Music from Within

About the Artist
Allison Zopel was born and raised in Northern Wisconsin to a deeply musical family. Along with her three siblings, she became fluent in an impressive range of instruments, soon growing an evolving love for the piano. By the age of 17, Allison had begun composing her first original pieces on the piano. At the age of 20, Allison was involved in a serious car accident, which resulted in severe brain injuries and soon after, a coma. It was during the next four years she spent coming out of a coma that 12 of the 14 songs on "Music from Within" were composed. "The music that comes through me is an expression of my soul," says Allison."And the simplicity of the music, I hope and feel will give people that time and space that we all need in order to slow down, and let what's inside of us truly emerge." Allison has been inspired by many great musicians through her life-time, some of those who inspired the music on this album are: George Winston, Jim Brickman, David Lanz, and Sarah McLachlan.

Music from Within,Allison Zopel,Allison Zopel,Healing, heartfelt solo piano that came through Allison while spending four years coming out of a coma.. this is music sure to nourish your body, mind, and soul.

Album Description

Experience the perfect peace within and without. This exquisite music is soothing, uplifting and will illuminate your heart with joy. The final recording from legendary vocalist Singh Kaur (Fairy Nightsongs, The Crimson Series) -- This Universe is an enchanting message of love that radiates grace and serenity. The purity of Singh Kaur's ethereal voice shines through on the extended ancient chant "This Universe," a gorgeous and enchanting original version of "A Spark in the Night," and a breathtaking musical version of "The Lord's Prayer." The deeply touching beauty of Singh Kaur's voice is a rare gift and she recorded this extraordinary music as her final offering to her fans. Produced by Gary Stadler (Fairy NightSongs, Fairy Heart Magic) and featuring artfully sensitive keyboard orchestrations by Raphael (Music to Disappear Into) and special guest Lisa Lynne on Celtic harp, "This Universe" will deepen and enhance your yoga, the healing arts or meditation.

5 out of 5 stars Enchantment.......2007-04-03

This music is so exquisite it brings tears of joy to my eyes. I have never been so moved. Wonderful for meditation or just relaxed enjoyment. A singer with perfect pitch and an enormously talented composer. This beautiful music will take you into presence.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2007-03-10

Singh Kaur's heavenly music is the perfect antitdote to a busy and stress-filled day. I easily come back home, to my most shining self, when I listen to her other-worldly CD.

5 out of 5 stars Equisite and Filled Eternal Bliss.......2005-10-12

Just exquisite! I love Singh Kaur from her Crimson Series releases and absolutely adored her previous collaboration with Gary Stadler on "Fairy NightSongs". But this new release fills me with such joy and wonder and opens my heart in a way that I have never experienced from music before. Singh Kaur's voice is radiant and pierces my soul with it's devotional passion and tenderness. I feel blessed to have found this magnificent piece of music. Thank you, thank you, thank you Gary Stadler for bringing Singh Kaur's final musical gift to us all. Many Blessings.

5 out of 5 stars All Pain And Sorrow Depart.......2005-09-14

As I've mentioned elsewhere I have a deep, visceral reaction when I hear Singh Kaur's voice. Suddenly I stop for a moment, as the wise say, my mind opens, and I remember that the problem isn't me, the problem is my reaction to the problem. This dates back to my first discovery of her series of chants done on the independent ?Invincible label with Kim Robertson on harp. This Crimson collection, her final recording, is the closest thing to healing music that I have ever heard. Unfortunately, the set has to be sought out or ordered, and many people simply have never heard what is one of the most powerful voices in new age music.

I don't know if I can put my finger on what exactly is it about her singing that does this. The Spark in the Night, the first cut on this album is a reworking of an old melody of hers. The simplicity of her voice, the purity of her tone fits right into the music. As her singing matured, her voice gained coloration, and this song works not simply as and easy melody, but it reaches the listener emotionally as well.

Most of the album (43 minutes) is spent on the title piece, this universe. Combining wit Gary Stadler, Lisa Lynne, and several others, it is meditation music perfection. While anything of this length is going to be repetitious, Singh Kaur manages to vary dynamics, rhythm and color so that even the repetition is soothing. This is no small accomplishment in a world where many people think that meditation music should be electronic choirs droning over electronic strings. Singh Kaur is never hackneyed.

Rather than drone on about Kaur's talents, I suggest that, if you are looking for the narrow path to inner quiet, you stop a moment and listen for yourself.

There was nothing like the Robeson sound, ever. To describe his deep, rich, perfectly equalized instrument is futile. Go instead to "Balm in Gilead," the opening track, and see if you can listen to the last pianissimo phrase without falling to pieces. Robeson was at his best when the music was slow and the words contained spiritual or social messages. Faster, lighter fare like Kern's "I Still Suits Me" or Gershwin's "It Ain't Necessarily So" find the serious-minded singer out of his element, lacking irony and swing. "Old Man River," though, gets a simple, dignified treatment. It's Songs of Free Men, though, that will just keep Robeson's artistry rolling along, especially in Sony's astonishing transfers. --Jed Distler

4 out of 5 stars Robeson on wax.......2007-06-19

I found this album in a thrift store last week, for a couple of dollars. It's the original pressing on four 78 RPM records, in a gatefold format. It's in pristine condition. I really bought it for the incredible cover art, although I hope to be able to listen to it in this format at some point.

5 out of 5 stars The voice, the sound quality and the interpretation.......2004-09-24

Put this on your stereo and if it is good enough the depth and richness of Robeson's voice will make your fillings rattle and your chest rumble. The power of his voice is awesome. This CD is superbly recorded with no audible noise at normal listening levels.

4 out of 5 stars A Voice from the 40s, often dated, often moving.......2002-09-01

"Red diaper babies" have greeted this disc with nostalgic joy, and it captures a time and an aesthetic and a political belief with precision. Anyone interested in the emotional life of the pro-Soviet left of the 1940s should buy this disc. It's something like Henry Wallace set to music. There is much more to Robeson than that, however, and Sony has given us Robeson whole: there are songs by American masters of the musical, there are labor songs, religious songs, as well as the kind of faux-folk songs which the butcher supreme Josef Stalin encouraged and which were not taken seriously inside the USSR (except at gunpoint!!) but which were taken up by dupes around the world. This is Robeson at his least savory - willing propagandist for a vile mass murderer. Songs such as "Native Land" (fittingly, Robeson is referring to the Soviet Union) and the Red Army song are the equivalent of the "Horst Wessel Song", anthems of murder, and it is difficult to listen to the worst of them without retching. On the other hand, Robeson's commitment to American folk culture was real. "Balm in Gilead" is deeply beautiful; "John Henry" is heroic; "By an' By" is both resigned yet hopeful. "Joe Hill" captures an era in labor history. Anyone interested in American popular song should hear these. Turning to Broadway, his "Old Man River" is very fine, though Robeson changed the lyrics for political reasons and Leonard Warren has done the song better. I disagree with the editorial reviewer: "I Still Suits Me" is wonderfully playful and shows Robeson using his gorgeously rich voice to tease and poke fun. However, Marc Blitzstein's "Purest Kind of a Guy" is beyond saving - another example of Robeson recording an unworthy song by a political fellow-traveller. Ugh. But for every miss there are two hits. Robeson performs Mendelssohn's Elijah with nobility, and sings his favorite song, "Water Boy", with joyous pride: "There ain't no hammer that's on these mountains that rings like mine, boys, that rings like mine."
No one need have any fears about the mono sound quality. The orchestra in the second half of the program is at times a little dwarfed by Robeson's voice, but it generally sounds clean and colorful, and the great artist's voice rings like no other.

5 out of 5 stars Robeson at his best.......2000-05-12

It's hard to believe that most of these recordings pre-date the advent of magnetic tape: the CD transfer is superlative. The songs and performance are beyond reproach. Notable is the imaginative packaging in miniature 'record album' format, complete with the original cover art, and a replica of the original Columbia record label applied to the CD.

In response to a previous question: Robeson's performance of Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) can be found on the Vanguard LP entitled "Robeson" (VRS-9037).

5 out of 5 stars some of the greatest songs of the last century.......2000-05-05

In the 1940s, before rabid McCarthyism and racism had taken its toll on him, Robeson made these wonderful recordings of spirituals, classics and pop tunes. Accompanied by the solo piano of the incomparable Lawrence Brown, or by an orchestra, the songs ring out with pride, dignity, skill and unmatched integrity. The shameful treatment that Robeson was subject to from American authorities certainly seem grotesquely absurd to a modern listener. The wonderful version of "The House I Live In" included on this cd should forever kill off any suspicion that Robeson did not love his country deeply. This album ought to be heard by millions of people, world wide. Robeson's voice is nothing less than a glorious high point in 20th century music, and it's hard to think of any recording capturing it to greater advantage.

2 out of 5 stars Crappy re-release, but SUFFOCATION f*@!ing rules.......2006-01-21

When I heard that these two amazing albums were going to be re-released, remastered and put onto one cd, I was very excited. Unfortunately, it's not worth the money. If you are a Suffocation fan, you probably already own these two albums.

The packaging of this CD is downright pathetic. The insert does not contain ANY lyrics or any additional pictures. In fact, the insert is downright worthless. As for the sound... I cant tell the difference between this CD and the original version. Seems like a money grab for the record company. I would NOT recommend picking this release up.

5 out of 5 stars 2 classic death metal albums for the price of one!.......2005-09-15

In my opinion, Suffocation are easily the best death metal band around. There are other great bands out there too, but Suffocation just seems to create music that shows they really know how to make the best technical death metal out there. Every song on here is great and the musicianship and vocals are simply amazing. The production may not have the same quality that Souls to Deny has but that doesn't mean it should lose points for that. Since both of these cds have become harder to find over the years, its nice to be able to get both of them in one convienent package. Overall, I highly recommend this if you are a Suffocation fan or are into death metal at all.

5 out of 5 stars F*CK YES!!!.......2005-02-15

Two brutal technical death metal masterworks for the price of one(both being EXTREMELY hard to get now)??? This has got to be any metalhead's wet dream. This is also the best thing Roadrunner has done within the past ten years (especially since they started sucking in the mid 90's-present), although they could of done a lot better on the layout and included the lyrics in the booklet(keep in mind, i'm reviewing the music, not the format of it). With that said 'Effigy of the forgotten' and 'Pierced from Within' are both equally brilliant technical slabs of brutal death metal and are still unmatchable in their vision and ferocity today! It's just that it all flows together so well, organic sounding in the way that none of it sounds forced and almost amorphous in the way they shift back and forth between various tempos. I must also note that Frank Mullen is probably my favorite death metal vocalist: bar none. Some personal favorites from both albums include "Infecting the crypts", "Liege of Inveracity","Thrones of blood","Suspended in Tribulation", and "Torn into Enthrallment" but hell, they're all good rip-roaring death metal fun, so either get this Roadrunner release(Still sucks that your hard earned money goes to such a now-crappy label) or find the cd's seperate offline it's well worth it!

P.S. They're AMAZING live!

I have found that Stellamara's music brings me to a very creative, focused state of mind. I alternate between dancing to the CD and just allowing my artwork to flow from my heart and head through to my hands (I work with clay) - Stellamara stimulates the artistic muse within.

3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2006-08-10

I have to admit that, as much as I love this style of music, this album is a bit weak to me. Not nearly as rich as something from Lisa Gerrard or Azam Ali. I put these guys near the bottom of my list for this style, right above Lumin. Still a good listen but there is alot of stuff out there that I would reach for first.

4 out of 5 stars Transporting and Lush.......2005-01-26

In short, this is beautiful. Moody, medieval, and Middle-Eastern. The music and voices are exotic and they transport me. I enjoy it for listening, mood creation, ambiance making, and relaxing. Yummy.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2004-06-14

A splendind combination of medieval western european chansons with present-day Balkan folk tunes. An album which is among my favourite neofolk releases, including Dead Can Dance, Vas, Axiom of Choice... I am looking forward to their upcoming release "The Seven Valleys" and searching for a limited edition of "Entrance" album.

5 out of 5 stars Not a KSE rip off people!!.......2007-01-11

To the people who think that Caliban took a look at KSE's playbook and ripped them off, you need to do your homework. Caliban RELEASED their self-titled debut in 1998. It was most likely recorded in 1997, 3 whole years before KSE released their self-titled debut. SO...those people don't now what they are talking about. The Opposite From Within is Caliban's sixth (6th) studio release, and by my count KSE only have four, do the math, it's that simple. Caliban are a very underrated band playing some brutal metalcore that only the German's know how. As far as I'm concerned they are the campions of German metalcore. Awesome, awesome CD buy it, you will not be disappointed. Another sick metalcore band (more emphasis on the METAL, then on the CORE) is Cataract. Buy all of their albums as well. Brutally heavy stuff!

3 out of 5 stars ok.........2006-08-10

don't get me wrong here.. im not one of these people saying caliban are a killswitch engage ripoff but.. ever since they sold themselves to roadrunner these german metallers have been doing something thats not really them (or wasn't really them).. theres a fine line between melody and brutality and making the two have just the right balance (killswitch's first two albums did it perfectly).. its not that any of the songs are particuarly bad its just they sound so FAKE.. its like they wrote 2 minutes of heavy stuff and some roadrunner exec. came along and said: 'we need to insert melodic bits with boyband vocals here, here and here'.. and hey presto! we have a caliban album.. and its not just caliban that are guilty because so many metalcore bands are doing it now and none of it sounds very natural (demon hunter's new album is another obvious example).. despite all of that its alright to listen to for a couple of days but im not expecting it to join the likes of tool, gojira, isis, (early) metallica, etc. on my permanant playlist.. theres just nothing particuarly deep about it for a repeated listening experience..

5 out of 5 stars Some good solid metalcore.......2006-06-21

First off and straight to the point this is a very good cd. Caliban are insane, but there is one thing that annoys me and that is f#*kheads that write music reviews about genres they dont even like. WTF!!!! the music is obviosly gonna suck if you don't like metalcore. If your into metalcore then i suggest you have a listen.

2 out of 5 stars A temporary solution for insomnia?.......2005-12-06

After reading all those positive reviews of if like Killswitch Engage, then you'll like Caliban. So I bought the album hoping to hear some similarities of music. Boy was I disappointed! I disgree to the comparison to KsE because they don't even sound remotely similar at all.

After listening to "Opposite from within", I realised that they are trying way too hard to sound metal & should stick to what they do best (not sure if they know); hard rock style nu-metalish songs. The screaming style singing sounds pretty much monotonous throughout the albums. Not sure if he (Andy Dorner)is confused of being in a metal or emo band? (very evident in his voice). I reckon that Denis Schmidt's voice is the preferred sound for this band as it is clear & a lot deeper than Andy's. Then again he's got the voice that's perfect for those hard rock style nu-metalish songs. This can be heard on track #7 "Certainly...corpses bleed cold" & not hard to understand why this song is the best song on the album. Other alright songs are track #1,4 & 5.

I'm giving it 2 stars for creating wicked darkish music. Overall if you require background music or can't get some snooze, I recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Germany's best kept metalcore secret, may leave you wondering Killswitch Engage who?.......2005-09-20

Caliban's "The Opposite From Within" is just one of those records that comes along so unexepectedly. Easily matching some of the top metalcore releases of 2004 (most notably Unearth's "The Oncoming Storm" and Killswitch Engage's "The End Of Heartache"), Caliban brings much to the table and completely annihilates a lot of the competition. Caliban doesn't do anything drastically different from the melodic metalcore style we've all grown accustomed to by now, they easily show their musicianship over younger newer bands just cropping up in the scene. Having more than 7 years of being a band under their belt, Caliban offers a record that any fan of the genre will fall in love with. But What surprises me the most is that these guys are relatively unknown, even at a time when Metalcore is at it's Zenith. I could easily see these guys getting the kind of attention Killswitch Engage or As I Lay Dying does. All I can think is that they most be alot bigger in Europe than they are here.

Ok first off, a lot of people are gonna tell you "yea they sound like a german Killswitch Engage", which is kinda true and kinda not. It's true that the two bands share a lot of similarities, most notably their nact for writing beautifully aggressive music, but I wouldn't see much more of a comparison than that. Actually to me, Caliban is much heavier than Killswitch Engage, and much more melodic at times. That may sound almost blastphamous to some (keep in mind I am also a huge KSE fan), but it's entirely true. Caliban shows throughout the entire cd, they can play some of the most blisteringly melodic metalcore around. "The Beloved And The Hatred", the opening track, shows this illustration perfectly. Seemlessly switching between tortured screams, and beautiful melodies, Caliban basically introduces you to what they are about. The clean vocals are actually done by one of the guitar players, not the main vocalist/screamer Andreas (which if anyone has seen the video for "The Beloved And The Hatred" or the band's live show, you would know). Tracks like "Goodbye" and "Senseless Fight" are a couple of my personal favorites, but honestly it's so hard to choose favorite songs on this cd, as I can't really find a bad one on here. Caliban's breakdowns are even pretty interesting, and easily fit in with the beautifully crushing music, and are sure to ensight dance floors everywhere they are played. I constantly find myself listening to this cd entirely, it's just that good. After 4 albums of perfecting their style, Caliban have reached their pinacle with this masterpiece, and I can only see the band going up from here.

If you're a fan of heavy metal or hardcore, then I highly recommend this cd to you. It was easily one of the best records of 2004, and more than a year after it's release I find myself still listening to it just as much as I did right when it came out. If you like any kind of melodic metalcore, especially Killswitch Engage and As I Lay Dying, I guarantee you'll love these guys. With Metal and Hardcore being so big right now, I wouldn't be surprised if these guys see at least some kind of success. They don't necessarily re-invent the wheel, but with "The Opposite From Within", Caliban definitely perfects it.

5 out of 5 stars Agent M is hot.......2005-06-15

This cd rocks and i had the pleasure of meeting Agent M in 2001 when Tsunami Bomb was opening up for The Living End. I also saw them play at Gilman St. in 2000 and i bought this cd after that performance. The only thing that is missing is the song "Obligation" that doesn't really fit with this album but it rocks pretty hard. They have since drastically changed their sound which is ok but this album is their best.

4 out of 5 stars gooses review.......2005-06-13

This cd was pretty good. Although I feel cds with less than 10 songs shouldn't be released I bought it anyway. The first song on this cd is what you would expect from the artwork on the cd. I would have to say the best song on the cd is "not forever" because I heard another version of lemonade that was better than the one on this cd which left me somewhat dissapointed after getting this cd. having said that "lemonade" and "marionette" are the other songs on the cd which are of really good quality. People who really like this group will say they enjoy the invasion from within and no ones looking. Because most of the songs on the cd are at the very least acceptable I can see this cd selling well.

5 out of 5 stars My girlfriend got me into this band........2004-08-11

Let me first say that music like this normally isn't my thing. I pretty much just listen to melodic death metal. Well my girlfriend had this cd and everytime we took a drive she played the album. At first I was like what is this happy jumpy music. Than after a while this album stuck on me and I couldn't believe it. Their is just something about this band that I love. Anyways, out of all the punk bands that are out right now Tsunami Bomb are in a league of their own. I love Lemonade. If my friends catch me listening to this oh oh!!! LOL

5 out of 5 stars this cd is awesomeness.......2003-11-10

this CD is unbelievably addictive. it may only have 6 songs on it, but all 6 of them are crammed with awesome music. agent m has such a beautiful voice, and it really shines on this album.. the songs are catchy, and they easily get stuck in your head, but its a good thing. my favorite songs are "no ones looking", "lemonade", and the title track. the ultimate escape is also a really good album. get em both. tsunami bomb is rockin.

5 out of 5 stars It really is the bomb.......2003-09-30

After listening to this Cd, I dont know how to describe it. Its just that good. Agent M has one of the best voices I have ever heard(male or female). Everything on this disc is great. The guitar, vocals, and over all feel of the Cd makes it one of my favorites. Although it is only a 6, I can easily listen to all of them over and over and never get tired of them. Any fan of female fronted bands or just plain great punk bands will enjoy Tsunami Bomb's "The Invasion From Within".

5 out of 5 stars Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

This film adaptation of the popular video game series attempts a technological breakthrough: computer-generated, photo-realistic renditions of human characters. But while critics and audiences gave mixed marks to game creator and film producer-director Hironobu Sakaguchi's ambitious technical efforts, it was ironically the film's most obviously human elements--its veteran actors' voice performances and, crucially, the masterful score by Elliot Goldenthal--that really brought it to life. Goldenthal's work is a sweeping orchestral masterpiece that covers vast musical territory, from the action-adventure of Korngold to the fantasy strains of Herrmann, florid Russian romanticism to touches of late-20th-century modernism. With the London Symphony in full voice and then some, Goldenthal's music is treated to a performance of rare dynamic range and dramatic power; the edgy, modern brass flourishes and thunderous percussion of "Toccata and Dreamscapes" alone may have listeners groping for their seatbelts. The album also features a pair of obligatory pop tracks, Lara Fabian's "The Dream Within" (which makes good use of Goldenthal's romantic themes) and L'Arc-en-Ciel's "Spirit Dreams Inside" (which doesn't). --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Race to Old New York.......2007-04-01

-I'm not big on RPG's so I don't know much about the "Final Fantasy" games, but I do hear that the scores are largely excellent so I was a bit surprised when the game composer wasn't used and the great Elliot Goldenthal was brought in instead. Unlike the movie which is a beautiful disappointment, the score is fantastic and definitely one of the best from this very underrated composer that does not get the respect he deserves.

-The best piece of music on the album and one of the best musical cues I've heard in my life is "Race to Old New York" which starts off with this fast moving strings that plays this simple melody, then shortly after the brass comes in and picks up the melody which keeps going to the short cue comes to it's natural resolution. I don't seem to remember hearing that cue in the movie which was a shame because it's so wonderful.

-Other tracks that should make glad that you have ears are "The Phantom Plains", "Dead Rain", "Code Red", "Music for Dialogues", "Winged Serpent", "Zeus Cannon", and "Adagio and Transfiguration". I love how he blends the techno stuff with the orchestral elements in "Dead Rain" and "Winged Serpent" is just creepy as hell. "Zeus Cannon" is a majestic piece that sounds like the music that should accompany a Greek god. "Music for Dialogues" is a great piece that should be familiar territory for all Goldenthal fans.

-There is an isolated track on the DVD which is great, but Goldenthal seems to have the same problem that great composer Marco Beltrami has, which is to talk over the music. Most of the cues he does talk over are on the album so it's not that big of a problem, although I do wish he would have actually talked for the scenes when there was no music. 10 minutes would pass by and we won't hear a peep from him, but he is a brilliant composer so I guess we can forgive his lack of great DVD commentaries.

-Even if you find the movie to be a little disappointing, the score should keep you interested. It's fresh, it's great and gives birth to "Race to Old New York" which should be included in any filmmusic geek's top 50 of great musical cues of all time

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece........2006-11-28

I cannot express how finely crafted this score is. Goldenthal is one of my favorite composers (not just for film) and this is definitely one of his highlights. I believe that where this score really shines is Elliot's way of making really simple musical ideas sound extremely intense and grand. For example, Race to Old New York, one of my favorite cues, has an extremely powerful opening that is nothing but a string ensemble racing up and down a g minor chord. Yet it instantly exposes many raw emotions that other composers would need a few movements of a symphony to convey. Most of Goldenthal's trademarks can be found in this score. Horn tone clusters, near-atonal trills on brass, and HUGE, no, EPIC orchestrations that we fell in love with in Titus. The glass harmonica (and the way Elliot employs it) found its way into this film from the score for Interview with the Vampire. I could go on, but I won't. This is a remarkable CD by one of the best living composers (now that Ligeti is no longer with us).

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2006-02-09

This has to be Goldenthal's best score to date! It's an orchestral masterpiece performed by none other than the London Symphony Orchestra.

Let me explain a few awesome tracks before giving the downside to this release.

The album opens with ambient noise and dark choir, much like Horner's Aliens. The second track, "Race to Old New York", doesn't appear on the film, or as this cue version does on the album. It's played by racing strings and low brass. Very good track and one of my favorites.

"The Kiss" proves to Hollywood and Goldenthal skeptics that he is able to pull of romantic, soothing themes. "The Kiss" is a romantic theme played by piano with some strings.

"Toccata and Dreamscapes" is the longest and most difficult track to perform. Goldenthal employs 40 French horns (!) to blast, grunt and shrill away every once in a while during the percussion and interrupted string action. One of the best tracks!

"Adagio and Transfiguration" closes the score album with a sad, sweeping reprise of the romantic theme and finishes on a solo trumpet.

Between all of these reviewed tracks are mixtures of sweeping cues, rolling strings, tense moments and dark choir. All this makes for a very diverse range of music on about 50 minutes of score for this release.

The album ends with two songs. Lara Fabian's rendition of the love theme in pop form is nice but is ruined by the last song on the album not worth mentioning. The rock song ruins the entire listening experience.

The Complaints:
One I've already mentioned: the stupid rock song at the end of the CD; two, the music is not in chronological order, but I guess it makes for a better listening experience; and three, much good music is missing! "Dead Rain" is almost 8 minutes long on the film and we only get about 2 minutes on the album cut. The good thing about the special edition DVD is that we get the option of an isolated track and commentary by Elliot Goldenthal. Goldenthal is smart leaving the music cues that didn't appear on the album uncommented.

Get this soundtrack and the special edition DVD. They're worth every penny!

3 out of 5 stars "Where's my second disc?" (sarcasm).......2005-09-15

If you've seen Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within DVD, you've probably listened to the isolated score with commentary by Elliot Goldenthal, during which you will notice that he talks over certain bits of score but leaves other chunks of score alone, un-interrupted.

It more or less translates to this: The sections of score he talks over seem to all be here on the soundtrack and well covered. The several chunks of score he doesn't talk over some over eight minutes in length: completely axed and not used for this soundtrack.

"Dead Rain" is missing about seven minutes of great scoring which blend into it seemlessly in the film. Why do those responsible for cutting the score for a film's soundtrack axe some of the better parts (in my mind) in exchange for one or two tracks that don't seem to tell as much of a story? I've experienced this with so many scores I've bought. Exceptional pieces used in films getting axed.. and for what? The expense of a second disc? I'd gladly pay for a second disc or for a third folks. I really would, especially with scores like this.

Which is why I'm giving this soundtrack 3 stars. Not because the music sucks, it's great and I enjoyed every minute of it. Just remember to own the film on DVD as well as this soundtrack so you can get a little extra from Elliot.

4 out of 5 stars Goldenthal at his peak performance.......2005-07-22

Elliot Goldenthal wrote a grand, majestic score for the computer-animated science-fiction spectacle "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within." The music bursts with roaring brass under climactic string arpeggios, carrying the listener high on a violent tidal wave, when suddenly the wave is broken and settles down with a soft female voice humming over an elusive and beautiful melody played on the piano. There's a sparse use of the synthesizer, apart from some choir effects in the background and echoing ambient sounds. The accent is very much on music played by a big orchestra.
This film doubtlessly features one of Goldenthal's best film scores. It's rich and inspired in every scene and every take. It keeps your attention, down to the last minute on the album. The music for the dream sequences is the most complex and grand, with a complex combination of percussion, string arpeggios and brass - often culminating like a thunderstorm, but always leaving a calm resuscitation behind. Buy this if you like modern, complex, grand music and lush sweeping "dreamscape" music.

This one gets 4 stars.

Album Description

One of America's most prolific and successful composers, Mrs H. H. A. ("Amy") Beach was one of the first women composers whose works were as highly regarded as those produced by men. Best known during her lifetime for her well-crafted songs and short piano pieces, she was also the first American woman to compose in the larger forms. Beach's 117 art songs span the whole of her compositional career. By incorporating musical ideas from many cultures and musical traditions within a late-Romantic framework, Beach's songs show her skillful craftsmanship and profound understanding of text.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Some of the greatest songs in classical music.......2007-07-25

Even though I really enjoyed the other Naxos Beach CD, I was surprprised by how many chills and tears I experienced in this collection of songs. Beach has a way of perfectly expressing the lyrics which are mainly poems and are included in the CD liner notes. As a whole the songs express Beach's compositional skills and her personal life. The songs contain several lullabies and poems about death. They are perfectly performed by the the mezzo and piano . Please buy these songs they do rise to the level of schumann ans Shubert.
Please excuse typos I have a neurologic disease.

I take private voice lessons from Kathie Kelton and she is amazing! She brings Amy Beach's music to life! I strongly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys listening to classical and operatic music. The music is so beautiful it will give you chills! Fantastic!

4 out of 5 stars Killer rhythms get the groove on in a celebratory mood.......2007-08-05

Playing Time - 50:50 -- Within nature, certain ambient elements can be found in all corners of the world. These include soil, water, air, flora and fauna. Within musical soundscapes, the global elements of melody, tempo and rhythm characterize all genres to some extent. Drums and shakers provide a common language that translates to many genres. Percussionist Ido Ziv, originally from Israel, presents a tantalizing fusion of the African, Cuban, Latin, Caribbean and Celtic music. Besides the many instruments he plays, Ziv's highly cadenced and metrical original music includes guitars, bass, sax, uillean pipes, tinwhistle, low whistle, flute, kora, piano, vocals, and other global flavors to varying extent.

If there's one criticism with the many layers on "Assiya," it could be that more pieces could have been arranged with leaner arrangements and slightly sparer settings like "Mozambique Time," the shortest track (at 2 minutes) that is just a conga solo. Dynamics of the entire set still provide ebbs and flows with tempo changes and spicy nstrumental flavorings. Ziv is always front and center with his indefatigable energy and rhythmic presence. While conceptually sound, "Reelwind" and "Zinbau" are two examples where there almost seems to be too much beating, striking and thumping. Brian McCoy is an outstanding piper, but I'm just not used to hearing so much heavy percussion in a Celtic-inspired offering like "Reelwind." Incorporating of a second percussionist (Sula Da Silva) into the closing track, "Zingbau," eventually gets too busy with sound effects and whistles that downplay Ziv's tasty showcase conga rhythms previously heard. Midway through a more meandering "Alchemy's Cellar," the sound effects of people at a festive event just become distracting.

For me, the most enchanting selections are those where jazzy tints (It Don't Come Easy, Cheetah Surprise) are allowed to manifest themselves. Interestingly, key collaborator Ari Mendes (guitars, bass) appears in every other track, and he brings a certain pleasurable consciousness to those offerings. A mellower new agey "All My Beginnings" is the longest track and provides expressive musicality as the song evolves. Yacouba Sissoko's kora and M'mah Doumbouya's vocals also make "Positive Relations" a favorite experience that takes traditional African sounds into contemporary electro-pop territory laden with MIDI percussion and programming. Other friends assisting on the project include Robert Kirby (sax), Kim Rattan (guitar), Rich Barrett (piano), John Wubbenhorst (bansuri, flute, tambora), Steve Zerlin (bass), and Peter Fand (bass).

All in all, Ido Ziv knows how to lay down killer rhythms to get the groove on. There's a celebratory mood to his mostly uptempo material, but I only wish that Ziv had used his skill as a percussionist in a more articulated fashion with less overall multi-tracking. While highly arranged and synchronized, Assiya's polyrhythmic essence also provides periodic imagery and visions of a disordered world desperately in need of peace and harmony. (Joe Ross)

I've been playing Assiya from Ido Ziv non-stop for days now. This album blends many different types of music into one great sound. The tunes are hypnotic at times, held together by some excellent drumming. I highly recommend this amazing disc.
