Great bluegrass music.......2005-09-01
I am new to bluegrass, but I find this band's music to be uplifting and very enjoyable.
Four heads, eight hands, one mind.......2002-10-26
Well, they're not quite going to displace Railroad Earth at the top of my Favorite Band Currently In Existence list, but they're getting mighty close. They've grown on me so much over the last year or so that I think they've passed the String Cheese Incident and moved into second place.
Much nearer to "traditional" bluegrass than either of those other two bands (in part because they don't use drums/percussion), the Yonder Mountain String Band plays like one mind with four heads and eight hands. Each of the four (Jeff Austin, mandolin; Ben Kaufman, bass; Adam Aijala, guitar; Dave Johnston, banjo) is just so good, and so in tune with the other three, that they sound as though they could play the phone book, without rehearsal, and make it interesting to listen to.
Fortunately, they don't need to resort to playing telephone directories, since all four of them also sing and write. I personally like Austin's stuff best -- one of the reasons I decided to review this particular CD is that Austin's stunning "Half Moon Rising" and "If There's Still Ramblin' In The Rambler (Let Him Go)" are on it -- but the rest of them turn out fine material too. (Plus there's the utterly lovely "To Say Goodbye, To Be Forgiven" by Ben Galloway, who also cowrote "Check Out Time" with Johnston on _Town By Town_.)
Another reason I picked this one to review is that it was produced by Sally Van Meter, whom resophonic-guitar fans will recognize as a master of the instrument (if they know any dobroists other than Jerry Douglas). She gives the foursome a clean, dry, crisp-mountain-air sound and even sits in on a few tracks (lap steel, Scheerhorn, and backing vocals, and she plays on one or two tracks for which the liner notes fail to credit her).
And the third reason is that Darol Anger joins in on fiddle for a few tunes. (Tim O'Brien handles fiddle on _Town By Town_, and he's great too. But I've liked Anger ever since the David Grisman Quintet's first album. And Tony Rice's _Manzanita_. And . . .)
But the main reason to listen to these guys is their tight, and I mean _tight_ performance. How they do it, I don't know; it's like an egg toss between two speeding trains. Anyway, call it newgrass, jamgrass, slamgrass, or whatever you want; these guys can cook. And you need to pay attention if you want to find out how _well_ they can cook; if you just let their stuff play as background music, it can sound deceptively laid-back. It isn't.
Then, too, you have to love a bluegrass band whose liner notes include thanks to the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia, Frank Zappa, Tori Amos, and Sam Bush (a sample culled more or less at random from Jeff Austin's thank-you list). Even if you think you don't like bluegrass, you may want to give these guys a listen if you like any of those other artists; they may surprise you.
If you're just now being introduced to YMSB, I'd recommend starting with this CD and following it with _Town By Town_; then move on to the _Mountain Tracks_ releases. But it won't hurt too much if you vary the order. Heck, you can even get them all at once.
YMSB goes from the Appalachians to the Rockies on Elevation.......2001-08-07
Sheer passion is clear as the voices of Yonder Mountain String Band interweave magically on Elevation. Western themes occasionally surface in the lyrics with stories of sheriffs and outlaws. Solos become a group effort, as Ben, Adam, Dave, and Jeff support each other marvelously with engaging interplay throughout. Elevation is filled with original bluegrass tunes as the music of Yonder Mountain swirls the Appalachians and Rockies together in a mind-bending mosaic unique to their to "drive without drums" style.

Customer Reviews:
Elevation.......2005-07-09
Nightmares on Wax mingles chillout and funk in "Mind Elevation" the fourth official album by this one-man electronic band. As expected, it's blissed and tripped out, with plenty of inventive little flourishes to keep things interesting. The only problem is that it seems to be working too hard to please.
It opens with the terminally mellow "Mind's Eye," a smoothly sweet instrumental that might make you want to make daisy chains and smoke weed. Yep, it really is that chilled-out, even as chillout electronica goes. It's followed by a string of tripped-out, funk-edged songs, which are as sunny and meandering as a summer day.
Things take a sharp turn on "Date With Destiny," where the melody is reined into a more typical pop song, as Chyne B sings about how "time's on your side." She appears on a couple of other songs, the hip-hop "Environment" and the bassline-heavy "Know My Name." She sounds great in the first song, but after awhile her voice grows grating, and the "un-chill" music is alienating.
Fortunately, in the cuts between these songs, Nightmares on Wax (aka George Evelyn) sticks to what it does best: liquid, sunshiny electronic-funk. In these, Evelyn sounds right in his element, whether blending R&B beats with ambient sounds in "Humble," or the chillout techno of "Bleu My Mind." Basically, whenever the music and not the voice is the focus, things go well.
Nightmares on Wax first debuted as a duo, and then shrank to a one-man band, as it incorporated jazz, hip-hop and trip-hop into its sound. And "Mind Elevation" pretty much gives the people what they want and expect: Funky downtempo. This particular one goes a bit more on the side of funk and R&B, while still keeping a foot in the ethereal chillout.
The flaw of "Mind Elevation"? Trying to do too much. It strives to include a stronger dose of soul-funk, while adding in dub, downtempo, stoner electronica, R&B, and a handful of other influences. As a result, it feels like "Mind Elevation" lacks a central "sound," and is trying to cover all the bases and make everyone satisfied. Taken on a song-by-song basis, it fortunately manages to still be pretty strong.
Despite that lack of internal cohesion., the scattered "Mind Elevation" is still an enchanting mixture of beautiful downtempo and funk-R&B beats. A must-listen for fans of inventive chillout.
Nightmares on CD?.......2003-02-19
I love Nightmares on Wax... always some amazing stuff. Only problem is this CD has some really good stuff and some OK stuff... the begining of the CD seems weak and too mellow... it's only until you get halfway through when tracks like 70's 80's get's things flowing. Worth a buy to have in your chill collection but don't expect 100% out of this album... suprising since their other albums are pretty much at 100%.
i dig.......2003-02-12
Mind Elevation is my first taste of NOW, and it was definitely enough to make me want all their stuff. It's a great chill out album, though it has a little more R&B sound on some tracks than i'd prefer, but still that's only 2 or 3 outta 20. Easily worth the 18 bucks.
PLEASE LISTEN MORE THAN ONCE IF YOU'RE A REAL FAN!!!.......2003-01-04
okay, so YES! the first single "KNOW MY NAME" is arguably the worst song on the album....but, reviewers come on, did you really give this album a chance at all? i can't get enough of this album and play it constantly. "DATE WITH DESTINY" may just be N.O.W.'s greatest song ever!!! everyone that pooped on this incredible talent and album with a lame review should go get their hearing and brains checked! listen to tracks like "SAY SAY" & "THINKING OF OMARA" these songs are nothing but brilliant and instant N.O.W. classics. who cares if every song isn't a diamond with a few priceless gems on each album!!!!!! take a couple more listens, if you are a REAL fan, and behold the incredible talent. finally, "DATE WITH DESTINY" gets my vote for best pop song of 2002, hands down. and don't forget to wear your GREEN SWEATERS when you listen to this band because it's good for you silly.
!!!
the "Know My Name" video.......2003-01-04
I saw the video for "Know My Name" on a beta release of the monthly DVD magazine-to-be "Remote". Absolutely mind blowing. I dont bother writing reviews often but felt it necessary to put in a good word against all these other sub-par reviews. I have not listened to the whole record so I am limited to reviewing one song that got bashed so badly in these reviews. In the video the singer is pregant and wearing a homemade poor looking "Christian Dior" iron-on t-shirt and leather visor. Her and several other "real people" pass a microphone to each other as they subtly do there own thing(karate, basketball, track, soccer, etc.)against a black backround with a giant speaker. What I found to be important about this video was how "accessable" the people felt. One dancing girl was on the heavy side while being all the more attractive. Brilliant work I must say.

Experience the music of a 20th century original.......2001-01-26
Jehan Alain was a French organist and composer who was tragically killed while fighting the Germans near Saumur in 1940. At the time of his death, he was only 29 years old. Despite his youth, he left behind a significant body of organ music that could be mistaken for no other composer. This two CD set, running almost two and a half hours, includes all his published works, including some that have only recently come to light. Unlike many French composers who wrote for the organ on the vastest of canvases, many of Alain's works run five minutes or less.
One thing is for certain: Kevin Bowyer has technique to burn. He also gets wonderful sounds from the Marcussen organ at Tonbridge School. In fact, the recorded sound is excellent and atmospheric throughout. With one caveat, this is a wonderful introduction to the music of Alain. There is much here that is readily accessible to lovers of organ music including, but certainly not limited to, the two Chorals, Dorien and Phrygien; the two sets of variations, on Lucis Creator and on a theme by Clement Jannequin (although that attribution is in doubt); and the mystical pieces, Le Jardin Suspendu and the Postlude pour l'Office de Complies. There are also works that do not make their wonders readily apparent, but are well worth coming to know. Then, of course, there is Alain's most famous work, Litanies.
And it is Bowyer's performance of that piece about which I have reservations. He plays it breathtakingly fast--again, no question about technique--but the tempo is so rapid in places that, to me at least, the music sounds hectic. Repeated notes at the beginnings of phrases blur together, so that unless you knew that the notes were repeated, you'd hardly be able to tell. When he gives the music room to breathe, the performance is fine; if only he had done so throughout the piece! This performance, although perfectly acceptable, does not rise to the same level as the rest of this recording. And if you like your toccatas astonishingly fast, this performance will not disappoint.
So, if you only want Litanies and have no interest in Alain's other organ works, you'd be better off to purchase one of the many collections that include that piece. However, if you want a survey of the organ works of this original master, there is no need to hesitate.

Essential Pharoah.......2005-11-17
A gem because it is mostly live, recorded at a defunct club in L.A. for unconventional styles. You must accept that at any moment P. Sanders can go from serene to surreal. If you can hold on, he'll bring it full circle. A good introduction or addition to a fan.
great music, great musicians, lousy record company.......2005-09-30
The 5 stars is for the music - recorded live in 1973.
Elevation is one of Pharoas finest recordings containing some
of the best music from the period. With influences from Africa,
India and - something that is always at the heart of Sanders`
music -the blues. And not to forget - there is a lot of joy
and happiness here.
Unfortunately -what we get is not the complete picture. It is
understandable that the original lp only contained parts of the
performances. But a cd can contain close to 90 minutes of music
so it would have been possible for Impulse to put out a cd with
the complete tracks. But then of course - it is cheaper to put out
replicas.
Mosaic would do a better job with this great music.
A much better recording mangled by poor production choices........2005-09-28
A decent record marred by bizarre production choices, "Elevation" is primarily a live album, recorded in September of 1973, with one brief piece from a studio date shortly thereafter. Pharoah Sanders, heard here on tenor and soprano saxes as well as an array of percussion and vocal is joined on the live tracks by pianist Joe Bonner, bassist Calvin Hill (who doubles on tamboura on a few tracks), percussionists Lawrence Killian, John Blue, Jimmy Hopps and drummer Michael Carvin. The studio piece ("Greeting to Saud") adds violinist Michael White, inaudible vocalist Sedatrius Brown and percussionist Kenneth Nash with Carvin sitting out.
The four live tracks show remarkable diversity-- opener "Elevation" feels closely related to "A Love Supreme" and "The Creator Has a Masterplan" with Sanders stating a four note theme and providing lovely solos before catching fire and exploding. The piece begins to cool off a bit when Hill takes a stunning bass solo leading into a staggered theme statement. But just as the piece starts to cook again, it fades out! This is a theme that repeats throughout the remainder of the tracks, be it the West-Indian tinged "Ore-Se-Rere" (which truthfully doesn't sit well with me at all-- I find it to a be quite frankly a bit irritating) and lovely soprano-over-drone piece "Spiritual Blessing" (one of the real highlights of the record). Thankfully spared this editing is the South African-influenced Sander screech-fest "The Gathering" (where again after Sanders brings the piece to a boil simmers with a superb solo from Hill), but the damage is pretty much done-- the editing really ruined the experience for me.
The studio track is interesting enough-- with lovely piano statements over a tamboura drone and a literal wall of percussion before a moody violin enters. But as one would expect, just as the piece starts to develop, it fades out.
One piece of good news-- sonically it lives up to the usual Impulse! reissues, but I miss the days before GRP/Impulse! was bought by Verve and they used to actually put some effort into reissues-- this is the sort of piece that could have really benefitted from having tracks restored. Newcomers to Sanders should start with "Karma", it's his best known for a reason, this one is probably for fans only.

Album Description
Ho'okena's CD "Cool Elevation" is sure to take this talented quartet to new and greater heights. 7 of the 13 cuts are original compositions, written and arranged by Manu Boyd and Horace K. Dudoit III, and several reflect the beauty and elegance of Nu'uanu ("cool elevation"). Multiple "No Hoku Hanohano Award" winners, Ho'okena celebrates 17 years as a renaissance Hawaiian group of today, and they share their love for their homeland, culture and people through their harmonious and exhilarating music.

Fantastic.......2005-06-13
I can't stop listening to this album! I have found some Hawaiian music to be somewhat jarring and something I can only take in small doses. However, the lyrics of this album are profoundly beautiful and poetic, like Hawaii itself. The melodies on these songs are somewhat repetitive, yet somehow, the music is completely soothing yet upbeat. It puts me in a good mood in the morning, keeps me calm at work, and relaxes me in the evenings. I can't seem to be in a bad mood while listening to this!!!
This will put you on a plane to Hawaii!.......2005-03-07
Music from the islands changes all the time. In fact, as the politics of the islands change so does the music. The recovery of the traditional language and use of it in music has now come to be a trademark of the hawaiian sound. These boys do a great job of that. I was in Waikiki a couple months back and almost every hotel on the beach was playing parts of this album on their sound system. That may be good or bad to you depending on your politics but this album is truly a gold winner for a true taste of where music is Hawaii is at right now. Just relax, have a mai tai with this playing and you can almost place yourself at Kuhio Beach on a warm summer day!

Customer Reviews:
English violin music.......2004-06-08
Though Elgar belongs to the class of composers, like Mahler, Bruckner and Sibelius, known to the public today (and a mostly British public, save for the ubiquitous "Pomp and Circumstance" March No. 1) primarily through their large-scale orchestral works, he composed a considerable amount of music in other genres. The majority of the selections on this album date from the earlier stages of Elgar's career, when he taught violin and aspired to a performing career on that instrument. The exception, and the most substantial, though uneven, work on this CD, is the late Violin Sonata, Op. 82. The other repertoire is unambitious in length and variable in quality, the worth of a given piece being generally proportionate to its familiarity. Thus "Salut d'amour" and "Chanson du matin" retain their charm, though "La capricieuse" also shows that Elgar can be surprisingly adept at salon-style froth.
Although occasionally drifting sharp in high and loud passages, Lydia Mortkovich generally plays with elegance and sure technique. She and Julian Mitford, her able partner, strike some real sparks in the first two movements of the Violin Sonata. Overall they make persuasive advocates for this generally less familiar side of Elgar's art. It may be noted that the two Chansons, Op. 15, are more frequently recorded in their orchestral versions, so their inclusion in their original medium is something of a find.

exquisite.......2001-04-22
The death of Jehan-Ariste Alain, like all of the deaths caused by WWII, was a tragic, senseless one. A mere 29 years of age, Alain was quickly becoming a prominant composer of amazing versitility and life. One can only speculate what wonders he would have composed had be survived the dreaded war, but the output that we do have proves that he had extraordinary talent.
One of 2 volumes of his work released by the Naxos label, Vol. 1 showcases Alain's powerfully distinctive voice in a number of distinct formats, ranging from the one minute "le Jardin Suspendu," complete with an exotic atmosphere akin to contemporary Olivier Messiaen, the wonderfully precocious "Petite Piece," and his best known piece, "Litanies."
To me, it is is the fantastic organ playing of Eric Lebrun that brings Alain's already amazing pieces to greater life. His choice of the Cavaille-Coll organ of the Church of St-Antoine des Quinze-Vingts in Paris was the ideal one for these pieces. Alain meant for his pieces to be played on just such an organ, so one can hear the majesty of Alain and the organ mingling beautifully, with the highly competent Lebrun in command. There is no doubt that Lebrun is attuned to what Alain meant for the pieces to sound like. Listen to his rendition of the Gregorian-esque "Ballade en Mode Phrygien" and feel the shivers go down your spine.
The 2 cd set is a masterful look at one of the greatest 20th century composers that should have been, and with it being a Naxos release, the price is never a factor. Invest the few dollars and hear one of the great lps of organ music you will likely ever hear. It is well worth it.
An extremely important release.......2001-01-24
Paul Dukas, of "The Sorceror's Apprentice" fame, was one of the finest composition tutors of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Amongst his pupils were three significant organists: Messiaen - who is now seen as one of the most influential figures of the entire twentieth century; Langlais - who has become somewhat less prominent than Messiaen but was certainly no less important as a composer; and Alain - equally promising as a composer, but killed during military service in 1940 by a Nazi bomb blast. He was just 29 years of age.
It could be said of that tragedy that it robbed us of a great twentieth century composer. However, Alain lived and worked long enough to produce a large corpus of organ music, remarkably mature in style and full of contrasts, and as this two-disc series shows, though his life was cut so brutally short, it was by no means a waste of life.
That Alain shared a class with Messiaen and Langlais seems clear to me on listening to some of the music in this volume. The special harmonic techniques and exotic interests of Messiaen might perhaps be detected in "Le Jardin suspendu" or "Deux Danses a Agni Yavishta" (the first of which is barely a minute long); "Litanies" (one of his better known legacies) and "Variations sur un theme de Clement Janequin" bear testimony to an interest in ancient French musical ideas and traditions, shared by Langlais. Like both, Alain seems to have inherited a strong gift for melody and how best to accompany it; witness the simply delicious "Petite Piece" (track 2), the more extended "Deuxieme Fantasie" or the chorales "Cistercian" and "Phrygien," exquisitely crafted miniatures that harbour some truly innovate musical thinking behind their seemingly pedestrian titles. Alain was obviously a man of clear religious conviction, yet in writing for organ he also catered for the more secular side of performing, as can be seen in the "Deux Preludes Profanes," "Ballade en mode Phrygien" which is derived, Langlais-esque, from Gregorian chant and is thus on the cusp between liturgical and non-liturgical music, or the three-movement "Suite" that closes this programme.
This is music of great quality: well formed, interesting and deserving of a wide audience. Here, it is beautifully performed by Eric Lebrun, himself a pupil of the composer's organ-playing relative, Marie-Claire Alain. Seated at a genuine French Cavaille-Coll organ - the type of instrument for which the music for written - he delivers a beautiful performance: sensitive, brilliantly accurate and wholly communicative. With the Naxos budget price, this disc is certainly hard to resist, particularly for organists like myself!
A thoroughly enjoyable, wholeheartedly recommended CD! Let's hope that it (and its companion volume) will serve to redress the neglect suffered by this music, and this composer, amongst various circles of music-making.
