Disc 2 of this new collection, the solo piano pieces, has been doing good service for well over a decade. Marks plays a good variety of Gottschalk music, sparkles in the virtuoso pieces, and even manages to keep a straight face when he plays sentimental tripe like "The Last Hope" and "The Dying Poet." As the only important composer produced by the U.S. in the 19th century, Gottschalk still deserves our attention, and his folk-influenced pieces are still fun to hear. Oddly, the four-hand piano recording is inferior to the solo piano disc; it sounds thin and shrill, evidently not the pianists' fault since Marks plays with beautiful tone in his solo disc. Also, more of this music comes from Gottschalk's sentimental salon style, making the program a bit less attractive. But there is still a lot of fun to be had, especially in the concluding "Grande Tarantelle." So, if you regard disc 1 as a free bonus and disc 2 as the real matter, you're definitely getting your money's worth here. --Leslie Gerber

If you don't love this-you're deaf..or you don't know blues!.......2000-10-26
Whether you are a guitarist, or not - you can't fail to be impressed by this CD. Otis has one again excelled himself with the aid of Debbie Davies and Anson Funderburgh, not to mention all the other fine players. Every track on this CD just exudes fine blues and r&b and I strongly recommend it to anyone. Check Otis out live too to see probably the best Blues you will ever see!
Ghastly Guitar Phrasing.......1999-11-18
Anson is fine, but the other guitars here are unsoulful and tasteless. What an over-estimated player Grand is! Notes not in the right places and he speaks when he should be quiet -- offenses which beset most british bluesmen. Like Clapton, Otis just doesn't get it. I'll take 50's B.B. King any day.
Guitars on Fire!!!.......1999-09-10
What a great blues feast this CD is! From the blistering opening cut of 'Guitars on Fire' right through to the soulful final track 'The Big Prayer' the level of commitment, passion and sheer quality never falls below 110%.
And how could it? The list of musicians contributing to this CD reads like a Who's Who of Blues Greats. The guitars of Otis Grand, Debbie Davies and Anson Funderburgh contrast and compliment each other beautifully. The vocals of Sugar Ray Norcia and Brother Roy Oakley are pure gold, and the rhythm section of Mudcat Ward's bass and Neil Gouvin's drums cook up the coolest groove. Add to this guest musicians of the calibre of Ike Turner (good grief!), and Tony Coleman and the 'Bee Horns' from the BB King band.
The reason I am so impressed with this CD is because it works so well, the whole being much greater than the sum of its parts.
Otis Grand, who assembled this banquet, obviously knows the blues like the back of his hand. This CD has certainly wetted my appetite for more. He must have a helluva live act!
The Best Just Keeps Getting Better!!.......1999-09-10
It seems pointless to me reviewing a new Otis Grand release. Let's face it, the man just doesn't do bad; and when he surrounds himself with musicians of the calibre of co-headliners Davies and Funderburgh, vocalists Sugar Ray Norcia and Roy Oakley, a rhythm section comprising Neil Gouvin and 'Mudcat' Ward on drums and bass, Anthony Geraci and Ike Turner on keys, along with B.B.King's horn section and drummer, Tony Coleman, who also contributes a couple of vocals .... you get what I'm trying to say? It is testament indeed to his standing in the world blues community that Grand can pick up a phone and assemble such a line-up to help with his project. And believe me, even though the billing is shared, this is Otis Grand's project! From the choice of material to the classy production, Grand has pulled out all the stops to ensure everything is perfect. Since playing on Joe Louis Walker's 'Great Guitars', Grand has been consumed with expanding the concept. Enlisting the help of Funderburgh and Davies, writing a bunch of new songs and setting aside ten days in the studio for everybody to bounce ideas off each other, Grand has produced an album worthy of following the multi-award winning 'Perfume and Grime'. From the explosive opening of 'Guitars On Fire' to the down-home steel guitar closer 'The Big Prayer', everything in between is a gem. Having already started to break big in the States with his last effort, if this album doesn't do it for Croydon's best known American, English nationalised blues guitarist then nothing will. With this album alone, Grand shows that he has more talent in his little finger than most of the hyped up super-stars being paraded as musicians today. 'Grand Union' is certainly one of my contenders for album of the year, so it follows that it comes highly recommended. But then again ... you already knew that!
PS - This is my review published last year in Britain's 'Blueprint' magazine. I still stick with what I said at the time. Steve Cooke

Rachmaninov Rarities.......2007-06-18
This disc contains all of the music Sergei Rachmaninov composed for chorus and orchestra. The foremost piece (and the composer's favorite) is The Bells, which receives a magnificent performance conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky (from 1991) and played by the State Symphony Orchestra of the Ministry of Culture. The soloists are excellent with tenor Igor Slutskovsky singing the first movement with the brightness and cheerfulness associated with birth; Natalia Mihailova sings with nice control and sensitivity in the marriage section but is a little thin on her high notes. Bass Mikail Lanskoy is fabulous in the final movement in conveying the desolation of death.
The Three Russian Folk Songs was written in 1927 and was first performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski on the same program with the premiere of the Fourth Piano Concerto. The first two songs were suggested to the composer by Chaliapin and the third was performed by a popular Russian singer at a small social gathering. The songs, perhaps not surprisingly have to do with dislocation - in the first a duck and drake are crossing a bridge when the duck is frightened away and in the second a wife is abandoned by her husband for the winter and the third has to do with a faithless wife. The cantata Spring was Rachmaninov's first large work for chorus. One is reminded of liturgical chants with the chorus singing and the music is dramatic, a precursor to The Bells.
The performances of the Folk Songs and Spring, conducted by Alexander Gauk, come from 1958 and 1968, and are well recorded. The performances are spirited and with the chorus doing a splendid job. The recording of The Bells has much clearer sound with better engineering but, altogether, the recordings on this disc are beautifully performed and should not be missed by anyone interested in Rachmaninov.

KEYBOARD FIREWORKS BUT FUZZY SOUND.......2000-03-29
LEONARD PENNARIO IS A VIRTUOSO AT THE KEYBOARD BUT NOT VERY WELL KNOWN IN THE GENERAL CLASSICAL SCENE. HIS NAME DOES NOT CARRY THE SAME RECOGNITION AS WATTS, ASHKENAZY, RICHTER OR AX BUT HIS PLAYING IS AS FLUID AND EXPRESSIVE. I GIVE HIM A LOT OF CREDIT FOR FOCUSING HIS TALENTS ON THIS LESSER KNOWN AMERICAN COMPOSER (HE HAS 2 ALBUMS ON THE ANGEL LABEL WITH THE MUSIC OF GOTTSCHALK) AND I'VE YET TO HEAR THE COMPOSER PLAYED WITH MORE FIRE AND BRILLIANCE. THE BOMBAST OF "THE UNION", "BAMBULA" AND "THE BANJO" ARE NICELY BALANCED BY THE TENDERNESS OF "THE DYING POET", "CRADLE SONG" AND "DANZA". THE PIANISM IS FLAWLESS YET THE RECORDING CAN SOUND FUZZY AND EVEN HARSH AT TIMES. DESPITE THE ACOUSTIC SHORTCOMINGS, THE 2 DISCS IN THE SERIES ARE A GREAT INTRODUCTION TO "AMERICA'S FIRST MUSICAL SUPERSTAR" AND THE LINER NOTES OFFER A FINE SYNOPSIS OF THE COMPOSER'S FASCINATING LIFE AND WORK.

Teen Idles, Minor Threat, Egg Hunt, Embrace, Pailhead, Fugazi, and this 2 songer. It is excellant, quite like Minor Threat and I wonder if they didn't just record these two under this name just for the hell of it. It is a must have....

This is a good CD and everything, but it sounds a lot like Minor Threat (not a complaint really, just a comment.) If you like Minor Threat, buy this.
