Product Description
Welcome to Hawaii. Come along on a 3-dimensional journey through one of nature's greatest spectacles. Experience the stillness of a gentl sunrise...the whispering palm trees beside the trail...the quiet sernity of a pristine rain forst...the hypnotic rhythm of the sea...and the grandeur as the sun sets over the NaPali coast. We've spent hundreds of hours exploring and recording throughout Hawaii's National Parks and wildlife sanctuaries in order to capture the natural soundscapes that is unique to these amazing islands. By weaving these, and many other natural sounds together with music inspired by our journey, we have created a "Symphony with Nature."

Purchased this CD for Hawaiian theme party... great collection of music and fantastic background for our party - continue to play it.

1 out of 5 stars Did I receive a CD that someone else returned?.......2007-04-07

The music is beautiful, but I was really surprised with the poorness of presentation. The CD jewel case was badly damaged. The cover fell off as soon as I removed the plastic wrap, and the bottom corner of the case was completely missing. It's all an enigma -- the shrink wrap was intact and there were no small pieces of plastic anywhere. Perhaps this was a returned CD?

But back to the music - it is relaxing. There are only a few songs on the CD, which explains the low price.

Gives one the ambience and atmosphere of traditional Hawaii. Great as background sound for those that still talk during parties late at night.

4 out of 5 stars Very Nice.......2006-07-17

I think it's a very tasteful CD. I like the melodies and I think I'll use this CD for my luau.

    Album Description

In the eastern Polynesian islands known as Hawaii, the making of music and dance is center on mele or chanted texts. Mele, sung alone, are said to be performed in the oli style (without dance or musical instruments). When coupled with hula (dance), they are called mele hula, and when the pahu drum is added the performance is called mele hula pahu. More specific terms are also applied to mele that are used for specific purposes such as processionals, prayers, and naming.

The practice of perpetuating tradition through the teacher-student relationship is strong in Hawaiian mele. Performers' styles are recognized, back through time, in their teacher's, and their teachers' teacher's styles. These recordings give a view of several performance styles of Hawaiian mele between 1923 and 1989, although the traditions and the mele reach much further back in time

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Healing Music from Polynesia.......2002-11-13

Hawaiian Drum Dance Chants: Sounds of Power in Time is an excellent CD. These vintage recordings are true Hawaiian Hula Pahu songs, performed by some of the last few people familar with traditional Hawaiian culture. As the introductory notes say, this is music with a cultural and religious significance and deserves to be treated as such. Now that that has been stated, the music itself is well worth listening to. It is sung in Hawaiian, complete with linear notes, in both Hawaiian and English. I found the translations to be quite enjoyable, especially as they are presented in metric form. Unlike most other non-western forms of music, Hawaiian music isn't that unfamilar to western ears. Even if you don't speak Hawaiian, you probably can appreciate this deeply moving collection of music. The first six tracks are actually more "contemporary" Hula Pahu songs. Of them, Mele Pule, Mele Kahea and Hanohano ka uka o Pihanakalani are perhaps the most enjoyable. From then on, we are given traditional and historical recordings from the Bishop museum. These are some of the best parts of the CD. Astute ears will notice some key differences between these and previous tracks. Nonetheless, it remains quite enjoyable. Even though the quality of some of these tracks is a little scratchy, it is still an excellent CD.

4 out of 5 stars A scholarly look at Polynesian folk music.......2002-11-13

The sparse sounds of "hula pahu," the plaintive sounds of Hawaiian hula songs. This is a pretty hardcore folkloric collection, with minimal drumming and bare-bones vocals. It's certainly not for most casual listeners, but invaluable for anyone seeking to make a serious investigation into the roots of Hawaiian music.

    4 out of 5 stars Haunting, Powerful.......2000-09-18

I found this music, despite it's fairly simple format (almost entirely voice and simple drumming) nonetheless weaves a dense fabric. It is at times haunting, often powerful, and worth repeated listenings.

5 out of 5 stars The real deal -- ancient Hawaiian chants.......2004-12-04

Authentic, for-real, hardcore traditional hula chants, sung a capella by two brothers who were born in Honolulu but later grew up in Los Angeles. The Kanilau's were both very active in Hawaiian cultural preservation efforts, and they sing these songs with great warmth and sincerity; these recordings are probably much more accessible than other, earlier "field recording" style albums of similar material. Great liner notes, too. Worth checking out!

in three words: mellow, soothing, relaxing. the artists are from hawaii, and some numbers on this CD are sung in Hawaiian, but i wouldn't necessarily label this music "Hawaiian music." anyone looking for good music to fall asleep to will find it a good choice. if you ARE a hawaiian music fan, you're in for a real treat. you'll see some great musicians contributing...sista robi, jake shimabukuro....

i play this CD when i put my two year old to bed. i have several other lullaby CDs, but for the past two months, this has been the only one i've been playing.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is an instant trip to the islands of Hawaii........1999-11-08

Calming simplicity, beauty, and stirring melodies are the theme on this CD featuring the revival of the slack gey guitar-style instrumentals. It is a quick antidote for techology and stress overload on the mainland.

The CD includes tradional songs such as HAWAIIAN REVERIE from the 1930's to those composed by Doug and Sandy McMater, such as BETTY'S MELE.

Just as one never tires of a sunset, the pounding surf, or a baby's smile, the Hanalei Sunset CD creates a welcome escape to another place, another time, at each playing.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the most beautiful, soothing music we've ever heard........1999-10-29

We first heard Doug & Sandy's slack key guitar music live, when we visited Kauai several years ago. We found it so calm and soothing, and because they were playing while the sun set over Hanalei Bay, it seemed like heaven to be enveloped in such beauty! Hearing this music brought such an inner tranquility and sense of peace, it seemed to penetrate our souls. We've returned several times to Hanalei Bay and usually have been privileged to hear Doug & Sandy play, always with the same feeling of being bathed in beauty.

Their "Hanalei Sunset" CD/album does the next best thing because it brings us their beautiful Hawaiian music with the soothing sounds of Hanalei Bay surf, and transports us back (helped by the album photos) to that lovely island and the true spirit of aloha we've found there. Thank you, Doug & Sandy, for your music and this special album--we love it and are giving copies to all our friends and relatives! It even appeals to our young grandson, so we recommend it for all children because it conveys such tranquility and beauty. Goodness knows we all need more of that!

5 out of 5 stars Their music is the greatest stress management tool ever........1999-10-20

This CD plays in our office all the time. It is so soothing and reminds us of the beautiful and best times in Hawaii.

          Album Description

5 out of 5 stars Total audio natural experience in 3D.......2006-09-02

This review is for all Orange Tree Productions CDs, recorded for the National Park Series. The music is incredible; recorded using a special binaural microphone that captures the sounds of nature in 3D. The effect is the most amazing music I've heard. These CDs record the sounds of nature including not just standard bird songs but also sounds of whistling wind on a desert plateau, misting rain in the forest, distant thunder on the horizon, a tricking creek in the woods, massive rivers plowing thru the valley, a crackling campfire and popping wood, horses and mules plodding along, waves pounding the seashore, seagulls flying overhead, and other sounds. These sounds are then mixed with beautiful melodies w/ flute, piano, and other instruments to create the most incredible mood music I have ever heard. You will actually feel like you are there experiencing nature. Each CD produced by Orange Tree is impeccable, a jewel in itself. I cannot recommend enough that listeners looking for total relaxation get these CDs. Orange Tree produces quite an impressive list of CDs, each based on sounds and music from a certain geographical area or national park. My first exposure to Orange Tree was in a bed & breakfast in Colorado. I bought Sounds of the Rocky Mountains and have since collected over 10 CDs, each for a different National Park. It is well worth the money if you are looking for a total audio natural experience in 3D.

          5 out of 5 stars Hawaiian Heaven.......2004-01-31

My wife and I were married on the Hawaiian island of Kauai in 1997 and it really was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Whilst waiting for our return flight I was browsing the music stand in Honolulu airport and came across this CD. I bought it but had to wait until we returned home before I could play it. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from something picked up from a music stand in the airport but this blew us both away. This was EXACTLY what we wanted. It was the true blend of gentle Hawaiian music that is popular on Kauai. This is a fantastic CD to relax to and it always brings the memories flooding back for us both. You don't have to of visited the Hawaiian islands to appreciate this though. I really can't recommend this CD highly enough - its just a shame that Amazon dont have any track snippets available for this cd .

5 out of 5 stars A Head Trip to Hawaii.......2003-08-30

I bought this CD while I was on vacation in Hawaii. Along with the usual shirts and post cards, I wanted a musical remerberance of the trip. Now when I play this, it relaxes me and reminds me of a stress-free week in paridise. This CD is great for your commute to work, or as background music while doing whatever. I am in the process of buying more by this same group.

          4 out of 5 stars Peaceful Hawaii.......2003-06-01

This is not a dance album, this is a mood music, atmosphere sort of album. Traditional music, natural sounds and guitar music all blend into a very nice, relaxing whole. If life is getting too irritating, this will make it a little better. It really gives a sort of Kauai feeling, more than a Honolulu feeling. Pastoral, natural, relaxed, not exciting and hectic. Whale song, birds, waves, rain, or maybe waterfalls, all contribute to the feel of the actual islands, and the back country, at that.
