Product Description
Not sure which of Yelena's albums you'd like better? Listen to "Travel" first. It combines songs from her original music CDs released in 2000 through 2005. Tracks 1 through 3 are from her new release called "Medieval Symphony" (2005). Tracks 4-5 are from "The Birth of Emmanuel" (2000). Tracks 6-8: "Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ" (2002). Tracks 9-13: "Piano Chronicles," albums 1 & 2 (2003). Tracks 14-16: "Kaleidoscope of Life" (2002). These are all complete songs, not excerpts. In spite of being an anthology of different works, the "Travel" album is an independent work with a "travel" theme containing easy going, upbeat and relaxing music and is quite apt for listening while driving, working or resting. This work will give you a general idea of Yelena Eckemoff's inventive musical style. Play time: 74 min.

5 out of 5 stars Donnie Darko.......2007-07-03

I was drawn to buy this CD because of hearing Michael's arrangement and Gary Jules rendition of "Mad World" which was originally recorded by Tears for Fears way back when. I glad I did. The music was written as the underscore for a Science Fiction movie by the same name and now I really want to see this film. The music is other worldly, ethereal and strange in a good way!

2 out of 5 stars just wanted "mad world".......2007-01-09

loved the mad world track from the Gears of War video game. was hoping the rest of the album was as cool, but it is all instrumentals. a little disappointing, i must admit.

5 out of 5 stars Gary Jules' remake of Mad World is superb!.......2007-01-06

Gary Jules' remake of this great past favorite (Mad World) is superb! The accompanying tracks on this album are not my style, but I didn't buy this for the other tracks. For that I feel this score is quite impressive.

2 out of 5 stars Liked only one cut.......2007-01-04

I bought this CD for the song "Mad World". Unfortunately it was the only one I liked, but I've spent more money on dumber things.

4 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and all-around cool........2006-06-05

Michael Andrews is one of today's best composers. His score for the little-known sci-fi flick "Cypher" was brilliant, and although his music in Donnie Darko is never quite as good (after all, DD was one of his first real scoring jobs), it is a somber, weird, sometimes beautiful album.
Andrews uses many bizarre non-musical instruments and female vocals to great effect, and creates an ambient, sad world that works regardless of your having seen the film.
His song "Mad World" is one of the saddest and most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
The disk isn't very long--just a little over thirty-seven minutes as I recall. But definitely recommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great CD for the Summer.......2007-06-29

We originally got hooked on Susie Tallman's lullaby CDs, but are equally pleased by her more upbeat CDs, especially as our daughter gets older. "Let's Go!" is no exception. This is one the whole family can enjoy. (It's also makes a great gift for the Summer vacation season.)

5 out of 5 stars parent .......2007-06-07

My children love all of her music/CD's. We got the first 2 as gifts. It's fun for everyone to listen to and the vocals are great (adults and children). I like the updated versions and my children have learned all of the songs. It's something we don't mind listening to in the car and singing along with as we go.

5 out of 5 stars So Much Fun!.......2007-02-15

My 2 and 4 year old girls get excited when they hear the first song on "Let's Go!" In almost no time, they've learned all the songs and love to sing along with Susie Tallman and Friends. Susie's done it again! This is a great compilation of clever songs that help make that potentially prickly "toddler drive time" a pleasure. I would recommend this to anyone with a sense of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Interstellar travel in your headphones........2007-05-31

Well, Stargate SG.1 has finally ended after 10 seasons, and this soundtrack CD covers only the first two. I think there's room for a new CD or two, and hopefully the Stargate SG.1 people will get around to creating one.

Anyway, I've listened to this CD once so far and I was very impressed. The music really is enjoyable on its own, and I found myself listening to the Cold Lazerus music twice before I continued throught the rest of the CD.

Finally, don't think there isn't much music on this CD because of the small nunber of tracks. Many of these tracks are six to ten minutes long.

5 out of 5 stars Stargate Music Album.......2007-05-12

Great CD throughout. It's a shame the show is being cancelled after 10 years but this music helps to keep the memory on.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the 1st Music release.......2004-10-24

The best of Stargate SG-1 is infact a 9 track compilation of the 1st 2 seasons of the TV show. It's really not the best of Stargate. I rather enjoyed the 1st release namely called Music of Stargate SG-1 and the actual movie music-score. However I still enjoyed the music from several episodes of the 2nd season, most notable being the music suite of Hathor.

A fan of the TV show should be pleasantly surprised by the suites in this CD. It won't disapoint.

5 out of 5 stars one for the fans.......2004-05-07

This CD is really one for the fans. If you've not watched Stargate SG-1 before, then it will be very limited in its' appeal.
I personally enjoyed the CD, as I could relate the music back to the particular episodes in which they appeared. Some of the tracks are sweet and melodic, others are more ominious, so it doesn't come up short on variety.
The music sounds, for the most part, rather sythesised (which is why, if you are used to sprawling epic soundtracks from mainstram movies, I generally don't recommend this if you have never watched the show). Tracks are usually a mixture of synthesised sounds combined with more organic notes from traditional instruments, creating a very "sci fi" sound.
This is a great CD to work and study to as it provides great background music without being too intrusive.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet.......2004-02-23

This is a great CD. Just listing to it makes me feel like I'm watching the show.

5 out of 5 stars ~Will be a lifetime favorite on mine!~~.......2006-11-18

I was in the 8th grade in 1988 when I first heard the CD...I was in the car with my family and boyfriend on the way to San Francisco one cold December night to walk around during the Christmas Holiday when I first heard "Twighlight World" and the song stuck w/me for life. I went to the nearest mall and bought the tape...lol....then I lost it and 8 years later I bought the CD, now I am at it again and purchasing yet another CD from the ones lost in the past, at 31yrs old and married I STILL get tingles whenever I hear this CD, it brings back great memories and loves in my life. I love EVERY song on this CD and the lead has such a sultry and lush voice and she's in the ranks with Sade. I HAD to comment because this is a favorite CD of mine and will be for LIFE!

4 out of 5 stars Definitely.......2006-02-22

Swing Out Sister's jazz-inspired diva pop has always been on the fringes of the American mainstream (with their breakout hit being...yes...the most fun, poppy thing they've ever done). I've always been a fan of the more mellow, melodic side of diva music, and Corrine Drewery is the perfect complement to the Whitney Houstons and Mariah Careys of the world. It's Better to Travel doesn't disappoint. It actually covers a fair amount of ground (cf. Fooled By a Smile to Communion) and doesn't have a single unpleasant track. It even has a moment of sheer goofiness...play the Twilight World remix and you'll see what I mean.

More like a languid cruise than a whirlwind European tour, but still a pleasant trip.

5 out of 5 stars Great R&B!.......2005-02-18

Swing Out Sister are probably the only British R&B musicians in the world. They were influenced by the late Marvin Gaye and other artists who recorded for the Detroit-based Motown label. If you listen to SOMEWHERE IN THE WORLD from 1997's SHAPES AND PATTERNS and AM I THE SAME GIRL? from 1992,you could hear the MG sound. The first hit from this album is BREAKOUT which has great saxophones. TWILIGHT WORLD,the only other hit(at least in the USA) is pretty cool. Many of these songs were written by SOS members Corinne Drewery and Andy Connell. Drewery is the lead vocalist and Connell is the keyboardist.

It's oddly coincidental that Rosanne Cash's first No. 1 country hit was "Seven Year Ache." As it turns out, it's been seven long years since her previous album, 1996's 10 Song Demo, and though she'd written an album's worth of songs after that, her voice suddenly gave out due to a polyp on her vocal chords. Thanks to voice therapy, Cash was able to resume singing and recording, and the result is the hauntingly beautiful Rules of Travel. Tastefully produced by husband John Leventhal and featuring guest appearances by Sheryl Crow, Steve Earle, Teddy Thompson, and Johnny Cash, the album is a showcase for Cash's trenchant, soul-baring songs about love and mortality. Nearly every song is infused with a brooding melancholy, even the ones with sweet musical hooks ("Closer Than I Appear," "I'll Change For You"). When you hear the poignant "September When It Comes," a duet with her father and one of the album's highlights, you can't help but be stirred hearing them sing, "When the shadows lengthen and burn away the past/they will fly me like an angel to a place where I can rest." Rules of Travel is an impressive musical return from one of our most gifted singer-songwriters--and her voice, by the way, sounds as good as ever. --David Hill

i haven't heard rosanne cash in far too long. this is a wonderful re-introduction to a very talented singer songwriter. i thuroughly enjoyed it

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2006-05-12

This album inspired me to get into more rootsy, more down home music that I usually don't listen to. Roseanne Cash has developed a critically acclaimed and commercially successful career with her own personal brand of country, pop, rock & folk and more. I saw her perform most of these songs on Austin City Limits and a couple of music videos and was very impressed. I'm glad I've rediscovered her smooth, soulful voice again. "Rules of Travel" is a piece of pop and country music that is just great. This album is rockin, soulful, joyful and mournful. The arrangements of the songs are really good. When you strip away all of the glitter, glossy production, and record company push in popular music, you get something honest and real, something like "Rules of Travel". I really like this album to to point that I listen to it every day.

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile sleeper.......2005-08-16

I've had this CD for a couple of years, and I have to admit, when I first got it I wasn't terribly impressed. It wasn't "Seven Year Ache" and it wasn't "My Baby Thinks He's a Train" and I was listening to a lot of Melissa Etheridge. This album doesn't jump up and grab you by the throat, but it has staying power. I listen to it more now than I did when I first got it. How often can you say that about an album?

4 out of 5 stars Rosanne is cooler than her cohort.......2005-08-02

I saw her perform most of these songs on Austin City Limits. I must admit I hadn't paid much attention to her since her debut album, back when I was playing in country bands.
Much of this material is kinda introspective, but hey, on the plus side you get great vocals, well crafted songs, tons of sincerity and just flat out integrity from this great artist who doesn't have to pretend she is anything she isn't. And these days, that is pretty refreshing!
I think I am becoming a fan.

4 out of 5 stars Rosanne Cash's Amazing Journey.......2004-04-26

I had kind of forgotten what a unique voice Rosanne Cash has been over the years until I saw her play a brief live set on our local cable channel in Philadelphia. As soon as I heard her sing the wonderful title song and the poignant "Last Stop Before Home," I knew I had to find this CD. I'm glad I've rediscovered her emotive, husky voice again, especially having heard the backstory about her near seven year fight to regain her voice after polyps were discovered on her vocal cords.

"The Rules Of Travel" is easily Rosanne's best album since the dark "Interiors," the chronicle of her breakup with then husband Rodney Crowell. Eleven ruminations on the pain of love and loss, her voice conveys the deep-hued melancholy that first struck me with its honesty back when "Blue Moon With Heartache" made me a fan. Producer and new husband John Leventhal frames each song with great care, making the guest appearances sound like more than random duets. Steve Earle adds his gritty tone to "I'll Change For You," underscoring that song's ultimate falsity. As much as the change is wished for, there's no way it's ever going to come. Teddy Thompson (son of folk legend Richard Thompson) has picked up the same kind of wanderer's eloquence his father has mastered over the years for "Three Steps Down." (Which, by the way, is one of three songs Rosanne did not have a hand in wirting, but was cowritten by Marc Cohn of "Walking in Memphis" fame. Jakob Dylan of the Wallflowers and Joe Henry also contribute good work.)

But the best of the lot has to be "September When It Comes," a duet with Rosanne's father Johnny. It certainly becomes hard to remain separated from the song when the elder Cash sings "They will fly me like an angel to a place I can rest." It's an amazing moment on a great album. Maybe Rosanne won't break back into the spotlight with "The Rules Of Travel," but if you're reading this, you can certainly do your part by getting yourself a copy.

5 out of 5 stars Welsh passion/English art songs.......2007-06-17

Bryn Terfel brings astonishing energy, not to mention eardrum-rattling dynamic range, to these English art songs. Frankly, his passionate, sometimes over the top interpretations work for me, injecting virility into songs that could easily become effete in the hands of a more traditionally "English" singer.

As always, DG's sonics are superior. Where a few others have found overly processed sound I simply find superlative engineering that manages to handle Terfel's sometimes overwhelming voice while still capturing the wide range of colors and timbres he injects into every piece.

Malcolm Martineau, by the way, provides first rate accompaniment, also captured with warmth and brilliance by DG's Tonmeister.

5 out of 5 stars "A great lower baritone voice.......incredible songs,".......2006-07-19

Bryn Terfel has one of the most amazing voices. To top it all he has this real passion when he sings. This is a must have for ANY music fan...

The song selections are great....wonderful classical tunes. Many of the lyrics are by Robert Louis Stevenson who, well, we know his reputation.

My favorite song: Whither Must I Wander?

5 out of 5 stars ENGLISH ART SONGS..........2006-07-17

Terfel does a fine job with these pieces.

Especially fine are the Vaughan Williams and Butterworth songs.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the male music student.......2005-08-17

As a music student I have found this cd to be a priceless tool. With the wide range of artists Terfel has used in this collection it is a great way for begginers to start to explore wonderful pieces of fantastic composers that would otherwise be unknown. While many would be familiar with the NYSSMA standard "The Vagabond" (which is beautifully presented) I hope that future teachers and professionals would take the time to search through the rest to find songs to not only raise interest in the different composers but feed their passion for the art of music.

5 out of 5 stars Best Recording.......2005-05-09

This Blend of English art song is fantastic a must have for any serious bass-baritone. Not only the always amazing and tremendous interpretation of song by Terfel but especially in the Finzi and Williams do we finally, I reitterate Finally, hear the story of the Young composers passion come out! Also another plus to Terfel, we hear the best bass baritone sound that I think I have ever heard from him! I have listened to every CD that he has made to date including the new silent noon and this is still my most frequently used selection. Also Coach accompanist take a listen to the way that Martineau plays this music it is infactuating! If you buy a Bryn Terfel CD I would reccomend this one!

Album Description

Since 1990, Saint Etienne has been putting out beautiful, high concept pop music that's as clever as it is catchy. This is their first compilation, collecting songs spanning the group's 15 year career to date and from multiple labels (Reprise, Sub Pop, Beggars Banquet, etc.) It includes their hits "Only Love Can Break Your Heart", "Nothing Can Stop Us", and "Avenue", domestically unavailable tracks like "He's On The Phone" and "Burnt Out Car", and a couple of unissued gems.

3 out of 5 stars Yawn..........2005-10-31

I never thought I'd say this, but this it the worst that Saint Etienne has put out. I've always been excited to see new Saint Etienne discs, but this was bad... I felt I had been taken.

Before I'm bashed, let me explain...this CD is a repeat of a lot that has been produced already. The only new stuff was the instrumentals and they sounded a lot like existing stuff too.

For any new Saint Etienne fans, I think your money would be better spent on "Tiger Bay", "Good Humor" or a compilation disc. Even Sarah Cracknell by herself is good stuff.

Try to steer clear of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars pop perfection.......2005-08-10

saint etienne fans are apt to throw around superlatives like 'pop,' 'nostalgic,' 'glittery,' and my favorite: 'sophisticated.' and i admit i count myself as one of them. fortuntely, all those superlatives are true. saint etienne, quite simply, is the *best* pop band of the last twenty years.

subpop's 'best of' release (which was hardly necessary given the number of saint etienne 'best of's' out there: 'too you to die, smash the system, etc) is a nice introduction to the band, despite some glaring omissions (how can any 'best of' not include 'you're in a bad way?' criminal!). however, given the breatdth of the saint etienne catalogue (upwards of 300 songs not including remixes -- that'd add another 150 or so), any 'best of' will fall miserably short of truly representing the band's stylistic wanderings and deviations. what's most striking about this collection is how dance-oriented it is. an overwhelming majority of the tracks selected are more suited for dance floor. 'he's on the phone,' 'like a motorway' and 'action,' for example, are prime examples of saint etienne hitting all the right groove-buttons; but saint etienne never rested on their laurels. it would have been easy for st etienne to stand back and keep churning out catchy pop songs (and really, who did it better?).

sadly, some of the et's finest moments ('the process,' 'i buy american records,' 'clark county record fair,' 'california snow story,' 'spring,' 'leafhound,' 'marble lions,' 'former lover,' etc ad naseum) will never reach the casual fan's ears. it's a shame, but i can rest assured that any saint etienne is better than no saint etienne.

in the end, this is a nice intro to those who've never had the experience of hearing the band before; but saint etienne fans, rabid and completist as we are, will most likely buy this for 'fascination' and 'primrose hill' (an acoustic intrumental version of 'soft like me) simply because we have to have it, and doesn't subpop know it. damn them. =)

5 out of 5 stars Just like one reviewer once said about St. Etienne-............2005-06-04

...it's what the pop music SHOULD sound like.
I love Saint Etienne and have been in love with them for a very long time. I love their slow ballads (Carn't sleep), their dancy stuff (Hug My Soul), their instrumental songs (Dunnottar), the experimental (Interlude), and even the spoken samples between the tracks (St. Etienne fans know what I am talking about).
They are pure geniuses and I hope they keep it coming. Just remember- they are a lot more complex than they seem at first. Give them a chance and you will be more than glad.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Etienne Beginners, Less So for Pros.......2005-04-26

OK, from a very pro-Etienne point of view, there are 2 separate reviews that can be written here: one for those new to St. Etienne, and those who are long-time fans.

For those of you who are new to St. Etienne, this is a great introduction. Previous 'Best Of' collections (i.e., Smash the System) are great and more inclusive, but were released before the latest 2 studio albums. This is a great collection that covers the entire span of an incredibly eclectic but unwaveringly good career. As such, if you are only going to buy one St. Etienne CD, this is not a bad choice.

For those who have known and loved St. Etienne for some time, there arise a couple of problems. First are the 2 B-sides that will lure those of us who own all of the other 'best of' songs to buy the new album (myself included) - 'Primrose Hill' is an average instrumental; 'Fascination' is a good (though not great) track, with vintage Etienne sound. The second problem for longtime fans are some of the obvious omissions (Pale Movie, Shower Scene) which may offend the sensibilities of those who care about such things. The liner notes, however, are fantastic and list all Etienne releases (including fanclub-only CDs) and almost necessitate the album's purchase of their own accord.

So, for Etienne beginners and fanatics the album is a must; for those who fall in the middle, it's more difficult to justify.

By 1995, after five years in Albert Collins's band and 10 years in John Mayall's band, guitarist Coco Montoya had been studying his field so long he deserves a doctorate in the blues. Serving as his dissertation is his first solo album, Gotta Mind to Travel, an impressive document which should pass muster with any examining committee. Montoya has long been known as a tasteful, eloquent guitarist, but on this debut he also reveals a surprisingly strong, supple singing voice and a clever instinct for songwriting. The result is the emergence of an already mature talent on his very first solo project. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Blues.......2005-08-10

Not quite as good as some earlier CD's I have but still good

5 out of 5 stars This is Blue.......2002-03-30

More country, than blue?? Listen to "Someday After Awhile" or "You Don't Love Me". How could you even mention country, These songs make me want to lay on the floor and cry.

Overall, one of the best CD's I have ever heard, every song on it is good, can't go wrong buying this one

3 out of 5 stars A little more 'country music' than 'blues'.......2001-06-21

Have to admit I have not listened to this disc very much... but am somewhat disappointed with it so far. The guitar on this album lacks that raw, innovative, edge that I heard Coco play on some of John Mayall’s songs. Also, the lyrics didn’t seem all that creative as one other reviewer suggested. However, I am obviously in the minority on this. .... ....

4 out of 5 stars Coco is good.......2001-02-27

Coco Montoya used to play drums for Albert Collins. Albert taught Coco to play guitar and it was a case of the student exceeding his teacher. This is a good album. Coco's phrasing and singing rank him with some of the best. There are many great tracks. I recommend this album and the other Coco Montoya albums. If you enjoy this, also check out 'Life in the Jungle' with John Mayall and Walter Trout.

5 out of 5 stars Best I have ever heard! WE NEED MORE OF Coco PLEASE.......1999-09-03

I have been a blues listner for a very long time and this is the best that I think I have ever heard. His music is smooth and yet at the same time it packs a maximum PUNCH. I have turned all my friends on to Coco and they all want MORE. I would Love to see him in concert. He is the BEST.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but forgotten.......2004-11-05

I heard about a 20 second clip of the original Louie, Louie on an episode of Northern Exposure. I then downloaded the song of iTunes (its no longer available on iTunes, however) and really liked his sound. So, I found this on Amazon, but with no sound clips, or reviews, I pretty much had to buy it on faith and impulse. I'm glad I did. This is a very expansive 30-track look at his career and it includes a great biographical booklet that provides a story for just about every track that is on here. The music is a very good blend of soul music and doo-wop from the late fifties and early sixties, and the sound quality is fantastic. He never had a big hit, even with his excellent rendition of Louie, Louie, but there are still a lot of great songs. Most notable are In a Real Big Way, No Kissin' and a Huggin', Well Done, Its All Right, and Have Love Will Travel (even though it's basically a retread of Louie, Louie, it's still a good song. Granted, there are some songs on here that don't work as well as others, especially those from his brief attempt at country, and it seems that after a while he was trying to find anything that would give him a decent hit. He did, after all, write a hit song that other people were making famous. But still with 30 songs, there is a lot to like on this disc.
