With Gypsy in My Soul, Connie Evingson goes from cool Beatles to hot jazz. As a follow-up to her Let It Be Jazz, Evingson pays tribute to one of the most distinctive and wonderful sounds in jazz history, the French hot clubs of guitarist Django Reinhardt in the 1930s and '40s. Assisting her are three different bands, Parisota Hot Club and Clearwater Hot Club from her Minnesota home and Pearl Django from Seattle. All have the guitar-led sound just like Django Reinhardt, while Clearwater and Pearl Django add the violin that also helped make the Django sound distinctive (in his case, most famously by Stephane Grappelli). (Parisota substitutes a clarinet, which was a lesser-known aspect of the Django sound.) The groups' sound is also supplemented by accordion (Dan Chouinard and Patrick Harrison), vibes (Susan Pascal), and other instruments. Gypsy in My Soul isn't a note-by-note re-creation: Django didn't use vocals (Evingson provides lyrics to his "Anouman" music for "Django's Premonition" and she sings Susannah McCorkle's lyrics to his "Nuages"), and though he did perform American standards, those wouldn't have included Sting's "Until" or the Nat "King" Cole hit "Nature Boy." But it's a fun listen on its own terms, and might open up a new audience for Django. --David Horiuchi

This CD features tunes typical of the genre ("Caravan", "Night and Day", "I'm Confessin"), Django originals ("Nuages", "Anouman"), and some unusual offerings by Sting ("Until") and Dizzy Gillespie ("Dizzy Atmosphere").

Connie Evingson has never sounded better in this tasty collection of gypsy infused tunes. Backed by three different groups, this unapologitically romantic effort is full of infectious rhythms and solos. Whether it is a song aimed at the heart or the feet, Gypsy in my Soul will lift your spirits. Makes you want to grab your Gitanes and head for a late night cafe.

PAY ATTENTION HIGH PRICE USED COPY!!!.......2007-04-22

G. Duke write to me some months ago: they will be reprinted soon (during 2007) in a 5 cds box set in Europe... I'm not G.Duke, I'm not the label that should re-print them, so I coulod be wrong, ...but during the last mounths 7 used copies of the 3cd box set sudden appeared on amazon, all from sellers with a low number of items sold (private?), that, perhaps, know that their copies will soon have low value... I decided to wait before buying my copy...

Why oh why is this CD out of print?I've had to hunt down all
of Duke's MPS albums as a result but if you can find this and your a George Duke fan or fan-in training LOOK FOR THIS!It's a whole other side of Duke marred by mind boggling veers into the
avante garde on Frank Zappa's "Echidna's Arf" and the psychedelic "Mashuu" and "Giantchild Within Us-Ego".Of course he also turns out some lovely ballads like "Someday","Seeing You","Fools" and the instrumental "Dawn".On the funk-fusion front GD also pulls out the monster "Don't Be Shy","For Love (I Come Your Friend)" and the mighty instrumental "Back To Where We Never Left" in addition to stabs at hard rock in "Rokkinrowl-I Don't Know", Brazillian music on "Malibu" and "Liberated Fantasies" and simple 12-bar blues on "I Love The Blues,She Heard My Cry".It's clear that Duke's MPS years was a time he devoted to persuing his artistic visions rather then chasing trends in music and these albums mark that period well.But hold on-this isn't the HALF of it!If you still have a turntable seek out the vinyl only releases of "Feel" and "Faces In Refection" (from this same period) and the tripped out soul jazz of 1970's 'Save The Country',all of whitch are excellent and all of whitch are worth getting.Also mandatory is the recent Wounded Bird CD of 'The 1976 Solo Keyboard Album' whitch showcases Duke's final efforts for MPS as re-mixed years later at his Epic studios but very true to this era of music making.Overall this will come off as one of your most valuable investments if you find it.

3 of these albums on wax and searched for a long time for these with
no success.So i was thrilled to see this set with all 3.

Can't believe I found this!.......1999-01-19

It was back in 1974 (I was a mere pup), late at night and I was listening to "Collette Vaughn the Night Bird Show" on the radio. She was deep into, RTF, Chick, Clark, Miles, Cobham, etc.. Anyway, I heard this haunting cut, "Seeing You" and thought "can heaven get any sweeter?" Later I heard "Sister Serene" and realized that this George Duke is somthing I got to have.

Well, I didn't make good on my desire then (errors of youth), and paid a severe price because I couldn't find it anywhere a few years later. In the last 20 years I have had more of my share of "kids" working in music stores that look at me like I am some weird-do from the seventies still high.

So I take a chance on Amazon and struck GOLD! "Liberated Fantasies" hooked me on the dukey stick for life and now I can take a lick from original stick. Life is great... and so is this compliation!

Oscar and Orchestra. Very Beautiful.......2005-08-18

These 2 CDs contains the songs of 3 long-plays. My father had all of them. The first is named Motions and Emotions, the second I need to check (the LPs are in my father's house) but I think it was Oscar's Choice. The third is named Tristeza. The first one (Motions and Emotions LP) contains singular recordings (Oscar and Orchestra) that prove the enormous versatility of Oscar. Very beautiful. Listen for example Sunny song sample at Amazon.
