5 out of 5 stars ROCK meets CULT.......2007-05-22

This album is awesome, almost reminessent of some of the Doors style music, funny how he ended up as thier new singer.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SONG/MUSIC CRAFTING.......2007-05-16

Best Cult album in my humble opinion. Every sound you hear is deliberate and tasteful. I used to have this on cassette tape when it first came out. I had the later ones too but they pale in comparison with regards to the craftwork in this album. A lot of inventiveness in the music and the quality of the melodies are catchy (no you don't need to listen to this a gadzillion times to make yourself like it) The melodies hit the spot instantly. Bear in mind this was made back in the late 80s, so don't expect today's sound production.

4 out of 5 stars The Cult's somewhat forgotten debut........2006-04-11

The debut album by the Cult (although they'd released an EP and a single prior to this under the name Death Cult collected, along with some BBC sessions) as "Ghost Dance"), "Dreamtime" is an album that is noticably overlooked, likely because the band would reach enormous heights, both creatively and commercially, with their few albums, but "Dreamtime" should be evaluated for what it is-- a great record.

The Cult was formed when Ian Astbury, vocalist for the Southern Death Cult, determined to pursue a direction away from the gothic sound of that band and formed a group with Theatre of Hate guitarist Billy Duffy. Astbury, a singer of enormous presence, dominated the Southern Death Cult to the point where the band felt lopsided. But in Duffy, Astbury found a performer of equally strong personality and a foil. Recruiting guitarist Jamie Stewart on bass and eventually settling on drummer Nigel Preston, the group recorded first under the name Death Cult before shortening it to the Cult to deter the gothic connotations.

"Dreamtime" is, however seeped in gothic and post-punk influences, even if it does manage to get past them as much as it embraces them-- single "Spiritwalker" is probably the best example of this-- a glittering, aggressive track with a great riff reminiscent of the sort of work the gothic acts were doing but avoiding any sense of lifelessness and a vocal soaked in swagger by Astbury, the song is a summation of everything they'd done up until now and yet a pointer to the future. But while it was the only piece to garner any real attention as a single, there are a number of fantastic pieces on here-- the pounding, tribal rhythm-infused "Horse Nation" (also recorded on the "Ghost Dance" EP), the churning, driven, almost reggaeish "Go West", and the very much updated Southern Death Cult piece "A Flower in the Desert" (here presented as a swirling slice of goth with a muscular guitar line). Still, the album seems to fizzle a bit towards the end with the last few tracks being less memorable ("Rider in the Snow") or just plain bizarre (the galloping pop rhythms of the title track).

"Dreamtime" was reissued and remastered in Japan as a double with the "Live at the Lyceum" album-- the sonic improvement on this rerelease is well worth the price upgrade, and the Lyceum show is a great listen.

Bottom line-- "Dreamtime" gets overlooked and it shouldn't. This is an album that deserves more attention, recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Cult's last decent recording.......2005-07-27

This is a great post-punk/goth CD and continues where Ian left off with Death Cult/Southern Death Cult. Unfortunately, just about everything after this is mindless mullet-rock. If you prefer that genre then this CD (and earlier ones) is probably beyond you and you'll be wasting your money on a purchase unless you're collecting. I think at some point Ian fell and hit his head, woke up thinking he was Bon Jovi minus several IQ points after this CD. The next one, "Love", contains a few post-punk elements but pretty much marks their de-evolution from the Post-punk/Goth genre. However, Dreamtime is a great purchase and something you'll be listening to quite often.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Rock Meets Gothic Post-Punk.......2000-12-06

This is, in my opinion, a true masterpiece. The 80s is often criticized as being over-produced, sythetic and shallow. Like U2, the Cult had much more to offer. "Dreamtime" is a fantastic fusion of gothic punk walking hand-in-hand with Jim Morrison-ish imagery and influence. Eventually Led Zeppelin could be heard in the Cult's sound more than the Doors, but "Dreamtime" and "Love" envoke a unique-for-the-80s combination of lyrical mysticism and spiritual passion with an insurgent rythmn and sonic punch.

Songs like "Spiritwalker" and "Horse Nation" drive forth the mystic imagery with a rocking groove, while the darker songs like "Butterflies" and "Bone Bag" have a darker edge that has as much to lend to Nick Drake as it does to Nick Cave.

This is a phenomenal and, at least in the States, unfortunately underappreciated milestone in the Cult's career. The Cult were, are, and shall be a solid band and influence on new bands for years to come.

Album Description

Music to De-Stress supports deepening levels of mind/body revitalization. Slowing theme and variations are from Mahler's Fourth Symphony Adagio. Instrumentation includes string quintet, oboe, flute, and piano. Combining faraway foghorns and ocean tides with the psychoacoustically-refined music of Arcangelos, this recording is leisurely and unhurried- designed to soothe and strengthen a fatigued nervous system.

5 out of 5 stars Music to De-Stress .......2006-08-20

This is great student working music. Play it when the class is writing or reading for a gentle brain boost for greater concentration. This is just one in a series of music to work by. I bought 4 different titles. I highly recommend all of them. Just love it and use it everyday in my second grade class!

3 out of 5 stars Great music to sleep by!.......2005-11-03

I bought this CD because I am a Mahler scholar, and the CD bases all of its material on bits and pieces of the third movement of Gustav Mahler's Fourth Symphony. While I am fascinated that this group chose a Classical work to rewrite and de-construct in this way, I found the several "variations" on the piece a little boring. On the other hand, I am not a fan of New Age music, but of Classical music. If you want to sleep, or to relax, this is the CD for you! You can just feel smug that you are listening to Classical music at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars De-Stress to sleep.......2002-02-28

I play my Music to De-Stress CD every night while I'm going to sleep. The beautiful music and nature sounds are so pure and peaceful...You will be lulled into a deep and peaceful sleep effortlessly. My children have come to love this CD as much as I have!

5 out of 5 stars Terrance McKenna.......2007-01-18

Terrance McKenna goes outside the box the majority herd inhabit, so if this frightens you little one, don't concern your self. If you feel what Terrance is about, then this won't dissapoint.
To the reviewer right before me: Why would you buy this if you don't want to hear Terrance talk throughout it? I guess you assumed it was an all-music CD. But, THEN you type a review on this site complaining about the annoying guy "rambling" all through the thing on subjects you maybe might not have the capacity to understand or open-mindedness or courage to even consider? What an amazing outcome! Thanks for sharing your mistake with us!

2 out of 5 stars Not Good For Background Music.......2005-12-31

I've enjoyed the more recent offerings from Spacetime Continuum, so I thought this might be something worthy of my collection. I was wrong. While the music is good, it's often overpowered by the annoying, nasally ramblings of Terence McKenna, a man who randomly spouts off ideas that only a tweaked-out raver could appreciate. Of the six tracks contained on this CD, there were only two that were really worth listening to again: the only two that Terence, thankfully, was not a part of.

5 out of 5 stars Tonight 4 Ur edification N amusement 3 raves 2 interregnums w/ music by spacetime continuum w/ words N ideas by Terence Mckenna.......2005-08-04

Terence lays it out, an overview of his ideas. He raps up so much in symbiotic overview of prehistory and how what's happening in this modern Archaic Revival and where that's leading us. All of this is told to some of the most totally tripped out jazzed rocking techno and it all just combines into something you can groove to.

Mckenna knows how to Rave, giving us insight into shamanism and the plane world that surrounds us everyday. He speaks of the human mind our body's connectiveness to nature with community, sexuality, and intelligence that leads to our eventual jump to hyperspace.

This CD trip is a cosmic journey taking you up! Terence explains the DMT experience. DMT is a chemical inside the human brain that is classified as an illegal substance, so under the current law every human being is in possession of a class one drug.

Terence explains humans are the result of billions and billions of years, that our bodies are the cutting edge of organistic transformation of matter in this cosmos. The most novel thing known to humanity in existence is what sets behind your eyes. We are nature's most brilliant experiment thus far. We are capable of using our energy to create temples, art, bombs to use our energy against an enemy. But things are changing, the world is about to transform itself, supernatural reality is pulling us forward into collective transformation.

The psychedelic shaman is the one who can receive messages from the future to change the present, Someone who has dissolved the boundaries between the past, present and future. We are part of the planetary destiny. What psychedelics mean is a celebration of life of love and reemergence of a community not of consumerism.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Picture and Some Great Songs Too.......2006-10-17

The most interesting thing about this release to me is the song "Dreamtime" because it sounds like a song John Lennon might have made had he been around in 1985. It takes trivial pop riffs and "warps" them so that reality, which is otherwise quite dull and oppressive, becomes enhanced. Also, a certain anxiety creeps into the music as it approaches the end of the song. In fact, like many of Lennon's songs, it goes out of its way to crystallize the energy it has created and pop models based on blues cadences offer the best format for doing this. It captures the lightheaded state of "sitting here doing time."

Otherwise, The Stranglers soften their grip on this one with an Iggy Pop ripoff, "Was It You?" (Yes, it is me and I'm going to sue you guys.) Also, we have the likable "Ghost Train," with its Bono/Jim Morrison laments and assorted whistles. All of the songs are quite good.

The cassette ends with two very excellent songs: "Mayan Skies" and "Too Precious." "Too Precious" is arguably the best song I have ever heard. It takes Latin music and runs it throught the heads of mad Englishmen, who are musically madly talented.

The cd has additional tracks that I can't comment on.

4 out of 5 stars Growth doesn't always hurt.......2005-06-18

My first experience of The Stranglers was the "Black & White" album. I've been a fan of just about ALL their albums since!

The Stranglers started out as a harsh, edgy sounding band whose style was each member playing a different riff(s) held together by Jet Black's rock-steady drumming.

In time, they began smoothing-out & becoming more lush. The vocals going from a snarl to a murmuring croon. They're still The Stranglers, mind you!

This album marks their most musically mature work(s) without becoming saccahrine or schmaltzy. It's very "Euro", but it's not pop. It's more concrete than Kraftwerk, having roots in the late punk era. A very interesting album that's easy to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Move over Beethoven... here come the Stranglers.......2002-05-08

I'm a big fan of the Stranglers ever since a friend turned me on to their early stuff like "Golden Brown" and "Midnight Summer's Dream". This album holds true to that style with songs like "Always the Sun", "Mayan Skies" and the title track. But my favorite and possibly all-time fave Stranglers cut is "Too Precious", an absolute masterpiece and culmination of the Stranglers unique talent for fine lyrics and musical arrangement. My grandfather, a classical music aficianado, would have loved this piece. The way the bass carries a hypnotic beat throughout, while the guitar and and synthesizers build to a crescendo at the end. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Stranglers are always worth 5 stars.......2002-03-01

well nearly always. This Album is for everyone who loves good pop music that gets not boring. Listening Tips: Always The Sun, Mayan Skies, Shankin' Like A Leaf, Too Precious. If you like the old stuff '77-'79 this one is probably too soft, oh well The stranglers were luckily never Motorhead or AC/DC and published 100 times the same album just with different titles. GET This one!

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre Stranglers.......2001-06-26

Hate to disagree with the other reviewers but as an avid Stranglers fan, this is just so so as far as they go. Granted "Always The Sun, Big In America, and Nice N Nice" are good solid songs but the rest of this is rather tepid and uninteresting. FOr an introduction to the Stranglers I would recommend "La Folie" or "Aural Sculpture".

5 out of 5 stars Unique and Perfect.......2006-08-11

What a stunning album. Its really hard to get your hands on, but worth it if you are into ambient music. It would almost fall into the ambient house genre if it had more beats but falls short of it.

Its not ideal for the ambient purists who want something allong the lines of biosphere, Brian Eno and Steve Roach. It is a little more mellodic but brilliant in its own right.

If your into ambient/chill and you can find this album. I would suggest you buy it if you can find it.

This CD grows on you. I bought this CD ages ago, listened to it a couple of times and distregarded it for a while. I started playing it a few months later and now it rates as one of my favorite Trance CD's. The music is excellent for chilling out or for those times where you need a little escape from the plastic bands of today. Thumbs up.

Amazon.com essential recording

This 1988 masterpiece, inspired by Roach's visits to the Australian outback and his work with didgeridoo master David Hudson, set the template for much of Roach's future work. In some sense he has simply refined the album's organic blend of brush-stroke synthesizer colors and ethnic-inspired rhythms ever since, with many glorious results. But this journey into Australian aboriginal mythology--the Dreamtime was an Eden-like period of natural harmony presaged by the arrival of extraterrestrial ancestors--remains a trademark and a wholly original work. Like Bruce Chatwin's seminal book on aboriginal mythos, The Songlines, Return is an outsider's document that feels like the very lay of the land itself; the piece "Songline," with its driving dumbek rhythms, reflects the rocky terrain as ably as "A Circular Ceremony" evokes the vastness and mystery of the desert expanse. A true classic. --James Rotondi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Still stands the test of time.......2007-05-09

Roach's style has changed a lot. A lot of new ambient artists have come along since this release, such as Stars of the Lid, Deepspace [...]
and Vidna Obmana, and yet this stands near the top of the field. His style is more complex and layered now, but elements of this recording are still evident in some of his newer stuff, like mantram, and new life dreaming.

Roach became a bit obsessed with the Australian Outback at one stage in his career, and you can hear that he nailed the feeling of the place quite well. Having lived in Australia most of my life, I can hear what he was trying to do-the sense of starkness, and impenetrability in the deserts here is very tangible. Very impressive Mr. Roach.

5 out of 5 stars Took by breath away!.......2007-01-27

Words cannot do this work of art any justice with this review. Spanning two-CDs, Steve Roaches 1988 magnum-opus "Dreamtime Returns" is arguably my favorite release of his to date even though I've since gotten other albums by him as well.

I first heard this album when browsing through a local public library already having his "Dreaming Now Then" compilation. I felt it would be great to try this one out but I never expected it to be this wonderful. Though I can argue about some other songs from his previous and subsequent releases, there is a transcendance that is found on "Dreamtime Returns" that I don't think is as strong on his other albums. DR had me entranced the moment I first started playing it.

"Songline" is almost pure Aboriginal paradise with mostly traditional drums and a spine-tingling didjeridou, a strong contrast to the rest of the album. "Circular Ceremony" is so beautiful that it worked up a tear or two in my eyes. The song has a haunting, minor note melody combined with rain sticks to give a sense of stillness near an approaching thunderstorm.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute "Must-have" Roach classic.......2006-05-17

This is my favorite album of any artist of any genre. There are no words to describe the subtle moods and emotional depths of this work - you simply have to listen to it. If you're looking for a mysterious, hypnotic journey into the wild and primal world of the ancient Aborigines of Australia, then start your "walkabout" here.

5 out of 5 stars It's just that good..........2005-10-26

This is one of the great Steve Roach albums. It is a must own, but make sure you buy the remastered version, which Steve remastered himself. If you're a new progressive-ambient listener, this is a great place to start. Five stars. If I could, I'd give it more.

4 out of 5 stars good.......2005-08-23

The second half of the cd is what i bought it for, very deeply calming.
