Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

4 out of 5 stars My Budgie Maude & I love this cd!.......2007-04-20

I purchased this cd for my budgie to hear & learn different bird sounds during the day while I am @ work....Maude just goes wild when I walk over to turn it on.....she will sit on top of the cd player & bob her head.
It will be cool when she starts repeating the different birds
I had no trouble with the track not lineing up but the 3 bonus tracks didnt have a name only unavailable....but Maude can't read so she dont mind

4 out of 5 stars Great sound; Wrong Indexing.......2006-09-20

I give it 4 stars because it isn't too mixed up with the indexing and the most important part is the excellent sound...all for the low price! There are even 3 bonus birds at the end (but, no names!) I don't understand the person who says the indexing is not wrong. If you select a track and it isn't the bird then the indexing is wrong. Simple. Don't get it if you must have the indexing correct. And I think it is a great buy. No regrets! I'm getting more as gifts. I'll get the list straight. It will definitely help me learn the names!

5 out of 5 stars great bird sounds!!.......2006-07-18

I don't understand when people say the tracks don't line up, because they do. There are three bonus tracks at the end of the cd which are not listed on the back cover. I don't know what birds these are, but the rest of the cover lines up, except it says (1)zero tone (2)summer tanager and (2) is one, because 1 is considered two also. The bird sounds themselves are amazing and clear and if you like bird sounds this is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Bird Sounds.......2006-02-20

This is the most authentic CD of various bird sounds that I have ever heard. My two paraketts listen very intently to the sounds and then go on and make their own chirps too.

3 out of 5 stars Titles don't match tracks.......2005-02-14

Apparently 3 more tracks were inserted without updating the track index. I realized this when I played the whip-por-will track and heard a hermit thrush instead. Don't use this CD for field identification unless you can figure out what the 3 extra tracks are and where they were inserted so you can rewrite the track listing accordingly. Otherwise, the recordings are crisp and clear.

5 out of 5 stars dog barking cd.......2006-03-03

We ordered this cd for our boston terriers -- we want them to get used to hearing other dogs bark (so they won't bark at other dogs in the neighborhood anymore). The cd has many different sounds; great dog barking. It took a little bit to arrive but it was in really good shape.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Ocean sounds I've found.......2006-06-27

This is exactly as they say "The psycologically ultimate seashore" and it's fabulous. Recorded on the beach with all the sounds of wonderful surf and seabirds and an occasional buoy in the distance, perfect for relaxing. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars CD's? O.o.......2006-06-09

Interesting these are comming out on CD. I have all the environments albums on Vinyl. I had to painfully record
the albums onto my hard drive and do a little editing
couple pops here and there. One album was warped so bad
it wouldnt play right. These albums are from the 70's or early 80's

Best stuff out there considering the other options.

Like one reviewer said. some companies or people put way to many annoying sounds in such a beutifull CD that it ruins it. Birds/any other annoying noises.

5 out of 5 stars No music, no birds - just ocean!.......2005-08-25

I've listened to a lot of these Ocean CDs, and most of them disappoint. Often there's lame New Age music or foghorns or birds. I bought one ocean CD that had so many gull squawks, I felt like Tippi Hedron!

Thankfully, this CD has nothing but water. It's not the most relaxing ocean CD I've heard (Dan Gibson's "Ocean Surf" holds that title) but at least its ocean sounds are unadulterated. The difference between this CD and the Gibson one is that the ocean seems more turbulent on this CD. The Gibson CD is more mellow -- it seems like you're standing in the surf at low tide. When you listen to "Environments 1: Psychologically Ultimate Seashore," you feel more like you're way out at sea.

"Environments 1: Psychologically Ultimate Seashore" is for those of you who want a stronger-sounding ocean. The other benefit of this CD is that it will be the creepiest title in your CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Sonic Bliss.......2005-04-22

Congratulations if you've found this cd despite Amazon's typo. And if you think a recording of waves gently washing ashore is a joke, think again. This cd provides calm and, most especially, relaxation when used at bedtime. It seems to gently draw attention to itself and mask other, more disturbing ambient noises. I've listened to this cd most nights for more than 10 years, and it's never failed to lull me to sleep; it's even relaxing to hear when you wake (if you stick it on repeat overnight). What's most significant about this recording is that it works best when barely audible, adding a cushioning layer of white noise to your aural environment. Of course, if your environment is very noisy or you find yourself highly sensitive to extraneous or synthetic sound this may not be for you. But I love it. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the all time great albums to which to relax.......2004-08-27

This album was designed to relax you. It does a very good job. Doctors could prescribe this album to releive stress! It quiets down the room, masking the sound of life outside. Playing it causes your breathing to slow, and takes the edge off a cruel and difficult world.

Environments produced at least two "psychologically ultimate" albums including this one and the "Psychologically Ultimate Thunderstorm." I have had them ever since they first came out on vinyl in the '70s. I lost my copy of this album years ago, but managed to find the Thunderstorm album on vinyl. I then recorded it to CD and play it all night long to sleep. I know that the Ultimate Thunderstorm was not a real thunderstorm, but was white noise with some sound effects on top.

I later found a copy of this album on vinyl and recorded it to my computer, set up a 10 hour playlist which simply repeats the seashore and play it to help me relax, when I do work at home, and when I go to sleep. It is more relaxing than the Thunderstorm because it doesn't have the Thunderstorm's sometimes intrusive rumbling thunder. Accordingly, it gets played more than the Thunderstorm.

It is interesting to see the reviews below state that the Psychologically Ultimate Seashore was recorded at night because there are no gull noises. It is my recollection that it was not actually a recording or the seashore, but a simulation designed to be relaxing -- just like the Ultimate Thunderstorm. This is the reason it is self described as "Psychologically Ultimate." It sounds so good. The comments show how good a simulation it is! I've purchased actual recordings of the ocean and thunderstorms and they are not as relaxing.

The reason the album works is because it contains white noise. White noise is a sound that contains every frequencywithin the range of human hearing in equal amounts. This is the static type of sound you get when the radio dial isn't tuned to a station. Pink noise is a variant of white noise, except the tonal balance is different. This is the sound moving water makes. When used properly, as it is here, low level pink noise it is very relaxing. Because this album contains all frequencies, it masks the noise intruding from the outside world. Synthetic Silence.

They managed to use technology to record love and peace! It sounds better than the real thing!

5 out of 5 stars Calms baby.......2007-05-22

We love this CD!!!

Sometimes this is the only sound that can calm our baby. When we turn it on it makes us think of Hawaii and puts our baby's mind at ease.

5 out of 5 stars Memories.......2007-01-05

Loved it; reminds me of the sounds I was able to fall asleep to in my youth in Hawaii.

5 out of 5 stars Sure cure for insomnia.......2006-10-08

Found this at a local library around 20 years ago, bought a copy and after quite literally about 10,000 rotations it is finally making some clicking noises towards the end and waking me up. I didn't think you could wear-out a cd there being no surface contact with the lasar and all, but the noise is there nonetheless so I guess you can. I'm sure I could probably sleep without this thing but at this point it is so ingrained into my subconsious that it is like audible crack. The delicate decrecendo of the rain over an hour-long period, balanced by the soft chirpings of birds and crickets will lull you into oblivion.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended For Sleeping.......2006-09-18

I love this CD. My wife and I have kept it playing on repeat, every night, for the past 4 years. If you like rain, I definitely recommend it.

I spent a long time looking for a CD that was pure rain. Most have thunderclaps, and some even have frogs and honking geese. The closest that I found, a CD that actually featured a rainstorm without any animal noises, sounded tinny and unnatural. It was like listening to radio static. It wasn't relaxing. It was annoying.

This Hawaii rain shower was a good compromise. It does have mild cricket noises and some bird chirps toward the end -- but they're subtle, and I think they help to trick my mind into thinking that I'm hearing rain rather than static coming from the speakers. I would also admit that this CD isn't optimal for repeat playing, because over the course of an hour the rain slows and ends softer than it began; but we've been using it happily for 4 years, and it's never kept me awake.

I suppose I could have kept searching for the Holy Grail of pure rain CDs -- but as they say, "perfect is the enemy of good." I'd probably still be searching instead of enjoying this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Rain with crickets and birds.......2006-07-03

As one reviewer said this rain CD has the sounds of crickets and birds towards the end. If you are looking for only the soothing sound of rain with no birds, crickets, thunder or other annoying things, I recommend "Sounds of the Earth: Rain in the Country". The "Rain in the Country" CD is a clear recording of a steady rainshower. It is so relaxing that I bought 3 copies of it just in case they ever stop selling it.

Enjoyed this one too. I need calm sounds to fall asleep and this one works for me.

5 out of 5 stars IN MY OPINION, THE BEST ENVIRONMENT / NATURE CD EVER.......2004-02-11

I currently have a collection of a number of environment / nature cds. I personally prefer them without added music, and without subliminal information, just pure nature sounds. WATERFALL: A WEEK IN HAWAII is, without a doubt, my very favorite environment / nature CD. The recording of this particular waterfall in Hawaii is very soothing and relaxing. Dr. Toby Mountain did a superb job. When I am at the library, or anywhere for that matter, I carry a cd player with headphones in my briefcase or backpack, along with my WATERFALL CD. This combination makes the perfect sound machine. I am able to read with talking going on in the background. When I'm writing on the computer, I listen to this cd, just as I am doing right now. I never seem to tire of it.

If you have difficulty relaxing or sleeping, this album may very well help. If you're looking for the ultimate in aural relaxation, I believe that WATERFALL: A WEEK IN HAWAII is an excellent choice. I hope that the producer of this album never stops making it. Without reservation, I rate this work a perfect 5 stars.

Also Recommended: RAIN IN THE COUNTRY, THE PSYCHOLOGICALLY ULTIMATE SEASHORE, SOUNDS OF THUNDER BY THE SEA, and RELAXING WITH NATURE: OCEAN SURF/SAILING.

3 out of 5 stars Running water.......2001-11-15

I love the sound of running water, espcially that of a thunderstorm or the ocean surf. "Waterful, a Week in Hawaii," seemed to fit that bill, but I find it to be a little on the monotonous side. Although the sound quality is not bad, at a volume loud enough to distinguish it from a "TV on a blank channel," (according to my husband,) it is very intrusive. It's difficult to just lay back and relax with a book or day dream. In fact I find I'm usually planning my next trip to the bathroom, rather than my next vacation to Waikiki.

5 out of 5 stars Relaxation at it's best!.......2001-08-10

I bought this CD for my husband a couple of years ago. It was so relaxing, we would fall asleep to it. Now we're expecting our first baby in October and I definately plan on playing it, not only for the baby but for me as well!

5 out of 5 stars All natural........2001-07-11

This recording is the one to sleep by. Brahms and Beethoven are hard to beat, but this waterfall recording taped by Dr. Toby Mountain is my most often played CD. I used to live by a busy corner with lots of traffic noise. This CD helped drown out the dissonance of the city. Now I live with two babies, and the waterfall's lullaby is still washing away the stress. Unlike many environmental CDs, this one has no obnoxious editing or mixing, and no schmaltzy musaque added. The sounds are like the ones you would really hear if you were camping in the forest.

3 out of 5 stars A good CD, but..........2007-02-14

You know that Simpsons episode where Homer tries to soothe Marge by making ocean sounds? He first shooshes some waves, then he imitates the sound of a buoy, then he wakes her up with a horrible bird screeching, and then he tops it off with a pirate's "Arrrr, Matey." This CD is sort of like that, without the buoy and the pirates.

5 out of 5 stars Best Waves CD Ever!.......2005-12-10

I have thousands and thousands of CDs. I listen to this CD more than any other CD in my collection. I disagree with the other reviewers regarding the bird. I have about 20 different CDs of ocean waves...many are marred by loud birds or other distractions. I have listened to this CD every day for years and years and have never noticed a bird. This CD is ideal for sleeping. It is really like my security blanket. Whenever I have to go to sleep without it, I wish I had it. Believe me, I have tried the rest, this CD is the best!

2 out of 5 stars GREAT SURF AND A BIRDIE TANTRUM.......2002-07-24

A great recording of surf, one of the best, but there is a bird. This bird doesn't fly away, he stays about the same distance from the microphone the entire time. About 30 minutes into the recording he began to have a birdie tantrum, something upset him, but he stayed and stayed. I gave it a 2 star for surf. If they can edit out the bird and just let us have the wonderful surf then it would be worth the money, but as it is skip it, it is not for sleeping.

2 out of 5 stars A Misleading Title.......2001-03-28

The title of the cd is "Tropical Surf" but what I didn't know until I listened to it was that the entire one hour recording consists of waves and chirping birds. If you love songbirds, then this cd is for you. If you just want a relaxing cd with beautiful ocean waves, I would not recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth Sleeping.......2000-07-13

I used to loop this CD to sleep all day when I worked nightshifts. (lost or loaned somewhere) Now I'm ordering another to help me focus on programming projects.

The Best!

I loveloveloveloveloveloveLOVE this album/song. I first heard it on NatureSong Radio, and knew I had to get the CD. I use it for meditation and ritual use, since the aren't any loud noises that startle you, unlike some of Gentle Persuasion's other work. The sounds are beautiful and very relaxing. It feels like you're getting a massage that starts in your neck and slowly moves down to your ankles. It clears your mind and makes you feel fresh, new, whole and alive. There's no music in it, just the sounds of nature. Pure nature.
