Product Description

222 minute 3-CD set of all-new material.

Focusing on ambient "zones" created as tone meditations for the living space, immersion : three is destined to create a new benchmark in the long-form ambient genre. With one composition per disc, the nearly 4 hours of all-new material on immersion : three display Steve's quiet mastery of the immersive ambient genre.

Gently effective at low volume, the non-dynamic nature of these spaces supports focused day and night activities. Minimal in nature and sonically uninterrupted for 74 minutes per disc, these pieces bring Steve's years as a sound painter of deep subtle spaces to a rarified point in time.

immersion : three is perfect for creative states, sleeping, reading, long hours at the computer and other functions where traditional music could be considered invasive. This release is especially effective in dissolving the sense of linear time.

"Steve Roach continues to make a rarefied sound as the Mark Rothko of electronic music." - John Diliberto, Echoes Syndicated Radio

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Third Installment of Steve Roach's "Immersion" Series........2007-07-22

Ambient music pioneer Steve Roach continues his exploration into long-form soundscapes with "Immersion Three". Unlike the previous two single-disc installments, "Immersion Three" is a triple-disc set each containing one long 73-minute track. Stylistically, it is not too different from the music of the previous "Immersion's". Each of the three long tracks consist of unchanging dream-like atmospheres with long held chords and drones. The pieces also slowly build with a slight intensity as they progress.
Despite having the same musical principle throughout this long set, each piece does carry its own mood. "First Light" on disc one has an almost airy quality to it while disc two's "Sleep Chamber" tends to be on the darker side. Disc three's "Still" has a slightly unsettling feel to it with what sounds like an echoed church organ playing slow dissonant chord progressions.
For the die-hard Steve Roach fan, "Immersion Three" is another winner. For the uninitiated, a triple-dose of unchanging ambient drone music may be a bit overwhelming. I would definitely recommend "Immersion One" over "Three" to those people. However, this music is not bad at all as Steve continues to push the boundaries towards long-form ambient composition with great results. Together, the three pieces on "Immersion Three" form somewhat of an Ambient Symphony and work together as both separate pieces of music as well as a unified whole.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars eno didn't like it that much..........2007-04-15

brian is not amused when you compare this roach release to any of his (brian's) early ambient pieces. yes, the music is repetitive, but it lacks an underlying dynamic. having said that, roach's lush orchestration is impeccable. the music can be improved, amazingly, by converting the sound file to a TIFF file, uploading it into photoshop, and tweaking the contrast, levels and saturation adjustments a bit. then, convert back to WAV format and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Gentle, relaxing ambience, but little more........2006-12-17

Very little needs to be said about Immersion: One. A long, soothing, synthesised composition, that has the effect of relaxing and soothing. It is obviously expertly composed, and there is great attention to detail. For me though, I prefer ambient music that challenges the conventions of the genre (one might prefer to look at Tim Hecker or Aphex Twin, to that end). It is a beautiful piece of music, and uses equalisation in a wonderfully dynamic way, but it could never be on my list of the greatest electronic music. Four stars, because Steve Roach achieved his intention admirably - Immersion: One is a joy to hear. In the end though, it is still conventional ambient music.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Concentrating & Meditation.......2006-12-09

A completely immersive minimalist ambient. There are no interruptions or sudden disturbing sounds, thus I've found this CD to be my favorite for studying, creative work, or any work that requires well focused concentration.

The entire hour+ composition consists of a rich, deep, multitimbral ambient sound. It doesn't vary greatly, but it is deeply colored with other subtle random sounds. This is how I imagine the Aurora Borealis may sound. I highly recommend this CD if you're in to this kind of music.

On a side note - I believe the two people who gave this CD such a poor review didn't fully understand what kind of music they were buying. I think they may have been looking for something that was "entertaining".

2 out of 5 stars BORING.......2006-11-25

Basically, this is ONE FULL HOUR of ambient "synth". With a few clicks and clacks thrown in for good measure. There's no variation, no theme, no escalating moments. Just mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm for a full hour. I guess it's not bad if you need some background noise for something, but even that there's better albums out there. Tim Hecker's "Harmony in Ultraviolet " is a really good example of that. It's "ambient noise", but it really flows well and just sounds great. It seems like Steve Roach could take some lessons from him, as this album is pure boredom.

1 out of 5 stars Mind-numbing.......2006-07-16

I know this stuff is supposed to be mind-numbing but it should not be as mind-numbingly boring and irritating as this is. The major problems with it appears to be the absence of good ideas or genuine emotional content. If you want something to send you to sleep then this may do the job (although it wouldn't work with me because of the irritation factor) but if you want ambient sound while you are working I suggest you try Brian Eno.

Steve Roach makes music that moves outside of conventional time and space. As when small pebbles are tossed in a placid pond, his subtle changes have monumental effects, because the dynamics have been lowered and time stretched to the edge. That's why, at about the 23-minute mark of this 73-minute ambient opus, it's such a shock when a low growl--like slow-motion waves--breaks across the speakers. "Artifact Ghost," the only composition on Immersion: Two, is another of Roach's long-form works, harkening back to Structures from Silence but without even that album's distended melodic sway. As a gentle Twilight Zone-like siren sound wafts its way in the far distance, Roach does a slow dive into a music of deep viscosity. With sounds rustling like insects prattling in the eaves and the wind brushing branches against the window, "Artifact Ghost" will either scare you out of your pants or take you out of your body. On Immersion: Two, Steve Roach continues to make a rarefied sound as the Mark Rothko of electronic music. --John Diliberto

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Stabilized music tone.......2007-02-13

I must disagree with my fellow reviewers and the CD liner notes; I feel this CD should be played at a higher volume than recommended to appreciate subtlies it offers. Uncomplicated music does not necessarily equate with simple music. And there is nothing simple about this uncomplicated nuanced ambient offering. One long sustained track holds a static pre-ordined level while contours of sound reassert neoplanes at subliminal levels. There is more to this music than initially meets the ear. It takes expertise to produce this type of music and have it maintain its self-worth. There is no transition here. The veneerless starkness presents a purist ambient project.

5 out of 5 stars Part Two of Steve Roach's Immersion's........2006-10-15

Steve Roach has earnestly followed up to the release of "Immersion One" earlier in the year with "Immersion Two". Like the first volume, the disc consists of a single uninterupted ambient piece that runs over 73-minutes in length. Whereas "Immersion One" was more of a minimalist piece with only subtle changes, "Immersion Two's" piece entitled "Artifact Ghost" features a bit more variation. The overall feel is a bit darker and intense as well. A slow forboding phrase repeats throughout the piece with occasional jolts of low rumbling tones which add to the overall intensity of the music.
Despite its subtle themes and variations, "Artifact Ghost" is still a piece of music that is intended as background music to enhance the mood of whatever room or place the music is being played in. Like the previous "immersion", echoes of Brian Eno are displayed in abundance throughout this music but the sound is definitely Steve Roach at his most ambient.
Overall, this is a solid follow-up to the first "Immersion" and one can only hope that "Immersion Three" will be even stronger.

Album Description

A vibrational sound attunement and healing journey through the chakras. Like a therapeutic bath, SONIC IMMERSION clears, attunes and heals the energy centers with sound, light and color. " I could feel the corresponding chakra vibrating as you went through each one." ..."...A powerful auric clearing. Took me deeply into the chakras to view my issues and fill them with light. Liberating and sublime!"

Recorded live at TOM KENYON'S Sound Healing Conference, this guided meditation is performed with the cosmic penetrating frequencies of the Sonic Steel Space Bass, a very powerful healing instrument. An original design of Constance Demby's, the Space Bass has been recorded by LUCAS SKYWALKER STUDIOS for their filmscores, and filmed by DISCOVERY CHANNEL. The low frequencies and long standing waves of the Space Bass (some 30 ft long), are potent and penetrating, and tend to break up old encrustations."...WHAT AN AMAZING INSTRUMENT!! I was healed by the SPACE BASS, but most important, I felt hope. I have the SONIC IMMERSION CD playing over and over, and I am now inspired to be all that I can be on this planet..."

"I felt altered and cleansed, renewed and deeply relaxed" .... "I arrived at the workshop with an irregular heartbeat, and left with a normal heartbeat"...."The Sonic Immersion touched, opened and cleansed my chakras at a level that is so deep it is usually unreachable in the third dimension. My chakras were expelling old gunk like seven oil wells gushing at the same time!".... "During the Sonic Immersion, I felt my heart open up, and energy from an endless supply poured from my heart."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good Vibrations.......2006-03-02

Constance Demby's Sonic Immersion CD is a revelation. The first time I sat quietly to listen to the healing vibrations of her Space Bass I had an amazing experience. While she was producing these extraordinary sounds to align and heal the first Chakra I experienced a sudden, massive clearing, which manifested itself as palpitations of energy leaving the lower part of my back. I have never, ever experienced a release like that before. As the session progressed my jaw started to vibrate gently and only stopped when the sounds of the Space Base ceased. As with any stress release or clearing, thoughts will arise and there were plenty of those, which meant that the vibrations Constance Demby was creating were also having an effect at a much deeper level in my mind. To have an experience like this as a direct result of listening to the sounds of her Space Bass is a revelation to me. It proves the theory that the right sounds with intent can have transforming effects on our minds and bodies. I continued to experience further clearings throughout the following week and I have to say that my back is in a much better shape than it has been for years. Only recently, I had another major clearing while listening to the Sonic Immersion CD on headphones. I was sitting in my armchair with eyes closed, totally absorbed in the vibrations Constance was creating for the sixth or Brow Chakra, when I experienced a sudden explosion of white light followed instantly with a sharp release of pain from the temple by my left eye. I felt some pressure in this area for about 24 hours, as if a slow release of tension was still going on. Since then I have felt different, clearer, sharper and definitely less stressed. If you are looking for a way to clear deep-rooted stresses and boost your spiritual development then look no further, Constance Demby's Sonic Immersion CD is it.

5 out of 5 stars Shake loose anything unwanted that still hangs on!.......2006-01-27

I use a lot of different cds in my meditation, yoga and inner explorations. I find the music of Constance Demby to be the best for connecting to the sacred cosmos while staying grounded in the here and now.
A much earlier cd, Opus Magnificat, is her best in my opinion. This cd, Sonic Immersion, is the first time that I've heard the Space Bass as the major instrument in Constance's work. If you can manage to actually feel the speakers vibrate while you meditate, you will have a memorable experience.
I've arranged it so my bed is connected physically to a sub-woofer speaker and I can actually feel the bed vibrate while I'm meditating. I imagine this to be almost as good as hearing the music live, but in the comfort of my home.
This cd treatment left me full of light and cosmically cleansed to a depth I have not felt before. Highest praises go to Ms. Demby for her incredible work!!
(Re-reviewed with apologies to Constance for my first review which was rated in error.)

4 out of 5 stars we now take you 20,000 leagues under the sea ..........2006-07-03

Nels Cline resides comfortably in a strange patch of territory where anarchic noise meets battered prog, all firmly grounded in jazz; not quite where Pak or Hella is at, not quite Ornette Coleman or Hawkwind. "Lake of Fire Memories" starts out of the gate at a blistering scronk. A difficult, abbreviated descent into hell. Much safer chomping on the title track, longer than an album side and teetering somewhere between an Art Blakey jam, a Sun Ra liftoff and a hearing test. Porous and dense, like a bug in a sponge. Bizarre sounds from battleship undersides in "Ghost Bell Canto," alighting stark, beautiful sculptures: wires coming out of wind, weeds sprouting in the husks of scrapped androids, worms draped in foil.

5 out of 5 stars Primordial Cline.......2005-11-20

Nels Cline, West Coast guitar iconoclast, records his finest achievement. Never one to tread the well-worn paths of guitardom, Cline here ventures into uncharted guitar-bass-drum waters. Striving for and bringing forth a primal aural landscape of heretofore unencountered sounds and sensibilities, Cline stakes out territories and feelings far beyond the precincts of ordinary guitar sounds, reaching for and often evoking a chthonic, primordial musical self-understanding that at once evokes and declaims a rawness of nature that participates in purely controlled chaos.

There's a raw power and elemental intensity present here that taps into nature's most regnant and unconquerable moments, a kind of feral ferocity that steamrolls everything in its way, a presence of such magnitude that all opposing it fades and deliquesces in its presence. Cline and cohorts unleash a sonic force of such enormity that prior efforts along such lines pale by comparison: These dudes have absolutely annexed metal jazz, making it their personal playground, cavorting and gamboling in it with supreme felicity and grace.

Deploying a staggeringly diverse set of sonic strategies, the band pummels listeners with skronks and squeaks, honks and bleeps, shrieks and blats so formidable that the listener is dragged, willy-nilly, into precincts of sonic subversion seldom if ever before encountered in the history of recorded music. This is metal jazz of staggering proportions, a soundscape of thick commotion and roiling anarchy to chill the marrow of all but the most stalwart and intrepid musical explorers.

Listen at your own risk, but be primed for music of uncommon gravity and consequence.

3 out of 5 stars a difficult album to listen to.......1999-11-04

A daring first album by SPK. Everything sounds manipulated and the instruments are not readily identifiable. I think the first four tracks are excellent (1. Emanation Machine R. Gie 2. Suture Obsession 3. Macht Schrecken 4. Beruftverbot), but the sixth through ninth tracks are a bit dull. The latter tracks do not work as well and sound unfinished. Perhaps the two best tracks are "Emanation Machine R. Gie" and "Beruftverbot." In short, a good Industrial album for those who like Throbbing Gristle and early Test Depatment.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-06-10

My preschool aged daughter always asks to "hear Spanish" and we listen to this cd almost every day in the car. She has picked up an amazing vocabulary. I promised her that when we learned every song on this cd, we would buy the next one. She's nearly there!

Now that Susy has the matching book out, my daughter sits in the back seat with the book open to the appropriate page and follows along. This is a really great cd, the music is very catchy, and the best part is that I get to learn Spanish too!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Spanish.......2006-04-14

This is a great CD for both children and adults who are new to Spanish. The tunes are catchy and easy to learn, and having the lyrics included makes it easier to get a grasp of pronunciation. We go to Susy's class, and the CDs are a great way to reinforce what we've been singing there. We always make sure that we've got some 'Susy music' if we're going on a car journey: our three children love this CD, simply because the songs are so much fun, and I listen to it even if I'm on my own! I've discovered that singing 'Los Colores' is a great way to calm down our baby if he's fractious. Susy's enthusiasm comes through in the music, and I'd recommend this CD to anyone with young children.

5 out of 5 stars I love this one too!.......2006-04-09

Cantemos en Espanol was our first cd. After my son scratched his first copy, we went right out (never hesitating) to buy a new one! Susy is just AMAZING. I wish I could exclaim enough how wonderful all her products are! My son loves her DVDs and CDs. He love to sing along and it is wonderful to hear him actually speaking some spanish! My daughter (now 21 months old) is starting to pick up some too. They frequently ask for her cd's in the car! They make wonderful gifts too!

5 out of 5 stars Helped me for my Spanish test!.......2006-04-07

I have this CD for my now 2 year old who takes Susy's class in San Jose. I was struggling with the Spanish alphabet when I started playing this CD more and finally am getting the hang of it. Of her 3 CDs, this is definitely the one to start with. It has all the basics and the tunes will stick with adults and children. It is definitely helping my son learn to identify letters. It also makes some long car drives go much, much faster!

5 out of 5 stars We love this CD!!.......2006-04-06

We have been listening to this CD in the car for about 1 year now. We never tire of it. My 4 year old daughter knows all the words and is quickly picking up Spanish even though we do not speak Spanish at home. The music is very well done, has a great catchy beat that parents and kids will all love. If you have been wanting a fun easy way to dabble in exposing your child to a second language - this CD is a great start. We also love her DVD's as well. Check those out as well if you can. It is also a car favorite! Keeps my daughter very happy and entertained.

3 out of 5 stars Less energy than on their previous albums.......2002-01-31

It's actually a three-and-a-half star CD. I've enjoyed Mephisto Walz for about five years, but "Immersion" doesn't have the same variety or punch as "Thalia" or "The Eternal Deep." It's not a bad album, but it's not the best introduction to this band.

The pros:
Christianna Leonard still writes good, solid lyrics with a lot of mytholgical references and nature imagery. She's on key, and she keeps her vocals firmly in the mid-range, like a less dynamic Monica Richards (Faith and The Muse).

A question:
Is "Immersion" a theme album? The similarity of beat and rhythm among the songs suggests so, but it could just be writer's block.

The cons:
The mixing is not well done. (Perhaps it was harder to finance recording with two members absent.) The vocals, guitars and drums are all right at the same level; this gives the songs an unintentionally "flat" sound. The songs share pretty much the same beat, structure and melodies. It's competent, but less inspired than earlier releases. As another reviewer noted, the "reading" of some lyrics is a distraction.

There are high points. "Age of Nothing" has a little snarl to it. "The Tyger" sets a good darkwave mood, and is a reminder that Christianna is pretty well-read. "Ode to The West Wind" has more minor chord drama than the ten songs before, so it's a good finale.

Again, not a bad album - just not their best. I have high hopes for the next one.

Some of Mephisto's earlier works also included German lyrics, which to some novices can be a bit daunting. The tracks on Immersion are sung in English, which may or may not detract from their European legion of fans, however it is and always will be the great mood, tone and sound accompanied by Christianna's delicious vocals which will draw in fans, old and new alike. Even if one were not aware of Bari-Bari's connection with the band Christian Death, this work he has created remains a true testament to the wealth and brilliance of the artistry that is frequently lacking in the underground.

On some levels this current recording is a nod towards the darker days of New Wave as it was hybridizing its roots with the post punk scene and evolving to become the "goth" sound. Reverberation of vocals and instruments often gives the feeling of being in a darkened club, so essentially they have managed to capture a goth club feeling without the listener ever needing to leave their living room. It is not every band that is able to take the nightclub feeling and deliver it on a recording, however Mephisto Walz manages to convey this flawlessly with each recording. Needless to say, it is often an oasis of musical water to the ears to listen to this at work when one is surrounded by abysmal light FM radio admirers. At least by listening to this wondrous CD, I can allow my mind to hearken back to the last club experience or look forward to the next one in order to get through the day.

Besides the trademark guitar licks, the lyrics indicate an older but wiser band. We are brought through imaginary gardens where life is viewed from a distant perspective. Introspection culminates in a semblance of self responsibility while the world around us is in disarray and decay, pretty much reflecting the outward human condition and the world around us. Christianna breathes life into the lyrics by delving into the raw passion to render them beyond mere words, yet parlays an appropriate level of apathetic distancing when a particular song demands it.

When in doubt which music one should purchase as an introduction to the gothic underground, Mephisto Walz remains a consistent band with quality sound that needs to be a part of any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Switchblade Symphony.......2001-08-30

This is good music to anyone who loves SS but I like this even more. The tracks are weird and sicko, like SS's songs too, but in a different way. When SS music is very explicitly wacko, MW music seems to come from a deeper, darker, more subtle psychological issues. I would have given 5 stars if tracks 3 and 7 weren't such disappointments. I would also like to hear the vocalist sing a bit more and speak/rap a bit less.

5 out of 5 stars LYCIA + COCTEAU TWINS + PINK FLOYD = iMmerSioN.......2001-04-19

This is brilliant, what an incredible mixture of gothic operatic overtones. Thunderous choir and joy, deep textures of mellodic shimmers. Creeping graciousness , crawling to the cortex of the soul. Willowy yet stern, vivacious yet crude. Every time they put out a cd, its seems to get better and better.

5 out of 5 stars Great bit of melancholy for the autumnal spirit..........1999-01-25

This is a great band... the guitarist (plus former (?) members Johann Schumann and David Glass) have each participated in the seminal Christian Death, but don't let that fool you!! This is artwork, a piece of melancholy and poetry in musical form. It's a very beautiful CD, and the singers voice is amazing! Perhaps one of the best CD's I've heard in awhile!

5 out of 5 stars Sing in Spanish.......2006-10-31

My daughters (ages 3 and 6) love listening to Susy and her silly, upbeat Spanish songs. They request this cd everytime we get in the car, they love to sing along with her AND they are learning Spanish!

5 out of 5 stars We love Susy and this is our favorite CD!.......2006-05-31

My daughter (age 2) loves listening to this CD and actually can sing along with many of the songs! We have all 3 of her CD's, and they all are a wonderful complement to taking her class. However, even if we weren't taking her class, my daughter would be learning a good amount of Spanish just by listening to the CD's. I think that between the 3 CD's (Cantemos, Los Bomberos, and this one), this one has the best collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars Another fantastic CD from Susy.......2006-04-14

Susy Dorn's CDs are the best ones I've come across for learning Spanish through singing: once again her creativity and enthusiasm inspire us all to join in. Starting with the jolly 'Los Bomberos,' and finishing with the more contemplative 'Un Canto por la Paz,' the songs on this CD have memorable tunes and lyrics, covering a good range of pitch and tempo. Our three children (ages 4, 3 and not-quite-1) love listening to Susy's music again and again: this CD is helping us all to learn Spanish!
