5 out of 5 stars one of the best albums of all time.......2006-10-03

I am a dj whose spun this album all over the world - and it works everywhere!

4 out of 5 stars Billy Bubbles at the top of his game.......2005-05-18

I picked up this CD over ten years ago when I was still in college and I still regularly listen to it today. Moody electronica with some really fine drum work and WO's unique synthesizer palette.

His follow-up "Strange Cargo 4: Hinterland" is also excellent. All this before he got snapped up by Madonna...

For WO fans, remember this line? "You have discovered many things, but the shortcut through the labyrinth is not among them."

I finally figured out what this sampled interlude was (I think it's at the beginning of "Best Friend, Paranoia"?); it's a line spoken by the old monk in the movie "The Name of the Rose".

5 out of 5 stars Third time's the charm..........2003-02-12

After two previous "Strange Cargo" albums, William Orbit finally gets it right; while the previous two were haphazard and uneven, William Orbit seems to have found the right groove with this one. The songs on this CD never get above a dull roar - they are all rather quiet and mellow, and even the more uptempo tracks inspire more of a thoughtful groove than an all-out dance.

3 out of 5 stars Soft Ambience in Jeane Micheal Jarre's Style.......2001-12-29

William Orbit's music is quite melodic in contrast with other popular electronic artists who mostly focus on beat and rhythm. This is a clear indication that melody is still and fashion and will probably always be in fashion. However, Orbit's music, especially in "Strange Cargo" is too soft and tender to be truly moving- the energy of beat is lacking, albeit, the pacifying and relaxing effect is present.
True fans of electronic music must remember Jean Michael Jarre with his ground-braking synthesizer tracks and spectacular shows. William Orbit follows in his tracks and many of his sounds and overall ambient feel resemble some of the earlier Jean Michael Jarre tracks. If you are looking for more energetic, mood boosting music, you should also check out Van Dyk, Oakenfold, and maybe UltraMax Music. William Orbit have mastered the new age, and this is unquestionable. But the true dance music leads another way.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the electronic master.......2001-10-06

What James Brown is to soul and Bob Dylan is to folk, William Orbit is to the electronic genre. I have found no one to match his melodic, fluid style of new age, with the energy and beat of a dance mix. No two tracks sound the same, and Strange Cargo III is the best of all his albums. Maybe that's why Madonna insisted that he produce her most successful album ever. And what a difference it made.

Orbit has taken the roots laid down by Tangerine Dream and has refined them to a point where he is both ethereal and melodic, hypnotic and awake, soothing and dance-inducing. What a talent.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Several Worlds.......2000-04-07

Perhaps because he has not recorded soundtracks for the right films, or perhaps because he doesn't have the right kind of relationship with Eno, commercial success as a musician and composer eluded William Orbit until Ray of Light was released, which he produced, and from the sounds of it, wrote for Madonna. But ten years ago, the relatively unknown Orbit was doing what he does today, pushing available technology to its natural limits in order to fuse aural textures and harmonies to create rich soundscapes for his listener. In an interview somewhere, Orbit commented that he approaches writing each piece with the hope not that it will reach the top of the charts and then sink into oblivion but will withstand the test of time and be listenable to future generations - a high call to order for an electronic artist. In this disk, Orbit skillfully incorporates latin rythm and instrumentation with "ambient" themes to create a seamless disc that at times relaxingly transports the listener to soothing tropical vistas and others energizes with almost funky island rythms and grooves. Electronic music lovers will marvel at the sheer musicality of the disk and its ability to sound fresh and new unlike so many quaint recordings by Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Kitaro and the like, and others will find the music more accessible than the abstract music of Eno, but not lacking in complexity or sophistication.

5 out of 5 stars What?.......1999-12-04

What on earth is Martin Aston yabbering on about up there? Strange Cargo2 was released in 1990 and anyone who knows their shamrocks from their doves will know acid house was dead and buried by the time D-mob's We Call it Acieed hit in 1988. This is a fantastic album, all William's solo albums are, and to say this album is 10 years old it sounds as current as anything out there today and has none of those dated DX7 sounds of a Miami vice track. When I first heard this in 1990 it was the production that blew me away, no one can create space around sounds like Mr. Orbit, if you want to know why Madge needs this man to stay upfront, give this album a listen.

4 out of 5 stars Proto-Ambient Classic........2002-04-11

Most people hadn't even heard of 'ambient' when this album came out. I first bought it on vinyl when it came out on the IRS NoSpeak label which was dedicated to instrumental music (other releases included Billy Currie and Stewart Copeland). At the time it was a novel idea. Not many people were making instrumental music. Nor had the popularity of electronc music in general surged to the proportions it enjoys today. There are moments of sheer brilliance on this album. Orbit chose not to craft his sound as discreetly as Eno's but instead used the addition of electric guitar solos, drums and lots of keyboards. What you got was a sort of spaceman-crime fighter soundtrack. Don't forget, Miami Vice was still on TV when this bad boy came out and people thought Jan Hammer was a genius! The dance beats that permeated the later Strange Cargo releases didn't appear on this album because no one at the time had thought to mix the elements. Moby and the Orb still had yet to appear! Given that, this album made a great contribution to the thriving electronic scene we enjoy today. Pick it up now, enjoy and file under proto-ambient.

2 out of 5 stars This is rather dull..........2000-05-18

After having heard Strange Cargo III, I thought I should try out the original Strange Cargo, but it is surprisingly mediocre. It makes good background music (i.e. elevator music). It's just too understated, not *out there* enough. Don't buy this if you're hoping for the more recent William Orbit sound.

4 out of 5 stars Solid early electronica.......2000-02-26

The 1st Strange Cargo CD is a very satisfying varied mix of electronic styles, beats with some good old fashioned electric guitars (well, at least that's what they sound like). Some of it sounds like dramatic background music from a spy flick, some is slow, some is fast, the themes tend to develop in interesting lines.

Despite what the Amazon reviewer says, this is not soulless machine music. If you are not fond of synths & sequencers, this won't work for you, but you don't have to be a tech-geek to like this stuff. I think it is easily the most interesting and varied of Orbit's Strange Cargo series, although all three have their own merits.

5 out of 5 stars Defying the editorial review.......2000-02-15

Contrary to the editorial review (are you guys trying to sell this album or what?), I found Strange Cargo to be absolutely brilliant. Along with other William Orbit projects, this album soars. The human touch is the layering and building of the arrangement of each track. Well thought out and constructed, Strange Cargo is an example of the power of technology in music and a landmark effort in this genre.

5 out of 5 stars Strange Cargo by William Orbit...........1998-12-31

The Strange Cargo series by William Orbit is by any means wonderful music. This particular album is the first of the series. It's got fast rhythms and some slow ones, so it's going to meet the varying tastes of different listeners. If you have questions or doubts about buying this album, get William Orbit, The Best of Strange Cargos. Best of Strange Cargos is a compilation of songs from his 4 cd series, which includes 4 songs from the first Strange Cargo album. The Strange Cargo series wil provide hours of listening enjoyment to all who purchase this album. I recommend it with flying colors and hope you enjoy it too.

5 out of 5 stars Hardly available.......2005-03-09

This has alawys been one of my favorite William Orbit Albums. I owned Strange Cargo I, II, and III, as well as Hinterland. About two years ago, all my CD's got stolen. That sucked... but as I rebuilt my collection, thanks to insurance money, I made my decisions carefully. When it finally came to William Orbit, I stuck with II and Hinterland. I absolutely respect and love every track on Hinterland. A couple years later, I have rebuilt the collection I decided needed to be rebuilt. I now own every Orbit album, as well as every Orton album In short, Hinterland is pretty cool and holds many tracks that should be recognized.

3 out of 5 stars Eh.........2003-03-26

I bought this album after hearing Orbit's genius in his Pieces in a Modern Style album, his incredibly brilliant work with Madonna, and the other production he did with other artists (U2, Melanie C, All Saints). This album, however, is not nearly as sonically unique as I thought. Tracks 2 and 3 stand out as great songs, but the rest is just okay. It's not a bad album by any means, just nothing special.

5 out of 5 stars Why isn't this album available in the USA?.......2003-01-28

This is the best of the Strange Cargo series. I recommend it. Amazon UK has it.

5 out of 5 stars One of William's best..........2002-08-06

I have Strange Cargo 2, 3 and best of and the *disappointing* Pieces In A Modern Style. This is my favorite out of all of them. It's very upbeat and energetic. Montauk Point kicks my butt every time, and I love the guitar work on El Ninjo. Just amazing electronic music here, really. If you can find this in stores, it's well worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Quite simply...the best LP i have ever purchased........1999-06-16

If i could say anything more about this LP...i dont think i could stop. It is the creation upon which i base all other musical journeys. A good friend of mine introduced me to William Orbits music a few years ago...and i just cant get enough of it. I sure wish i knew where she was, because we shared this music together as we did great ideas and heart-felt stories. I have had this LP since its release...and i have replaced it twice already. Loaning it to friends..and just plain ol' wearing it out seems to be the case. If i could only own one CD, it would truly be this one. I cant imagine what William Orbit could do to top this rythmical journey into the musical depths of space...but what ever it is...when ever it comes...it will become another treasure to cherish.

5 out of 5 stars An underappreciated sonic genius.......2004-12-29

I remember the first time I listened to Torch Song's records, and being completely hypnotized with the production and Laurie Mayer's haunting vocals. Orbit since then has been a favorite of many artists for production and remix work. He did some fantastic music for Joe Frank In The Dark. With this trio he creates a number of electro-chillout / spark-wired atmospheres. A lot of this could easily double as an alternate Blade Runner-type soundtrack. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Innovative, unique new age music.......2007-04-14

The music on this CD is partly created by homemade instruments fabricated from old oxygen tanks, coffee cans, flour sifters and other found objects. Some other unique instruments such as Thai wooden bells and Chinese cymbals are present as well, along with synthesizers, sax, and guitars. The best track here, and also the most melodic, is "Flying Hearts," an upbeat composition that got lots of airplay on Galactic Radio's easy listening channel in the early 90s.

If you're at all into homemade instruments, or just are looking for new age that is somewhat different than most of what's out there, check this out.

5 out of 5 stars More of the same great stuff........2006-02-16

If you liked "Safety in Numbers" I would be surprised if you didn't enjoy "Strange Cargo" as well. The musical style and instrumentation are very similar, without repeating the other work or being derivative. I really wish he did more releases of his work. Check out William Orbit as well.

4 out of 5 stars Very Very Pleasant.......2005-03-26

Pleasant (but not sappy), creative (but not self-indulgant), and compelling (but far from New Age). It's not the agressive, cutting-edge percussion from his Laurie Anderson work. But it is a It's just right for a modern dance peice. Great atmospheric stuff.

1 out of 5 stars great disapointment.......2003-05-26

For those who admire Van Tieghem's work with Laurie Anderson or have viewed his video dancing and playing with kitchenware, this CD is a great disapointment. Van Tiegem music is vulgar and uninteresting, sounding like a GRM jazzfusion production. Percussion is subdued in a pool of sounds, most of them, boring.

3 out of 5 stars Arena rock from punks.......2006-02-07

Interest in Duane Denison's angular guitar brilliance led me to this album. Surprisingly, it is far more poppy than any of his subsequent bands (the Jesus Lizard, Tomahawk, DK3, etc.). Sounds pretty good, with lots of space between the instruments, big drums, clear vocals. And that is actually it's failure. With harsher edges and more buried, smoggy sound, it would (counter-intuitively) be a more gripping album. Nothing at all wrong with the songwriting or the delivery, just incorrectly produced. Denison's guitar succeeds the most when it has to wrestle it's way out of a morass -- here it is crystalline and clinical.

Atrocious cover art, too.

If you are looking for more energetic, mood boosting music, you should also check out Van Dyk, Oakenfold, and maybe UltraMax Music.
