As a sax player, I bought this album because I've become a big fan of Harry Allen. A long time ago, the tenor sax style got basically divided in two: Coleman Hawkins became the exponent of the "vertical" style--playing in a highly technical manner and mostly concerned with solos of harmonic density. Lester Young, on the other hand, came to epitomize the "horizontal" style, with an emphasis on lyricism and with melodic interpretation being more important than the chordal structure.

That's an oversimplification, of course; but I think you'll find that tenor players have tended to gravitate to one side or the other when constructing their solos.

For my part, I've always loved the followers of Lester Young: Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Scott Hamilton, Greg Fishman, and of course, Harry Allen. If you like lyrical tenor playing you'll certainly like Harry Allen.

But what has surprised me as I've listened to this record, is how much the leader, Bob Alberti, shines as well. Of course, even though Allen is listed as a (featured) sideman, he always claimed the lion's share of my listening attention. But the more I play this CD, the more I am drawn to Alberti's piano, and the more I think of his solos as more than just a setting, accompaniment, or a foil to Allen's tenor. Alberti's playing, too, has a strong sense of lyricism, a sense of the original melody lurking there in the changes. This is really quite astonishing, I think, and I have decided to try some Alberti trio work to see what he is like when he is the only melody player.

I love this CD. Relaxing and Romantic. Wonder what ever happen to Bob Alberti, I sure wish he will make more albums.

This outing is headed by a guy who fears that mainstream jazz is losing its listeners and decided to do something about it . The music, as you can see from the track listings, is composed of standards from some great composers. This album concentrates on harmony, melody and rhythm (as pointed out in the liner notes)......the elements that have made jazz a loved and revered art form.

The mix of tempos is very good but my favorites are the wonderful ballads, "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry" (Julie Styne and Sammy Cahn), "The Trouble With Hello Is Goodbye"( Dave Grusin/Marilyn and Alan Bergman) and "Nancy With The Laughing Face"(Jimmy Van Heusen and Phil Silvers).

A special bonus is that the tenor sax player is Harry Allen, a guy who has really come along the last 5 years, whose style is comparable somewhat to Stan Getz and Scott Hamilton.

This is no risk in recommending this to anyone......it's just good jazz!

Very relaxing. Be careful when operating heavy machinery while listening to this CD. One should not drive while under the influence of the gentle rhythms of this CD. ;O)

I've thoroughly enjoyed this CD. It is very relaxing and helps you get through those sleepless nights. I had listened to this CD when I came home from the hospital and was in such great pain. It helped me relax and concentrate on the music and cleared my mind of negative thoughts.
