Not too many people can take the time off he did and make this good of album. There might be one or two tracks you may skip, but for the 10 out of 12 songs you wont skip a beat. The rhymes are are good as they get. His wit and all-around knowlegde is displayed throughout cd. A must buy or a must have!!!

Simon Says isn't on this record, nothing that resembles it is either. If he had been able to release his second solo album in maybe 2001, there might have been. But with 8 years in between ventures, he's matured quite a bit. The same outstanding wordplay, imagery and mind bending lyricism is here, and the production is more than solid.

The only weak song, which is still enjoyable because of his humor and word play, is Bar Trap. If you're patient enough to listen to the whole song, Trilogy is fantastic and one of the more original, clever ballads to come out of hip hop in years.

"New York City respect my game like Joe Namath/and I protect my name, like yo anus/in prison..." - off the track 'Desire'.

I had originally downloaded this album months ago. But I felt compelled to buy it after seeing him perform a few songs off it with a live band at the Rock the Bells concert.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but you gotta get the Best Buy version.......2007-07-25

This is my first Pharoah Monch album. Having listened to some of his collaborations over the years ('Dub Plate' w/Wyclef, 'Love' w/J Dilla, etc.), I knew he was going to have a classic album with this one. Well, at least it's classic compared to a lot of what's coming out these days.

The big problem with this disk is the production. I believe a great beat can save a bad MC, but a so-so beat cannot save a great MC, and that's the case here on 'What it is,' 'Gun Draws,' 'Hold On,' and 'Trilogy.' I haven't heard much from Mr. Porter before (Only 'Around the World' on Game's Doctor's Advocate album, which also wasn't that great), but after learning he learned under J Dilla and Dr. Dre, his work's really disappointing here.

Enough with that negative ish, you gotta love the intro to the album, a slave song that compliments many of the issues PM talks about on this CD. This naturally leads into 'Free,' which is as hard as any song released this year. Then The Alchemist produces 'Desire,' an incredibly soulful song that's probably the best on the album. A great beat compliments 'Push,' but as another reviewer commented it's not long enough. 'Welcome to the Terrodome' is a cover of the Public Enemy classic with a political introduction by Chuck D himself. It's as good as always, and Pharoah adds a bit of his own flavor here. 'Let's Go' is pretty good, a more laid back track compared to some of the other songs here. 'Body Baby' has the best beat and hook on the record, further proving that blues and hip hop mix rather nicely. 'Bar Tap' has a decent beat from one of my favorite producers at the moment, Black Milk (go cop his CD too, while you're at it), and it's also pretty funny. I love Erykah Badu, but she can only do so much for the boring 'Hold On,' but it's immediately redeemed by 'So Good,' one of the best pre-sex hip hop tracks of all time. Try playing this during a romantic night and see if clothes DON'T come off. Finally, 'Trilogy' does get better as the track progresses, so skipping ahead makes this an ok track.

But you gotta get the Best Buy version, which has the excellent 'Book of Judges.' This is what 'Gun Draws' should have been, it's angrier, more controversial and fresher. With this version, PM has just released the hip hop album of the year so far, though it could be replaced shortly by Common, Kanye West and Chamillionaire.

2 out of 5 stars Not up to Monch standards.......2007-07-23

In the barren wasteland of the current hip hop desert, one tends to look at anything that doesn't sound exactly the same as the mainstream trash as something better than it truly is. If this album were released in 1994-2000, it would be considered in Pharoahe Monch's minor works. Surely we wouldn't place it with his seminal masterpiece Stress: The Extinction Agenda, or even the now defunct solo record Internal Affairs. This album has way too much sugary r & b hooks throughout, this from the same guy who posited "Why do you choose to listen to R & B?" Gun Talks is a standout cut, but haven't true Organized Konfusion fans already been down this road with Stray Bullet?
Pharoahe's skills on the mic are always going to be at the top of the game, the production and lack of subject matter needs to catch up. Mediocre and redundant.

5 out of 5 stars 8 years later, Pharoahe Monch does it again.......2007-07-20

I remember Pharoahe Monch from Organized Konfusion, but to be honest with you other than "Fudge Pudge" with O.C. and (Crush, Kill, Destroy) "Stress" I couldn't tell you too much about them. I was blinded by A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Gang Starr, EPMD, and several others from those days, so I didn't get around into knowing too much about Organized Konfusion. In 1999, I definitely had to start paying attention to Pharoahe Monch once I heard "Simon Says". It was hard for me to believe that Pharoahe could produce a track that was so tight and have the lyrics to back them up. Internal Affairs was definitely a nice, versatile CD. You had a little bit of everything on this CD. My favorite track was the "Simon Says (Remix)" because of the dope Redman verse but you still had classic tracks like the MOP featured "No Mercy", "The Next S____" featuring Busta Rhymes, "The Truth" w/Common and Talib Kweli, "Queens" and "Behind Closed Doors".

I figured that Pharoahe would wait a couple of years and then release another CD but I never figured that there would be 8 years inbetween releases. He attempted to hold us over with tracks like "The Life" w/Styles P., "Guerilla Monsoon Rap" w/Black Thought and Talib Kweli from Talib's "Quality" CD and "Oh No" which featured Mos Def & Nate Dogg from the Lyricist Lounge Volume 2 CD.

One of my boys from high school called me and told me that Pharoahe Monch was releasing another CD and I honestly didn't believe him. Finally, I realized that "Desire" would be droppin' soon. The "Intro" sets the tone for the first part of the CD. Once you hear the beat for "Free" start blaring out of the stereo, you almost forget that it was 8 years between releases. Pharoahe drops some knowledge for people who haven't heard a CD displaying an actual message since Common's "Be" CD. Pharoahe mixes in his actual MC skills while spreading knowledge at the same time and that's actually a good thing. The Alchemist stops by to produce my favorite track on this CD and that is the title track. "Desire" has a nice beat to it but Pharoahe's lyrics are what you will want to focus on this time around. They will make you forget about the beat altogether, as well as, Showtyme sounding like K-Ci, during his sober days, on the track. Once you hear the beat to "Push" you'll wish the track was alot longer. Pharoahe starts the track trying to harmonize but he does his best when he raps his verse at the end of the track. Showtyme, Mela Machinko & the horns from Tower Of Power all add a nice flavor to the track. This is definitely one of the best beats on the CD. "Welcome To The Terrordome" is a remake of the Public Enemy track that was featured on "Fear Of A Black Planet". Chuck D even starts the track with a spoken word intro and Pharoahe Monch adds his own flavor to the track with some new lines to the song on Verse 2 of the song. "What It Is" has Pharoahe Monch simply displaying his MC skills. The track actually sounds like a freestyle and T. Jamerson gives Pharoahe a nice beat as well. Just like the track "Push", you'll have yourself wishing that the track was alot longer that it ends up being. "When The Gun Draws" is produced by Denaun Porter from D12 and from what I understand it is a sequel to the Organized Konfusion track "Stray Bullet". Some people may see the track as being controversial but all I see is a MC who is simply telling it like it is. People have been at the candy shop for so long buying a "drank", that anytime someone makes a song that you actually have to think about, then some people act like a crime has been commited. That's a shame. "Let's Go" is a pretty good track especially because of Pharoahe Monch's lyrics. My only disappointment is that the beat sounds just like "Safe To Say (The Incredible)" from Fat Joe's "All Or Nothing" CD. "Body Baby" is clearly a track made to be a single for "Desire". It might not catch you the first time you listen to it, but the more you listen to the track, the more it will grow on you. Most people will find the track a nice change of pace to the serious tone that is on the majority of the CD. "Bar Tap" might be the worst track on this CD. However, 1 bad track on a 13 track CD is definitely not a problem compared to some of these rap CDs that have been coming out lately. "Hold On" features Erykah Badu and the track has Pharoahe spreading positive messages throughout the song. "So Good" is Pharoahe's dedication to the ladies as he attempts to get grown and sexy over a nice midtempo track. "Trilogy" ends up being a 3 part track where Pharoahe describes a situation where a man has found that his wife has cheated with his best friend and he finds the 2 of them together. The 3 part track ends up being over 9 minutes and adds different perspectives of what the man in question would be thinking after seeing the 2 of them together and the actions that follow afterwards. Dwele adds some smooth vocals and horns to the 2nd part of the Trilogy and this track should definitely end up being one of your favorites on "Desire".

Overall, once you listen to "Desire" a couple of times, you'll scratch your head wondering why Pharoahe Monch waited 8 years before he dropped another CD. With the way hip hop is going nowadays we need more CDs that you can actually listen to and learn something from. If you're a fan of any of Pharoahe Monch's past work with Organized Konfusion or "Internal Affairs", then you should also pick up "Desire".

But it's thrilling how Tedeschi applies her gospel-trained vocalizing to these 12 numbers, all tales of hope and desire, delivered at an unhurried pace so the delicate filigrees of her phrasing make them resonate with absolute emotional conviction. Since discovering Susan Tedeschi I am absolutely hooked....her voice is like Bonnie Raitt on steroids!! Her voice is rough, but not forced, very sincere and natural. This album covers so many great songs it's hard to pick a favorite, but I'd have to say her Stones cover of "You Got the Silver" is amazing. "Share Your Love", an Aretha Franklin cover, is phenomenal as well; actually, there's not a bad song on this cd. Buy it - you won't be disappointed!

Susan Tedeschi puts her hubby Derek Trucks to shame! Her voice is fabulous. Although, I prefer her "Live in Austin", this one is great as well...she covers "I got the silver" impeccably. She is awesome!

I'm an avid Susan Tedeschi fan, so I was pleased by this CD. I've seen Ms. Tedeschi perform live and will be seeing her and her husband (Derek Trucks) next month so this album is part of my "preparations" for the concert :-)
I love her phrasing when she sings, I love the choice of material on this CD, and her obvious love for the blues genre. I never thought any current female singer could love and promote the blues as well as Bonnie Raitt until Susan came along. Now the blues has two of the most beautiful female voices in the music industry converting new listeners to their music. AND they can both play like the dickens!!
Keep the blues alive ladies!

I'm serious, someone shove JH out from behind the mixing console before he mangles another CD!!

For the record, I own and enjoy most of Joe's CDs and all of Susan's CDs . But the production here is just strange, with lots of instruments in mono panned hard right or left, and almost every track has the trailing sound of some instrument (usually organ) dragging on for too long before the fadeout - gaaa!!

But my biggest disappointment with this CD: this a CD by a blues guitarist upon which said guitarist doesn't play! What (TF) were they thinking? Susan: girl, you play fine, don't listen to those pinheads who say you can't. I saw you live last year and was totally blown away by your playing and singing!

p.s. Joe H. also helped to ruin the latest CD from Aimee Mann (The Forgotten Arm) with his shenanigans.

In my opinion, this CD is missing a bit of the raw Tedeschi bluesiness that I love so dearly, but I hate to be critical of such a superbly talented woman!

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Bob Dylan's "Desire" is not a record album. It is an audio storybook. The images created resonate with such brilliance they don't dissipate when the music ends, they shine brighter.

The opening track "Hurricane" places you at the scene of the bar where professional fighter Rubin "Hurricane Carter" was accused and found guilty of a crime that is still talked about today. Dylan thinks justice wasn't served and gives you a history lesson in one of the most powerful and riveting compositions ever penned.

"Mozambique" is exquisite as Dylan shares his thoughts on the beauty of a nation located in southern Africa. His descriptive phrases make you feel as you visited the continent along with him.

Dylan songs don't need continuity to flow. He is a master at taking us to the opposite edges of the planet from tune to tune. "Joey" ends (the song about the life of a mobster) and we are transported to South America for "Romance In Durango."

"Sara" pays homage to his ex-wife. His heart is not only on his sleeve but you feel the blood dripping from the wound.


All along the journey Emmylou Harris is superlative with background vocals and Scarlet Rivera's violin could bring tears to a clown.
The period of "Blood On The Tracks" and "Desire" could never have enough accolades, so we'll call it "Positively Dylan" and play the CD for the 456th time.

On this album, perhaps more than any other, Dylan shows off his true power as a storyteller. This album is more or less a collection of stories, each one incredibly rich, vivid, and imaginative. The songs on this album could each be made into a movie, and this cinematic quality is how these songs play out in your mind as you listen to them. Dylan uses such incredible and detailed imagery that you really feel like you are in these beautiful and sometimes haunting scenes that he is describing.

Highly recommended!

This album by Bob Dylan was released in late 1975. Most of the songs were co-written by Dylan and Jacques Levy. The most famous song on the album is "Hurricane", about boxer Rubin Carter, who was convicted of murder "which he never done", according to the song. It's a great song, and there are some other great ones, like "Isis" and "Sara" (which is about Dylan's first wife, and is often interpreted as a plea to save their marriage, which didn't prevent them from getting divorced). Overall, a very good album, but I wouldn't rank it among Dylan's very best.

I didn't used to be much of a fan of Desire--I found it overrated with several weak tracks and I thought Emmylou Harris' background vocals were often harsh and annoying. I still feel this way, but I've come to appreciate the album a lot more and understand why so many people think it's one of Dylan's best. After giving it a few more listens, I really enjoy the stylistic diversity that the songs range over (perhaps to Dylan's collaboration with Jacques Levy on most of the songwriting) as well as Dylan's energy in delivering the tunes. I'd recommend it to anybody who's already got Dylan's greatest 60's material and Blood on the Tracks and New Morning as the last high-quality studio he put out in the 70's.

The album kicks off with the classic "Hurricane." Dylan energetically spits out the ironies of Carter's story over Scarlet Rivera's violin (which will remain throughout the album as a great addition to his sound). From there on out, the album covers a lot of lyrical and stylistic territory, form the rocking narrative of "Isis" to the world music flavor of "Romance in Durango," to the dark mystery of "One More Cup of Coffee" (one of the album's best tracks). Another highlight is Dylan's emotional tribute to his soon-to-be-ex wife, "Sara."

Like I said before, the album's weaknesses are a couple songs that either drag too much or sound A LOT like other songs on the album, and the outright mediocrity of "Joey," mainly boring and way too long for its own good. Emmylou Harris sounds pretty good on a couple songs, but I think she appears on too many, and eventually her voice gets a little grating and annoying--I think Dylan would have sound pretty good all by himself. I'd also like to note that many of the best songs from Desire are on The Bootleg Series: Live 1975, The Rolling Thunder Revue. On this live album, they sound even better than on this recording, with more energy from Dylan and his live band. They're both worth owning, though.

I've definitely softened to Desire, and though I don't think it ranks at the top of Dylan's masterpieces, I think it's a really enjoyable listen with a ton of great things going for it. Hope you enjoy!

I'm not sure what the "Other Hits" metioned in the title of this CD are as no other tracks on it showcase Renee Diggs' awesome vocal talent better than "Object of My Desire." I still think of Teena Marie when I hear it.

I have been trying to get this on CD for quite a while; I think that Renee Diggs was one of the most powerful female vocalists of our time, who unfortunately didn't get the chance to prove it. My favorite songs on the CD are "The More We Love" and "Am I Still The One?" I recommend this cd to any and everyone who loves the 80's!

From its short, choral intro through the plodding opening cadence of its first proper song, "Free," Desire clearly shouts out Pharoahe Monch's topical preoccupation with freedom. The track progresses predictably enough, dropping references to Harriet Tubman and emancipation with the recognizable delivery Monch's been developing since he entered the scene with Prince Poetry (on the eponymous Organized Konfusion) in 1991. Borrowing from Public Enemy, the criminally under-sampled Millie Jackson, and others, Monch's rotating stable of producers supports his lyrical workouts with compelling variety. "Push" and the nine-and-a-half-minute closer, "Trilogy," feature stacked and wandering horn lines, respectively. "What Is It" omits the beats for a hissed chorus out of far left field. "Body Baby" bounces along on hand-claps and finger-snaps like a contemporary Will Smith cut. Erykah Badu adds oohs n' aahs and a lovely chorus to the feel-good message of "Hold On," the album's most radio-ready song. Elsewhere, a few forgettable fillers--"Bar Tap," "So Good"--stud the latter half of Desire, but after the eight years of singles and guest verses since his solo debut, Internal Affairs, these 13 songs combine for a welcome return to the Pharoahe Monch catalogue. --Jason Kirk

Good CD, not a masterpiece as stated my many but much better than what I thought when I first listened to it. I think that Trilogy was ruined by the guy who was singing, that guys voice is horrible, almost as bad as Bilal's.

First half of the album is great, 2nd half is sorry R&B garbage. I am pretty dissapointed, since I was really anticipating this album. Also seems like Pharoahe really shortened up his verses, many song are extremely chorus heavy. Pick up the mix CD instead, titled Pharoahe Monch - The Awaikening.

Pharoah Monch has always been a lyrical MC since his days with the highly slept on group Organized Konfusion. After an 8 year hiatus Pharoah comes back with an intelligent and creative album with advanced word play and great production to match. Desire is the best hip hop album of 2007 as of June and could stand the test of time throughout the year unless Common, Kanye or Talib Kweli can knock him off the throne. The track "Trilogy" and the title track "Desire" is enough for you to purchase the CD alone...Peace

Each of Harvey's previous albums has been a distinct affair as she took steps forward in not only forging her sound but also exploring the wealthy veins of rock & roll. So on first listen, Is This Desire? almost disappoints; it's very close to the same dark, woozy, and bluesy musical territory she staked out on To Bring You My Love. But it's been said that though good stories can be read once, great stories must be read twice, and, like great literature, this album deserves repeated listenings to appreciate its beautiful complexities and subtle shadings. It is hard to claim for a PJ Harvey album as her best, because every album of hers is such a classic! Is This Desire includes some of her most melancholic and darkest songs yet such as the classics "The River", "Angelene" and "Catherine". I believe this album carries her "To Bring You My Love" album one step forward.Because her vocals are much more clear and comfortable. Melodies of songs are more experimental. However, they really catch the listener easily. Even the darkest "Electric Light", "Catherine" and "My Beatuiful Leah" can be your personal favorite from the very first listening. Try this album if you want to hear from one of the most talented female musicians of the last two decades.

Allow me to introduce you to one of my favorite albums EVER:

If you were to poll PJ fans, this will NOT rank as favorite with most of them. However this is my favorite of hers for so many reasons I will try and explain. At this point in her carreer, she had 4 albums under her belt and her fans were accustomed to experiencing a very brash rocker chick. This album is a clear departure of the woman her fans had come to know.

They had become accustomed to this mad operatic diva shrieking and moaning her pain so when many heard this toned down vision, they thought she had lost her strength. But no, she FOUND her strength. In her subtelty she lays claim to power and becomes a whole new artist. Many were also lost on the electronic nature of this album but that only added to her invention. This album is a marvelous blend of electronic elements and organic instruments. Skin to the muscle, blood to the veins. Intimately connected.....

And the search begins..... This song to me, sounds like a hymn, but more like a lost spiritual than anything you'd hear in a regular church. That's how much of this album feels to me, like lost spirituals. The kind that you'd only hear in a place where there was no pomp and no tradition, just the open wounds of those in search of healing bleeding until they either have no blood left or have been completely healed. A friend of mine characterizes this album as "haunted" and I feel that is really perfect description.

The album is very focused on female characters.....Angeline, Leah, Elise, Catherine, Joy, Dawn....... And word has it that many of these are literary characters which stories have been written about. However, I will never read any of the stories these characters are based on for I would ruin the truth I have created in my heart.

OMG! Amazing what can happen in less than 2 minutes..... My mind's sky turns to fire when I hear this song......and I become lighter than I've ever been. By the time this song is over, your sky will be on fire too.....

Cold desperation....... Sadly, this reminds me of my cousin Lisa who was murdered in March :cry: She was always searching for something in her life, even searching unto her death. When Gangsta calls this haunted, I can't think of a more perfect song to really characterize that feeling. I included this on a mix disc that focuses on social ills, anguish and pain. This song was just perfect for that mix.

Here is Catherine's reintroduction. You get your first glimpse of her at her chapel high up on the windy hill. And now you know what conclusion she's come to.....

electric........light. The initial sublelty of this song is belied by the entire universe that lies within. Listen carefully and you will hear that there is a whole world going on underneath the surface....





One of the most famous stories ever told is the act of humanity's genesis. Imagine the perfection of that day. God taking dirt and forming a man, taking a rib and fashioning a mate for him. A New Earth, pure skies, crisp clean air, warm sunshine washing the skin with its golden rays. Every day after became more perfect than the day before and this was the most perfect of all days. And then.........

"He was walking in the garden
and he was walking in the night
and he was singing a sad love song
and he was praying for his life"

Adam sensed something was very wrong for it had never turned so dark so quickly and so early, neither had it been so cold. Searching the garden, he noticed Eve standing at the foot of the Tree of Knowledge in discourse between the highest powers. Adam saw the flaming eye of God's wrath focused on the cool slick veil of smoke that surrounded Eve and there enveloped in the shroud of Satan's lie stood Eve with a half eaten fruit. Remembering the commandment to never eat of the Tree of Knowledge, in fear he ran......




"and the stars came out around him
he was thinking of his sins
and he's looking at his song-bird
and he's looking at his wings"

Having not come to Eve's defense, Adam's guilt bore down on him like a thousand crimes. Grieving over the knowledge he would never see his Eve again, he went in search of the one thing he knew would bring him comfort........his song-bird. Adam's earliest days in the garden had him searching for this creature. Just one of many of God's creations, this one made the most beautiful music of all. However, of all the times Adam heard the bird's majestic symphonies, he was never able to spot it. Having never seen his songbird before Adam stood in shock and awe as he stood looking at his mirror image. The song-bird was not a bird, but a man.....





"there inside the garden
came another with his lips
said, 'Won't you come and be my lover?'
'Let me give you a little kiss'
and he came, knelt down before him
and fell upon his knees
'I will give you gold and mountains
if you stay awhile with me'"

The first words of his creator upon his waking moments rang clear in his memory.....For I have fashioned a mate for you..... and Adam realized that God had given him a CHOICE. God created Adam 2 mates and now the choice was there before Adam, but which one was right? Should he stay with his song-bird? Should he validate Eve's disobedience to their creator? Adam's heart surged and swelled and, he got down on his knees and pled for the love of his bird. Adam promised him everything the Lord had created on his earth, if he stayed with him.



"and there was trouble taking place, trouble taking place......."

As Adam pled with his song-bird, Eve was being banished from the garden......



"there inside the garden
They kissed, and the sun rose
and he walked a little further
and he found he wasn't alone"

Having just been lost in the comfort of his lovers arms, Adam's stopped dead in his tracks as he noticed the jealous and rage filled glare of a woman he used to know named Eve.



"and the wind, it gathered round him
he was thinking of his sins
And he's looking for his song-bird
He was looking for his wings

and there was trouble........taking place. Trouble, taking place"

In Scorn, the wind of Eve's rage whirled around them. In her short time on the earth she had been betrayed by the snake, her creator and her mate. In shame, Adam could barely meet her gaze. Remembering how he ran in fear instead of standing in solidarity with his charge, the burden of guilt was too much and Adam cried hot bitter tears, facing an impossible decision.

Which mate should he choose? Should he choose the path Eve has taken and become banished from his paradise forever? Does he leave the loving arms of his song-bird never to see him again? How to make up for the fact that he left Eve alone when she needed him the most? Eve walked over to Adam as the Song-bird tearfully looked on from afar. Eve stretched out her arm and opened her hand and in it was the half eaten fruit.

Perhaps Eve's sin wasn't the only betrayal that day......

PJ is famously known for singing about cutting off her lovers legs so he cannot run away :lol: And one of the really intriguing things about her as an artist is that she gives voice to the things that many cannot find the courage or the ability to speak. She is able to sing and play her feelings in the way that many of us wish we could but simply aren't able. I feel that is the kind of purpose she was made to serve. I think this is really the first time you get a glimpse of the PJ that strives for cleansing and healing. I feel that this is the first peak at the evolved person she is to become......







"In came the girl with the saddened eyes
And asked him over again and again
"Was I too weak ? Was I a child ?
And can't we leave here and start again ?"

Said "I don't mind if you take me down"
And "I don't mind if you break it all"
But "how much more can you take from me?"

He drove it fast to make the night

This is probably the primest example of how excellently fused the electronic and natural are. Anyone who feels that they miss the old PJ and therefore neglect this album, can feast on this song because aside from Sky Lit Up, it's singly THE performance that characterizes the PJ that people claim is missing from this album....






Mary and Joseph went on and on..... The Sun went down. It was getting cold. They saw fire....

That question can be asked many many times over during this 40 minute spell. 8 years after it's release, this album continues to remain a mystery to me. That is one of the things about it that I love so much.

I am a newcomer to the wonder that is PJ Harvey, having been a fan of Nick Cave for a while, and hearing her vocals on Murder Ballads, i just had to check her out. This is the second album i bought of hers, and my favourite of the two i own. My first remark is that this is a woman not afraid to really sing, and i mean it. In many respects though quite a feminine voice, she sings in a very masculine way, which adds to her charm. The album itself is a mix of solemn ballads and quite jumpy dance techo themes (i dunno if that's the right term). My favourite of them is probably A perfect Day Elise, in many ways reminiscent of Cave's songwriting style. All in all, a difficult one to get into but good for fans

5 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness for PJ Harvey!.......2006-05-31

IS THIS DESIRE? is PJ Harvey's fourth studio album and by now I've learned to expect the unexpected, especially after such distinct varying styles of each of her previous records. My expectations were pretty high though, cos TO BRING YOU MY LOVE was such an epic of an album that I didn't think she could top its grandeur but I'm glad to say this album is just as good, if not better than the latter.

Whereas TBYML was blues infused, ITD? has got a heavy dose of electronica to it. It is her most intriguing, most melodic and deepest record to date. She's always been an excellent storyteller but her style of writing is beyond comparison here. All the songs are written, arranged and sung like short stories with a lot of literary references, borrowing from (I imagine) some of her favorite writers thus glorifying each heroine's names, allowing Polly to try on different personas but never feeling trapped in any one. It is most difficult to find words to describe this record, but I read one eloquent reviewer described it as "incandescent in its loveliness" and I couldn't agree more. Lush with aching emotion and dripping with etherealness, ITD? moves away from the theatrics of TBYML to grace us with this bewitching of a masterpiece.

The sultry first track "Angelene" really tears at your heart, setting the mood for the rest of the album. It is about a prostitute who ponders what could've been and longs to but is terrified of starting a different way of life. The lines "Rose is my color, and white. Pretty mouth, Green my eyes" is almost directly quoted from a short story by JD Salinger.

"The Sky Lit Up" to me is a very happy upbeat danceable song. It is about finding inspiration in oneself. A friend was saying it's actually a sinister kind of song but I don't care. It makes me feel like everyday is my birthday and all I want to do is dance and celebrate me.

"The Wind" is epic. I don't know how else to describe this magnificent song. It's told like a book, with the instruments being arranged to create a "windy" kind of atmosphere for that added, almost surreal feel. Starts with a whispering narrator introducing us to a woman named Catherine who we learn was once the life of the party but is now an outcast. Lonely and alone, she turns to the wind for solace.

"My Beautiful Leah" is a bit reminisce of RID OF ME. It is very dark and disturbing, from the heavy vibe of the synthesizers to Polly's deep vocals to the lyrical content, it is an evil of a song. The last line indicates a lot: "It never leaves my mind, the last words she said, if I don't find it this time, then I'm better off dead."

At first listen "A Perfect Day Elise" sounds like "The Sky Lit Up" in that the beat is very light and happy, with the chorus seemingly very uplifting, "It's a perfect day, a perfect day, Elise!" But upon learning the lyrics I realized this is quite the sinister song. It tells the tale of sex, rejection, obsession and ultimately ends with the murder of Elise, shot down by her lover Joe. So imagine the raised hair when realizing what I thought to be an "uplifting" chorus actually belies doom: today's a perfect day, Elise, a perfect day... to die. "God is a sweat dripping down his back, the water soaked her blonde hair black." The title was inspired by another short story by JD Salinger called "A Perfect Day For Bananafish."

My favorite song off the record is "Catherine." This is the most alluring, most hypnotic song I've ever heard. It is a song about extreme jealousy and intense hatred brought on by unrequited love. I think PJ took inspiration from Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights here, in style of writing and in theme. In the song PJ curses Catherine Debarra, "Until the light shines on me, I damn to hell every second you breathe" almost in the same manner as Heathcliff cursing Catherine in the book, "And I pray one prayer, I repeat it till my tongue stiffens-- Catherine Earnshaw, may you not rest, as long as I am living!"

"Electric Light" is very strange, heavy in rhythm but spare sounding. I know that didn't make sense but if you heard it you'll know. I must admit this is my least favorite track on the album but I think it's mostly cos I don't really get it.

"The Garden" is lushly beautiful. I'm not sure if it's the title but I can't help but think of Adam and Eve and conjure all the brilliance of the stars and Gods when I hear this song. As with most of the songs on the record, the melodic use of instruments is juxtaposed with very dark, very foreboding lyrics. I hear this one is about some kind of sodomy. Yikes.

"Joy" has got to be the darkest, most heartbreaking song ever. Geez, even thinking about this song makes me sad. I can't help but pull for poor ol' Joy. After all, she lives "a live unwed, thirty years old, never danced a step." It's a song of self-pity I think, and very harsh, about a woman named "Joy" but never had a taste of it in her life. "I've been believing in nothing since I was born, it was never a question." Sigh. Poor Joy.

The song that moves me most is "The River." It's like a dream to me, this song. It makes me feel right with the world, if just for five minutes. It's a song about evolution, I think, and of humanity. Lovely, lovely song.

"No Girl So Sweet" is awesome! Fast and intense, I think this is Joy's sister song. Only Joy's sister is the total opposite of Joy. Imagine Joy but wilder. Joy's sister is named Rage. She is the talking-back, staying up all night and gettin' into trouble kinda gal. The building of the music and intensity of Polly's voice towards the end of the song is electrifying.

The album ends with the title track, "Is This Desire?" I love that we get to hear Polly's voice crystal clear here because she is quite a singer but she doesn't necessarily showcase that in a lot of her songs. My heart melts when I hear her croon, "Is this desire enough to lift us higher, to lift above?"

So? After all that's said, is it desire? For me, you bet it is. It may even be true love.

Is This Desire? by P.J. Harvey is such a haunting and strange album. I like it though because the songs are not silly or pretentious, Harvey never tries to be somebody she is not. She is a real artist who likes doing her own thing and I respect that. Standout tracks include: The Sky lit up, The Wind, The River, No girl so sweet, Catherine, A perfect day Elise, and my personal fave, Angelene. That song is so good, "I've seen men come and go but there will be one to collect my soul and come to me, 2 thousand miles away, he walks upon the coast, 2 thousand miles away it lays open like a road..." The River is sweetly mellow and sad, "Two silent birds circled by like our pain in the river..." But unfortantely some of the tracks are less than average, but Is This Desire? is a great album just not one of my all-time favorites, I prefer Dry and Stories from the city, stories from the sea. If you are just discovering P.J. Harvey then I recommend all her albums to see which one is your favorite. Enjoy!

This is one of those incredibly under-appreciated albums that shows that true art and poetry are still being created. Suzanne proves that love songs can be incredibly mysterious with the use of strange settings and metaphors. "Honeymoon Suite" has a haunting tone, which is so rare in more recent pop music. "World Before Columbus" is my personal favorite (and one of my all-time favorite songs). With wonderful metaphors, it deals with everything from world history and greed to love and a desire to live and feel more deeply.

Other passages delve into fears, darkness, and issues of mortality (e.g. "Birthday," "Headshots," and "Tombstone"). "Thin Man," I discovered, refers to the skeletal "figure of death" (i.e. the Grim Reaper) mentioned in the liner notes. The song is remarkably similar in imagery to Emily Dickinson's "Because I Could Not Stop for Death." These themes are balanced, though, by periodically upbeat and jazzy songs, some with racy overtones (e.g. "Caramel" and "Stockings.") As always, Mike Visceglia's base-playing and the other instrumentation are as good as it gets. It is difficult to imagine a more beautifully written and arranged single-disc album.

After 99.9F, which I consider her greatest CD, I wondered how Suzanne could pull off another spectacular record. She did it with this one. It's reminiscent of 99.9F, but not as industrial sounding. The rhythms here are a little more interesting and FINALLY we hear songs that are obviously about her own perspective (e.g., Birthday, Honeymoon Suite, World Before Columbus). Her lyrics on this one are no longer mysterious and open to multiple interpretations. There are a few missteps, however, and this album has the distinction of containing the only Suzanne Vega song I hate: Lolita. What was she thinking? Also, Casual Match has a decent verse, but the chorus is completely unaffecting. Otherwise, this is one great CD.

I love this CD! It's great when your relaxing at home with a cup of coffee. I'm only nineteen and I don't usually listen to this type of music. It's very easy listening. Caramel is my favorite and probably the only one I've really listened too, but I can let the CD just play while I'm at home and every song is nice.

This was Suzanne Vega's second album produced by Mitchell Froom. There is a great variation in moods and styles and Froom obviously has a great skill of giving Vega's songs inventive arrangements without ruining them with over-production.

This album is a natural follow-up the very experimental album "99.9 F" which had a lot of odd sounds and rhythms. You find quite a lot of the same things here, but the overall impression is that of a softer and more refined album.

What make Suzanne Vega's albums so good is the songs and her soft voice; what makes her albums great is the perfectionism in which the songs are arranged and produced. Both elements are present on this album, which may very well turn out to be her most satisfying and enduring.

A handful of these songs would have fitted nicely into "99.9 F"; "Birthday", "Stockings", "Casual Match", "No Cheap Thrill" and "Lolita" . Among them my favourites are "Stockings", with great sensual lyrics, "No Cheap Thrill" and the almost heavy "Birthday".

On other tracks a more refined touch is apparent. "Caramel" is a latin-inspired great tune with a tasteful hornarrangement. "My favourite Plum" is another memorable song with a beautiful string arrangement. "World Before Columbus" are "Honeymoon Suite" two acoustic songs with Vega playing the guitar. I particularly like the thought-provoking lyrics of "Honeymoon Suite".

"Headshots" is another favourite.

Least appealing are the jazzy track "Tombstone" and the riff-based "Casual Match" and "Lolita"

    This album contains some of Rachmaninoff's most beautiful and romantic music which should appeal to everyone, even if you're not a classical music fan. The performances are first rate and you may even shed a few tears listening to this very emotional music.     If you are a Rachmaninov fan, this CD is a must. Of all the CD's I have of Rachmaninov, this is my favorite. The orchestra's that perform capture the essence of what he composed. It is a beautiful CD guaranteed to please. As the back of the CD states, "Rachmaninov and romance go together like Romeo and Juliet"

    I purchased this CD primarily for Trac#2--Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini-18th Variation. I wasn't disapointed! The whole cd is very relaxing and definitly puts you in the mood. I thought the cd would contain only piano music but there are many well-orchestrated and dramatic tracs.

    Back in '85, at age 15, even then I knew this was hot stuff ! To this day this awesome collection of synthesized-dance, electro- funk tracks and soulful seductive ballads was one of the best albums this duo produced. In fact it was their last effort together both as a team and for the Mercury label...

    Simply hypnotic and the kind of tunes that will stay in your head (for all the good reasons of course)! I still play this cd to this day and especially during the summer...Anyone who owns/owned this title on cassette and then the re-mastered cd will realize that a few tracks have been "instrumentally and musically enhanced"(re-mixed,re-engineered ?) or are alternates than what was on the cassette. Then, the cd offers a greater nostalgic value by also including the out of print extended or dance re-mixes...the cassette versions were a little more bland. Still, this is one of my all time favorite R&B titles from the 80's. A definite must-keep...

    After all these years A Street Called Desire still holds its own pretty well !

    Although the album has its fair share of filler( the awfull crash bang electro funk of Drive my love and Who's foolin' who conjure up memories of the very worst of the 8o's)there are the hits which sound even better 15 years later but the lp's only real talking point is the divine Your smile; deep passionate and very very soulful. Some of the notes Angela Winbush hits are not in the book.At least two of these 4 stars is for Your smile, it's that good!
