It's been nearly a decade since Loreena McKennitt's last studio album, The Book of Secrets, but An Ancient Muse picks up the caravan exactly where she left off on her mystical journey through the cultures of the Middle East and northern Sahara. The Canadian singer opens this album the same way as she did her last two recordings: with an incantation, calling out in a wordless voice across an echoing space, cleansing the air and the mind. What follows is a lot like those albums as well, a pan-global excursion centered on Middle Eastern themes and instruments cast into a dramatic exotica. Oud, dumbek, kanoun, hurdy-gurdy, duduk, nyckleharpe (a Swedish-keyed fiddle), and other ancient sounds from the region and beyond ornament her music, though "ornament" might no longer be accurate. With the exception of Hugh Marsh's gypsy violin solos and a handful of other players, it's the Western instruments that serve as ornaments on An Ancient Muse. McKennitt long ago evolved the Celtic sound that launched her career. She's virtually abandoned the harp, which hasn't appeared on her CDs since 1991's The Visit. The lone uillean pipe on "Beneath a Phrygian Sky" sounds like an echo calling from the McKennitt's past. Nevertheless, the Celtic ballad form remains central to her music, and she still draws inspiration from ye olde writers of the British Isles. Lyrics from Sir Walter Scott adorn "The English Ladye and the Knight," recalling "The Lady of Shalott." But despite McKennitt's soaring alto, the tale drags under the dirge-like meter and ponderous arrangement. The epic track of this album is the aforementioned "Beneath a Phrygian Sky," with distorted electric guitar accents and an acoustic guitar melody carrying McKennitt on another journey into her romanticized version of the ancient world. --John Diliberto

Although Loreen McKinnet is one of my very favorite singers this is not one of my favorite albums.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds A Bit Like M E H D I.......2007-07-26

Oh, Wow! This is a cd that will be liked by all who enjoy M E H D I, E N Y A or even Loreena Mckinnetts Previous works. It is the very essence of good new age. So tranquil, yet so spirited, this cd is a refreshing break from my well-worn collection, I just keep wanting to listen to it over and over again. I am amazed! It reminds me somewhat of Celtic Women, but still very unique. This is music to the soul. Absolutely relaxing, as well.

4 out of 5 stars Ancient Muse Review.......2007-07-25

This is classic, recognizable McKinnett. If you are a fan, you'll like it. If you are not, you will say, "What's new?"

1 out of 5 stars Not my style...!.......2007-07-18

Sounds from the celtic music craze, zillions of years ago. We've heard it all before. And yes... they do call that music and have the nerve to label it under jazz...! Only one piece of advice keep your money or buy something else with it, unless you need a musical decor for cheap smooching.

5 out of 5 stars Loreena is back in Style.......2007-07-13

Loreena McKennitt is one of my all time favorite recording artists...and she truly deserves the title of artist...she writes, arranges and performs her own music in her own studio, and her voice is gorgeous, her music lush, exotic, rich in complexity and arrangement, and just a delight for the soul. It is wonderful to have her in good tune, sharing her melodic and stirring "musings" not in an ancient way at all, but in a modern, satisfying and imaginitive manner that communicates the deepest aspects of her talents directly to our own hearts!

Second only to Riverdance as an international Irish showbiz phenomenon, previous installments of this Platinum-selling extravaganza have become beloved PBS standards. The original buxom quartet of female singers, Lisa, Maev, Orla, and Chloe, have duly been joined by Hayley and are, as usual, backed by a full symphony orchestra and choir, plus enough traditional instruments (the house fiddler, Mairead, is a powerhouse) to keep things legit. The material ranges from folkloric ("Dúlaman" is best known from Clannad's legendary rendering), to a standard from another Celtic nation ("Caledonia," Dougie McLean's love letter to his native Scotland), to classical lite (Handel's poignant "Laschia Ch'io Pianga"), to movie hits ("Somewhere Over The Rainbow" in a delicately lovely, a cappella, close-harmony treatment), to homegrown New Age (Enya's "Newgrange"). Most tracks are produced to turn, presented in the aural equivalent of Technicolor or day-glo, in which colors pop while diverging ever so slightly from nature. In short, although the album offers fresh material, it covers old ground -- but this is exactly what the act's target audience expects and desires. Fans of acoustic folk would likely find the prevailing aesthetic a touch garish, but fans of Sarah Brightman and Il Divo will be diverted and thrilled. The deluxe package offers four bonus tracks, three of them live, plus a silver claddagh charm. --Christina Roden

Loved the range of voices. Had already seen the show on PBS and have the previous CD and DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest CD ever.......2007-07-10

I have never heard such beautiful harmony and vocals! The music was just wonderful! The orchestra was outstanding! I have already decided that "The Prayer" is going to be sung at my wedding. I can't help but cry every time I hear that song sung by Chloe (I have already bought the sheet music for it:))There were a couple of songs that got a little boring but for the most part it was GREAT!!! The DVD is magnificent as well! It has about 6 or 7 more songs.

5 out of 5 stars A great continuation of the first Celtic Woman album........2007-06-28

This is a CD that can be enjoyed by all who like M E H DI, E N Y A or even Loreena Mckinnett. After seeing them on PBS, getting the first CD and seeing them in concert I am hooked. These ladies can SING!
The bonus songs make the album definatly worth the extra few dollars...it includes the fun, upbeat, songs Celtic Woman performs at the ending of their live shows....I was so hoping they would put them on an album. Live or not, the sound quality is PERFECTION, they sound studio quality. I was a little hesistant at first about the addition of the new member...but she rounds the group up nicely.

We already own the first Celtic Woman DVD and CD (also seen on public tv and purchased thru Amazon)and this is an amazing sequel to the original. All new music and a beautiful setting for this irish music. The women's voices are ethereal, very much worth listening to and watching over and over again.

The 2007 entry in Armin Van Buuren's State of Trance series takes awhile to get going, but eventually kicks in with the blissful epics that have made him one of the world's most popular DJs. On mix records, Van Buuren usually expresses the two sides of his DJ personality via the two-disc format; disc one is filled with frothy vocal trance, the other is populated with more progressive material. SoT 2007 stays true to form. This time out though, there's an obvious disparity in quality between the two. Van Buuren goes downright cheesy for his lighter disc one (called "on the beach"), and with a few fleeting exceptions like Kalopsia's "The Blizzard," it's pretty forgettable. However, the second, more progressive disc ("in the club") improves noticeably as AVB leads off with two self-produced bombs "Miserere" and "Rush Hour." It still has a high cheese level to be sure, but its excesses are cut with relative dark matter like the lovely mashup in the middle of the disc, consisting primarily of Reh Mundi's "Perspective" and Ronski Speed's "The Space We Are." As with contemporaries like DJ Tiësto, Van Buuren seems to believe he needs to be all things to all people, but his more commercial instincts are too pronounced here, leaving his more devoted fan base with only half a mix to enjoy. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

Van Buuren is one of the biggest names in dance music and the current #3 DJ in the world (as voted by a DJ Mag poll). He continually pushes the bar with fresh trance sounds. This is the next chapter in his annual mix album series; a two-disc continuous mix of this year's hottest trance tunes from a stellar lineup. Alongside Armin's superior mixing skills, "A State Of Trance" is an inspiring and uplifting aural experience.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2007-08-04

pretty fantastic stuff, disc 1 is a little better than disc 2, but still great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-07-25

I am somewhat newer to trance and am still getting accustomed to the lingo.

I read some of the other reviews before I listened to the album. I agree that disc one, "On the Beach", is much more of a mellow trance; and of course, the name of the disc implies this. Most of the tracks are excellent--I just have to be in a certain mood to enjoy this time of trance.

I absolutely loved the second disc, "In the Club". The tracks are out of this world! I was listening to it during my boring commute and was loving it. Track 12 flipped on, and all of a sudden, the whole album just seemed a hundred times better to me. Tracks 12 through 16 make up my personal favorite trance mix I've ever been exposed to out of all of my favorite DJ's--Tiesto, Buuren, PVD, and Micro. This made me feel 100% secure in giving the entire album five stars!

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the previous state's of trance.......2007-07-22

The '05 and '06's were much better than this record, which is pretty good, but not nearly as good as his previous work in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Just buy it now!.......2007-07-20

I have been an ardent Armin fan for years. ASOT 2007....brilliant work. I saw Armin live a few weeks before I got this. The track "firefly" will always take me back to his performance. The crowd was chanting ARMIN ARMIN ARMIN as he had a huge beaming smile on his face. And I got his autograph. So I am in love with him for sure!

On a serious note, I have listened to this set a zillion times. You will want to also if you buy this. Love it.

5 out of 5 stars Armin at his best!!.......2007-07-20

I feel compelled to add this paragraph to my original review, for we have a troll (who obviously hates Armin Van Buuren) going through these reviews and saying that they are not helpful. You will notice that 8 negative votes were given to many of the reviews. Do not for one minute pay any attention to those negative votes (I believe one person is casting these votes), for "A State of Trance 2007" is everything the positive reviewers are saying it is.

I wholeheartedly agree with the majority of my fellow-reviewers who stated that this is Armin's best release yet. "A State of Trance 2006" was also very good, but Armin outdid himself this time.

I won't repeat the comments of former reviews, but I would add that I was surprised that no one referred (when pointing out their favorite tracks) to the amazing club hit "I Am" by Markus Schulz vs. Chakaa. I found it to be absolutely phenomenal and IMHO that track, not "Evergreen," marks the transition between the first and second half of CD2.

There was one track on CD1 that I didn't care for ("Wouldn't Change a Thing"); the vocals just didn't appeal to me. And on CD2 I considered tracks 6 & 7 ("Perspective" & "The Space We Are") to be fillers. Am I complaining? Far from it, for the other 25 tracks were sweet to the ear and will bring any trance fan (especially those who love vocal, melodic, and high energy trance) to a state of audio nirvana.

I believe this is, by far, the best 2 CD set released this year. But I have ordered the much-anticipated "Nightmusic, Vol. 2" by Thrillseekers, and if that release equals or surpasses Nightmusic, Vol. 1, it will give Armin some tough competition.

New Age diva Enya first became widely known when her 1988 album Watermark sold 4 million copies and launched the single "Orinoco Flow." Her follow-up, Shepherd Moons, was even more successful, selling over 10 million copies despite its slightly lower grade of ethereal enchantment. In 1997 she released Paint the Sky with Stars, an assortment of her best work from these two early albums plus gems from 1995's The Memory of Trees and the soundtrack to the BBC series The Celts. The most melodic and atmospheric examples of Enya's lovely Celtic-flavored songwriting shine on this disc. Those unfamiliar with the former Clannad member will find charm in such sweet lullabies as "Marble Halls" and "China Roses" while delighting in the more energetic "Book of Days," "Storms in Africa," and "Caribbean Blue." Overall, an outstanding collection from an artist who gives New Age a good name. --Karen Karleski

4 out of 5 stars Mood Music, some good, some bad.......2007-06-27

Enya's music is spacey with airy singing. Much of it is genuinely moving and touches emotions, but other tunes make the listener almost want to die. Definitely mood music. Good songs:

Orinoco Flow
Carribean Blue - very ethereal
Book of Days
Celts
Anywhere Is
Only If
The Celts

Paint the Sky with Stars - not a good song. I mention it as illustrative of my above comment. This is a real downer. Don't listen to it if you are struggling with suicidal thoughts in your life. I'm not just making a bad joke with this comment; it is truly mournful.

Overall the first half is more enjoyable. Album could have 5 stars if it had maintained that pace, but the 2nd half is much more depressing rather than emotive

Tiësto sticks to his guns on a new album of original compositions that follows 2004's Just Be. Elements of Life strikes a satisfying balance between inventive vocal tracks and signature trance stormers: "Ten Seconds Before Sunrise," "Driving to Heaven," and "Bright Morning Star" all glow with the Dutchman's epic sound, one that is simultaneously haunting and uplifting. On the vocal side, the soaring energy of "Break My Fall," which features BT on vocals, will not disappoint fans of the duo's prior work on "Just Be" and other collaborations. To be sure, there are a number of less convincing pieces as well: "Dance4Life" with Faithless's Maxi Jazz falls flat, and the lyrics of "Can You Feel Me" prove that the genre's reputation for banal wordsmithing is not entirely undeserved. For the most part, however, these weaker moments are outweighed by the stronger tracks. Principal among these is undoubtedly "Sweet Things"--in which Charlotte Martin's vocal high-wire act is complemented by some exceptional programming--a track that is sure to receive a great many spins by DJs around the globe and yet further proof that when it comes to bringing alive the female voice for the dancefloor, Tiësto remains without equal. All in all, it's a safe bet that many of Tiësto's Elements will be making their way into DJ crates and MP3 players alike. --Brent Kallmer

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Creation from Tiesto.......2007-08-03

I am Tiesto fan and dying to be able to see him live in concert. I own a lot of Tiesto music, ISOS series, Magik, Just Be, Parade of Athletes, and his DVDs. I was so happy when I saw Elements of life CD at the music store where I live..cos it is quite difficult to get Tiesto CDs where I live. I got most of my Tiesto's online or from friends who went to Europe.

What can I say about this CD...it grows on you. It's not like In Search of Sunrise PANAMA or Live in Amsterdam (which are still in my CD changer in my car for the last 3 years)

I like all the songs in the Album, but the one that stuck in my head is Break My Fall...have to fight the urge to dance whenever I listened to it. (since i listen to it everywhere, office, driving, ipod...) I really like the intro...kinda tease you to get to the song..then BT's voice came....sooooo nice.

I still love Tiesto..his music is Magic. I always happy when I listen to his music...drug free...nice eh??

Keep dancing everyone!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is what I call Trance! .......2007-07-29

Dont listen to the bad reviews, theyre not right. Elements of Life is a wonderful record, full of energy, high beats, electro sounds and very beautiful vocals. The singles DANCE4LIFE, IN THE DARK & BREAK MY FALL are amazing. The remixes to those singles are incredible as well. the vocals on BREAK MY FALL are BTs, same guy who sang on LOVE COMES AGAIN. The vocal tracks SWEET THINGS & EVERYTHING are great tracks as well. TEN SECONDS BEFORE SUNRISE is a great starter to the the album and CARPE NOCTUM is TRAFFIC part 2. ELEMENTS OF LIFE is a great track to finish off the album as well. When I first downloaded this album I thought it wasnt as good as past Tiesto records but when I decided to give it a chance and actually started to listen to the whole album I loved it and ran to my local record store and bought it right away. Now its part of my work out, its always on my ipod and always in my car. Totally love it, go for it and enjoy! Cant wait to see Tiesto live with his Elements of Life tour!

TIESTO, THE IDIOT, THE FOOL, THE ONE WHO POISONS THE NAME OF TRANCE. I FEEL SORRY FOR HIM FOR SUCKING SO MUCH. WHY CAN'T HE JUST DIE IN AN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT OR GET CANCER- THAT WAY ATLEAST WE WOULD NOT HEAR FROM HIM AGAIN. HE SHOULD BE ARRESTED FOR GIVING TRANCE AN UNDESERVED REPUTATION. if you want some fine music buy asot 2006, DEEP TRANCE by water music records or george acosta "lost world" their are many more but there are three good cd's right there.

I am kinda disappointed in this cd I like the old tiesto way better than this stuff. Hopefully his next cd rocks.

5 out of 5 stars Tiësto is Tiësto.......2007-07-11

After Just Be, I didn't have too high expectations of this album, even though I did like Just Be. This album doesn't have slow tracks, the vocal performances are just great. All songs fit his style and a couple of them may remind you his first hits.

As each new Enya release has washed over all who have ears to hear, as each heaven-touched work leaves admirers sitting speechless in slack-jawed wonder, questions eventually come to mind: Might her layered, choral-like approach gradually become predictable or stale? Will she ever exhaust her deep reservoir of soul-stirring ideas? Remarkably, A Day Without Rain, Enya's fourth release since her 1988 breakthrough, Watermark, establishes new artistic heights for the gifted Irish vocalist and keyboardist. The project, polished and refined over a five-year period in the company of longtime collaborators Nicky Ryan (producer) and Roma Ryan (lyricist), may qualify as her best yet--a radiant, beatific collection of works that command attention with their cathedral-like resonance as they soothe your spirit with some of Enya's loveliest, most graceful voicings ever. The disc's opening three tracks (including the spellbinding "Only Time") form a gorgeous trilogy that suggest Enya has deepened her focus on the nexus where sophisticated pop and regal mysticism, the twin rivers of her singular sound, form a seamless intersection. The disc's gentle timbre is disturbed only once, and in memorable fashion, with "Tempus Vernum," a marshalling of mythic sonic forces that brings to mind the theme from the De Beers diamond commercial, but with a Celtic/Goth edge. Additional highlights abound. The closing "Lazy Days" will leave your soul dancing in a shower of flower petals and sunshine. A wonderful recording. --Terry Wood

A Day Without Rain truly highlight's Enya's voice as an instrument. "Rain" delivers a focus on the sound of the music and not just on the lyrics.

3 out of 5 stars Classic Enya, But So What?.......2007-06-24

Now don't get me wrong -- I am an Enya fan. And as such I was looking forward to the release of the CD.

I probably listen to it the least of any of her CD's that I own (for the record, I have "Shepherd Moons," "Watermark," "The Memory of Trees," "The Celts," "Paint the Sky with Stars," and "Amarantine").

Why? Because with each previous (and subsequent) Enya release, there has been something that goes beyond the ethereal tones that we expect from her. And I just don't hear it here.

I do have my favourites on the CD just like anyone else ("Flora's Secret" and "Lazy Days"), but I wouldn't say that they stand out in any significant way from tracks on other CD's. If you have to choose one disc among Enya's later works, pick up Amarantine first, then grab this one later if you want a complete tome.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite Enya CD.......2007-02-11

love all the selections, some are upbeat & cheery others more melancholy.

I have had this cd for about 4 years and it still has the same effect......RELAXATION. It makes me feel very calm and centered.
I have 4 cd's from Enya and this one is the one I listen to because I love Only time, A day without rain. Those are my favorites!
If you are a fan of hers this one is a must!

5 out of 5 stars A very special one........2007-01-09

Enya's 1988 recording Watermark achieved landmark success with her groundbreaking use of multi-tracking technology to fuse new age and Celtic themes and instrumentation. The meticulous production defines her sound and achieves continuity even while weaving together tender ballads, piano pieces, massively layered vocal harmonies, and symphonic synthesizer movements. Although Enya's pristine voice isn't especially strong, her lead vocals possess a vulnerability that reflects the lyrics' sense of personal searching. From the ubiquitous, frothy single "Orinoco Flow" (which was used to hawk Crystal Light on TV) to the hard, bold edge of "Cursum Perficio," Enya's style remains fresh and engaging today. --Richard Price

5 out of 5 stars ...TIMELESS LOVELY MUSIC...........2007-07-16

She has never done better! This was the first I knew of Enya! I heard it playing when it first came out in my local music shop at the time, and asked the clerk what that was that was playing, and immediately bought a copy of this lovely album.

With all the wonderful stuff Enya has done since this, (and I have it all), I do not believe she has ever done better than this simply georgeous, lush, listening experience.....truly music to "take you away!"

MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ~operabruin

5 out of 5 stars Enya Watermark.......2007-06-03

I have always enjoyed Enya's works and own most of her CD's. I seem to have missed Watermarks until recently. Now I am thrilled, this is the best of all. It's from 1989 but if you enjoy Enya buy this CD you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Repetitive rhythms that take you away.......2007-02-01

New Age music is hard to define for those who have not heard it. But if you had to name landmark albums in the growth of New Age music, this would probably be one of them. Released in the late 80's, this is probably one of the most popular New Age albums, especially by a female artist. The musical pieces are a collection of both instrumental pieces and songs, all of which remind one of nature scenes. Many of the pieces sound similar, and listening to this CD will give you a good feel of Enya's vocal range and talent. But all the pieces are good, and some are downright great; especially the famous Orinoco Flow. Overall, a good buy for relaxing music.

2 out of 5 stars BORING.......2007-01-16

A great disappointment. I was expecting a better product from this artiste. There is so much much non-directional filler instrumentation that I feel like I bought a CD that was an Enya / New Age elevator music collaboration. You would be better off picking up something by her sister Maire (comparable voice, more creative presentations).

5 out of 5 stars Watermark by Enya.......2007-01-14

I guess I have most of her CD's. Nice for gifts too.

From the first blanket of choral voices awash in reverb, Amarantine is instantly recognizable as a product of Enya, the Irish chanteuse who has created a genre unto herself. Although it's been five years since her last CD, on Amarantine it's as if time stood still. The triumvirate of Enya, lyricist Roma Ryan, and producer Nicky Ryan work the formula they perfected on Watermark, layering her voice in lush choirs pushed along by pizzicato synth strings, swooning orchestral pads, and harpsichord arpeggios. On tracks like "Less Than a Pearl" and "Drifting," Enya flirts with a timeless sound born in gothic chants and hymns. The former is one of three songs that she sings in Roma Ryan's fictitious language of Loxian. It seems to free her, especially on "The River Sings," a veritable rave-up where she gets the tribal choir going in the style of Scottish mouth music. But to get there you have to slog through slo-mo ballads that manage to be dirge-like and singsong at the same time, like the Carpenters on Quaaludes. The relatively restrained arrangement of "It's in the Rain" almost attains a folk-like simplicity that Enya hasn't experienced since she sang with her siblings in Clannad a quarter-century ago. Amarantine sounds like it was born in cloistered solitude, self-referentially echoing Enya albums past. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Another Zone.......2007-07-07

I discovered the joys of Enya through my hairdresser! We were alone in the shop one night and suddenly she ran for a CD and put on this absolutely dreamy music (it happened to be Watermark, one of Enya's first albums). I was transported! It was haunting and evoked my strongest emotions--what artist had this power? She was aghast I had never heard of Enya since I'm in my mid-fifties. She said, oh, Enya has been around forever--don't you love her? YES. Her voice summons up Celtic forests and old mysteries best left unexplored, and of course, lost loves and massive emotional pain. But it's also strangely heartening. If you want to be moved to "another place," then put Amarantine in your player and prepare to be whisked off to another land full of fairies and mist. Enya has certainly trumped herself with this stunning CD.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as previous albums.......2007-06-27

I have all Enya's albums but this one is simply not as good as any of her previous ones.

5 out of 5 stars Another beautiful release.......2007-06-07

It's a dilemna that must face many an artist: do you repeat what you've done before because it's safe and it's what the fans want or do you do new things everytime but alienating certain people who prefer it when you did a certain sound. In the case of new age artist Enya, she doesn't really do anything new on this record or any of them. There's still her ethereal voice, lush musical arrangements and big choirs but that's what we love about her so why change it? While there's some less-than-amazing tracks, it's still a very solid record.

Less Than a Pearl: Probably one of the best album openers she's done, possibly since the Memory of Trees. Verses are nice and subdued but then probably the most gorgeous chorus she's done hits and it becomes a stellar Enya track. Highly recommended. 10/10

Amarantine: Not a lot of people are big fans of this one and I can see why. It's not that it's a bad track it just doesn't really have that hook that instantly pulls you in. Of course her vocals are spot-on and the chorus is slightly catchy, it's just not one of the better ones here. 7/10

It's in the Rain: Originally I didn't like this one but the chorus struck me and I started humming it, especially the backing vocals that answer the last word in the line, so I got into it more. It's one of the more lovelier songs on here. 8/10

If I Could Be Where You Are: What sells the song completely is Enya's vocals. The music is wonderfully understated, not overpowering her with choir sounds like she usually does. While it's maybe a bit more slower and not as attention grabbing, it's anchored by a great vocal. 8/10

The River Sings: Very upbeat, very lively despite the fact you don't know what she's singing (several of the songs were done in lyricist Roma Ryan's made-up language of Loxian. A great chorus that slows down the beat a tad; this should've been a single. 9.5/10

Long Long Journey: Another album highlight, largely built around Enya's vocal melodies and the chorus with a kind of marching band drums coming in to liven things up. Best part of the song for me personally is a captivating bridge melody. 9.5/10

Sumiregusa: Originally I didn't like the song but there's this one section where her vocals almost turn cathedral sounding and I ended up liking it again. May not be a song you get into right away but give it time and eventually it'll grow on you. 8.5/10

Someone Said Goodbye: Even though there's a hook with the song, I'm not that big a fan of it. For some reason I couldn't get the chorus "adios, goodbye" from a Day Without Rain song out of my head when I hear this one. It's a nicely composed track but it may not be a favorite for all. 8/10

A Moment Lost: The further along the record goes, the more slower the songs seem to get and there isn't that more upbeat song to liven things up. As always, it's a very nice sounding song and none of these are skip-worthy but if you tend to look for specific songs to listen to, some might pass this one. 7.5/10

Drifting: I love the use of the piano on this one. Very minimalist in its arpeggios and chording but fits perfectly with this instrumental. It's very soothing to have on and like a lot of instrumentals, it's not meant to be a big pop number a la River Sings but it's still serene nonetheless. 8.5/10

Amid the Falling Snow: Nice bouncy melody to accompany Enya's multi-tracked vocals. These help the track later with tons of ethereal vocals going on at once. Even though it's buried at the end of the album, it helps bring the cd's pace up. 8.5/10

Water Shows the Hidden Heart: The third, after River and Pearl, to be sung in Roma's Loxian language, it's a more quieter album closer and it's nice to hear her vocals almost cross each other near the end. It's a bit slower and probably won't go in your iPod anytime soon but it's a lovely closer. 8/10

It's always hard to review an Enya cd. When you use too many adjectives for "lovely", it might sound kind of biased. It's then you start seeing the songs as a whole rather than just finding everything pretty. While a couple of okay songs drag it down a tad, it's still a worthwhile cd for fans.

5 out of 5 stars She's done it again..........2007-05-20

...made an album that I can listen to over and over and over. Simply beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars One of Enya's Best.......2007-05-18

All of the folks who left negative reviews must not have heard the same album I listened to. Amarantine is quite possible my favorite Enya album, though The Memory of Trees is another strong candidate. For me, Enya is a guilty pleasure. I primarily enjoy progressive rock and roll and jazz-fusion, but Enya's music offers just enough for me to escape from time to time.

The song writing in Amarantine feels much tighter than in A Day Without Rain. I have two favorite tracks on this album: "It's In The Rain" and "The River Sings." The former is reminiscent to me of some of her work from the Watermark album, while the latter provides an excellent rhythm that evokes mental scenes of Celtic dancers.

I highly enjoy this album and I listen to it fairly often. If you enjoy all of Enya's music (as I do), you will enjoy this album.

Sixth in a series of never-quite-the-same recordings from Michael Cretu, the Bucharest-born electronic musician/studio wiz known as Enigma, A Posteriori has the capacity to delight one camp of Enigma devotees while it perplexes another. Less overtly sensual than earlier recordings and devoid of female singers in lead-vocalist roles (no Ruth-Ann, no Sandra), A Posteriori nevertheless stands as a worthwhile recording that at its best moments handsomely displays Cretu's talents for effective songcraft and imaginative sound design. The 54-minute disc--an ode to science and discovery rather than brainy erotica--launches with two impressive instrumentals, "Eppur Si Muove" ("and yet it does move," a phrase attributed to Galileo following his heresy conviction for asserting that the earth rotates around the sun) and "Feel Me Heaven," gorgeous tracks that are part audio space probes, part pulsing Euro electronica. Momentum wanes (or chills) until Cretu strings together a series of tracks that use a heady amalgam of ambient, techno, dance, and rock textures: "Hello and Welcome," "20,000 Miles Over the Sea," "Sitting on the Moon," and the dense, edgy "The Alchemist," which evokes notions of a 21st-century version of Ultravox. "Moon" stands out in particular, guided by a subtle pop melody that exudes the gentle irresistibility of Dido's best work. Cretu wisely limits (or eliminates) the use of Gregorian chants and ethnic voices, once-fresh ideas now demoted to gimmickry. He lets his own voice, a raspy take on Peter Gabriel, carry this disc's three vocal-driven tracks to mixed effect. While not everything glitters here, enough does that A Posteriori warrants investigation by earnestly inquisitive Enigma followers. --Terry Wood

There are no black holes in Enigma's musical universe. Nothing ever just vanishes here. It's been 16 years since October 1st 1990, when Enigma's debut, "Sadeness Part 1," rocked the earthly airwaves and hit the top of the charts with sounds the planet had never heard. All of a sudden Enigma was no longer a UFO but the most famous spaceship of world music - and the music world. On September 22nd, 2006 A Posteriori, the sixth album of Michael Cretu's Enigma project was released.

You can get an idea of where A Posteriori is heading from song titles such as "Dreaming Of Andromeda," "Message From Io" and "Goodbye Milky Way." It takes you on a voyage through a multilayered soundscape, to the limits of your sonic experience, but always stays true to the essence of Enigma. The album will carry any hitch-hiker along to explore extraordinary new galaxies aboard the sound-ship Enigma. There is also the overture that, as on the five predecessors, welcomes the listener to Enigma's latest album, before creating the first tonal Fata Morgana 30 seconds later. Wafting through a soft carpet of sound come mysterious voices suggestive of power, shouting something Latin into this new sound-sphere—a sphere where A Posteriori will linger. Enigma once again create associative sound-signals that embed themselves in your head forever like a mental tattoo.

I have ALL of Enigma's CD's (respectfully) and am totally in love with this composer and his music! Well, it's either Enigma music or more Clonazepam ::shrug::

3 out of 5 stars Masterpiece, or IMAX film score?.......2007-08-03

You can read the other reviewer's comments to formulate your own opinion of this album. I'll just say that, at its worst, A Posteriori suffers from what I call the "IMAX soundtrack" syndrome. Okay, maybe "worst" is too harsh; you could play this in the background, and enjoy most of what you hear. But, this isn't the same rush you get with the earlier albums.

There are three incredible tracks that I consider among Enigma's very best: 20,000 Miles Over The Sea, Dancing With Mephisto, and Goodbye Milky Way. The first is just beautiful beyond words. The second is the Enigma We Know and Love, full of pulsating beats, eroticism, and danger. And the third is meditation on how greater forces are shaping the universe, and how utterly insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things.

5 out of 5 stars I like it.......2007-07-17

Well we are now in a new "age" for Enigma. The sounds are new and maybe the fans can't adapt easily.

Anyway i think this CD is beautiful, i like it a lot.

Enigma has a great pro: Takes its escence of its music, while blends it with fresh beats and sounds. This work shows great traces of soft and aggresive electronica blended with an "outer space" atmosphere. When I listened to the CD, I felt taken to somewhere next to the moon, looking at the stars and the Earth in front (possibly most of the track titles would push me into that thought). Enigma evolved for the good through time, and this is the product. Song like "Good bye Milky Way", "Dreaming of Andromeda" and "Northen Lights" would relax yourself and feel great emotions; while "Dancing with Mephisto" and "Feel me Heaven", would give you a great blast with a little more agrresive electronica and faster beats. Something I would have prefered is a different picture for the CD cover, I think I would be great a great space picture of a nebula, the Pleyades, a supernova or something; but anyways, after listening to this, that will be the last thing you might be thinking about. Great job Michael!

3 out of 5 stars Nice to chill out with.......2007-07-05

I am an Enigma-holic who owns all the albums and love them all. As a musician myself I'm always searching for the ultimate unique musical experience and "A Posteriori" is awesome. As a whole the ambient spacey grooves here tend to be more similar from track to track and never change much dynamically or tempo wise - they tend to put the listener into a hypnotic trance and that is a good thing when you want that type of feeling.
