Stone Edge

This French quartet is billed as a Deep Forest from Brittany because of their crazy quilt of bagpipes, flutes, Celtic spirit, and contemporary dance beats. The concept is intriguing in theory, but too often the traditional strengths of the players are suffocated by electronic textures and progressive rock overkill--the lone English-language track, "Yesterday's Child," being a sorry case in point. --Jeff Bateman

Album Description
Rick Stone's latest Jazzand release Samba de Novembro features his guitar in solo, duo, trio and quartet settings with two long-time associates; pianist Tardo Hammer and bassist Yosuke Inoue, and the ever-inventive Matt Wilson on drums. The musical personality of each player flourishes in this thoughtfully assembled set of standards and originals. The up-beat title cut "Samba de Novembro" and the pensive "Rain Forest" were inspired by Rick's 1996 South American tour. Richard Rodgers' "My Romance," Vernon Duke's "I Can't Get Started" and Thelonious Monk's "Played Twice" are each given personal interpretations by the trio. Rick's minor key original "Duck, Duck, Blues!" gets its title from the march-like rhythm of its opening solo choruses. On Kenny Werner's "Autumn in Three" the guitar and piano weave a tapestry of sinuous lines in a duo interpretation inspired by a Jackson Pollack painting. Bill Evans' "Song for Helen" is presented here as a solo guitar vignette. The traditional folk tune "Careless Love" gets a new twist in this calypso-like rendition punctuated with interludes of New Orleans-style parade drum. Yosuke Inoue's bass is featured in the trio's arrangement of his own composition "West Side Waltz." The CD finishes with two Stone originals; the upbeat "Blues Enough" and the reflective "In Loving Memory," a ballad dedicated to Ted Dunbar and Attila Zoller and performed as a guitar/piano duet.

One of the best Jazz Guitar albums in recent years.......2005-04-22
If you like Jazz Guitar you are guaranteed to enjoy this CD. The opening track has more than a casual nod to Jim Hall's "Simple Samba" - with some exciting solos by Rick and Tardo Hamer.
I think Rick's version of "My Romance" is itself worth the price of the CD. The way he does the intro is unlike anything I've ever heared. It's a melody line with an improvised counterpoint line, but it almost sounds like a duet between two people. Really innovative.
There is one full solo piece on the album "Song For Helen" where Rick takes a completely different approach. Again, not like anything you've heared before, yet with the whole jazz guitar tradition built in.
Rick's sound is just beautiful. Dark and smooth but punchy and very even. The Comins guitar is not just a beauty on the cover, but it sounds amazing, and Rick used some interesting miking technique to make the pick sounds pretty audible, with a very unique effect.
Of all the tracks that are worth the price of the CD on their own, probably "Autumn in Three" is the most amazing. It's Rick and Tardo Hammer playing a duet that I am almost tempted to say pushes the envelope beyond the Jim Hall/Bill Evans duets, and I don't use that comparison lightly!
There are a lot of other great moments on the CD. Rick's time feel is fantastic. Always rhythmically varied, swinging and always in the pocket at any tempo and he's always going for interesting harmonic ideas rather than licks. A true master of jazz guitar.

Album Description
The lyrical passion of Enya meets the musical power of Evanescence... This is the way fans all over the world are describing JADE REDD. What is it about their lyrics that stimulates listeners to ask questions regarding their own life experience? What is it about their music that is beautiful and haunting at the same time? If you like Enya & Evanescence you will love JADE REDD.

Fantastic.......2007-03-08
Anyone who loves the rhythmic melodies of Enya, Miriam Stockley (Adiemus) or Amy Lee (Evanessence) should certainly get this CD (as difficult as it can be to find). The music is beautifully composed and the Madelena's vocals are liquidly smooth and silky. For me, the signature piece on the CD is "Siren" which is both seductive and yearning all at the same time.
If I have to wish for one thing on a follow-up CD, it would be for Madelena to reach a notch or two higher on the intensity scale much in the way Amy Lee does when going from softly mournful to powerfully undeniable.
This is a "must have" for any fan of female vocalists.
Rivers of Stone Review: What's all the Fuss About?.......2006-08-12
River's of Stone is a very serene, and boring album. The music was well written, but the lyrics almost put me to sleep. This album could have been better with another vocalist and a little better production. Vocalist Madalena voice is hauntingly bad.
Other's have compared Jade Redd to Evanessence, but I think that is comparison that is truely undeserved. The album is really an all aroung letdown.
Chilling and Beautiful.......2006-03-07
Wow, this is some of the most hauntingly beautiful music I've ever heard. Other reviewers have used the "Enya meets Evanescence" comparison, which seems appropriate to describe singer Madalena's vocal style. As a group though, Jade Redd is nowhere near as annoying (sorry) as Enya and doesn't rock anywhere near as much as Evanescence. To my ears, the closest point of comparison is Arjen Lucassen's Ambeon album. I'm also reminded of the atmosphere on Opeth's darkly beautiful Damnation album.
Rivers of Stone is a powerful album. It's both beautiful and haunting, largely due to Madalena's wonderful voice, which I would love to hear on a metal project. It has ambience, atmosphere, and emotion. It's tranquil, but in a "cemetery on a cold day" kind of way. I recommend this album to music fans who aren't tied down by genres and who are willing to try new things.
awesome.......2005-03-01
5 stars for Jay Ferguson and all. What a delight. Incredible musicianship and playing by all.
What a treat!!!!!!!!!!
Rivers Of Stone is an enchanting experience............2004-12-24
Jade Redd's "Rivers Of Stone" is a "must have" CD to add to your sonic library. Each and every original selection is a beautiful masterpiece of shimmering ,intense, yet calming melodies surrounding Madalena's soaringly expressive vocals. I'm also reminded of Loreena McKennitt and Madonna while listening to her , as well as Enya and Evanescence. The thoughtful and precise composition, production and instrumentation of James Briggs and Jay Ferguson continues to shine gently through all of the wonderful segments, just like the late afternoon sun beams rainbows through an exquisite clear glass wind chime. The lush and colorful photography of the jewel case artwork matches the tone and theme of Jade Redd perfectly. This is one CD that is both a pleasure to listen to and also to dreamily gaze at. Pour a glass of your favorite beverage, light some candles, lean back on plush satin pillows and relax....feel yourself softly drifting away down the rivers of stone....and completely enjoying the Jade Redd journey....wherever it may take you....

stone edge/stone age...what a great album.......2004-04-18
I found this album circa 1996 filed under 'folk' in Virgin, Oxford Street, London! I bought it solely on the 'look' of the packaging as I suspected it would be something leaning towards a new age style (which I tend to be more 'into')...and I was more or less right! The combination of French vocal and traditional/modern instrumentation makes for an interesting listen. Fans of Deep Forest and maybe Mike Oldfield should like it. Just for the record, as far as I am aware the name Stone Edge was used for the US market (to avoid clashing with the group 'Queens Of The Stone Age'). My CD is called 'Stone Age' and has a different, overally beige cover with a large circular 'symbol' in the middle. If listeners think this is a good album, then you should definitely acquire the other two later CDs which are, in my opinion, even better than this. I have been reliably informed that a 4th album is apparently in production and hopefully should be available for sale in the not too distant future.
Stone Edge.......2002-07-12
This is a very outstanding album to listen to -- the songs typically use many instruments, have a Celtic/Rock feel to them, and often take unexpected turns while maintaining an uplifting professional sound. This album was released in France and England by SONY and COLUMBIA, but never released in the U.S. I wonder why? This album is a sleeper, waiting to be discovered in the U.S. and elsewhere!
Name changed, style is the same.......2000-08-14
Here in Russia nobody knows this french bandÑmaybe I'm the only one. They're quite good in combining of celtic/electronic/brittany/artrock styles. Two years ago they changed name to Stone Age and produced one more album - Chronovoyagers or Time Travellers (amazon.com has japanese release with 2 bonus tracks). It's even more interesting than the Stone Edge. They also have very beautiful site...for a pity, French-language only.
Inform them of the double standard........2000-06-15
There's unfortunately (if not shamefully) quite a lot going against Stone Edge, but it's not all their fault. First, why are they erroneously pigeonholed in general new age music! Potenially large followings in international and electronica are thusly thwarted. But they don't help themselves either. One would really have to have heard of them (quite unlikely) to buy the album anyway; the song titles give little away except that they are probably foreign, in cahoots with Madam Avant and her guardsmen. I didn't expect the music to be half as good as it is.
The double standard is that unless you're a mindless pop band, you've got to use the full 80 minutes of your CD to be competitive (regrets if French music must always start on vinyl). They have the musical diversity (bagpipes, keyboards, accordions, etc.) to extend that far, and it's a tease that this doesn't. If they can up the electronic influence without sacrificing their instruments, tone-down the lyrics further, and leave sappy English tunes to the likes of Thomas Dolby, their future looks bright (but I see no other albums). Besides DF, fans should try Transglobal Underground, Loop Guru, Afro-Celt Soundsystem, Tulku, Dario G, or even late Future Sound of London.
Best of Celtic.......2000-01-15
Stone Edge is an exceedingly wonderful group that incorporates beautiful Celtic folk music with western dance and electronica; similar to Deep Forest in many respects. One rarely finds better Celtic music than this.
