Benedictus" from the Messe Basse is a real treasure not only in that it is less-known than the famous Requiem, but this particular performance by the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter most aptly conveys the beauty and simplicity of Faur?'s sacred music.
The compilation features "classics" such as the "In Paradisum" from both the Durufl? and Faur? Requiems, as well as less common performances such as the "Otche Nash" performed by the distinctive Bulgarian women's choir, KITKA. Lauridsen's "O Nata Lux" and "O Magnum Mysterium" both communicate the sense of illuminating hope that is carried through each of the pieces on the CD.
The "quiet prayers" offered on this album are some of the richest and most beautiful representations of the sacred in music. It is refreshing to see such high quality ensembles and performers represented on a compilation CD, as well as such a varied sampling of repertoire. Far from being mere ear-candy, the pieces on the CD testify to music's ability to be the ultimate expression of faith.

Sleepyeyed Mangrvove Throatwobbler.......2006-12-11
Travelog compilation of listless new age synthorgan tracks sprinkled with indian chief warbling and birdie songs. The intent being to covey the ancient power of various sacred sites into your bedroom. The CD liner promices "eternal thread of spirit that weaves through mankind". The only spirit these dragging disconnected compositions evoke is the common spirit of sleep into your bedroom.... Oh don't forget the cricket chirps.
Not near as good as his others.......2006-05-09
One of the reviews inspired me to buy this cd and I only own two of his cds :"Lyra" and "Sorcerer" which are way better than this cd. One of the songs on this cd "Return" is done live but it is already on the Lyra cd and this is a ten minute song song kind of a waste if you already have the Lyra cd. Purchase the other two cds I mentioned before you buy this one. I don't think there is much to this cd as in different sounds and I keep expecting something great compared to this other cds but it doesn't happen.
Better than my other Stearns' stuff..........2001-08-03
I'm very pleased with this CD. I have a number of Stearns' other projects (Thematic, Textural and Lost World) and this is by far the best. The organ selections are deeply moving and all of the cuts (except #3) touch my soul. #3 has some tribal chanting which doesn't particularly appeal to me but the instrumentals (natural and electronic) on all of the other pieces are very well done and consistent with the "sacred" theme running throughout.
I would describe this album as a "lite" dark ambient with a touch of deep space.
So So Stearns, Better than Average Ambient.......2000-07-21
Funny thing about Michael, his ealier works were so trippy but he began to cheeseout with some hokey ethno-influence. Thats happens when one loses their edge.
Its cheesy. I figure this appeals to New Agey people, but not as much to those who bug out to ultra ambient ambience.
The production is excellent...and its still a very good album.
I think 'Planetary Unfolding' was his ultimate 'trip'. Try that one on heavy drugs, if you can find it (the album) ...and of course some quality mind altering HEAVY DRUGS.
A ***** CD!.......2000-06-17
Michael Stearns explores global ethnic and tribal music on a subliminal electronic scale. This CD covers some of his best recordings - light years ahead of his peers. Superb!

As with its predecessor, Sacred Treasures II lifts the spirits, warms the soul, and soothes the mind. With reverence, world music composer-conductor Vladimir Ivanoff invigorates the classic Holy Week psalm "Miserere," composed in the 17th century by Roman master composer Gregorio Allegori. Ivanoff extends Allegori's venerable nine-piece offering of contrition with five original tracks. In this manner, Ivanoff not only brings this astounding work to a new audience, but also builds on what has historically been the improvisational nature of the work, with Allegori's masterpiece originally modeled on that of Costanzo Festus. Recorded in a German cathedral, Ivanoff's "Metamorphoses" stars a stunning brass section, which provides near perfect balance to the extraordinary Gregorian styled harmonizing of the Onasbrück Boys Chorus. Sacred Treasures II is a magnificent feat: at once haunting, heartbreaking, and heavenly. --Paige La Grone
Customer Reviews:
Why the instruments?.......2006-12-28
I really enjoyed many of the pieces, but the saxophone/trumpet/etc. ruined it for me.
Beautiful CD.......2006-09-29
I cannot say whether or not this rendition is true to Allegri or not. I can say that the music is beautiful, relaxing, heart-felt, contemplative. I highly recommend it.
Big Disappointment.......2006-05-26
I was very disappointed with this selection. I mean, who in the right mind would use a TRUMPET SOLO for a choral CD? And the soprano solo sounded like she was in some kind of physical pain. I just couldn't believe my ears. I kept listening, hoping that maybe, just maybe, the next one would be better, but no such luck. The entire disc was a disappointment.
If you are looking for a nice choral CD with pretty sopranos, I recommend the Sacred Treasures Volume 4, which I got in a hurry to help me recover from the horrors of Volume 2. I found the other volumes (the Russian chorals) to be too baritone for me.
Sounds of Heaven.......2005-12-23
This is the most beautiful CD created. It's as if a window of heaven were put on a CD. The singers sound like angels, and the instruments sound unworldly. This is a must-have for anyone's Christmas CD collection. Highly recommended!
Its different~but beautifull in its difference!.......2003-07-16
First of-its not the miserere that we're all used to. It is the whole piece but its been divided into 14 tracks. As with the Miserere: first there is singing by the men then "answered by the boy trebles". ( which by the way do a wonderful job. The high c is hit with a pure voice. The rest do a great job whith the ins and out of the harmony.)I am not a music scholar, but after the lines are sung and the brass tones of the cornetto come in~ it is a truly haunting ethereal beautiful experience. You can imagine the Pope kneeling in the solemn candlelit atmosphere of the Sistine chapel, although it is recorded in the Osnabruck Cathedral. There are so may recorded pieces of the Miserere, I myself have at least a dozen. To hear it played this way is not a problem. If you want the Miserere the way it was written by Allegri, buy it from Choir of St John's. Or if you want it in english, get it from the King's Cathedral choir. They are both gorgious! But for a different perspective don't be afraid to try something new. It is absolutely awesome!
