So clear, so fresh........2007-04-11

I originally bought this as a vinyl when it was first released in Australia. The music has stayed with me since then. As the disc and cassette tape I made from it (so that I could play it in the car) have long since worn out, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was out on cd. In the weeks I have had it, it has been played many, many times. With music so fresh and a recording so clear, the disc puts me in a good mood each time I play it. I wonder if anyone has choreographed any dances to this music... It certainly makes my brain dance!

A great piano sampler album.......2005-10-25

This is one of the top Windham Hill Sampler albums. There are not as many songs on it as one of my other favourite piano albums ("Romance" by Narada) but the songs here make up for that in their quality. These songs are not as ethereal as "Romance" and lend themselves to deep thinking as well as strong listening. The techinque in the first song "In Flight" with the echoing piano keys show the eclectic nature of this CD and it is, along with its Guitar Sampler sister CD, a great example of instrumental music.

Windham Hill Records Piano Sampler.......2004-12-09

I purchased this CD with some money my mom gave me when I was a kid ,in the late 1980s. This CD is one of my all time favorites.

I highly recommend this CD, it is really has very beautiful compositions.

I had a math teacher who brought a record from Windham Hill Records to our class, after I had purchased the CD. I was wrather surprised, since Windham Hill Records is not a widely known and popular record label.

The Record Label produces some very interesting music, after listening to my teacher's Windham Hill record, I still think that this piano sampler has some of my favorite songs on this CD.

Simply Beautiful.......2004-03-20

I first heard this CD in 1989. I still listen to it in 2004. My wife and I curl up on the floor every once in a while, turn off all the lights and just listen to this CD from beginning to end. Moody, beautiful, elegant...everything it should be. I love classic rock and heavy metal mostly. This is not like my usual thing, but I love it nontheless.

Beautiful, moving.......2003-12-25

First off, two things. One, this was issued in 1986, not 1974 (maybe corrected since), so it's not some experimental prog rock something or other. Two, the song samples above aren't even close (also maybe corrected). In reality, it's a collection of some early, exquisite Windham Hill gems, just when that label began to hit its stride, that gave new age the credibility it needed. In fact, I call it contemporary instrumental, since I think that term reflects this type of music, more real and emotional. Just perfect. The yearly WH samplers throughout the 80's are also very highly recommended - every one a treat. For someone who is not very "new-agey" and likes a very wide selection of music from alternative rock to jazz to bluegrass, etc., this cd remains one of my favorites.

Philips' 100-volume Great Pianists of the 20th Century series is one of the most ambitious projects ever put together by a record company. For all the debate that will surely ensue over who was chosen and who was passed over, it's obvious that careful, loving attention has gone into the selection of content for the happy 72 to be admitted to this special pantheon (certain especially significant pianists are allotted two or even three volumes, such as Vladimir Horowitz). Each of the handsomely designed, sepia-tinted volumes--adorned with a black and white photo--contains two CDs and a thoughtful essay on the artist in question. Prospective buyers should be aware that this sampler volume offers only short vignettes (averaging between two and three minutes), along with a thumbnail sketch, for each pianist. Still, it's a smorgasbord of morsels that allow you to taste some of the major trends in philosophy and approach to the instrument throughout the century (and reaching well back into the 19th), and the overlap of repertory permits some fascinating quick comparisons as style and technique have evolved. Delve into some of the artists in the series--say Alfred Brendel or Martha Argerich--and trace in greater depth the piano's identity crisis. Is it, for example, a resonantly string-like instrument ideal for pastel shadings or a steely, percussive machine meant to express the hardness of the 20th century? There are countless discoveries to be made here, both for the connoisseur and for anyone taking the first step into getting acquainted with great keyboard artistry. --Thomas May

This is an introductory 2-CD set to introduce a very grand series of CD's featuring the 20th Century's greatest pianists.
As a sampler, there are some incredible jewels here, for example Nikita Magaloff's sparkling Chopin Tarantelle and Paganini Etude No.3: 'La Campanella' played excitingly by John Ogdon. There is even an early recording of Paderewski playing (predictably) Paderewski.

This sampler seems a bit of a Euro-centric, but the editors wisely chose to include Earl Wild doing Gershwin and Roslyn Tureck doing Bach. I ended up purchasing the Andre Watts volume from this series, and wondered what it would be like to own the whole shootin' match. I saw the entire CD series on display in a top notch music store in Germany--it was overwhelming to see the line of brown covers stretching impressively across an entire wall. The sampler is a good way to have a taste of this ambitious series of the giants of piano in the 20th Century. I listen to it often with great enjoyment.

RE: Those of you who complained/rejoiced about Gould's abscence: he is not on the sampler, true, I believe for... purposes or something along those lines. Rudolf Serkin is also not included, but both are among the "greatest pianists of the 20th Century" set.

I was pleased after reading the list of performers to see that Gould's machine-gun jiffy-pop piano "playing" is not included. I would like to hear more of Skanavi tho.

Forget Somebody?.......2000-09-21

Although I understand that it must have been very diffiult to decide which pianists got put in the collection, let alone a two-disc sampler, I still feel that any anthology of the piano (other than one highlighting the romantic era)should contain at least one piece by Gould, yet this one doesn't. Gould has been almost unanimously hailed as one of the most influential artist of the twentieth century, yet he is not included on this disc. Other than that, a great buy.

Although a compilation of various pieces, this CD has the drama and sonic impact which will test the limits of your system. The orchestral presentations are first class. The sound stage presentations with the left to right width and the front to back depth give the listener an outstanding three dimensional impression of the actual orchestra instrument placement in the recording hall as well as the hall's ambient sound.

I have from time to time heard the expression 'sound windows' when discussing Speakers in an audio system. This CD will give you an excellent opportunity to check the clarity and precision of your system....in particular the bottom end capabilities of both the ampifier and the speakers.

I stronly recommend using this CD as a true Reference CD Rrecording when evaluating enhancements or upgrades to your system. Bring this CD to your dealer and listen carefully.

Get to know what your system is capable of and what it is not capable of delivering before and after listening tests for your new component.

WONDERFUL SAMPLER CD!.......2000-02-26

It does the trick. It literally samples the entire recent Reference Recordings catalogue, with varied excerpts from all kinds of music, a rare and exciting compilation wel worth the price. I reccommend it highly.

Tutti - Orchestral Sampler.......2000-02-02

This sampler is not your typical classical sampler. As seen from the track listing, it contains a diverse, but incongrous, selection of orchestral pieces, mixing Mozart, Vivaldi and Rimsky-Korsakov with more contemporary composers such as Bruckner, Arnold, and Paray. Although the list of selections is tempting and attractive to those who want to expand their musical knowledge, the combination just doesn't work. The jump from Mozart to Paray to Arnold to Vivaldi is unsettling to the ear, although it may be suited to a music education class. If, however, you seek less traditional (less soothing), less harmonic (more tempestuous), orchestral music, this may be the collection for you. The conducting and performances are very good. It certainly will never be background music for dinner!

Still One of My Favorites.......2005-07-29

I listen to a lot of music by various Windham Hill artists, Narada, and so on. Even after owning it for over 10 years, it is one of the most cherished works in my collection. It evokes a certain emotion for almost every song, and there is no filler. Every song is one of my favorites. Recently, I wore out my first copy and had to buy a replacement. This is a gem!

Almost 10 years later..........2004-06-10

I don't remember exactly when I first heard this CD, but it wasn't too long after it was released. So almost 10 years later, this remains one of my favorite CDs.

The music is emotive and contemplative, but creates that mood without being too serious. There's so much life in each selection that it allows for your "deep thinking" to take place on a snowy winter day in front of the fire or lounging in a hammock during the dog days of summer.

Some instrumental performances will never be much more than background music used to fill an empty space. But in contrast to those, each of the songs on this CD effortlessly takes you on a little journey. I have distinct images and emotions that accompany each song and yet it remains fresh each time I listen to it.

[Ok, I just reread all that! I'm not going to delete anything, but is anyone unsure of how I feel about the CD? :) Good grief! :) ]

I have had this CD for a few years and still find it to be one of my all time favorites. I have discovered some excellent artists from this CD and highly recommend it to everyone who loves piano music.

A great album to play at a party to get folks movin and groovin. Carl Weathersby's outstanding rendition of "The Things the Blues Will Make You Do" will get you thinkin. Billy Branch asks the timeless question, "Where's my Money?" and Sunnyland Slim sums up what many of us have experienced at one time or another in our pitiful lives, "You Used to Love Me". Fire up the boom box, pop open a six pack, invite your pals to your basement apartment, and have a low down blues shindig.

This sampler contains some of the finest blues available. The cuts on this album are just low down and good. I believe this music should prove to many out there that there are more than "2" great bluesmen on this planet (and they are truly great). However, on this album there are 16 other blues artists - and they are fantastic! This is one CD you can just pop into the player, put on continuous/shuffle play and do whatever you got to do. This music will make your day, or night, go better. Great sampler and recording Evidence! Thank God for the Blues.
