Originally the soundtrack to a Japanese television mini-series, Silk Road set the standard for electronic/spiritual albums in the mid-1980s. Kitaro's placement of synthesizer center stage and densely layering complementary textures made Silk Road new age's innovative and influential equivalent of Sgt. Pepper's. Fluid synthesizer leads, sweeping washes, and sequenced rhythms evoke sacred-quest imagery that is imbued with a contemplative serenity. Soaring synthesizer lines suggest yearning for spiritual experience, while deep, rolling bass tones emulate a cosmic Om. The themes are continued in Silk Road II; both recordings are tastefully reserved--especially compared with the bombastic electronic orchestrations that mar many of Kitaro's later efforts. --Richard Price

Yes, it is a lofty statement to be sure to call this the single greatest New Age album ever produced, but once you hear it, you hopefully would agree. Originally released as a two-CD set (with what is now called Silk Road 1), this groundbreaking audio odyssey (originally written for a documentary on the Silk Road connecting China to Japan), is awe-inspiring, moving, and ultimately transcendant. The final track of this epic tour-de-force, Tienshan, is the single greatest track I have ever heard of any kind of music. I have been motivated throughout my life by this entire album, particularly Tienshan. Big words, but it's a big album. I cannot recommend it highly enough if you like Tangerine Dream, Deuter or even Yanni. Kitaro, however, is in a class by himself. Dim the lights, close your eyes, and journey into the deepest realms of time, space and the human imagination with this monolithically beautiful album.

Cann't tell you about recording quality of this edition - I have older one . This is the part 2 CD from " Silk Road " collection . And it stays with the tradition of first album : slow and deep , very relexing mood . If on some of Kitaro albums I have favorite parts and have to put them on "repeat" ," Silk Road " ( 1 and 2 ) I just listen to .

The product came in a good packing material without any damage within 7 days as notified by the seller. It was supposed to be a used one, but it did not have any noticable scratches on the CD.
When played, the DC produced beautiful sounds. I am very happy about the purchase. Thanks. I saved over $7 which was 45% savings over a new one. Miki

In this CD Kitaro explodes the magical and misterious ways of the life. Songs like Peace or Bell Tower have the particularity of move our mind to another place.

This is simply one of my favorite musical works of all time. The orchestration is magnificent. Something like this could easily have drifted into very cheesy territory indeed, but this is first class all the way. I still only have a vinyl copy and one not so good quality tape. It astounds me that this is not still available! I would buy a cd at a reasonable price (or even not so reasonable) in a heartbeat!

I love this CD. It combines the best of Kitaro's work with a full orchestra. The result is absolutely magnificent.

After a dazzling start to his career, which has made him one of the world's best-known and most popular pianists, and a run of recordings of Mozart, Bach, Gershwin and Stravinsky which have made their mark on the classical catalogue, Fazýl Say now shows us another facet of his art: his own compositions. Anyone who has attended one of Fazýl Say's concerts has heard some of his own compositions played as encores, among them the now famous Black Earth for solo piano, based on a Turkish folksong, in which Fazýl, evoking the saz, a Turkish traditional instrument, simultaneously plays the keys and the strings inside the piano, producing an incredible sound. This Turkish pianist is also a passionate enthusiast for improvisation and jazz: `Art Tatum and Ravi Shankar are just as much of an inspiration to me as Bach or Beethoven,' he likes to say. These influences are obvious in this disc's stunning closing track, Dervish in Manhattan, recorded live at the 2000 Radio France & Montpelier Festival before an electrified audience. Contrasting traditional Sufi music and the modernity of "swing," Dervish in Manhattan dazzles with its constantly changing time signatures, rhythmic sequences, syncopations and offbeat accents.

    I'm not by any means a big fan of New-Age composer Kitaro. The bulk of his creative work for the 80's and the 90's tends to blend together into a pastiche formula: _bombastic_ being the term used most often to describe the fair-to-middling results. There doesn't seem much point in preferring 'Light of the Spirit' over 'Asia' or 'Ten Years,' for they all sound about the same: and none of it sounds very good. Despite his Asian background, there is little exotic, inspiring or innovative to Kitaro's sound.

    But if you tune your ears back a couple decades, you'll find a completely different Kitaro at the studio-helm. The trilogy Silk Road, Silk Road 2, and Full Moon Story in particular bristle with unique quality. Here we have beautiful synth soundscapes melded with natural resonance and strange-but-stirring sound effects...the mark of genius that, alas, has all but vanished from 1980 on. But no matter--at least these original recordings from Kitaro's "hungry period" remain, albeit at augmented price and limited availability.

    Silk Road 2 is my favorite of the trilogy, and quite possibly my favorite instrumental album of all time. Originally created for a TV miniseries, there is a mystical quality to the composition: serene and sublime, it evokes imagery of distant lands, different times, forbidden horizons. Silk Road 2 is great for relaxation, meditation, martial-art practice, and Yoga.

    Highly recommended.

    I have been privileged to hear several of Mr. Suk's consistently thrilling live performances, and this CD was no disappointment. Suk takes the instrument through its full Romantic range, from loud, fast, and powerful to subtle and expressive. He offers flawless technique with emotion and introspection.

    Silk Road takes you to mistical lands with very exciting experiences on your way. Music is very cleverly balanced in and within each section. One will enjoy the beautiful melodies of turkish folk and classical music in extremely well compositions through fantactic interpretations of both the soloist-composer and the orchestra.
