Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

This is very good collection of music that brings to life a wide variety of music that is both old and contemporary. The selections vary from composers, historical and famous such as Pavarotti and Puccini to today's James Horner (Titanic, A Beauituful Mind) and John Williams (Star Wars, Sabrina, Jaws, Saving Private Ryan).

If you enjoy the sounds of Sarah Brightman, Charlotte Church, Enya, Kate Bush, Andrea Bocelli, and various theatre music (Andrew Lloyd Webber (Evita, Cats), then you will find this collection worthy of your appreciation.

I have often wondered why classical music radio channels do not play modern composers (i.e., Horner, Willams), and am glad that this album gives them credit that they deserve. There is so many good compositions being created every day that only appear to have a voice on the big screen, which is unfortunate.

Track 11, composed by The Doors, and is a nice version, indeed. I also enjoy the Bond players giving a new twist to some old favourites.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing! Two CDs packed with the world's most beautiful classical music..........2005-11-08

First, let me begin by saying that I am by no means an expert in classical music, but have grown to appreciate it immensely in the past year. I can say wholeheartedly that this is the most beautiful compilation of music I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. It's simple irresistible. There are few words to describe how emotional it is to hear Pavarotti sing "II Canto", or Placido Domingo belt out "Questa o quella". You just get numb with joy!! I have NO idea what they are saying but a translation not necessary. The entire collection (TWo jammed-packed CDs) is phenomenal (excluding the selections from "Bond" which I found to be particularly annoying and not at all "classical" in the true sense of the word). There is something here for everyone, regardless of your personal musical tastes or tolerances.

A guaranteed hit -- Don't miss this one.

    I'm not sure if jazz gets any more "inside/outside" than what David S. Ware does on Flight of I. Critics (or others) sometimes refer to "inside/outside" jazz, which typically means jazz that is both inside "the tradition" and outside, or avant-garde. Of course in some ways this makes little sense, especially when you consider that avant-garde (or atonal or free) jazz has been played for maybe 50 years, which is roughly half as long as jazz music has formally existed. So then what exactly is "the tradition"? In a word, standards. And here, the David S. Ware juxtaposes three reworked standards with three original compositions.

    The primary model here is the Coltrane quartet on more than just a superficial level. This is especially true in the interaction between Matthew Shipp's edgy block chords and David S. Ware's fiery tenor. It's as if the classic Coltrane quartet was playing all on one album - or even all on one song - with as much stylistic variation as exists from the Atlantic recordings up to Meditations (or later). The melodies are just so damn pretty (in a brooding way reminiscent of Coltrane's Sound, the album) and the more dissonant stuff is played with as much fire as Pharaoh Sanders at his best.

    Overall, it's hard to imagine anyone doing this kind of music better (other than perhaps the classic Coltrane quartet themselves). But still I don't see this music as sounding derivative in a bad way. For one thing, as I alluded to before, the evocative melodies are combined with the dissonance in a way that frequently seems just more extreme than anything Coltrane did. Often Matthew Shipp will play something intensely romantic while David S. Ware plays over him with as much fire as Charles Gayle or anyone else I can think of. This music just goes in so many unique directions that I don't have the language to describe it, and there's likewise so much passion here in all these musicians - and especially in Ware himself - that this ultimately comes together as an intensely personal statement that I have come back to many times. I would vehemently recommend Flight of I to just about anyone interested in this kind of music.

      It is my 3rd purchase. First was an LP in mid 80s. Then purchased the CD in late 90s, and decided to buy it again because I lost it.

      Frankly, it is not a pop album. You need a little bit more of average musical background, or more than enough listenings of variety music to appreciate and recognize this album.

      Players' technique and its digestion in relation to 9 different pieces are just amazing. Truely a masterpiece of combining both Jazz and Classical! Personally, this has been the best album of the kind I ever heard. Claud Bolling & Jean-Pierre Rampal combination requires far more elements to meet this high standard of this album. (sorry their music is also beautiful)

      You will not regret this album although it was recorded in early 80s. That is what "Classical" is all about!
