Album Description
Porter Wagoner is a much misunderstood artist. Singing about the peaks and troughs of the human experience from inside a purple sequinned Nudie suit he has created the most extraordinary catalogue of any country music artist, and quite possibly any popular performer, ever. Don't believe me? Then check out the skull cracking and heart rendering reverberations of The Rubber Room, the troubled soul of George Leroy Chickashea, the desperate howl that is Lonely Coming Down and the seething hurt that is Fairchild. Yet amongst this human train-wreck there are jewels of burning pathos and profound spirituality like Moments of Meditation and Little Boy's Prayer. It is indeed this collision of an image that is at times admittedly pure kitsch, with songs and a delivery that are soul-shakingly sincere, that makes Porter Wagoner perhaps the most compelling recording artist of all time. Still not convinced? Then go now, right now, and listen to The Party by Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton. For the first time the darker, more poetic highlights of Porter Wagoner's astounding career have been compiled with love and care, featuring a slew of tracks never before sighted on CD. Once you have heard this album you will never be quite the same ever again!Psychotronic, dark, heartfelt country... with a touch of showbiz! First time on CD! Deluxe collectors 16 page package featuring original LP artwork and exclusive liner notes. All tracks are remastered in 2006 from the original master tapes! Compiled and curated by noted musician (Snog, Soma, Black Lung) and film composer David Thrussell.

NO THIS AINT UNCLE PEN OR OLE SLEWFOOT !.......2007-07-29
This is the rubber room and I love it ! Porter Wagoner is one of my all time favorites because he's one of those truly rural singers that you just don't hear anymore. His singing and narration have a sincere , genuine quality that cannot be imitated. I was already familiar with "The Caroll County Accident" , "The Cold Hard facts Of Life" , "Jim Johnson" and "My Many Hurried Southern Trips" all of which are excellent. The other 25 songs on this disc are really good as well.I enjoyed "George Leroy Chickashea" and "Indian Creek" which would both be considered politically incorrect by today's standards. This disc includes a booklet that features the album covers from which the songs on this compilation were selected. This is a great package of Porter Wagoner's more adult themed material.I also highly recommend the new album,Wagonmaster.
RUBBER ROOM.......2007-07-17
This was a very good C D. Music like it used to be real glad I got it
Pictures From Life's Darker Side.......2007-04-28
The fact that Porter Wagoner brought non-other than James Brown in to perform at The Grand Ol' Opry should give you some indication that he is much more than a pompador & purple Nudie suit.
Johnny Cash once remarked, "No one tells a story like Porter Wagoner" & the likes of "Fairchild" & "Jim Johnson" are all the proof you need. Murder, lust, madness,& sheer unmitigated heartbreak abound here. In short, this as macabre as Country Music gets. With perhaps, just the right amount of unintentional kitch thrown in to sweeten the deal. Regardless of that, the sincerity of of "Moments Of Meditation" & "Lonely Comin' Down" cannot be denied.
Though perhaps somewhat overshadowed by a certain tall haired protege, many of the songs here reveal not only a consummate craftsmen, but also someone willing to push the boundries of his genre. I'd be hard pressed to find another song quite like "Rubber Room" filed under "Country". At times, it borders on 60's Psyche. Fortunately, Wagoner's forays into Disco have not been included.
Songs like, "Fairchild" & "The First Mrs. Jones" have more in common with the Pulp Noir novels of Jim Thompson than anything you might have seen on Hee Haw. Despite sometimes lush arrangements, these songs capture the true bleakness lying behind Country's shopworn cliches. Many of the songs here bring a chill as they tickle the funnybone.
While Hank Williams Sr.'s Luke The Drifer recordings are an obvious influence, I'd say it all lies somewhere inbetween a Countryfied Serge Gainsbourg & Leon Payne's "Psycho".
Maudlin, macabre & heartfelt, this is one of the finest Wagoner collections on offer. Not to mention some of the darkest stuff to ever come out of Nashville. It's rapdily becoming one of my favorite Country albums of all time. Much more than the man who introducted us to Dolly Parton, here's proof that Wagoner is truely one of the most underrated figures in Country Music.
Who knew life was so desperate in the country?.......2007-04-20
Desperation, poverty, adultery, insanity, murder... they're all present and accounted for. Vintage country music is great stuff! An excellent collection from one of country music's unsung greats. Hipsters will love this...
Haunting Country Storytelling .......2007-03-29
First off, this is not a greatest hits package, so if you are interested in that, you might want to look at some of the RCA packages that are excellent. But . . .
Storytelling has long been a basic facet of Southern life and country music strongly reflects the storytelling infleunce. There was a time when those stories weren't all happy, fluffy pieces like you will hear today. Go far enough back in country music history and murder songs abound, some repentant, others defiant. "Rubber Room" compiles a ranging collection of story songs recorded by Porter Wagoner. The truth is that these songs aren't always pleasant and they aren't feel good. But they plunge into the depths of the human condition with deep insight. What you get is a portrait of an extremely strong artist performing some powerfully written songs. Summarizing them is difficult so I would say they best thing you could do is experience this CD. Everything from miscegenation to adultery to the paralyzing impact of alcohol is explored here. And it helps to underscore what all of us Southerners have known, Porter Wagoner is a fine singer and interpeter of song.

Electric Lucifer - Finally Available on CD!.......2007-06-01
Like many people who have recently discovered the music of Bruce Haack, I first learned about Haack after watching the "Haack: The King of Techno" documentary on the Documentary Channel. As a keyboard player myself and someone who has an interest in vintage synthesizer and electronic music technology, the documentary really peaked my interest in Bruce Haack. As such, I've recently bought a number of his albums on CD, although as I've learned, building up a collection of Haack's albums isn't the easiest thing to do, since a majority of his albums are available only as Japanese import CDs and not always readily stocked by US online retailers. When I started seeking out Haack's albums a couple of months ago, I was disappointed to find that "Electric Lucifer" had never been released on CD. However, I was pleasantly surprised to learn shortly thereafter that the album was, in fact, going to be released on CD, so I immediately placed my pre-order through Amazon and received the CD yesterday.
Although I had already heard a few of the "Electric Lucifer" tracks on the "Hush Little Robot" compilation CD, it was great to be able to listen to the original album in its entirety. The record seems to have been touted as somewhat of a concept album where "Powerlove" conquers all evil, although I personally wasn't able to discern any type of distinct storyline throughout the album. Nonetheless, the album is full of original, Haack-esque electronica, which was my main draw to Haack's works in the first place. In terms of the album's electronic music aspect, I find the opening track, "Electric to me Turn", to be one of the most interesting tracks on the albums. Lyrically speaking, I think "Word Game" is a very clever track. As a bonus, this CD also includes a 1970 radio interview with Bruce Haack, a previously unreleased alternate version of "Electric to me Turn", and on top of that, very interesting and extensive liner notes.
For anyone interested in the works of Bruce Haack, I'd highly recommend this album. Kudos to the Omni Recording Corporation for remastering and re-releasing this gem!

Album Description
27 Track Cd Anthology of Nashville Psyche-Pop from legendary songwriter! Best known as a stellar songwriter (Tobacco Road, Indian eservation, This Little Bird, Break My Mind etc etc, ad infinitum!!!) John D. Loudermilk was also an accomplished, inspiring singer-songwriter before the term even existed. The Open Mind of John D. Loudermilk is his 1969 psychedelic Nashville opus! Sitars blaze and otherworldly voices rail on the opening cut Goin' To Hell On A Sled, but this is no mere wigged-out cash-in record. With a palette ranging from the gentle organ tones of Laura, to the striking relevance of The Jones' and Peace of Heart, few records of such wit, compassion and intelligence have ever been committed to tape. Remastered and restored with love and care this album is presented here for the first time on CD. Present also are a slew of tracks from Loudermilk's astounding and appropriately titled 1965 album Sings a Bizarre Collection of the Most Unusual Songs. In the mood for a Christmas tune about radioactive snow? Then try No Playing in the Snow Today. A hunter's graveside epiphany perhaps? Certainly, that would be The Little Grave. Psychedelic, evocative, intelligent Nashville pop from one of the greatest songwriters of all time! First time on CD! Deluxe collectors 16 page full colour package featuring original LP artwork, exclusive liner notes and original artist's track notes. All tracks are remastered 2006 from the original master tapes! Compiled and curated by noted musician (Snog, Soma, Black Lung) and film composer David Thrussell.

A true masterpiece - remaster is great except:.......2007-04-21
According to the liner notes "Remastered and restored with love and care"
Not bad, except that side 1 and side 2 of the original LP have been reversed (the original LP side one started with tracks 7 to 12 and side 2 was tracks 1 to 6). However, I will forgive this error as this is a great CD issue and the bonus tracks are great and plentiful.
A true original!
Loudermilk! A Great American Institution!.......2007-02-18
I have been listening to the great Loudermilk since 65' and I never get tired of his sweet sound. The man is a Genius! I just can't express the delight I have for his music. Vocalist/Song Writer and one wonderful muscian! I used to wait in great anticipation for every new album he would release. Mr. Loudermilk thank you so much for giving this Brooklyn N.Y. guy so many years of musical enjoyment. I thank the Lord he has blest you with such wonderful talent.
A delicious and dark desent into Loudermilk's "Open Mind" and "Bizzare Songs".......2007-01-05
My parents had the original "Open Mind of John D Loudrmilk" and "John D Loudermilk Sings a Collection of the Most Unusual Songs" LP's and I grew up listening to these wonderfully dark, haunting, mind-delving and somewhat funky songs. Ever heard the Raiders' smash hit "Indian Reservation"? Well, the original version is Loudermilk's "Lament Of The Cherokee Reservation Indian" and it's just a folky/boogie-woogiely acoustic JDL accompanied by brushes --- and will blow you away! Other classics such as "Little Bird" and 'Going to Hell on a Sled" are amoung the CD's bumper crop of 27 nuggets (only 11 are shown on this Amazon page). Have a stiff drink, hug your lover, leave a little room for dancing and buy this CD!
A masterpiece: finally available on CD.......2006-12-30
The Open Mind of John D. Loudermilk has been one of my favorite albums of all time since my Dad first brought it home in 1970. I have been carrying around a turntable for 20 years, mostly just to play my cherished vinyl copy of this album. I am ecstatic to see it finally released on CD and can't wait to hear the extra material and check out the book. Loudermilk was a singer songwriter, back before any of us really knew what that was.

HENSON CARGILL
A VERY WELL TRAVELLED MAN
JACK BLANCHARD AND MISTY MORGAN
LIFE AND DEATH (AND ALMOST EVERYTHING ELSE)
BY DEREK WALMSLEY
Country music is filled with artists whose long, hard careers are remembered for just one crossover hit - and the mission of the new label of Australia's David Thrussell (of Snog, Black Lung and Soma) is to dig beneath such novelties to see what happened as they dropped off the radar. As might be expected, the truth about such artists is often stranger than their fictions. Jack Blanchard and Misty Morgan are remembered for their 1970 hit "The Tennessee Bird Walk", but Life and Death (And Almost Everything Else) covers an entire bizarre career of murmured, bitchy duets, like a married couple breaking up over karaoke after too many tequilas. Their schtick endures best on their occasionally wistful Burt Bacharach-esque moments such as "The Dum Song".
Much stronger is Henson Cargill's retrospective A Very Well Travelled Man. His trademark laconic delivery has an undeniable edge of humour, timing his deadpan punchline perfectly on "None Of My Business" - "I read about a girl, I forgot about her name/ she was screaming for help, and ... nobody came/ but it's none of my business." But the epic "Reprints (Plastic People)" - "All choose the same set, the same restaurant/ all choose exactly the same moment to run/ all thought in each mind, must be back at one" - is a reductio ad absurdum of modern life that's as incisive as Jacques Tati's bewildered Hulot in Playtime. The description `Zen Country' is well earned and the retrospective is timely.
A Cult Artist Waiting To Happen........2006-01-02
By Jo Roberts
The Age
December 29, 2005
Anthology of Henson Cargill's country crooning shows the man is a cult waiting to happen.
Henson Cargill was a lawyer, rancher and deputy sheriff before deciding to pursue a career in country music in the 1960s. And a fine career choice it was too, although not one that made the Oklahoma crooner a household name.
A new 27-track anthology of Cargill's catalogue compiled by - surprisingly - Melbourne electronica guru David Thrussell (Snog, Black Lung), A Very Well Travelled Man, will make you wonder how we missed Cargill the first time around.
While most country artists were singing about lost loves, cheap whiskey and lock-ups, Cargill was railing against child neglect (his 1968 chart-topper, Skip a Rope), social apathy ( None of My Business), racism ( Going Backwards) and mindless conformity ( Reprints).
He did visit country motifs, such as in the love an' leave 'em Johnny One Time and Four Shades of Love, but it was as a social commentator he made his mark. Complemented by that sultry, heavily reverbed production of the era and more key changes than you thought possible in one album, Henson Cargill is surely a cult just waiting to happen.
Long overdue.......2006-01-02
Henson Cargill was a smooth-voiced native of Oklahoma whose first charted hit was "Skip A Rope", a monster hit which spent 5 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Country Chart in 1968 and also was a major pop hit. Unfortunately, he never again approached that level of success, with his only top ten hit being "None of My Business" which reached #8 in 1969. His other top 20 songs were "Row, Row, Row" (the immediate follow up to "Skip A Rope")which reached #11, and "The Most Uncomplicated Goodbye" which rerched #18.
The lack of lasting chart success did not mean a lack of quality in subsequent recordings. Cargill is sometimes referred to as the 'Zen Cowboy' due to the deeply philosophical lyrics of the songs that attracted Cargill's interest. Songs such as "Reprints (Plastic People)", "Skip A Rope", "None of My Business" "This Generation Shall Not Pass" and "I Wonder Where They'll Sleep Tonight" reflected a degree of social consciousness rarely encountered in country singers of that era. Cargill was classified as folk-country and marketed to both areas. Production on these Monument recordings isn't hard country usually lacking steel guitar and fiddles.
I only saw him on TV once, and he didn't seem to be a terribly charismatic performer, although with his vocal quality that SHOULD NOT have mattered. This collection only covers his tenure on Monument but it contains 7 of his 8 top 40 songs (missing "Some Old Cailfornia Memory" which reached #28 on the Atlantic label in 1973). Twenty-seven songs, all of them good.

THE Country Reissue CD of 2007 - Three Classic NORMA JEAN Albums.......2007-07-22
I was thrilled to discover this CD was released! Norma Jean, indisputably one of the greatest female country singers of alltime, hasn't received much attention since she retired from the Porter Wagoner Show in 1967 (and was replaced by the then unknown Dolly Parton). Norma Jean continued recording for RCA until 1973 and released about 20 albums during her ten year stint on the label and this CD contains three of those on one disc.
To paraphrase a popular phrase, this is not your granddaughter's country music, this is about as watered down as 200 proof whiskey. Norma Jean is COUNTRY to the bone like Kitty Wells and classic Loretta Lynn yet thoroughly her own woman. Some of this stuff you could square dance to ("Life of a Poor Boy")! Indeed, the songs are all over the hard country subject map from cheating ("Another Man Loved Me Last Night"), boozing ("I Threw Away the Rose") to mama ("There Won't Be Any Patches in Heaven") and new babies ("Tippy Toeing"); death (the unforgettable "Hundred Dollar Funeral"), no-good husbands ("Promises, Promises"), recitations ("Old Doc Brown"), sex ("In The Park After Dark") to traditional values ("Home Made Love"), racy double entendres ("Somebody's Gonna Plow Your Field"), to feminism ("Truck Driving Woman") and all of it sung by Norma Jean with sincerity and frankness.
This CD combines three albums, 1972's I GUESS THAT COMES FROM BEING POOR (one of the first "concept" albums by a country artist, all of the songs are tied to poverty) (tracks 1-10), 1968's honky-tonkin' BODY AND MIND (tracks 11-22), and 1970's ANOTHER MAN LOVED ME LAST NIGHT (tracks 23-30 and regrettably two tracks short of the complete album, a curious decision. I'm particularly disappointed because it's one of the few Norma Jean LPs I don't own!)
There's so much great stuff here it's hard to choose the best but "Hundred Dollar Funeral" is so extraordinary it deserves special mention. Norma Jean also does a fine job with on no less than three Merle Haggard songs ("Hungry Eyes", "All of Me Belongs to You", and especially "I Threw Away the Rose"). She also does a unique spin on successor Dolly Parton's classic "Coat of Many Collars". She is always believable, whether singing the joyous "Tippy Toeing" or the embittered "You Wouldn't Know Love".
This pure country music was recorded at the height of the smooth "countrypolitan" crossover sound which was completely alien to Norma Jean. Overshadowed at the time by more citified country stars like Tammy Wynette, Jeannie C. Riley, and Lynn Anderson, these albums lack any major hits for her (for those see her BEST OF NORMA JEAN cd which is now out-of-print and going for top dollar) but she is every bit the solid singer she was on her greatest hits here. Country music just doesn't get any finer or more real than Norma Jean.

Album Description
Bobby Bare is, in some ways, a deceptive artist. His smooth, beguiling baritone and accomplished Countrypolitan productions sometimes tend to overshadow the fact that he is an artist of immense substance. Two of his most impressive country-concept albums are presented here, lovingly restored and remastered from the original RCA Victor master tapes, with a number of rare and poignant extra tracks. "A Bird Named Yesterday" was originally issued in 1967 and is, quite simply, stunning. Through humour, stark portraiture and heartfelt ballads Bobby Bare places himself in direct opposition to the ill winds of the modern world. "Somebody Bought My Old Hometown" is probably the closest Nashville has ever come to an anti-corporate diatribe and "They Covered Up the Old Swimming Hole" is a rant against the urban sprawl disguised as charming hick nostalgia. Smooth as silk, wise and warm, but with the dark heart of a Hillbilly Anarchist Provocateur, "A Bird Named Yesterday" is a revelation! "Talk Me Some Sense" is a brooding, nihilistic work, announced by a lonesome harmonica wail and over-brimming with lost souls and desperation. Recorded in 1965 (and released in 1966), it is as troubled (and confused) as the times it was borne from. "Passin' Through", "You Can't Stop the Wild Wind from Blowing" and "Heaven Help my Soul" all cast Bare as a loner, buffeted from town to town, in search of the things he can never find. Most tracks make their first appearance on CD including a number of very rare "45" only cuts! A mighty and compelling collection. First time on CD! Deluxe collectors 16 page full colour package featuring original LP artwork and exclusive liner notes. All tracks are remastered 2006 from the original master tapes! Compiled and curated by noted musician (Snog, Soma, Black Lung) and film composer David Thrussell.

Real value for money.......2007-01-11
This a real value for money CD comprises two of Bobby Bare's earlier albums "Bird Named Yesterday" and "Talk Me Some sense" plus 7 extra bonus tracks.
"Bird Named Yesterday" undoubtedly is the very first concept album. It is also my favourite Bobby Bare album. The very nostalgic story songs suit Bobby Bare laid back voice and style 100%. Makes you want to hear the songs over and over again. The tunes are all very easy to like and sing-along to.
The chorus by veteran chorus group Anita Singers really add quality to the songs.
The songs from "Bird Named Yesterday" are excellent and each telling a different favourite past such as the "Old Swimming Hole", "The Old Home Town", and "I've Got a Thing about Train". "The Old Gang's Gone" and "Air Conditional Song" are my two favourites in this CD full of memories. The more you listen to it, the more you will want to hear it over and over again. It will just grow on you. That I can guarantee you!
Songs from the album "Talk Me Some Sense" are mainly Folk-Country songs which Bobby Bare was a pioneer after his hit "500 Miles Away From Home". Bobby Bare did excellent version of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" and also Johnny Cash's hit "The Long Black Veil". "Little Bit Later On Down the Line" and "Heaven Help My Soul" are two songs worth mentioning.
This CD also includes 7 extra bonus tracks which are not usually available on compilation CD of Bobby Bare such as the two nice hit singles, "Town That Broke My Heart" and "Sandy Crying Again". Buy it and you shall not be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
if you like music, this album is for you.......2005-10-11
Alright, so trey flubbs the arpegios at the beginning of yem, but parts of the yem, like the lyrical section and later solos are some of the best out there, they all just rip it up. Then theres the reba and the colonel forbin/fly famous, possibly the best versions of these songs.
The Remain in Light is practically flawless, Trey nails all of the abnormal solos with his own twist, and Gordon slaps all the bass lines while still keeping to the heads themes. Born under punches and houses in motion are spectacular, and the version of The Great Curve is perhaps one of the best songs of all time, the first solo is perfect, and the second goes into this ridiculous jam, which the horns add to a lot.
To top it off, the open the third set with a sick Brother, and keep it fresh until the simple, the song part of Simple is pretty solid, and if you wait through the five minutes or so after that part (through the long bass drum and keyboard jam that doesnt change until about 11:00) trey comes in with this really intense pitch and they go into one of their best jams of all time... This show is easily one of their best performed.
One word: Reba.......2005-09-19
Ive listened to almost all of the live phish series, as well as having 30+ additional shows on discs. Of all of them, this is the best version of Reba I have ever heard(though the white album show's reba is quite comparable). From the moment the vocals start, you can tell this is going to be a good one. Trey is on like I have never seen before, his guitar is just singing, his vocals are right on the mark, its completely awe inspiring. All 15 minutes remain interesting, not trance playing, but jams that really go places.
Whats even better, is that the rest of the show is essentially as good. As a talking heads fan who has both this cover and the actual album, I can say that phish really tackles this one.The other halloween covers, especially the white album, honestly arent better than the original. This, in my opinion, is. They just nail it on the head and take it a step further.
This is one of the peaks of phish. They're starting to move away from their early humor and eclecticism and heading towards the more focused funk of the wonderful 97. You get some bonus gamehendge material in colonel forbins ascent > fly famous mockingbird, a great little tidbit. This has some excellent funky bass from Gordon, superb trey playing(especially compared to post hiatus), fishman holding it together as always, and page doing well also(page's best stuff is the tweezer set from LivePhish 18, check it out).
If you are a phish fan at any level beyond farmhouse and bouncin round the room, you should check this out. Maybe listen to a live one or slip, stitch, and pass first, but this may well be the best live phish release available and would get my hands on it as soon as possible
need right discs.......2005-08-06
You guys sent me the cd case but when I opened the cd, it had the Las Vegas show. I ordered another one and it happened again if you could send me the Omni show I will be happy to rate it. I am not very happy with the problem I have had trying to get the right cd, or the one that I ordered. Could you please send me the right Discs I already have the cover. If you look at my records you will see I have ordered two Atlanta Phish shows and both of them have been the right case but when I opened the cd case it was the Las Vegas show. Please Please help me out with this problem, I really want the Omni show so please send it.
The tapes don't lie...required listening........2004-12-02
I was lucky enough to have attended this, and with the exception of Big Cypress Y2K, it was the best Phish show I've been to. When I bought this volume of Live Phish, I was hoping I didn't build up that Halloween night in '96 TOO much in my head over the years...but after hearing it, it only confirmed that the boys were indeed on fire. Talking Heads' "Remain In Light" album was right in the bands' wheelhouse, and surpasses the other albums Phish covered on Halloween ("Crosseyed and Painless" even re-appeared several times in future shows & has become a fan favorite). As for the other material, standards like "You Enjoy Myself", "Reba", "Down With Disease", and "Maze" are cream of the crop versions, and rarely is there a weak moment anywhere else on these CDs. This is a "desert island" show, so pick this up NOW...
Live Talking Heads album included.......2004-06-08
A wonderful version of Remain in Light. It's like getting a brand new Talking Heads album as a present in 2004!

Customer Reviews:
Sublime!.......2006-04-27
The composer: Heinrich Schutz, contemporary of Montiverdi, student of Giovanni Gabrielli, devout Catholic, and expat in Venice. Famous in his day and remains well-known. Fled to Venice to escape the 30 Years' War in his native Germany.
The Work: Symphoni? Sacr? I was written after Schutz returned to Venice. It was, in format and title, an homage to Gabrielli. A sublime piece of semi-ecclesiastical work, it is a setting for voice and instruments of many of Schutz' favorite verses from scripture, heavy on Song of Solomon, so expect a love theme. The whole work is superb but track 5- Anima Mea Liquifacta Est, Track 10- O, Quam Tu Pulchram Est, and 11- Veni di Libanon, are particularly beautiful. You can almost hear the mingling of divine and human love in the Symphoni? Sacr? I.
The performance: Period instruments are wonderful and the performance is flawless. As with their other recordings, Concerto Palatino does a wonderful job.
The Product: 2 CD's, both fine quality. Copious notes and full libretto with translations.
Flaws: Translations of the Latin are abominable in places, only fair in others. Translations to the English are generally only so-so, to German are consistently inept.
Faultless performances.......2005-12-03
I must agree with my Australian friend, as I have also owned this recording for years and regularly come back to it. The motets from Symphoniae Sacrae I are small in scale, but are all extremely beautiful. Apart from his Psalmen Davids (1619), this collection is my favorite of Schutz's published output.
The music is unfailingly expressive and innovative, plus the performances given are perfectly judged and do great justice to these fantastic works. There is constant variety of voices and instrumentation such that no two motets share the same scoring. I especially like In lectio per noctes which employs three curtals under soprano and alto voices. It's an exquisite texure.
This is a recording any fan of Schutz should not be without.
Sublime music and perfect interpretations.......2005-11-03
This recording is a 'desert island disc' of mine. I have played it over and over again since I bought it in 1992.
There are many masterpieces here.
Fili me, Absalon and Attendite, popule meus - each featuring four trombones, solo bass voice and basso continuo. Anima mea liquifacta est/Adjuro vos filiæ Jerusalem - for two mute cornetts, two tenors and basso continuo (perhaps the best work in the set?) and the extroverted Buccinate in neomenia tuba/Jubilate Deo - both parts for two tenors and bass singers, trumpet, cornett, dulcian and basso continuo.
The two works for three dulcians and alto and soprano voices are very atmospheric and sensual.
Some of the works feature a pair of violins accompanying the singers and these are also very beautiful works.
The Symphoniæ Sacræ I of Heinrich Schütz is one of the greatest collections of works in the entire 17th century. Schütz explores a range of human emotions and moods in these works and does so with great clarity and sophistication.
The performances on these two CDs are beyond reproach. I cannot recommend this recording too highly to you - it is a great recordings of great music.
Believe me!
As with others by Concerto Palatino, First Rate.......2000-06-14
These concertos are grander and more expansive than the Kleine Geistliche Konzerte of a few years later, and show Schutz at his most expressive and emotionally intense form.
The performances are excellent and the sound quality very fine.
What more is there to say? If you appreciate Schutz, this is a must have.

OFFBEAT, BUT GOOD LISTENING!.......2007-02-05
FINALLY WAS ABLE TO GET A COLLECTION OF JACK BLANCHARD & MISTY MORGAN. I'VE ALWAYS ENJOYED THEIR COMICAL SONGS. THIS ONE IS A GOOD MIX OF DIFFERENT STYLES. ENJOYABLE, YET OFFBEAT.
I lke this CD.......2006-04-27
I like this CD. most of all, that it has Tennesee Birdwalk on it, probably that is the best known hit from these two. I must listen to this CD a few more times to determine what I think of the quality of the recordiing. first time around it sounds pretty good.
An album not to be missed.......2005-12-02
This album is a superb compilation of the best of Jack Blanchard & Misty Morgan's songs many of which have been worldwide hit records. I discovered them early in 2005 and I am familiar with many of these songs from their previous albums which I own, but I am delighted to hear the additional songs which I had not heard before. Jack & Misty are uniquely talented Country music artists. Their harmonies are both superb and distinctive with Jack's bass voice blending so well with Misty's rich alto.
Jack is an real artist with words having the ability to 'paint a picture with words'. He composed the majority of the songs they sing and their songs cover the whole range of life experience, as the title of the album so aptly says "Life & Death {and everything else in between}".
Interspersed with the more serious songs are some of their 'crazy' songs which so well illustrate their terrific sense of humour. These include Tennessee Birdwalk, which was a #1 hit and won them a Grammy Nomination in 1970, Humphrey The Camel, Legendary Chicken Fairy, If Eggs Had Legs, the catchy Dum Song and Cows (just listen to the lyrics) :) If you share their sense of humour you will not disappointed.
Other great tracks which relate to life's experiences include The Clock of St. James, You've Got Your Troubles (I've Got Mine), the poignant There Must Be More To Life (Than Growing Old), It Seems Like There Ain't No Going Home, Shadows Of The Leaves, Big Black Bird (Spirit Of My Love), Somewhere In Virginia In The Rain, Changin' Times, Place In Your Mind and Sunset Train. You can easily relate to the experiences in life that inspired these songs.
The two songs new to me, Don't It Make You Want To Go Home and Chapel Hill, are welcome additions which also tug at the heart strings.
Jack & Misty are both accomplished keyboard artists playing much of their own background music - Jack also plays guitars. They are accompanied by some of the best musicians around.
Jack & Misty have to be heard to be appreciated. Their songs just get better with the playing. They have something about them that gives them a "must listen again ... and again .... and again" quality. No how many times I listen to them I just NEVER, ever get tired of hearing them. I just grow to love them more each day.
Many of these songs can be heard on their website [...] ... just in case you need convincing.
Don't miss out on this musical treat.
