Editorial Reviews
David Lewis, "Cadence: The Review of Jazz & Blues: Creative Improvised Music", Vol. 25, No. 10, October 1999
"There is an admirable relaxation about the band's groove and Flannery is a fluent player who impresses with the sauntering and playful spirit of her playing, as she also does in scuh memorable originals as the jaunty ostinato vamp of "Island Reverie" and the melancholy title track's nursery rhyme refrain that evolves into disjointed counterpoint. The free floating solos build a melancholy ballad mood that is most memorable. Flannery and her band show that they are capable of generating music of real substance. Recommended."
Product Description
The compellingly beautiful music on "Slow Dance at the Asylum" transcends the boundaries of jazz, classical and new age music. At times the listener feels ecstatically uplifted, at other times mesmerized by the interlacing rhythms and lines. Moreover, the moods evoked by shaking goat toe nails, playing a Jew's harp, and blowing through whirling tubes transport the listener beyond the usual realm of the jazz quintet. You travel through churning oceans to seductive islands and beyond the stars. This album is a harbinger of a promising new direction for jazz -- sophisticated, adventurous, and profound.
