4 out of 5 stars Delerium - 'Spheres' (Cleopatra).......2005-06-08

What drew me to this CD was the track "Dark Matter" that I first heard on the various artists 'Space Daze' 2-CD(see my review). This is the ONLY Delerium disc I have.I consider this project that includes players Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber to be 'dark ambient'.Key tunes are the twelve-minute "Colony","Cloud Barrier" and the previously mentioned "Dark Matter"(disc's best cut).Might appeal to fans of Front Line Assembly,Dead Can Dance,Breathless and Front 242.Give it a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Early Delerium at their best.......2005-02-20

This is Delerium at its best. Ambient, sometimes dark beats fused with industrialised gregorian chants make this album a must for any hardcore Delerium fan. There are 6 tracks on the first volume all over 5 mins in lenth. It is a album that is probably meant for 100 years in the future. Leeb and Fulber got the mix right and the CD cover is perfect, the back showing our moon and the front Saturn and its splendid rings.

Any of these tracks would feature rightly so on any sci fic movie, they have a dark ambience about them. This album was released after Morpheus in 1994 and showed Delerium moving onwards from its early developement stage into its mature stage where the Spheres proves that with age the music of delerium is universal.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent disc!.......2004-05-20

This is Delerium for those who are worried about buying something too structured. Excellent CD, but only for fans of ambient and ethereal...fans of Karma, Poem, and Chimera may be disappointed. But buy it anyway! Expand your horizons!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent ambient disc........2004-03-01

This is my favorite Delerium album. It's by far the most spacey and minimalist. I almost didn't give it a fair shake because the samples of HAL from 2001 in the beginning of the first track are so obvious and silly that they make me laugh, but the other five tracks are really top-notch stuff, especially track 6 which is a very beautiful ambient piece a la Brian Eno's "Apollo" or early Tangerine Dream (but with better production). "Spheres" is not at all like later Delerium releases - e.g. Semantic Spaces, Karma, Poem, etc., when they got more danceable and added the female vocalist(s). Those more dancey albums aren't my bag - I hate the vocals and the tame, predictable beats don't do much for me. Chances are, if you like those later albums a lot, you probably won't like this.

5 out of 5 stars A real trip.......2002-11-14

This spacey, trippy, album is excellent background music. I love to listen to it while I'm working and don't want to be distracted by lyrics. It's ambient, trance, and hypnotic - the sort of noise I sway rather than dance to. I especially love the little snippets of choral chant. It's all a bit creapy in a good way.

5 out of 5 stars The Joy of Hindemith!.......2006-03-09

I must confess a significant partiality to the music of Paul Hindemith, composer of modern music. There is not much like him in the classical realm, maybe Hovhaness or, on ocassion, Richard Strauss -- just a tad of Holst. The thing with Hindemith is, the music is incredibly busy and he used everything up to and including a tire tool beating on a metal trash can lid if it actually improved his compositions.

The first three tracks are a bit of an Arabesque theme if you like that sort of thing - a unique mix of Russia and Persia punctuated with the compositional clarity of the old German Masters.

His music is not weird in any sense, in fact, quite the opposite -- it makes perfect melodic sense but it does build in sort of an electricly-excited ostinado. This CD in particular is sort of like a Berg Concerto that actually flows and rhymes.... if that makes any sense at all.

Another way to look at Hindemith's music on this CD is to frame it in your mind as a filmscore, particularly tracks 4 and 5. I don't know that it's ever been used for that purpose but I think that it would fit quite effectively into a quality early-60s action film. Perhaps, even into an Epic work.

The final third of the CD is a very fine symphony, written in 1951, "The Harmony of the Worlds," and the work incorporates all I said about the first two-thirds of the CD within it and then some -- truly a crescendo composition. This CD is pure Hindemith and would be a great first-pick if you were looking to pick up a CD that was representative of his finer, defining work.

Probably the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra isn't one of the top 5 orchestras of the planet and maybe Werner Andreas Albert (conductor) isn't the premier baton wielder either -- but you'd never know that having listened to this CD. The presentation is nothing short of spectacular and the sound is just great! It is a DDD recording, cut around 1989.

If you're a classical collector, you'll find this one to be a nice addition to what you already have. Incredibly entertaining!
