Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01
I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!
Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03
This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?
Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11
Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.
Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.
Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22
It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!
Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31
Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.
However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Success could be a possibility.......2006-07-20
Considering that pop-punk music has been on a steady decline in popularity since 2004, you just don't expect new bands to embrace the sound so whole heartedly. Stepping into 'this could be a possibility' is like traveling thru time, going all the way back to when NFG, allister and Blink were at the top of their game. While it's true that the 10 songs here go by much too fast for a full length, that shouldn't take away from the appeal. 'this could be a possibility' is worth every penny, even if it is only 28 minutes long. Fans of Drive Thru Records, Blink 182 and Green Day circa 2001 should get to know Valencia right away.
'Hit the lights' on 'Cartel' and send 'Fall out Boy' to an 'All Time Low' on your playlist, cuz Valencia is taking back the genre with style!
Just a damn good pop-punk CD.......2006-05-05
I've listenend/own countless pop-punk CDs and this one is pretty amazing... Pick this one up :->
Think: Old school NFG with a new twist!.......2006-04-12
When I finally gave this LP a good listen, I struggled to think of who this band sounded exactly like. Their melodies and vocals were clearly familiar and definitely not astranged from a lot of bands I was familiar with, but I struggled to find an artist who's sound was exactly on the same page as Valencia. Their songs are loud, aggressive, and reminiscent of bands like Cartel, A Small Victory, or anything on the Drive-Thru roster, but their genuine lyrics and energetic, blasting guitars are much louder and driving than any of those bands.
"The Space Between," initially starts and persists as a straight forward pop-punk jam, and I was always relatively bored with it--until I let the track slide till the end. The pleasant hook and layered vocal outro croons, "is it in me, to put the bottle down" with familiar vocal harmonies and melodies. And the same familiar draw is found in the track "The Closest I Am To Living Life On The Edge," with a brilliant shimmering breakdown and rampent guitars and vocals: "what's ordinary!!!" he sings. The band showcases a nice ability to finger-tap and go metal on "What Are You Doing Man? That's Weird!" and again on "How Will We Ever Know How?" with blasting, super high-energy guitars and dropping basslines. Truly, in this powerful track, the band finally hit me in the face, as they exposed their ability to play in familiar territory that was reminiscent and comforting.
Valencia aren't doing anything special. I won't pretend this is the first time I have heard a band like Valencia, but their brutal walls of guitars and ability to sing and croon like it's 2001 has a sense of redeeming value to it. I'd strongly recommend picking this up if you were into the early pop-punk scene, and fans of albums like "Take This To Your Grave" or "New Found Glory" will be strangely pleased with the pleasant ground this band is exploring. I'm excited to see their future endeavors, and as the band states, their reinvention of an old, appreciated art could be a possibility.
Theres Better Bands IN Killadelphia.......2006-02-19
The headline says it all , trust me i know. They arent bad but there is just as good
AMAZING.......2006-01-10
Like everyone on here says Valencia: The Next Big Thing... I know the scene is over run w/ pop punk nowadays, but these guys do it so well it doesn't matter!!!

In a career that's veered from '70s pop chanteuse to Broadway star and neo-operatic diva, Sarah Brightman has brought a critics-be-damned sense of dramatic scale to nearly every project she's tackled. As the title suggests, the tracks here are largely culled from her Songs That Got Away and Surrender song anthologies, although they do include four previously unreleased outtakes from those collections. Her 1998 recording of the title song from ex-husband Andrew Lloyd Webber's Whistle Down the Wind succeeds by emphasizing its melodic grace with a deft, airy touch, while the remainder rescue worthy songs from obscure or failed musicals. From Lerner and Lane's 1959 Carmelina comes the lovely "One More Walk Around the Garden." Stephen Sondheim's youthful 1954 debut, Saturday Night, yields a sprightly take on "What More Do I Need," while an operatic reading of "In the Mandarin's Orchid Garden," from the Gershwins' unproduced 1929 East Is West, is also included. If the selection leans a little too heavily on the Lloyd Webber connection elsewhere (including Italian versions of "Guardami (With One Look)" from Sunset Boulevard and "Piano (Memory)" from Cats delivered in her patently restraint-free soprano), they're only reminders that shrewdness has hardly been the least of Brightman's talents. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Classy,Romantic, And Stirring........2007-03-09
Encore is the perfect CD for those who love diversity. Classy, Romantic and Stirring. My two favorites are Piano and One More Walk Around The Garden.
Piano (Memory)is even more soul stirring in Italian than the english version. If the english version was perfection she improved upon it. One More Walk Around The Garden is sad and soul stirring bringing a tear to the eye on every play.Sarah sings her way through every song with the voice that earned her the title Angel of Music.Everyone a Gem. A must have for every true fan.
Lovely - Just Lovely!.......2007-01-04
Overall I was very pleased with the content and quality of this CD. Once again, Sarah sings beautifully. I rated this 4 stars instead of 5 simply because, like another reviewer, I, too, felt that it contained too much old material. I used to enjoy 'Memory' but it's been overdone to the point that I cringe when I hear it now. It's sung in Italian here and called 'Piano' but it's still 'Memory'.
I especially liked 'One More Walk Around the Garden' (Carmelina), 'There is More to Love' (Aspects of Love), 'The Last Man in My Life' (Song and Dance) and 'Chi Il Bel Sogno Di Doretta' (La Rondine). 'If I Ever Fall In Love Again' (The Crooked Mile) is especially well done as well.
I do enjoy playing the CD but I find that I pick the songs that I play rather than allowing it to play all the way through.
Encore!.......2005-05-29
The title of the CD is perfect. Sarah has a beautiful and flawless voice and her singing just pulls you in. If you like Sarah Brightman, this is a wonderful CD to add to your collection. I have only started to collect her CDs from concerts she has done and I love every single one of them! BUY THIS!! You won't regret it!!!
Captivating.......2004-12-25
Sarah Brightman sings beautifully. That's not even up for debate. Her choice of material is generally interesting as well. She runs through a wide variety of genre and regularly comes up with excellent pieces from each of them.
`Encore' is a compilation of material recorded between the late 1980's and 2001. It features strong renditions of `Away from You' by Rodgers and Harnick and `In the Mandarin's Garden' by George and Ira Gershwin. The orchestration on `If I ever Fall in Love Again' is a bit overblown but she sings the piece with sincerity, and very well. Her cover of Lane and Lerner's `One More Walk Around the Garden' is a thing of beauty. The same can be said for her handling of Sondheim's `What More Do I Need'. The weakest moment in the set comes during Puccini's `Chi Il Bel Di Doretta'. She sings it well but her voice doesn't quite have the pure power needed for the piece and there are moments where the strain shows.
Sarah Brightman really shines when she sings music written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Her voice takes on an extra richness. He wrote the music for nine of the fifteen cuts on this release and can be identified as the composer of each one just by the tone her voice takes on when she begins singing any one of them. It's softer, richer, more expressive- it's as if there's an extra facet in her voice and spirit just for his compositions. He produced this collection but I don't believe that was a factor. The same thing struck me when she performed the material from the Phantom of the Opera that appeared on her La Luna concert DVD. `Think of Me' as performed by her was the song that attracted me to her voice even when I was less than sure of the scope of her talent. The recording here is the recording from `Phantom' and it's still stunning. `Piano' is hauntingly beautiful. `The Last Man in My Life' is given a ravishing performance. `Half a Moment' is devastating. The list goes on. There's not a weak cut from among his material. Webber's songs stay with the listener. Their melodic are lush and rich and have enough scope and variety to remain interesting over a long period of time. His orchestration is sumptuous, elaborately textured and a little sweet in the way that touches the listener as a caress. When she sings them they become all they can be. This isn't his music or hers. It's their music.
This is an excellent collection because of the way it showcases this. The material here has been (unkindly) labelled as `ear worms'. To an extent the term is accurate. Show tunes do lean toward catchy and easily accessible melodic lines. Their lyrics are often shallow. What's presented on this collection has more than its share of all of these faults. It's impossible to be cynical about it though. These songs, particularly the numbers penned by Lloyd-Webber, are strong on their own. When they're performed this well, and with this amount of affection, they're captivating. The quality of the sound on the release compliments the material beautifully. It's rich, lush and always crystal clear. Sarah Brightman herself is always a pleasure to listen to. Her voice it has a sparkling quality that's radiantly beautiful. The material on this collection shows that beauty to its fullest.
Listen to her singing these songs and let them wash over you. It's the perfect antidote for cynicism.
Sarah Brightman's Best.......2004-02-17
When I bought this Cd, I knew that I already had much of the music already, but there were a few new songs. I just had to get it for that reason. And I had to get it so that I had more than one recording of Sarah's finest songs. I absolutely love her and feel she was and is the ultimate Christine in "Phantom." I know I would be in a minority. I think she is past that part of her life and could not play the part again, but how I wish I had seen her. I could only imagine. If you have never heard Sarah sing before, this is a perfect CD to introduce her voice. The fact that she can sing so many different styles always amazes me. I suppose I appreciate that since I am a singer myself. I recommend this Cd to anyone.

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12
This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

Clay Crosse nabbed the New Artist of the Year Dove Award in 1995 and since then the talented male vocalist has charted enough No. 1 Christian inspirational singles to put together a nice little sampler. Crosse can capably perform in several styles as evidenced by his cover of Andraé Crouch's gospel-great "The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power," the funk-laden "Saving the World," and the beautiful balladry in "My Place Is with You." More than a powerful voice, Crosse treats each number with an equal measure of emotion and obviously leaves little behind in the studio. The collection also includes two new tracks, leading with "I Will Follow Christ," a powerhouse testimonial featuring the high-octane trio of Crosse, BeBe Winans, and Bob Carlisle. --Michael Lyttle

When I first heard this CD was coming out with so few releases under his belt, I was surprised. I didn't figure they'd have enough material already. But when I saw the tracks, I knew I was wrong.
Of course the title song was included, probably his best known song but a convicting song of commitment. But the songs range in style from ballad ("My Place is with You") to adult contemporary ("Midnight Cry") and light pop ("His Love's Comin' Over Me"). Then there are the fun songs "Saving the World" and "I Call Your Name." Yet Clay manages to handle each new style with ease.
Unfortunately, Clay has a small following for such a big talent. Don't be left out. Get this collection and enjoy his rich vocals and some great songs.
A very good album.......2002-04-17
I think Clay Crosse is a very good Contemporary Christian music artist. I liked all the songs. He's definitely an artist I'll be listening to more. As a Christian, also, some or most of the the songs were meaningful. If you haven't, I would recommend checking Clay out!
Awesome.......2001-04-20
Clay Crosse is my all-time favorite Contemporary Christian singer. He has an amazing voice and an awesome testimony, and he has inspired me so much, especially with the story behind his latest CD "A Different Man".... I'm sure you'll be touched like I was. "I Surrender All" is one of Clay's best CDs. The compilation has all of the best songs from his other CDs, and they're all awesome!!! I love his music!!! I would recommend this CD to anyone and everyone.
excellent.......2000-09-20
I have to admit to not being very familiar with Clay Crosse, but when I picked up this CD, I was stunned to hear favorites from the radio that I didn't know the titles of. All of the songs are very inspirational and upbeat -- the kind that really get you pumped and recharged. You won't regret having this in your collection.

A better selection should have been considered and recorded.......2005-05-15
McNair's light soprano shines in some of the selections on this album, but the Countess and Constanze are not her fach. She may have the notes, but the voice lacks the depth to penetrate these characters. She also sounds a bit bland as her voice 'colours' cannot give enough of an interpretation to the arias
Nice light evening music.......2003-06-14
Maybe it was the nice cool breeze through my window but her voice and Mozart was such a nice touch. Talk about relaxing!
This one is a keeper.
Very good, a bit too light for some songs.......2000-12-17
Sylvia Mcnair has a pure, simple, yet enchanting voice. There is nothing simple about her coloraura though, which is just out of this world. The melisma's and runs are so clear and vocally supported. Like "Martern aller Arten", which arouses thoughts of other coloratura roles. The high notes in this piece, which are astonomically high mind you, are the most powerful I've ever heard. Of all pieces, this, unfortuanetly, is the only true one of coloratura proportions. She needs to record more!! I see a possible "Caro Nome" or yes even a "Sempre Libera". The "Porgi Amor" and "Ach, ich fuhl's" are both too heavy for Mcnair, this is why I only give four stars. The "Deh Veni" and "Dove Sono", though, are just perfect for her voice. All-in-all a pretty good CD, but could have been put together a bit better.

Dennis Jernigan certainly does surrender. I can feel and hear the spirit of God working and praising through this brilliant artist and album. This CD is perfect for dancing, singing, praying, crying and definately worshipping to. Varied and interesting, I would recommend this CD to anyone who needs help to focus and meet with God in their house or with friends.
