About the Artist
Jody Cortez is regarded as a top-notch producer, arranger and first-rate session drummer. Jody is the musical producer and arranger of A Journey Within. For many years, Jody has been known for his musical talent and for bringing the best people together for different artistic projects such as the 1992 Academy Awards' Rock Against Drunk Driving featuring Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Ringo Starr, David Crosby, Graham Nash and a host of others. He served as Musical Director for Boz Scaggs as well as coordinating session musicians for Paramount Pictures. Jody was also the drummer on stage at Woodstock II for CSN. Jody's talents shine through on A Journey Within as he plays a pivotal role creating a musical experience you'll want to repeat again and again.

James Walton is producer of the successful "Dr. Walton" self-help series available at Amazon.com. He is executive producer of A Journey Within. He is also a published poet whose work has appeared in the National Library of Poetry. James Walton and Jody Cortez conceptualized "A Journey Within" and James contributed his poetic talent to the spoken word on the CD. It's also James's voice that lends a soothing touch with the vocals.

JD Daniel is one of LA's foremost session keyboard musicians arranging for Giorgio Moroder, Rickie Lee Jones, Rodger Hodson of Supertramp, and Steve Lukather of Toto. He has arranged, composed and performed on some of the world's biggest hits to date. Through JD's exceptional talent, he transforms mere notes on a keyboard into a dance that fills your heart and releases your mind.

Dean Cortez has worked with Boz Scaggs and has served as the base guitar player for Hiroshima for the past 20 years. He was contracted with Paramount Pictures for 3 years contributing to motion picture sound tracks and television themes. Baseball player Bernie Williams swings more than a bat! Like the former pro basketball player Wayman Tisdale, Williams is a serious musician--a good acoustic and electric guitarist. Even if the guy is no Pat Metheny, the Puerto Rican-born superstar is classically trained, has a decent tone, and credible technique. Supporting Williams on his debut endeavor is a who's who of contemporary jazz and Latin superstars: from the banjo maestro Bela Fleck and keyboardist David Benoit to the Panamanian salsa singer/songwriter Ruben Blades, and the salsero Gilberto Santa Rosa. Musically, the material includes Latin-tinged, smooth jazz numbers, like the spirited "La Salsa En Mi," the bouncy, "Samba Novo" by the Brazilian guitar king Baden Powell, and reverent readings of Kansas's "Dust in the Wind" and Billy Joel's "And So It Goes." The most heartfelt track on this CD is the wistful "Para Don Berna," an elegy to Williams' late father. Now, we have a good idea of what this outfielder will do when he quits his day job. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Talented writer AND outstanding jazz guitarist.......2005-07-18

Those whose idea of a guitar virtuoso is Jimi Hendrix probably won't be impressed by this album. Bernie Williams is a REAL guitarist whose years of studying classical guitar are obvious on this album. The music he plays here is technically challenging, and he plays it not only crisply but emotionally. The fact that he also wrote most of it makes it all the more impressive.

The songs are mostly soft latin jazz, a few with vocals (but Bernie doesn't sing), and the last one being a contemporary Christian song with Bernie's kids singing (it's adorable).

As a Red Sox fan, I felt as if I was compromising my principles by buying this album. But as a true music lover, it was a good choice.

Not bad for a ball player.......2005-02-25

I was really surprised when I bought this CD. Some reviewers here are saying the CD sucks, and only NY Yankees fans are giving it great reviews. Also that the songs sound alike and and you can't tell it's Bernie Williams. Give the guy a break !! How many CD's has Boney James cut? Sure you can tell it's Boney, but this is Bernie's first CD. Also, baseball has nothing to do with it. I'm an A's fan and totally disliked Bernie Williams. This CD made me realize that there's more to a person than meets the eye. You can hear his cultural upbringing in his choice of songs and his style of guitar playing. This is a great jazz album to listen to. I really like the David Sancious organ solo. My only problem is where is the follow up album?

I have owned the CD for over a year and still listen to it frequently. A great debut release. Can't wait for the next one.

Just bought "The Journey Within"... excellent album! I've listened to it 3 times today, and I've enjoyed it as much as my Pat Metheny and Armik albums. May I also recommend the music DVD by the same title. Bernie, if you ever read this... you are as graceful, classy and talented with a guitar as you are in Yankee Pinstripes. Your work is a pleasure to listen to, and I look forward to your next release. You will have a long, successful career as a musician after your number is retired by the Yankees.

Okay okay, call him "Santana Lite" if you want..........2004-06-10

The plain fact is that this is a pretty decent recording by a pro athlete. Most of the material here is Williams' own compositions. The leadoff "La Salsa en Mi" is a bouncy, catchy number that most of my friends who are New York Yankee fans were humming to themselves the first few weeks after this album's release, having picked it up from the Yes Network boys running clips from it here and there between innings last season. It's just as infectious as that old Mangione classic "Feels So Good". When Williams does covers like Kansas' "Dust In the Wind" and Billy Joel's "And So It Goes", he prudently keeps the arrangements true to the originals. You may say "so what", but that's practically a law when a rookie plays another dude's tune. And I have to take issue with one observation about the "Williams Kids" track. It consists of two junior chorus level songs sung by Bernie's kids, backed by piano played either by Dad or one of them (who knows?) and their solid glee club harmonies are consistent with children of a musician. And anyway, it says clearly that it's a "bonus track" tacked onto the end. So it hardly detracts from an already good-sized album. Come on already, they also included the shorter single version of "Just Because" here. Ben Sidran once said that jazz is "the American classical music", but let's face it--people who actually feel that way in the full sense of the word verge upon a purism that hampers their capacity to enjoy entertainment. Sidran notwithstanding, jazz is the original rock'n'roll. I won't say this effort is Grammy-bound, but this album is not this man's "day job", you know? Most of this man's fan base is centered in another profession, which leaves him with little to prove before he even plays a note. So we get a sound that's a little Carlos, a little DiMeola and a little Metheny. Maybe a little Gabor Szabo, one of Santana's biggest early influences. So it's bound to be derivative--most of Bernie's "dues" have been paid out in center field at the Stadium with gear by Rawlings and Wilson rather than Gibson and Fender. The upside is that he's free to just have fun here. And anyway, hardly anything I listen to cops any Grammys. Don't get me started on some of the noise that does.

Susaye Greene is the outstanding gem on this one!.......2002-08-04

I quite enjoyed this CD. Mr. Pine's interpretations of jazz flavours and styles are impressive. HOWEVER, I bought this disc for one track only --- for "Children Of The Ghetto" performed by Miss Susaye Greene. For those who are unware, Miss Greene was the last original Supreme in the late 1970s. Currently, Miss Greene has a CD out entitled "No Fear Here" which, if one can imagine showcases even MORE vocal power than in this fabulous jazz performance included on this Pine CD.

This is a great album. I think this is some courtney pine's best work. this album is great to put on and listen to the whole thing.

Amazing.......2002-12-10

This is an incrediblr piece of new wave, gothic, and doom all combined to fit a moody flowing album. This is all produced, and Performed by James Allin. He writes all the music and lyrics. From the first second you put it on you are overwhelmed by flowing tunes, the lyrics are very poetic, and his vocal rythms fit the album well. Throughout the album there is a constant soft background drumming, for the foreground music. He is reasonably talented in guitar, bass, and drums. But what most amazes me about this album is that it is done by one person. EVERY track is solid, and there is not one moment of boredom on this whole cd, it starts strong with Shillhoette of Mind, possibly my favorite song on this album, and progresses through transitional instrumentals, (Arcanum Hall, and The Myriad Will Culminate are great songs, both involving woman vocals)to the end, last song, Ascension Passage, another great one. The crunching guitar solos often remind me of all tiamat's albums, past there live album(sleeping beauty) and mark high on my favorite disc range. Also it sounds quite like Pink Floyd at its lighter moments with, especially with the poetic lyrics, and usage of rythm in his vocals. I recommend this album to any fan of rock!

firstly it was a great cd from start to finish reminding quite a bit of Tiamat with their "wildhoney" and "A deeper kind of slumber" sound. The fact that this Visionaire project is done by one man is simply astounding. At first few listens i was wondering a bit about how much I liked this but then it really started growing on me with the moods presented. I would recommend this cd if you really like Tiamats wildhoney and A Deeper kind of slumber as Visionaire fits perfectly into that mold. This cd certainly has the depth and talent to continue where Tiamat left off. I would have given this 4 1/2 stars if I could.

We need more bands like this one!.......2001-04-27

I like this CD a lot. The first song starts off a mood of a depressive floating state of mind and introduces some nice crunchy guitars to add spice at the right times. This is for fans of Goth, Rock, Pink Floyd (you can hear a heavy Pink Floyd influence throughout Visionaire, only make it a little heavier and doomy). "Fragmented" and "Conquest" are heavier songs to snap you away from the moodiness for a while until James comes along and transforms your mind state with his excellent writing and structuring skills. What can I say? This thing needs a few complete listens before you can capture all the depth on here but once you do, the mysteries will unfold! A must have for sure.
