Editorial Reviews
MA New Age Voice Magazine FIRST SPINS, December 1, 2000
Multiple listenings to this relaxing, timeless album only continues to delight and uplift, demonstrating Farr's sophisticated reach.

Product Description
Through rich soundscapes and thoughtful solos, composer and keyboardist Nick Farr takes you to farther realms of his creative imagination. This wonderful work includes twelve original songs which sample his writing styles and creativity. The songs blend genres of classical, jazz and new age into a beautiful auditory experience. Farther is as thoughtful as it is exciting and is enjoyed by all who listen. Farther debuted at # 3 on the New Age Voice Airwaves chart in October 2000 and moved up to the respectable # 1 position for November. It remained in the Top 40 for six months on Top 20 radio lists well into 2002. As well, Farther has been used in television as theme and background music—a setting which is well-suited for the composer's wide range of styles.

Josh Groban fans who caught the singer's 2004 Closer tour would no doubt take note of Lucia Micarelli, who was the violinist and concertmaster for Groban. Like her boss, who also is executive producer of Music From A Farther Room, Micarelli is a young, attractive, and talented player who has the classical training, but who is also enchanted with pop music. Also like her boss, her strain of classical crossover works thanks to tasteful accompaniment, in this case from arranger/composer Paul Schwartz. The smartly chosen program of material comes from such varied catalogs as David Bowie and Rogers and Hart. Micarelli's playing is emotional without being overreaching, assertive when called upon, and nuanced. When she does go over-the-top pop on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," it's brief but fun; when she navigates Piazzolla's "Oblivion" she draws upon the song's passion more than its technical requisites. This is a debut with likeable pizzazz, coming in a genre not often enough known for it. -- Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

For anyone who has attended Josh Groban's phenomenal live show, you will have undoubtedly had the pleasure of seeing and hearing his lead violinist, Lucia Micarelli. Lucia came to Josh's tour after appearing with the Trans- Siberian Orchestra playing arenas across the U.S. in 2003. With the close of the second leg of Josh's tour, Lucia is recording her debut album in New York and London with producer Paul Schwartz. Musical selections will range from the works of composers Ravel and Ennio Morricone to David Bowie.

5 out of 5 stars Nice CD.......2007-07-15

This is one of my favorite CDs in my collection. I saw her play in person, and Live is much, much better then the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Music from a Farther Room.......2007-05-22

I heard Lucia Micarelli during a 2007 Josh Groban concert. Her live solo performance in addition to her backgrounds for Groban were mesmerizing. I purchased this album to see if it was as enjoyable as her live work, and I was not disappointed. Micarelli performs a good mix of classical and pop pieces. My favorite tracks on the album are Smarkland, Meditation, Lady Grinning Soul, Portrait, and Nocturne/Bohemian Rhapsody.

5 out of 5 stars relaxation.......2007-05-13

This CD is very well done. I was familiar with old favorites and delighted with new songs. I would like to hear more of the rock songs preformed by her. I think she's got a lot of talent and could possibly do well with the rock songs on a future album.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2007-05-07

Lucia has power in her playing. I think that she shouldn't be allowed to play violin this good. Her raw talent is conveyed in every song. She doesn't just stick to classical, as the accompaniment music isn't just strings. I wished she had played a little more in Bohemian Rhapsody. I saw her in concert with Josh Groban and I knew I had to purchase this CD. Lucia is an inspiration and her love for the violin cannot be contained.

5 out of 5 stars Talented violinist.......2007-03-29

When I saw and heard Lucia Micarelli perform with Josh Groban at a recent concert, I was so impressed with her talent, that I immediately went online to see what music of hers was available. Every item on her CD is wonderful, and I'm looking forward to her next CD.

4 out of 5 stars october project second cd still good but not like the 1 cd.......2007-01-11

No questions the first cd is the best but the second takes some credit also.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2006-01-15

I bought it 60% off of $3 so really didn't lose that much. It's a good thing too. Although the music is good and the girl has a good voice, her voice does not work with the music that they play. She'd be much better off doing a solo project with the music that can play alongside her. It's starts sounding like a rock band and then comes in her voice, which doesn't work for rock at all. I'm not saying that "nobody in their right mind would like this cd", I just didn't really like the combination they had.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, lush and lyrical, but should be sold with prozac.......2005-12-27

I agree with all the positives that have been said about this undeniably beautiful album, but it is overwraught with apocalyptic neurosis. A few examples: "The world is falling apart / He's getting older / And there's a funeral in his heart;" "...where God has no image and man finds no grace;" "What dark time is coming / What dark time is here / The prophet emerges / In garments of fear." And on like that.
So, while lushly layered and beautifully instrumented, if one actually engages the message of the songs, the net result is quite depressing. And unlike with Toad the Wet Sprocket, which similarly carts an emotionally heavy wagon, there isn't a release through the inherent energy of the music. Similarly nuanced but less emotionally exhausting albums are Wild Colonials' "Fruit of Life," Zero 7's "Simple Things" and Delerium's "Poem".
Happy listening!

5 out of 5 stars Second Project From the Project.......2005-04-24

Continuing from where they left from their self-titled debut, "Falling Farther In" contains more of the moving music that they left us wanting. Mary Fahl's vocals continue to mezmerize and the writing is even better here than on the debut, as if that were even possible! I listen to this CD all of the time, I never tire of it, and have often skied to the Project' and Mary Fahl's vocals. Talk about inpirational music with her flowing vocals among the beautiful scenery.

Favorites on this CD are "Something More Than This," the title cut, "One Dream," and "Adam & Eve."

You can't go wrong with either of the 'Project's two CD's, and in my opinion both are must haves for any CD collection!

5 out of 5 stars A Subtly Textured Tapestry of Hope, Darkness and Yearning.......2005-01-25

"Falling Farther In," OP's second album/CD, bears out the potential evident in their lush, darkly gothic debut. For anyone wanting a "bottom line" review before I dig into details, I'd call this "alterna-goth-pop," with all of the best of many genres present (intelligence, originality, accessibility, a brooding sensibility) with none of the crappy trappings (disposability, suicide-inducing hopelessness, hard on the ears).

Musically, the album manages to be both cohesive and wonderfully diverse. Richly textured with great production and musical depth, the songs range from anthemic, acoustic introspection ("Deep As You Go") to sweeping, lush ballad ("If I Could") to driving, percussion-punctuated rock ("Funeral in His Heart"). "Sunday Morning Yellow Sky" is a stand out track in these regards; driving bass line, sharp guitar strings and a full band to fill in between (and it's hip-swayingly groovy, too). "Something More Than This" features a fluid, rolling piano sound that really builds with the song's themes of ache and hope.

Even more, the music is emminently accessible. Unlike many musical "ar-teests" who seem to think it's their job to create music that's truly work to listen to, OP crafted a very accessible collection of songs with FFI. Whether you're grooving along with the melody or hearing the refrain in your head, the music on this CD was made to be pleasing to your ears (as well as your spirit).

Of course, it's not just OP's music that makes it distinctive. Mary Fahl's voice is in full power here - and I don't mean that she belts it out whenver possible like Celine Dion. Fahl makes full use of her vocal range, as well as being very comfortable singing or even talking quietly. To be sure, her voice soars and swoons, but it's always in service to the song and story, not as a showboat kind of effort. If you've never heard Mary Fahl before, I envy you the joy of hearing her for the first time: she's the brooding pop sister of Trisha Yearwood, someone with a sweet, strong voice that knows how to infuse it with life's sorrow and passion.

Lyrically, FFI is miles ahead of OP's debut. I'd consider the debut album the equivalent of a high school senior's (or perhaps college freshman's) take on poetry and gothic storytelling: you can feel the talent and potential, but it's struggling to breath through the conventions and cliches of the form. With FFI, OP's songwriters really break through. The lyrics are specific, intelligent, literate and meaningful. The album cascades with references to Alice in Wonderland, the 1993 tragedy in Waco, Texas, mid life crisis, the struggle to be a better lover/person, and more. There's a definite undertone of spirituality in the lyrics that's never preachy, always reaching.

And while I DO rate this album with Amazon's highest rating, there are a couple of misfires: tracks 5 and 7. They're not horrible, by any means, but compared to the rest of the album, they're fairly bland and unremarkable. "Johnny" is a tad didactic, while "After the Fall" fails to excite.

But that leaves 9 great songs, a feat by any standard. I can't even pick "stand outs" from the 9 because they're all just incredibly good. Start discovering the richness hidden here - you'll be glad you did.

Postscript: there's a certain amount of irony in that this album is STILL in print, long after Sony deemed OP not commercially viable.

Farther Along was the final album from the group who soared to worldwide fame in 1965 on the wings of "Mr. Tambourine Man." Although overshadowed on its initial release in 1972 by the frenzy of anticipation surrounding a forthcoming reunion album featuring the original quintet, Farther Along proved to be the better album. On it are indications of just what made the Byrds' marriage of space-rock, country music, and pop such a special hybrid. Clarence White's title track and the poignant "Bugler" display the band's strengths admirably. This lavishly expanded reissue is augmented by three previously unreleased tracks--"Driving Wheel," "Born to Rock and Roll," "Bag Full of Money"--that bridge the gap between the end of the Byrds and the beginning of Roger McGuinn's solo career. --Patrick Humphries

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars a living eulogy for Clarence White.......2006-11-06

Never intended as a "closer", 1971's 'Farther Along' represents the last call for the second coming of The Byrds, which unlike the first coming would never demand an encore, primarily due to the death of consumate lead guitarist and sometimes lead vocalist Clarence White. The album is particularly significant as the final major work of White, and furthermore contains the title track, arranged by White, which was performed at his funeral after being plowed down by a drunk driver in 1973. While many people herald the disc with accolades such as "warm", "intimate", and "noble", the truth is that the songs and the production were hurried. The album didn't come close to cracking the Top 100, certainly because The Byrds country-rock stylings were being overwhelmed by a tidal wave of heavy metal, glam-rock, and the commercialization of rock itself. Add to this a dearth of tracks by the band's heart and soul, Roger McGuinn (he only contributes the meaty opener, consciously composed as an opener, and one co-write), and the timing for the truncation of the band become apparent.

It is instructive that the bonus tracks on the disc, which were recorded as preliminary tracks for a follow-up to 'Farther Along', add serious appeal to this package. All are McGuinn compositions, and the churning 'Lost My Drivin' Wheel' may be the most entertaining and catchy song in the lot. 'Born To Rock and Roll', a good song which unfortunately doesn't live up to it's billing, fares better here than it would on McGuinn's third solo disc, and 'Bag Full of Money', written with Jacques Levy, easily the longest track at nearly six minutes, completes a compelling trilogy.

The high points of the original album as released on vinyl include McGuinn's gritty ode to his third wife, 'Tiffany Queen', the gospel influenced 'Farther Along', and another tear-jerker for dog lovers (building on 'Old Blue' from 'The Notorious Byrd Brother's'), 'Bugler', which Clarence White also took on his back to insure that his own lead vocal and the overall production would be done right. Other interesting tracks include 'America's Great National Pastime' (which comically equates "playing ball" with more dubious pastimes such as "cutting grass and grabbing a_ _"), which fell on it's face as the sole single release from the disc, and a sweet cover of the Fiesta's 'So Fine', resurrected by White. 'B.B. Class Road' is an ode to roadies, written by Gram Parsons and roadie extraordinaire "Dinky" Dawson, curious due to its rowdy and raunchy feel. 'Antique Sandy' and 'Precious Kate' are described as experiments in songwriting about relatively undistinguished women. 'Lazy Waters' comes across a bit ethereal due to it's Buddhist underpinnings, while 'Get Down Your Line' and 'Bristol Steam Convention Blues' (an instrumental closer) revisit the band's country-rock interests.

As with the other Columbia remasterings of The Byrds catalog in 2000, the tracks come impressively packaged. David Fricke of Rolling Stone Magazine provides well-written and informative liner notes, and the original artwork from the album is reproduced and supplemented with period photographs. The history behind each individual song is given along with the composing credits and running times. There is even a hidden track, a bluegrass instrumental along with studio dialog, tacked onto the bonus tracks. If the album is ever reissued again, it would be interesting to see how this creation could in any way be expanded. 'Farther Along' is certainly comparable in quality to other works by The Byrds, such as 'Byrdmaniax' and 'Dr. Byrds and Mr. Hyde', but will never stand with the early releases by the first incarnation of the band, or their own 'Untitled/Unissued' triumph from the previous year. Nevertheless, the album is necessary to completists, and worthy of a listen by anyone interested in possessing a complete vision of the band's unquestioned mark on the history of rock music. In this particular case, the bonus tracks raise a three star effort to four.

5 out of 5 stars Later Byrds is much more..........2005-01-14

I've never understood why people diss the later Byrds. Their capabilities as musicains had improved and matured dramaticallly from the their David Crosby years, which in my opinion is little more than Big Sur fluff (that is not to take away from Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name). Clarence White, being one of the front men for the White Brothers bluegrass band (along with his virtuoso brother, Roland) brought along the most amazing guitar work. That coupled with Gene Parsons' and Skip Battin's contributions make their later work such as Farther Along, Untitled, The Ballad or Easy Rider and even the overproduced Byrdmaniax amongst the best they had to offer. Little needs to be said about Roger McGuinn, as so much has already been said and written.

One of the things that make this a great package are the liner notes, which provide some very interesting history on the politics between the newer members (Battin and Parsons in particular), McGuin and David Crosby, the latter of which apparently had an influencial role in the demise of the group as we had come to know them. Sadly, it was just a few years later, that the world lost another great musician when Clarence white was killed in a loading dock accident. They were an institution that helped to define a generation, or two. A must have for appreciators of classic Amercian music of that late 60's early 70's period.

5 out of 5 stars Meet The Byrds' New Producer: The Byrds........2004-06-18

Many Byrds fans and critics prefer to think of "Farther Along" as the legendary group's real final album. It was the last effort recorded by the talented line-up of founder Roger McGuinn, Gene Parsons, Skip Battin, and Clarence White before McGuinn unceremoniously dissolved this version of the group for a brief, ill-fated reunion in 1973 of the original classic line-up (that recorded "Mr. Tambourine Man" in the 60s), a reunion that is criticized even in the liner notes of this remaster. "Farther Along" is actually one of The Byrds' best albums, making it a pity that it didn't even break the Top 100 (while the following self-titled "reunion album" did far better on the charts). Though Gram Parsons (no relation to Gene) had been out of the band for a couple years, his country-rock influence was still evident, and The Byrds cranked out a set of memorable songs rich in imagery and feeling.
After the notorious post-recording production 'flaws' of the previous album "Byrdmaniax" (which The Byrds were not responsible for), the group decided to produce this album themselves, and it pays off. "Farther Along" is just as (and sometimes more) intimate than anything the group ever released, and the line-up is strong. At times, The Byrds sound as if they are having a rowdy ball in the studio, and at other times the group is solemn and serious. The album's two main territories (rowdiness and seriousness) are perfectly, evenly balanced; there are brawling rockers like McGuinn's signature 'Tiffany Queen,' the roadie-tribute 'B.B. Class Road,' and 'So Fine,' as well as those that are more free-wheeling ('America's Great National Pastime,' co-written by Battin, and the Parsons/White banjo instrumental 'Bristol Steam Convention Blues'), and there's also the slightly more restrained and reflective 'Get Down Your Line.' But the deeper songs on "Farther Along" are what make the album so genuine and unforgettable. White's arrangement of the title traditional hymn reminds one of a faithful church congregation in a grassy field. It's hard to tell whether the sad 'Bugler' is about a dog or a person who gets killed in a highway accident, but it's stirring anyway, and 'Precious Kate' is another fine song co-written by Battin. 'Antique Sandy' is the closest The Byrds came to sounding like Simon & Garfunkel in their later career, but 'Lazy Waters' is the best of these songs; it's emotional vocal carries a lyric of desiring "to be wise again" and the guitar lines sound as if they've been broadcast by NASA from outer space.
This remastered edition contains three bonus tracks that pre-date Roger McGuinn's solo career (plus an unlisted, alternate version of 'Bristol Steam Convention Blues' that fills the second of half of track 14). These unissued versions are every bit as good as the officials; McGuinn's ironic melancholy vocal on 'Born To Rock and Roll,' the radio-ready 'Lost My Drivin' Wheel,' and the slice of Americana 'Bag Full Of Money,' all would have made great songs for The Byrds, and would have fit perfectly as part of the original record, but they're here now and that's what matters.
It's amazing that "Farther Along" was recorded in just four days, and it's an example of the determination of The Byrds to make their music sound the way they wanted it to. The only negative thing is that The Byrds' excellent self-production makes one wonder how much greater the already-accomplished previous albums might have sounded.

5 out of 5 stars In response:This album WAS pressed in America:Capitol#KC3105.......2004-01-25

For musical listening pleasure which is sure to touch you lyrically as well as musically get this one.

5 out of 5 stars One of the many Classic Albums............2003-05-10

One of the many classic albums which became forgotten until now when it was given a re-release. It would mark the last album The Byrds would ever make before calling it quits, the last to feature pioneering guitarists Roger McGuinn (who started a successful solo career) and Clarence White (who would tragically die in 1973, as a result of being struck by a drunk driver).
They are both excellent on this album, especially bassist Skip Battin and multi-talented drummer Gene Parsons as they manage to keep things moving along with the should-be-classic songs 'Tiffany Queen', 'Get Down Your Line', 'Bugler' and 'Bristol Steam Convention Blues'. But overall, it is worth buying and worth listening to.

The beauty of this retrospective of the Gram Parsons-Chris Hillman-led version of the seminal country-rock band is that it includes the group's masterwork almost in its entirety. Indeed, 9 of the 11 tracks from the group's classic 1969 debut, The Gilded Palace of Sin, appear on this 21-song overview of the group's early crest. With a foundation built on the very recordings that, along with the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo (another LP largely shaped by Parsons and Hillman), are the source of country-rock and its alt-country offspring, Farther Along is a banner anthology. Beyond the Gilded likes of "Wheels," "Sin City," and "Hot Burrito #1," however, Farther Along is generously fleshed out with selections from Parsons's second and final (and disappointing) FBB LP, Burrito Deluxe, and a couple of oddities in covers of the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody" and Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released." --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very nice single CD compilation.......2006-02-27

'Farther Along, The Best of The Flying Burrito Brothers' is a good selection from this group's first two albums. To counter another reviewer's remarks, a 'best of' album is not done to replace earlier classic albums. I agree heartily that the Burrito's first album, 'The Gilded Palace of Sin' is a truly great album, but if you have that on vinyl and you want something for your walkman without buying new copies of all their albums, this issue does the job.

The Flying Burrito Brothers were a spin-off from the Byrds, after they did their classic 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo', after bringing in Gram Parsons to replace the errant David Crosby, who flew off to create 'Crosby, Stills, and Nash'.

The Burritos were primarily Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman, Chris Etheredge, and Sneaky Pete, of whom I never bothered to track down his real name.

The only thing I miss from their original releases is the 'little hippy girl' talker done by Parsons.

Recommended as a sampler or very portable version of a classic 60's group.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great collection........2004-03-16

"Farther Along" may be out of print now, but if you come across it, it's a great single disc collection of these guys. Sure it doesn't have everything, but what's here is all excellent pioneering country-rock. You can't complain too much with 21 tracks of some of their best. Everything here from "Christine's Tune (a.k.a. devil in disguise)", to the partial cover of "I Shall Be Released" is wonderful. If you don't pick this up, check out "Sin City: The Best Of", it's about the same. "Gram Parsons" solo stuff is sweet too.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Album-It Ruins The Experience.......2001-02-03

Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman were the archeitects of a new style of music. The Flying Burrito Brothers weren't only the first and perhaps best Alternative Country/Country Rock Band, but their first two albums remain the definitive statements of the genre. Which is how you need to hear them. THE GILDED PALACE OF SIN is one of the greatest albums in the history of Rock or Country music. There is no equal to Parsons in terms of songcraft and vision, and THE GILDED PALACE OF SIN is packed with classics including:"Wheels", "Sin City", "Devil In Disguise/Christine's Tune", and many more. BURRITO DELUXE was an inferior follow-up but still much better than the manufactured Nashville product of today. With so many exceptional traits to their sound, how can a compilation of Parsons-era material sound so bad? A&M completely ruins the Burritos experience with this disc. Not only is the sound quality on this disc bad, but the compiling is terrible. Nine tracks (out of eleven) from the GILDED PALACE OF SIN album may sound like an easy and less expensive place to start, wrong. The nine tracks from THE GILDED PALACE OF SIN are the best songs on the CD, but they don't sound half as good on FARTHER ALONG. The nine tracks are "Christine's Tune/Devil In Disguise", "Sin City", "Do Right Woman", "Dark End Of The Street", "Wheels", "Juanita", "Hot Burrito #1", "Hot Burrito #2" and "Do You Know How It Feels" (the version by the Gram Parsons with the International Submarine Band on the SAFE AT HOME CD is better). After the first nine comes an outtake "Break My Mind". The Flying Burrito Brothers' version is on the level of the version Linda Ronstadt recorded for her debut HAND SOWN...HOME GROWN. The four tracks pulled from BURRITO DELUXE are definitely inferior to the first nine songs. The four tracks are "Farther Along", "Cody Cody", "God's Own Singer" and "Wild Horses". The remaining seven tracks are various outtakes, none of which are written by Parsons or Hillman. Only those interested in the historical perspective will find "Dim Lights", "Just Because", "Six Days On The Road", "To Love Somebody", "Close Up Honkeytonks", "Sing Me Back Home", or the fragment of "I Shall Be Released" to be of any interest. Musically, they really aren't, since one of the Burritos' greatest strengths was the superior quality of their original material. Even Chris Hillman said this represented the "Best and the worst of the 'Parsons-era Burritos'". Most listeners will only find the first half of the disc useful. If you want to get into The Flying Burrito Brothers the best way is to order a copy of THE GILDED PALACE OF SIN. It might cost more, but it's worth it. I'm playing my copy of their first release constantly. FARTHER ALONG is no treasure chest and if I had realized then how much better the full original THE GILDED PALACE OF SIN was, I would have purchased that CD initially. I'm giving it three stars because the Parsons material and original Flying Burrito Brothers recordings are extraordinary, but this compilation is very poor.

2 out of 5 stars Mostly of historical interest only.......2000-06-20

While many of the tracks on this CD have possibilities, indicating some decent songwriting skills, the arrangements are quite sparse and the vocals are just middling. I was hoping this would sound like an early-Eagles album, but Gram just doesn't have the vocal abilities of Glenn Frey or Don Henley and the arrangements and production seem somewhat primitive. I think Emmylou Harris' and Linda Ronstadt's versions of "Sin City" and "Dark End of the Street", respectively, are clearly superior to the Burritos', for instance. Gram Parsons' main contribution to music must be his songs and his influence on others, rather than his performances.

4 out of 5 stars Real Good.......2000-01-16

This is a strong CD full of great music. But I prefer Out of the Blue. With the exception of Dim Lights everything of FA is on OOTB. Costs 3 times as much though.

Paul Bowles had two careers, one as a composer of music for films, dance theater, and Broadway; the other as a writer of extraordinary fiction of the Beat era. While Bowles's fiction has a roughness and an alienation characteristic of the American expatriate experience of the 1950s (he moved to Morocco in 1949 and was friends with William S. Burroughs), his music is anything but. The Pastorela (1947) and Suite for Small Orchestra (1932-33) rival anything Aaron Copland was writing at the same time without being derivative or otherwise influenced by Copland's folksy Americana. As typical of RCA, the recorded sound is excellent, but special kudos go to the Eos Orchestra who invest Bowles's music with grace, color, and charm. Don't pass this release up. --Paul Cook

5 out of 5 stars It's Great To Be An American!.......2001-05-17

I have had a long-term interest in the missing generation of American composers -- that is, the generation of the '30s and '40s who tended to leftist views. Their most popular surviving members are Copland and Bernstein; but they also include Blitzstein, Bowles, Barber, Diamond, Foss, etc. I am quite grateful that they are slowly being rediscovered.

My interest in Paul Bowles began with a performance script of Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie," which specified that no music other than the music of Paul Bowles was to be used in productions of the play. "Who dat?"

Then I discovered "The Sheltering Sky," and a collection of his short stories, and an extremely exotic Morrocan autobiography called "A Life Full of Holes" that he translated. So, I thought, maybe he was really a writer who dabbled in music. But the recent biography of Copland said otherwise. Copland felt that he was very possibly the most talented of that generation. Then a door-stop sized biography of him came and went; more clues to his musical accomplishment but still, no music.

I was beginning to suspect that Mark Blitzstein was the more talented among the relatively unknown members of that generation. And I had recordings of a recital of his songs, "The Cradle Will Rock," "Regina," and "The Airborn Symphony" which supported it.

But this CD indicates a rush to judgment. I still adore Blitzstein, but Bowles is the better craftsman and far more ingenious in his creative approach to rhythm, form and instrumental color.

This CD is just too much fun. Thanks to their French training under Boulanger, they all got a thorough appreciation of the entire battery of Stravinsky's various rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic tricks, including his ongoing appreciation for folk songs and dances. Even the arty songs on this CD are spicy. And I am simply dazzled by the concerto for two pianos. What enormous fun!

May young scholars and performers continue to persue this repertoire and give it the fresh and refreshing interpretation it gets on this CD. It's great to be an American!

4 out of 5 stars Dissonant; the work of unfettered creativity.......2000-07-27

I like minimalists. For whatever reason I like the music of Adams, Glass, some of Reich, and especially the work of one composer whose work I chanced across: Ingram Marshall.

On the other hand, I'd never heard of Paul Bowles. Then there was a concert at the Kennedy Center of various pieces for two (and three) pianos. The conductor preceded the performance of Bowles' Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra with the fact that Bowles is better known as an author than as a composer. I didn't know that, but I paid attention to the Bowles piece. It didn't have the melody or magic fingerwork of the pieces by Mozart, Mendelssohn, or even the piece by Poulenc. But I like it. It reminded me of the minimalists.

I confess that I notice that concerto more than the other pieces on the disk; having seen it performed, I can relate to it more intimately. The booklet along with the CD says that Bowles spent a great deal of time in Tangier apparently fleeing from something in the U.S., probably something considered seditious at the time. During that exile, he, according to the booklet, picked up the influence of French composers. The booklet mentions Satie, Milhaud, and Poulenc. While I listen closely, what I notice is a touch of Ravel. And, since I find Ravel's music outstanding, who am I to criticize Bowles'?

It's hard to describe any of the music. Much of it, again, is minimalist to me. It's dissonant, pops all over. Bowles himself said of one of his pieces, that "it's like a monkey jumping from one tree to another." Some of the six songs seem a bit somber, even funerary. (Maybe I'll have to listen to them more closely.) But it's all so soothing. Since Bowles was an author in addition to being a composer, there was a stream of creative juices flowing from and around him. The mixture--or lack--of styles in the pieces on this CD reveals talent, no doubt about that. But it was a talent not constricted by the norms of his would-be instructors, Aaron Copland and Virgil Thompson. For that I think his instructors would be happy.

Get it and listen to it. It'll grow on you, and grow, and grow.

5 out of 5 stars Bowles as composer, a pleasant surprise.......2000-06-16

It was a surprise to me to find music of the famous author Paul Bowles. I have read Sheltering Sky and I was impressed by it. The CD booklet mentions a dual career for Bowles. Listening to his music I think it is a shame Bowles did not pursue a career as composer. He is by no means a mature composer, but the sincerity and passion of his music are very refreshing. His music is American, with strong influence of Copland. His sound is jazzy and romantic with latin influences. I was very impressed by the two vocal works on the disc. One, a zarzuala based on Garcia Lorca is an exiting piece of music with a latin touch. The other is a suite of six songs, beautifully sung by Kurt Ollmann. Overall the performers do a great job. It is clear they like the music and especially the voices are a good match for this kind of music. I gave it a 5 star rating because of the rareness of the music, the quality of the performance. I bought the disc as a gift and I find it hard to part from it.

5 out of 5 stars Proof that American songs can be great.......2002-07-05

I have had the lp issue of this album for many years and have enjoyed it more with each encounter. The songs by Duke, Bowles, Citkowitz, Chanler, and Copland are based on some familiar poems, but the songs are not, themselves, well-known. I particularly have liked the witty and memorable Duke settings of E.A. Robinson's "Luke Havergal" and "Miniver Cheevy," but the real musical highlight of the disc would probably be the settings of James Joyce's "Chamber Music" by Israel Citkowitz. Donald Gramm is in fine voice for his selections and Bethany Beardslee proves again her legendary status as an interpreter of all kinds of modern music. It is definitely a good thing that this has been reissued on CD and I hope it will reach a wide audience.

      5 out of 5 stars Great.......2005-03-08

After the original line-up of Spirit broke up quite a few people ignored their releases. It' really a shame because they continued to release great albums and these two are no exception. Son Of Spirit is basically Randy & Ed continuing what they started on Spirit of '76 while Farther Along is a reunion of all the original band except Jay Fergeson. Having the two as a set just makes it better. The songs go from strength to strength with the only clinker being a rather limp version of Yesterday. Rock, jazz, blues, country, folk all rub shoulders with incredible musicianship in a band that should have been superstars but are more remembered by their influence on others.

I too first heard Gloritone played on the Stern radio show, and instantly liked their music. I didn't catch who they were though. Fortunately, after quite a few months had passed I heard Howard giving an update about how the band was doing, and he played some more music. This time I wrote the name down.

I love this music. This band is so much better than what is played on the radio, than who shows up on TV and at award shows, and who gets written about in magazines and newspapers. This is a prime example of what is wrong with the music business. Huge talent like Gloritone goes unknown and ignored while (insert your no-talent, famous band-of-the-day here) becomes a platinum selling household name.

This is right up there with Built to Spill's "Keep it Like a Secret," Badfinger "Wish You Were Here" and (almost) Sugar's "Copper Blue" for my heavy rotation listening.

Looking forward to lots more new and great songs from this band in the future.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Disc.......2003-07-09

I heard "Swan Dive" on The Howard Stern show and loved it. What a great tune. Bought this disc and found 10 more fantastic tracks. Stupid name for a band, but this is high quality alternative rock. I hope they get more exposure and make it big.

5 out of 5 stars This Cd is Great!.......2002-09-26

Gloritone is an awesome band from Arizona. I first heard them in one of my snowboard videos. There are no flaws here. Both Cup Runneth Over and this cd are excellent. Their blistering guitar riffs don't stray and they have wonderful melodies. The lead singers voice isn't annoying to listen too, rather it has a Nirvana-like tone to it. This band certainly has Nirvana influence, but they are themselves and should be played on the radio everywhere. Swan Dive, Lessers Could Have Missed are excellent tracks, but then again, I love them all. Pick both of there cds are great, pick them up today.
