Editorial Reviews
Tom Kidd, Music Connection
"Novak is now returning to her original motivation for getting on the web: to bring her solo piano style, which she calls 'cinematic classical,' to the masses through the power of cyberspace. The resulting collection, Reign of Fire, takes Novak from cyberspace to the heavens, where she uses her music to interpret the power of the stars. Film and TV music supervisors should take note of Novak's talents."
Product Description
A 16-piece work for solo piano, Reign of Fire, is a concept album celebrating the parallels between the life and death of the stars with the passage of individuals through their lives. Powerful and dynamic, and drawing on Novak's performance and film scoring background, Reign of Fire is unique instrumental music that combines elements from classical and jazz genres while remaining a deeply original statement.

Album Description
Much like the first record, this album was founded in a situation of self-imposed isolation, with the band operating in states of little or no sleep, varying levels of intoxication, and physical confinement.

Lullabyes for staying up all night........2007-06-24
I just purchased "Sings Reign" along with "Telegraphs in Negative" today, and I have not stopped listening to them.
'Post-rock' as they call it... faux-classical as I sometimes like to cal it. It is definitely in the vein of bands such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mogwai, Lull, Noise Gate, Silver Mt. Zion, etc... Yes, there are members from GYBE in this band, and though the sounds are probably in the same genre, I would not necissarily classify them as similar. Perhaps to the untrained ear it would be considered the same, but Fire to Flames seems to veer much more towards the experimental drone/atmospheric/static/randomness in nature. If you're not sure what I mean, or think that this describes GYBE already, you will see what I mean if you purchase this record.
I highly recommend both of Fire to Flames' recordings. I feel it inspiring, haunting, calming, cerebral, and any other "makes me sound smart" adjective you can throw in there. Like I said, I have been listening to these records almost non-stop since getting them this morning, and it puts me in an interesting place. I actually reccomend this over most other post-rock I've been exposed to.
space.......2004-06-30
while there are millions of ambient artists out there, they dont have the sound that set fire to flames have. to go along with the other reviewer, there is an influence of the godspeed members but it is not at all like the albums made on constellation records. there is much more space, and mood set by eery strings and noise. it is kind of like infinity symbol of godspeeds, the more desolate, expansive sound and less grand compositions. its deff. something to check out if your into that kind of music but do not go in expecting another 'post rock' or whatever you want to call that genre. its in a field of its own pulling strings with noise artists with sampling and tape minipulation. enjoy.
If your a Godspeed fan............2004-05-28
Then you must check the album out. "flames" is made up of 13 musicians from Montreal, 5 of which are Godspeed members. You can really hear the Godspeed members influence on this album. The songs are still highly stings driven and the dark atmosphere hasn't changed at all. One of the nicest things about this album is that they decided to shorten the length of their songs. It's nice to hear them take a different approach in their song constuction. All in all, this sounds and feels just like another Godspeed album. It's powerful, beautiful and completely unique. A must listen for fans of Godspeed, Mogwai and Sigur ros.

Simply amazing..........2007-02-08
I'm going to make this review short and sweet because there is little to be said that hasn't already been said. I think this is Capleton's best album, he uses some awesome riddims, you might recognize them from some Sean Paul songs or Richie Spice's "Ghetto Girl."
Definitely check this out, you won't be disappointed. There isn't a single song on this album that doesn't make you want to start blasting his music and dancing.
If you're just getting into reggae/dancehall, this is a great place to start!!!
STRAIGH FIYAH CAPLETON A BLAZE.......2006-01-19
look at the title, it describes the tracks, pure fire a run tingz on dis album Capleton has not let us down not like the Leaders Let The People Down:P
The Fireman is bringing the fire .......2005-09-27
Capleton has been in the buisness for a while, and I have to say this is one of his best albums of all time. Its not up there with More Fire or Still Blazing but its close. He's a true bobo Rastaman that uplifts your spirit with his wicked riddims and tough lyrics. He's sending messages through his music just like Anthony B, Sizzla, and Luciano. I would highly reccomend this CD for any fan of Reggae Dancehall music
Don't Fear The Fire.......2005-03-12
I am a great appreciator of Capleton's fire and power. I don't agree with his occasional highlighting of homosexuals as the prevailing sign of human corruption. For the record, I see unfettered capitalism with it's corollary greed and exploitation of human/mineral/animal resources as infinitely more harmful than how people choose to express their gender/sexuality. I'm pleased to hear Capleton, on Reign of Fire, focus on global matters and cease his indictment of people who are, for the most part, unable to defend themselves from prejudice and abuse. It's important to note that his latest VP release, "Reign of Fire" avoids any mention of that subject that has some attempting to silence him. There's no coded language, no blatant reference. Nothing at all. Relax the repression of Capleton and enjoy the vibes as he chants down babylon.
Capleton is one of the most vibrant artists of any musical style performing today. I often wonder what a collaboration between Capleton and Angelique Kidjo, Carlinhos Brown, Femi Kuti or, better yet, Immortal Technique might sound like. I can imagine a musical incendiary device that the could reach rabble-rousing proportions. When King Shango says "That Day Will Come" you know he means it. And it's easy to feel inspired to join Capleton's Army. He's right when he says "They will never share" which is why he has to bun dem. Yes Iyah!
Reign of Fire is a brilliant album but I fear that most listeners don't really want Capleton to grow. If you want pure Fyah tracks I think that More Fire and Still Blazin' are more effective demonstrations of Capleton in that style. You can even look to "The People Dem" for the incessant fyah blazing. On Reign of Fire, you'll find 7 recent hits and 15 brand new tracks! This is not another singles compilation. This is a focused effort to speak directly to the audience that he understands so well.
Reign of Fire has no shortage of brilliant moments ranging from hardcore Ragga to Dancehall Roots ("Real Hot", "Jah Is My Everything", "Remember The Days"). Almighty also ventures occasionally into a delivery that you'd more likely expect from Luciano or Bushman, with the mellow roots tracks. Capleton lacks the vocal depth/range of Luciano or Bushman but appreciators can quickly get past that to feel that righteous Rasta spirit that the subject matter needs to push into the proper zone of righteous upliftment. Capleton means every word he says, he's the ideological heir to Peter Tosh's legacy. You'd be wise to buy it today.
Reigning and Still Blazing Fire.......2004-12-05
Like he always chants, big riddim for big tunez..Then if that is what you are looking for then Reign of Fire is the album. Big conscious riddims in this CD, like Ton Load (One For The Road Riddim) and The Leader Let The People Down, Jah Is Everything, That Day Will Come (Hard Times Riddim), Never Share - Burn Dem (Forever Loving Jah Riddim). He also included some dancehall tunez, Who You calling Nigga; a very interesting and unique tune, Or Wah ( Renaissance Riddim) and one of the biggest summer dancehall tune, In her Heart (Chrome Riddim). Also got some for the ladies or let's say romantic, Sunshine Girl and Remember the Days, RtD is Wicked.
If you are looking for Dangerzone,Bun Dung Dreddie, or Couyah Couyah type of songs you won't find them in this CD.
Conscious vibes from the Fire Man himself, The prophet is reigning and still blazing more fire..Great CD. The Prophet still keeps the fire burning.

Ugly, harsh and brilliant.......2006-06-17
It's easy to imagine many listeners turning off this score after a few minutes or so - the music is not attractive in a traditional sense and there are a lot of `sounds' as oppose to music. The score is unrelentlessly harsh, discordant and terrifying with no comforting upbeat moments and a tone which is always hellish and depressing. The planet Earth has become one big ruin and battleground with few places in which to hide from the beasts and we can feel the characters' constant awareness of the dangers they face. The lighter moments are just as bleak, filled with unnerving suspense and often give way to terrifyingly powerful brass attacks as the dragons make their appearance. The gorgeous main theme does offer a little contrast and hope though, but not much. First introduced in Meet Van Zam, it starts off brooding and quietly heroic and then develops into a superb militaristic statement with snare drums and horns, suggesting that this brave new character may lead them to victory.
As with his later Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Shearmur's action writing is superb throughout although in a completely different style. However, there is some fun to be had identifying certain sounds and rhythms that Shearmur would again utilise on Sky Captain and there are quite a few...The first track is a highlight, beginning with low rumblings and eerie electronic sounds, gradually getting louder, layering on industrial sounds and low strings. It keeps getting louder until it becomes a scary and powerful piece of orchestra and percussion. It's a great start to the score giving a sense of the beasts' awakening and rise from the depths. Field attack is another highlight - it's exciting and suspenseful with some immensely powerful brass writing and shrilling high woodwinds. Marauders is another favourite using an exciting militaristic rhythm with slicing strings and staccato brass that Shearmur would use again for An Aquatic Escape in Sky Captain. The Ruins at Pembury is another standout cue and is absolutely terrifying. It starts off highly suspenseful and quietly with bass drum hits and a constant swirling electronic `wind' - you just know something is going to happen and it does! The brass comes in again all harsh and discordant and is absolutely deafening and terrifying, sounding like the war cries of the flying beasts. It is a stunning cue and gets me every time because I can never quite remember when that `jump moment' comes. The brass throughout the score is at times some of the most powerful I've heard but none so much as in the penultimate cue, Magic Hour. The brass section here, accompanied by choir, is truly immense, sounding as if it has 5 times the number of usual players - in fact the music is so big and brutal and powerful at times that you forget that these sounds are actually being made by human beings sitting in a recording studio wearing jeans and t-shirts following some strange symbols on a page! The score ends with Rebirth which offers the relief listeners are probably begging for by this stage. It starts with gentle strings, electronics and a beautiful echo like flute effect before developing into a welcome rendition of the theme for Van Zam. It ends with a very brief brass fanfare, the scores' only upbeat moment.
With this score, Shearmur has crafted a masterwork of powerhouse orchestral writing and moody suspense in a similar vein to the kind of modern scoring you'd expect from Elliot Goldenthal or Don Davis for his Matrix scores - it's dissonant and brutal and makes good use of electronic sounds and the arsenal of modern orchestral technique. It's hard to imagine that this is from the same composer who has scored such largely generic films as the `romcoms' Laws of Attraction and Wimbledon but then Shearmur is well known for his versatility. He is however, absolutely wasted on films like that should really be scoring the `big scores'.
For me, Reign of Fire confirms that Edward Shearmur is the best new talent out there. Maybe there are some dull moments here and there but it has the stamp of a master throughout, (special mention must go to orchestrator Robert Elhai for his work here and he would again do a top job on Sky Captain - let's hope its a collaboration that continues). The cues are beautifully crafted, with as much variety and invention that a film like this could allow and the tone is always perfect for the film. The apocalyptic settings are portrayed well in the score and I like the way Shearmur uses the high brass to represent the cries of the dragons. I think that's what makes the score so terrifying; by giving the dragons a voice, they become `real' and perhaps we relate to that on some instinctive level...
Despite the fact that most of Shearmur's other scores to date are not as noteworthy, you should be under no doubt that he will surely become one of the more important figures in film scoring and I would advise you to check out his absolutely stunning score for Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, his best work to date, if you have any doubts.
Reign of Sound.......2003-07-16
Edward Shearmur has again surprised us with an enormous sounding score to the underrated genre film "Reign of Fire". There is no pretty romantic themes here, not even a chance to take a breath during this recordings mass of pure action cues. If you enjoy well performed powerhouse orchestral music that hits you like a black metal band then this is for you. Certainly this score is not for everyone but if you are like me and saw the film and was taken by the score then what you heard in the film is what you get here, 50 minutes and 40 seconds worth of Fire- Breathing Sound
Full of fire and reigns at the top.......2003-01-09
I have not been familiar with Edward Shearmur's scores until this one. I decided to give it a try just for the fun of it and I was blown away. This is awesome music that really burns. For the most part, the music contains tons and tons of brass, eerie electronics, wild string passages, wailing woodwinds, and tons of militaristic percussion, especially the snare drum. There is plenty of exciting action music, heroic passages, and driving rhythms in this score. A lot of what is heard in this score is similar to what Elliot Goldenthal writes largely because the orchestrator of this score, Robert Elhai, Goldenthal uses in just about every score. The London Metropolitan Orchestra performs this very difficult score with remarkable stamina and courage. Knockout and I do mean knockout action music can be found in "Enter the Dragon", "Field Attack", "Marauders",
"Archangels", "Inferno", and "Magic Hour". "Field Attack" contains some exciting and rhythmic string passages, along with driving and militaristic snare drums. "Meet Van Zan" contains the main theme which is found in other tracks as well. It is a majestic and noble horn motif played around a militaristic percussive rhythm. "Magic Hour" and "Rebirth" contain music that is more toward the lighter side, as the other tracks mainly focused on the darker side. The incredible brass fanfare main theme closes out the soundtrack in "Rebirth" that ends things in a heroic fashion. If you are into Elliot Goldenthal or like the score to The Matrix by Don Davis, then you will absolutely love this. This is superb and outstanding film music.
A BIG SCORE!!!.......2003-01-01
If you like your film music to be filled with lovely themes, rich harmonies and an all-round "nice feel" that makes you "feel nice" then do not touch this soundtrack! However, if you often feel in the mood for powerhouse action scoring in the vein of the Alien movie scores or similar violent film scores then grab this awesome soundtrack as soon as possible!
Like so many others I was wary of this one due to the past compositional styles of Edward Shearmur. But what I found was one of the most brilliant action/millitant/agressive scores to come out in years. It never becomes repetative or boring and it is often filled with rich orchestration and wonderful electronic sound effects. Shearmur has now moved up to the big leage in my opinion and I look forward to hearing his work in the future!
Good Score for a good movie.......2002-12-29
I think the music from this movie set a perfect pace for the events in the film. Its an action movie with an action score that goes with it well. I personally think that the music helped move the story along well and helped set the pace in what is a well thought out movie. (and it was a GOOD movie)

Cinematic Classical strikes a chord.......2000-10-25
Listening to Reign of Fire is like hearing a a score to a film that lies just beyond memory -- the poweful and well-defined themes seem to tell a story. Both the music (composed by Novak) and the performance are excellent. Anyone expecting wishy-washy New Age or ambient repetition is bound to be startled -- this is theme-based composition drawing equally from classical and jazz styles. The organization behind this concept album is also interesting. Rather than astrological links, Novak has connected each piece to a particular star in the sky visible during one season. Each composition describes a progressively later stage in a person's life -- and each associated star, is, in turn, at a later stage of its life cycle. Highly recommended stimulating intellectual listening!

Great.......2003-01-14
This would easily make my top 10 albums list and might just crack the illustrious 5 desert island discs.
This is one one of those cds you wont listen to for a few months then dig out and just have it on a continual loop of obsession for a week. The music has moments of quietness, loudness, grooviness and everything in between, it may not be to everyone's tastes but if you are into Godspeed You Black Emperor you will love this CD, similar sound but in many ways I find this superior to GYBE...
unbelievably beautiful........2002-09-11
a heart broken by a dying dog should aspire to be so darkly gorgeous and true as sings reign rebuilder. wherever one listens to it, one's surroundings become overtaken by it as the perfect soundtrack to the perfect film. the samples of transients are unlike any i've ever heard. the music will make you think about your very existence. pay any amount to own this. it is truth. 60 percent improvised 40 percent written 100 percent the greatest record of two thousand one.
Not for the casual listner.......2002-02-24
Set Fire to Flames focuses a lot more on noise than other artists on the label. This does not detract from the overall sound, fortunately. In fact, in the right mindset, the feel is very much like A Silver Mt. Zion, only more intense. Those who are simply moving on from Godspeed You Black Emperor! should probably sample other groups from the label first.
