Customer Reviews:
Great album with acoustic vibe.......2007-03-30
The album starts with the touching "Wait For Jane," peaks with the incredible "Cindy," then rides off into the sunset with "Andy Climb Down." The album has a gripping acoustic vibe that blends triumphantly with Stephen O'Reilly's vocals. A powerful performance without raucous instrumentals that is worth a listen.
Best album from the band.......2007-01-10
This is by far the best album by Tammany Hall NYC. I could do a review of each track, but what's the point? Every review would be "awesome track".
If you've heard some of their other work, or more commonly, if you've heard some tammany on the tv show Scrubs, then this is definitely an album you want
acoustic perfection.......2006-03-31
I first heard the song "Wait For Jane" when it was used as "Wait For You" in an HBO promo for their Sunday Night lineup back in 2002. I immediately had to know who sang that song. My research led me to Tammany Hall NYC. I ordered the CD right away since it was only available on their website at the time. I was not disappointed. This disc is solid from beginning to end.
"Always On Sunday" was another song that HBO used, I believe, and it is simply amazing. I can't say enough about these guys, how they are still flying under the radar is beyond me.
I give this CD 5 stars because of the "turd factor". The "turd factor" score here is 0. Which is good. A turd is a song that is so unlistenable that it is a must skip. You can enjoy this CD from beginning to end and throw the CD remote away and let it play.
My search for their music has definitely paid off, this CD is still in my regular rotation 4 years after buying it.
Had given up on music until..........2003-03-22
Tammany Hall NYC is incredible. I own over 800 CDs and for the past 6 months haven't bought a single piece of music because nothing out there was of interest to me. Until, I heard this band on HBO. It took forever for me to figure out who they were. I bought their album immediately and it is all I listen to. They have instantly become one of my favorite bands. Like other reviewers have written, every song can stand alone, not one song sounds like the next. The music is unlike any I've ever heard before. I highly recommend this album if you're looking for something that you didn't believe was even out there.
Amazing!.......2002-11-10
I absolutely LOVE this band. This is the kind of music that you not only hear but feel. To the individual who what wondering about what song was on the HBO commercial, it is called Waiting For You, which is a remake of Waiting For Jane. The entire song is the same except they replaced Jane with You in the title and lyrics. Either version is great. I only hope more people come to learn about this band.

Customer Reviews:
Nothing, I ask for nothing..........2007-08-03
This album, released in the last days of vinyl that preceded the launching of the CD, got lost in that shuffle (thank you, Ronzo, for turning me on to it). Buy it now, it is top-notch English "prog-pop" or new wave/punk hybrid, whatever you want to call it. The song "Wish" (nothing, I'd give up nothing) is the best. Keith Levene (Public Image Ltd.) is the guitarist here; there's a nice guitar instrumental included. It sounds Bowie-like in the vocal department. This band kicks! Great stuff. One of my "little gems" in the collection.
best record ever...........2007-04-21
or the best record ever that features PIL guitarist Keith Levine on "aquarium" guitar. I've been looking for this on CD for twenty years. Hooray...today is a good day...
Stand out new wave synth pop from the early years.......2007-02-16
I see why this unknown group has been noted as being pioneers in the new wave scene. I bought this disc for "thrash", which was played on my local new wave station years ago. But the entire album features smart use of keyboards and guitars to create wonderfully melodic new wave. Many artists from 1979 to 1980 had a habit of making one good new wave song with keyboards, but when you bought their entire album, they didn't sustain that pop sensibility, but instead gave us a bunch of experimental noise. Cowboys International blends the best sounds of Split Enz, Gary Numan, Psychedelic Furs, and even hints at the guitar/synth marriage of groups like a Flock of Seagulls two years later. As his been claimed for this group, they definitely bridge the gap between the punk era and the new romantic era.
Remarkable album from a band you never heard of.......2004-08-17
I first heard this album sometime around 1979/1980. I bought it because Ken Lockie - the main force behind Cowboys International - was associated with Public Image LTD. - and at the time I was totally obsessed with PIL.
When I bought this album I was surprised by the popness (is there such a word?) of the material. It was both dreamy, beautiful, dance, and had a strong relationship with David Bowie - with respect to "Low," "Heroes," & "Lodger." Like those records it used something old to advance to a new world.
I recently bought the album after so many years of not hearing it - and it still sounds fresh and inticing as when I first heard it.
Now if they release the Ken Lockie solo album - that would be something!
Buy Cowboys International because it's totally underrated and really, it's a pop masterpiece!

Bonito CD.......2007-04-09
I order the cd based in the two reviews I read in Amazon. I have to say my clients love it and I share their opinion.
Intoxicating!.......2007-03-22
When I first listened to this CD, it did very little for me. I was expecting something a bit less gentle/subtle.
But now -- about a year later -- it has become part of my nightly ritual. I start it up and let it carry me away from the day's stress and aggravations. It is really good for getting into that meditative place that feels so wonderful after a busy day.
Sometimes I will even wake up in the middle of the night and start it playing so that it fills the place with beautiful sound.
I will be looking for more compilations like this one and hope the collaborators responsible for this will be working on more recordings.
remasterpiece pure delight .......2004-11-19
I have listen to this fantastic album many times now and I have to say it is a wonderful cd to relax too. My favourite track is track 8 I would recomend this cd to anyone even if you dont normaly like classical music. I congratulate this duo and would love to see this remasterpiece performed live at the Royal Albert Hall...

Excellent.......2006-05-13
This artist is exceptional. He creates deep trance and keeps you there throughout his recording. One can put this album on and it seems like 5 minutes when actually an hour has gone by. I also have his other CD and both are outstanding. I have a lot of Tibetan bowl recordings and this is light years ahead of the rest.

Luciano Berio has always looked at his Sequenzas as building blocks among his other compositions. These solo works, sometimes written for specific performers, exist as elements of other, larger works or as platforms upon which he's built extensive structures. This three-CD set is the first to collect all Berio's Sequenzas, and the performances are peerless.
Berio's writing is, of course, unconventional, feeding off serialism and making complexity sound friendly. Sophie Cherrer's leaping flute on Sequenza I (1958) finds dozens of ways not to shriek, as does Gabrielle Cassone's Sequenza X for trumpet. There are two world-premiere recordings: Pascal Gallois's Sequenza XII for bassoon and Teodoro Anzellotti's Sequenza XIII for accordion (both 1995). Here Anzellotti conjures his playful 1998 recording, Satie on Accordion.
Berio envisions these works as suggestive of polyphony in their architecture and impact, which is to say that the aggressive juxtapositions within a solo work fool the ear into believing that the soloist is a small ensemble. The melodies get multiplied, from initial statements into transfigurations and harmonic variations, making the pieces at once tremendously complex and demanding but also totally inviting. The constancy of these 13 works is evidenced by two of the harmonically richest performances, Benny Sluchin's Sequenza V for trombone (1965, originally composed for Stuart Dempster) and Eliot Fisk's Sequenza XI for guitar (1987-88). The dialogue between density and pinpoint nodes remains a thematic constant, rendered almost in parallel on the various instruments. This is a dynamic, vital document of 20th-century music, one that shouldn't be missed. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Great........2005-07-25
Written between 1958 and 1995, the Sequenzas are a kind of encyclopedia of 20th Century instrumental writing; Berio uses every kind of extended technique imaginable to produce a wide range of colors and textures. He obviously knows these instruments inside and out, writing works of great complexity and intricacy that also remain natural to their respective instruments. This does not mean that he does not challenge the prevailing notion of what is "natural." In his notes for the Sequenza II for Harp, Berio complains that "French 'impressionism' has left us with a rather limited vision of the harp, as if its most obvious characteristic were that of lending itself to the attentions of loosely robed girls with long blonde tresses, capable of drawing from it nothing more than seductive glissandi. But the harp also has another harder, stronger, more aggresive face." It must be said that Berio tends to illuminate the "aggresive face" of many of the instruments. The Sequenzas for violin and viola in particular dispell the notion that the most natural thing for them is to imitate the voice. Berio has a more unique vision of the instruments' capabilities.
The Ensemble InterContemporain is the creme de la creme of modern music groups. Listening to Christopher Desjardins shred in the Sequenza VI for Viola is particularly satisfying. He plays with as much passion as he does skill, bringing out the jarring shifts in mood suggested by the Edoardo Sanguinetti verse that accomanpanies the work: "my capricious fury was once your livid calm / my song will be your very slow silence." His is of course only one of many virtuoso performances in the set. The discs on the whole make a strong case for the composer, and, more generally, for the cause of modern music.

Incredible recordings of great works of the 20th century........2000-08-23
This recording marks a triumphant feat in recording history. These works for solo instruments are recorded by some of the persons to whom they were written. Ensemble InterContemporain has some of the best musicians of avant guard music in the world. These works display extended instrumental techniques that have shaped the course of 20th century music by all other composers in the same school. My hope is that Ensemble InterContemporain will record the companion works such as the Chemins series and Corale and the other works that are based on some of these works (Berio uses the Sequenzas as solo material with various instruments added to the soundscape which he calls adding layers to the onion.) This CD set is a must have for all who love contempoary music or want a good jumping off point atart enjoying this great music.
Not everything here is "genius".......2000-08-09
Despite what the other reviews will have you believe, not every piece in this box set is as phenomenal as pieces like the soprano or trombone Sequenza.
Berio has written a lot of incredible music, but he's also written a lot of really terrible music (like "Folk Songs", for instance). There are some incredible pieces on these 3 CDs but the majority are easily forgettable and, at times, quite boring. The virtuosity of playing, while technically flawless, often comes off as flat and undynamic... This is a fault of the pieces, not the performers.
This is a great collection for Berio completists, but the highlights of the box set are available in other recordings with the original performers (i.e. Vinko Globokar, Cathy Berberian, etc.) Seek those out and save yourself some money.
Great collection of hard-to-find music.......1999-11-24
These works are difficult to collect individually, and this was the first recording of Sequenza XII for Bassoon and Sequenza XIII for Accordion.
Unfortunately, Sequenza VIIb for Soprano Saxophone (1993) was omitted. It is available on BIS CD-640 "The Solitary Saxophone" by Claude Delangle.
I prefer Christian Lindberg's renditions of Sequenza V for Trombone, as found on BIS CD-258 "The Virtuoso Trombone" and CD-388 "The Solitary Trombone (they're different performances). He has perfected the playing-while-singing multiphonic effect, using it on several other pieces like Sandstrom's "Motorbike Concerto."

A rarely achieved perfection in serenity - Michael Hoppé.......2007-06-28
As Michael Hoppé (Grammy nominated artist) states this album is a great achievement in ambient music. It is healing, soothing, perfect for massage, Reiki and other purposes. Lloyd Barde from Backroads says: "The Music of RESONANCE takes on visual qualities and otherworldly realms with a grace and ease that is easy to be with, and can be revisited often." My personal experience is listening to RESONANCE gives me a feeling of peace and tranquility and the state of being One with the Universe.
Expected great massage type relaxation music.......2007-02-07
I wouldn't recommend purchasing this unless you listen to all tracks first.
I was not pleased with the depth or complexity of the music. Being a Reiki Master and Pranic Healer and Polarity Therapist, I've purchased quite a few albums over the years. This is on my, "sell on ebay" list.
It doesn't quite transform or take one on a journey or inspire the imagination. I found Halpern, Master Charles, and some of the others much better and more appropriate for my needs. I am definately disappointed.
mediated state.......2006-12-21
This is my favorite ambient/synth album to massage with. If you are a massage therapist then you know that music can affect your client. Resonance will relax and put your clients in mediated state. This album will do that every time! Doucet and Miraz really complement each of very well. At times I can't even tell who is playing. It's like both of their playing just melts together as one. If you like ambient music then you must buy Resonance.
Maximum Lush!.......2002-05-29
Resonance now takes the place of Brian Eno and Harold Budd's "The Pearl" as my favorite ambient/synth album. Doucet and Miraz' playing complement each other beautifully. As anyone who has ever recorded synthesizer knows, the key to success is two-fold: First, the sounds themselves must be top-notch. There are a lot of cheezy synth patches in the world, and happily, none of them find their way onto this album. Secondly, since synthesizers are potentially cold and mechanical sounding, the PLAYING has to be expressive and sensitive. Again, Doucet and Miraz do not disappoint. My favorite track is the opening "Dancing Shadows" which features a haunting melody played on what I believe is a vintage Moog synthesizer, or a darn-good imitation thereof.
As for the mood, I would say that in a word, Resonance is REASSURING. Although it definitely has all the best features of space music, for me, there is just enough melodic/harmonic content to keep me in my body, and ultimately, after a few tracks, I end up feeling like all is well after all. This one is staying in my rotation for a long time to come.
I suggest you buy it. Listen to Resonance in the morning, and add a little bliss to your whole day.
