Even without a single vocal,this is a lot of fun to listen to.Great instrumental rock.Satriani's best album and no weak material.Essential for fans of 80's metal and for fans of guitar oriented rock.Joe Satriani influenced a lot of guitarists including Dimebag and Zakk Wylde.Great job,Joe.

His sound has clearly improved over the years so this might not be the best place to start but when you get hooked this has to be in the collection. Can recommend the latest Live cd/dvd which also contains some of the numbers and personally I would say it sounds better then the studio track

I think this album created the "guitar-god" phenomenon. Joe Satriani is without peer. SWtA samples numerous different styles with amazing technique. Someone listening to this now may not be quite as impresses by the technical tricks but keep in mind--no one was doing this stuff before Satriani.

Sure, there were plenty of amazing shredders that emerged in the 80s and 90s (and a couple new ones today) who might give Satriani some competition as far as technique, but none who are also as gifted of songwriters. There's actual music here instead of just fodder for guitar-nuts. Everyone should have this album.

Superlative Guitar Rock Album.......2006-09-29

Joe Satriani is unquestionably one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time. He influenced as many guitarists as he was influenced by, and manages to set the standard for creativity and technical prowess in the world of instrumental guitar rock. When this album was released back in '87, it was unique and unlike anything else being played at the time. Sure, guitar-shredding was fairly popular, with technicians like Yngwie Malmsteen, Tony MacAlpine, and Vinnie Moore receiving due credit in the world of neoclassical rock, but there was little variation between these artists and their lightning-speed scales, arpeggios and clasically inspired licks.

Joe Satriani managed to release an album which was fresh, powerful and varied. Instead of sticking to one approach for every song the way Yngwie or MacAlpine did, Joe wrote each song as an individual piece of music with its own vibe, message and unique quality. He shows a great deal of restraint, tying his songs together with strong, well-constructed melodies and riffs that can be soloed over or improvised on to create a fluid, progressive piece of music. Every song on this album is a winner, and what makes them work so well together is their differences of style but consistency of quality. No track is alike or could be mistaken for another, but they are all incredible in their own way.

1) Surfing With the Alien - Awesome track that's all over the place. It features some of the album's flashiest playing, with especially exciting tapping and bluesy riffs. It isn't the absolute greatest song on here, but it makes for a fine introductory piece of what's to come. (8/10)

2) Ice 9 - A funky, infectious song with lead guitar playing somewhat reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix, only more futuristic-sounding. As with much of his material, Satch starts out slow and builds up to balls-out shredding. Satch loves to experiment with a variety of guitar tones and sounds, and this song is the perfect showcase for his creative abilities. (8.5/10)

3) Crushing Day - This could be my favorite song on the album, and is definitely one of my favorite Satriani songs of all time. The main melody/lead riff in this song is simply perfect. It's emotional yet driving, and filled with energy that only Satch could deliver. The song also features some awesome soloing and great rhythm guitar. Satriani's tone sounds simply amazing here. (9.5/10)

4) Always With Me, Always With You - Here is another excellent, trademark Satriani song which has become a favorite among listeners, including myself. It's more subdued than some of the faster songs on here, and features a "brown sound" lead guitar tone comparable to Van Halen, soloing with lush melodies over a clean rhythm section. The overall feel of it is warm, passionate and electrifying. (9.5/10)

5) Satch Boogie - This isn't my favorite song on the album, but it's still quite cool. It's very energetic and filled with rapid-fire blues bends and artificial harmonics. The rhythm section, as the title suggests, is pure boogie blues. The way Satch soloes over the rhythm section is what makes this song appealing--he uses finger-tapping, neoclasiscal sounding scales and phrasing, along with straight ahead blues-rock to give the song a sense of immediacy and impulsivity. It's a fast, ruthless song which fits in well with the collection. (8/10)

6) Hill of the Skull - Here is the album's first most unique song, and also one of its two shortest. Clocking in at under 2 minutes, the song is a brief foray into brooding, atmospheric territory. It actually would have been cool if the song were more progressive and lengthier, but it works well as a miniature experiment, all the same. It features some of the most heartfelt, classically influenced melodies on the album, but still manages to sound incredibly original. No shredding here, just slow, dirging guitar melody and a similarly grave rhythm section. (8.5/10)

7) Circles - A cool, laid back rhythm intro erupts into pounding, distorted riffs and frenzied lead guitar work. Joe Satriani's lead guitar tone sounds in fine form here. The song switches back to the mellow vibe that it started out with. (8.5/10)

8) Lords of Karma - Kind of a strange, mysterious song which sounds deliciously 80's, but has that trademark space-age Satriani sound to it which is present through this album. Here is a great example of why Satriani was so ahead of his time with this album--there is no other song or artist that I can think of to compare this particular song to. Even the name is original. The soloing is, of course, pretty similar to other shred-fare seen during the 80's, only slightly more fluid and progressive. Satriani knows what he's doing. (9/10)

9) Midnight - The shortest track on the album, this song starts out a bit like Eddie Van Halen's Spanish Fly. The clean tapping sounds amazingly smooth and bell-like. After the Spanish Fly reminiscent intro, the song gets slightly more brooding with the addition of keyboard and rhythm section. It returns to the classical-sounding guitar tapping. Awesome little track. (8.5/10)

10) Echo - As the album's closer, this one is expected to be great, which it is. It's one of the album's highlights, and manages to incorporate just about every element which makes Satriani's playing excellent. It's more serious and contemplative than something like the title track of Satch Boogie, but is still a showcase for Joe's technical abilities. It's the album's longest song, and the most progressive, giving a real sense of journey and evolution over the course of 5 and a half minutes. As expected, it sounds fresh and futuristic, combining simple elements in an unusual and amazingly skilled manner to produce a completely original work. (9.5/10)

This is a must-have album, and despite its short length, is still one of the best values for anyone willing to spend money on a cd these days. In 37 minutes, Joe covers more ground than most guitarists cover in their entire careers. The album has been around for 20 years and it doesn't sound a bit dated.

Interstellar travel in your headphones........2007-05-31

Well, Stargate SG.1 has finally ended after 10 seasons, and this soundtrack CD covers only the first two. I think there's room for a new CD or two, and hopefully the Stargate SG.1 people will get around to creating one.

Anyway, I've listened to this CD once so far and I was very impressed. The music really is enjoyable on its own, and I found myself listening to the Cold Lazerus music twice before I continued throught the rest of the CD.

Finally, don't think there isn't much music on this CD because of the small nunber of tracks. Many of these tracks are six to ten minutes long.

Stargate Music Album.......2007-05-12

Great CD throughout. It's a shame the show is being cancelled after 10 years but this music helps to keep the memory on.

Not as good as the 1st Music release.......2004-10-24

The best of Stargate SG-1 is infact a 9 track compilation of the 1st 2 seasons of the TV show. It's really not the best of Stargate. I rather enjoyed the 1st release namely called Music of Stargate SG-1 and the actual movie music-score. However I still enjoyed the music from several episodes of the 2nd season, most notable being the music suite of Hathor.

A fan of the TV show should be pleasantly surprised by the suites in this CD. It won't disapoint.

one for the fans.......2004-05-07

This CD is really one for the fans. If you've not watched Stargate SG-1 before, then it will be very limited in its' appeal.
I personally enjoyed the CD, as I could relate the music back to the particular episodes in which they appeared. Some of the tracks are sweet and melodic, others are more ominious, so it doesn't come up short on variety.
The music sounds, for the most part, rather sythesised (which is why, if you are used to sprawling epic soundtracks from mainstram movies, I generally don't recommend this if you have never watched the show). Tracks are usually a mixture of synthesised sounds combined with more organic notes from traditional instruments, creating a very "sci fi" sound.
This is a great CD to work and study to as it provides great background music without being too intrusive.

Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Rock bastardizations of classical music are as old as Kim Fowley's--and ELP's--Tchaikovsky tweaking "Nutrocker." But classical interpretations of rock music have generally been something of a high-wire act. While most pop fare has strong melodic foundations for the soloist to build from, Christopher O'Riley has challenged himself here with the catalog of Radiohead, one of modern rock's most acclaimed--and texturally complex--bands. O'Riley's insightful gifts for interpretation (which have previously enlightened everything from Stravinsky to P.D.Q. Bach) produce a hypnotic, emotionally compelling listening experience here; O'Riley is a huge Radiohead fan, and that love courses through everything from the dreamy, bittersweet title track through the brooding loveliness of "Let Down." Radiohead's stock in trade is dense, multi-layered music that leans heavily on electronic processing for its moody sonic atmospherics; O'Riley's evokes those complex textures with but a judicious use of the sustain peddles, a deft use of dissonance (as on "Knives Out"), and a rhythmically anxious left hand. Call them etudes for the post-modern age if you will, but O'Riley's performances here largely achieve what all great interpretations strive for: New insight and enlightenment. --Jerry McCulley

Looking Forward, Looking Back.......2007-03-02

Ove the last decade or so, Radiohead has created some of the most complex and futuristic rock music out there, and I wondered if a solo pianist could really capture their essence on a single instrument. However, O'Riley does a marvelous job, and brilliantly conveys the melancholy, mysterious, and introspective qualities of Radiohead's music. His renditions of "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Let Down" are particularly powerful. What I really loved about this cd is while I could follow all of the songs he played, at times I felt like I was listening to an breathtaking piano sonata by Mozart or Beethoven, and even a Nocturne by Chopin. Overall, this is a faithful interpretation by an excellent musician who honors one of the greatest bands in recent times, while also paying hommage to his musical heritage. This cd is a must for even the casual Radiohead fan or anyone who enjoys the piano.

i love almost all kinds of music. piano and radiohead really works for me, i liked the whole thing. if you can get into some piano, you can get into this cd. if you dig radiohead, get into it purely because someone took the time to put some awesome songs into yet another form for more audiences to get into. its beautiful. thats all there is to say.

a transcription worthy of Franz Liszt.......2006-12-08

This is a beautiful recording. Try playing it for music loving frends who would never listen to a band like Radiohead. They won't believe it when you tell them the source of this richly textured heartbreakingly melodic tour de force. I'm in my late 50's and love Mahler, Sibelius,and Beethoven. I also love Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, John Fahey and Wilco. Good music can come along in any time and I'm glad that Christopher O'Riley loves Radiohead and transcribed it for solo piano; he's missed nothing in the process. If your not choked-up by the end of this CD, music must not be your thing.

Sleepytime music.......2006-03-27

Being the total Radiohead fanatic that I am, I decided to pick this up when it came out... perhaps a fresh take on their music would breath some life back into the songs I've been listening into the ground, I thought. So I took it up into the mountains with me and listened to it for a bit. My reaction to it now is similar to then: it's a dreamy if somewhat insubstantial collection of vaguely familiar tunes.

All of the playing on this disc is superb on the technical level... obviously O'riley is a top notch classical performer. The arrangements are a mixed bag, though. There are some amazing renditions on here - see the impressionistic 'Everything In Its Right Place' and the melancholy coffee house arrangement of 'Knives Out'. Some others are also quite listenable, including 'Subterranean Homesick Alien', 'Exit Music', 'Bulletproof', and 'Motion Picture Soundtrack'. However, the upbeat pop tunes have difficult translating to solo piano. the Pablo Honey tunes suffer the worst here, and feel slightly unnatural; perhaps like a classical pianist paying tribute to a favorite band, rather than the more personal adaptations that make the 'Knives Out' arrangement so effective.

Overall, a nice cd to put on in the background when you're reading or settling in to bed, but Radiohead fanatics beware - don't expect anything that lives up to the band's immense standards.

Nice sound.......2006-02-17

I didn't even know Radiohead songs...but now I've listened to the originals and can hear how O'Riley captures the songs on the piano. This is a great album.

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Five years before the release of ANThology, Alien Ant Farm befriended Papa Roach, then fellow strugglers on the California club circuit. And so AAF wound up signing to Papa Roach's New Noise Records. AAF have furthermore strengthened their Roach connection by employing Jay Baumgardner, producer of their benefactors' Infest, to lend sheen to the noise. The result doesn't show a tremendous range, but is generally excellent, with sweeping, soaring guitars ("Whisper," "Stranded") and shuddering riffs ("Wish"), putting one in mind of a less disturbing version of Alice in Chains. Standouts include the opener, "Courage," led by Mike Cosgrove's off-kilter clatter and Dryden Mitchell's winding lyrics; a chopping, pleading cover of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal"; and the revved up "Flesh and Bone." With the tense, Pearl Jam-like "Attitude," AAF attempt to change the mood and tempo, and one hopes they'll continue such sonic explorations. I found this cd in a cd changer I bought off ebay so I thought I would check it out. I had heard Smooth Criminal, Movies, and Attitude and knew they were pretty good but I was surprised how good the rest of the songs were. Whatever happened to these guys?

The best ever re-make of a Michael Jackson song! Band sounds tight and has rythm but this style of music tends to sound the same.

I dont understand everyone who is like "hey man, this isnt harcore enough. The only good song is Smooth Criminal. Michael Jackson's cd is better." Did you even listen to the other songs on the cd? and if your so hardcore why did you buy the CD in the first place. I enjoyed almost every song on Anthology. and truANT. And their new cd Up in the Attic which you can get on i tunes or buy on amazon end of june.

One great album.......2006-02-20

First off this is the album that got me into music period! I got it for my 13th birthday. Prior to this album. I barely listened to music at all. Smooth Criminal is an excellent cover of MJ's original from the bad album.

I ask that anyone who reads this review, please don't listen to the haters that write a one paragraph piece of crap review of this album. I can understand that some people won't like the album, but don't be a hater. People do think that AAF does bad music that is about death, but the thing is that they use metaphors in their songs and make you think a little bit.

For example:
Happy death day isn't a song about killing everyone in the world or something. It is about when you hate someone so much and you wish them dead, but in the back of your mind you know that is they did die you would be devistated.

This record is truly a great album. I had a couple of friends who were hating on AAF a few weeks ago and I had them listen to one of their songs and they are now borrowing the album. That's how good it is. I also have gone through 2 copies and I need to get a 3rd soon!

Orange Appeal.......2006-01-13

This album is astounding. I first heard it about two years ago, and it still amazes me. Within those two years, I have found many reasons to absolutely love this CD.

Some of my favourites:
Courage-Very, very cool guitars. I get an outerworldly experience when I hear it. 9/10

Movies-Lyrically, one of the best on the album. Musically, it floors me how much emotion is put into this song from the singing to the instruments. 10/10

Flesh and Bone-A religious song. Not in your face, like Creed would do it, but quite subtly and nicely. This song is bass driven, like most of the tracks. 10/10

Whisper-Harder, more edgier. I don't think the subject matter pertains to regular people though [it's about record producers.] 9/10

Summer-Corny chorus. Good song. Heartfelt. You could hear the frustration and desperation in Dryden Vera Mitchell's voice. 9/10

Attitude-I get goosebumps when I hear this song. Slow, no guitar pounding. It's such a wonderful song, and it's definitely in my top ten Best Songs Ever list. 10/10

All in all, buy this album. Don't be disillusioned by the fact that they are protegees of Papa Roach. They sound NOTHING like that suck-fest. ANThology is my favourite album. It is not perfect, but it is really damn good. They don't need to curse or spew nonsencical, supposedly "deep" lyrics. They keep it simple, and it works out magnificently. The hidden track is gorgeous as well.

Only 7 Tracks, But Great Variety And Great Songs!.......2007-03-02

This album is a bit short, and VERY sweet. I also own Fire Garden, which I really like, and The Ultra Zone, which can be a bit strange at times, but that is just Vai's eccentric style. I would say that there is strangeness on this album too; the track Ya-Yo Gakk. Aside from that and a somewhat schizophrenic track Kill The Guy With The Ball/The God Eaters, it is quality musicianship and several different styles of it. Very enjoyable music from a very talented man.

Some Genius, Some OK.......2006-09-16

One thing that I love about Steve Vai is that he rarely resorts to making a song out of drums, a repeating bass line, and a guitar solo a la Yngwie Malmsteen, but keeps the melody through his songs. He has just the right amount of solo in his music, which is shown in this CD.

Alien Love Secrets has three AMAZING songs, Bad Horsie, Juice, and Tender Surrender. Tender Surrender perfectly builds tension and lets it all go in a second, perfectly. The Boy from Seattle and Kill the Guy with the Ball are both solid songs also.

Die to Live random at times, and I didn't much care for it. Ya-Yo Gakk is funny the first time you hear it, but gets annoying thereafter.

I would recommend this CD. It certainly has some 1st class music on it, and my three favorite Steve Vai songs.

One of Vai's Very Best Releases!.......2006-06-27

The only down-side of this CD is that it's short. Even so, it's easily a 5 star CD and it features some of Vai's very finest studio guitar work. Song by song:

Bad Horsie: this is a drop-tuned monster of a nightmarish tune: picture yourself riding a locomotive as though it were a steam-belching, fire-breathing steed, and that's kind of what you get here... shrieking, insane guitar, wah-pedal galore, slide guitar, whammy bar, blazing solos, etc.... on his "Live at Astoria" DVD, vai introduces this song with, "Welcome to the heavy metal portion of the evening..." which was pretty accurate: this is a HEAVY tune.

Juice: shorter, often compared to Eric Johnson's "Cliffs of Dover" because it has a similar joyous and bouncy vibe about it; but whereas Johnson plays stuff I had previously thought too beautiful to achieve with a pentatonic scale, Vai is more like "Cliffs of Dover" ON STEROIDS: no particular scale adhered to, just some fo the VERY BEST GUITAR SOLOING I've ever herad from Steve Vai, or anybody for that matter... he does that tap/hammer stuff where both hands are moving all over, and yet keep in mind: this is all done over the top of a bouncy, joyous theme. This is just a GREAT song. Amazing!

Die to Live: this is also short, and for me, is an exercise in nuance and tone: I have the music for this CD and I can almost play this song... I can't play it anything like Vai, though, because he plays with just exactly the right dynamics in every situation with the amp set just perfectly, and while the song is nothing like Juice in terms of sheer shredding speed or agility, he does flow from section to section in this song with such fluid effortlessness... it's astounding! And yes, for pure listening enjoyment, it's a very beautiful song. Once again: amazing!

The Boy From Seattle: good chord-strumming kinda thing: again very difficult to play with the sort of effortlessness that Vai achieves: tonally brilliant, getting the pop and snap out of the cleaner-sounding amp that he does here. And once again, in terms of simple aesthetics: a very nice tune to listen to.

Ya-Yo Gakk: entertaining little tune featuring Vai's two year old toddler singing "Ya-Yo Gakk" which Vai then answers with his guitar, mimicking all the little nuances of the youngster's voice... entertaining, imaginative, and obviously extraordinaily difficult to accomplish, but not as fun for the listener after just a couple spins.

Kill the Guy With the Ball / the God Eaters: uptempo featuring some sort of crazy noisemaking that sounds like his guitar is making weird noises from "the back of its throat (for lack of a better way of explaining it)... heavy on the drums in this one; the end of the song has a lot of guitar effects... I'd summarize this as one of those whacked-out Vai extravaganzas that's unfortunately not quite as accessible as the rest.

Tender Surrender: brilliant instrumental ballad: just stark, flat-out amazing. The depth of emotion he achieves on this tune, particularly during the guitar solo and during the transition out of it back to the main theme: astonishing! It may be the best guitar solo he's every played: not in term of the number of notes, but just in how well it fits and where it goes emotionally. I rank this as overall the best instrumental ballad that Vai has EVER written thus far: slightly AHEAD of both "For the Love of God" and "Whispering a Prayer". He was nominated for a grammy for this song, which should tell you how accessible it is to the less-guitar-crazed listener, and yet it's still a mind-blowing technical experience as well. Brilliant! Bravo!

In summary: five GREAT songs here, and 2 that are off-the-charts mind-blowing. Even with the two somewhat weaker tunes and even with there only being 7 songs and it being a short CD, this is still an easy 5-star review: that's how good the really good tunes are: this is a must-own for any Vai fan and any guitar nut, but even beyond that it's just plain good music.

...WOW...........2006-04-06

I am not sure how it gets better as far as EP's go. Vai has created what could very well be some of the most creative music that I have ever heard. His melodies and explorations are far more interesting than that common guitar instrumentalist. He is in his own style as well. Each song on this recording is unique. Bad Horsie *originated from the movie Crossroads*, is a brilliant heavy metal tune, with a lot of wah and incredible sounds...so many things that can be said about this song...but it's probably one of the finest opening tracks on any rock cd out there. My favorite of the album is Tender Surrender, which could be my favorite '7th Song' by Vai. Amazing...

Get this album...you won't be sorry.

Only......about perfect............2006-02-05

I would have given this album only 4 stars, only when i listened all the way through and noticed that there werent any simpering Lead Singers on it, I pushed it to an astounding 5 Stars.
Musicians Rule and Singers droll...Thanks steve more then worth the cover charge......A true reflection of the work that you put into this craft....

Great total album.......2006-11-04

I probably can think of about 30 albums that are great from start to finish in my 35 or so years seriously listening to music. This is one of them.

I bought it for In The Meantime, but found that I really enjoyed playing the entire album more than just listening to that song on replay. The songs tell a story and fit together so well.

Don't judge an album by its single........2006-03-04

In the Meantime was a big hit and I thought it was a great song. I bought this album for that song. I listened to it several times but each time the rest of the music got worse and worse. This is the only album I have ever given away. It is awful. DO NOT BUY THIS RECORD. If you like the single then buy the single. This band should not be encouraged.

Brilliant.......2005-12-29

I bought this albumn about 9 years ago, because a sample (the telephone) was used on a TV ad (unsurprisingly for a telco - One-2-One I think). Obviously "In the meantime" was brilliant, and the rest of the albumn was pretty good.

About a week ago, though, I picked it up again, and it hasn't been off the CD player since. Fantastic. It always played glam rock at its own game, and Royston has those wonderful take-the-piss-out-of-Axl-Rose vocals; but now I can see - the band did The Darkness, before the Darkness had seen the light of day. The tunes are fun, and skillfully played. The lyrics ingenious in their playfullness. And Shipwrecked is a ballad to break your heart, then trample all over the scattered remains with the hobnail boots of feedback enhanced rock guitar.

This is brilliant; go and buy it!

Off the beaten path.......2004-05-06

I first learned about Spacehog through the news. The singer, Royston Langdon (aka "The Luckiest Man Alive") married Liv "Arwen Evenstar" Tyler in 2001. This made headlines at the time, as it was incontrovertible proof that even the homeliest of guys can hit the jackpot every now and then.

Three things strike me about this album:

First, is it quirky? Yep. Off the beaten path? Definitely. But underneath this somewhat bizarre album is a collection of strong and well crafted songs written by people who are quite talented songsmiths.

Secondly, they're very well produced. They have a great sound, and whoever the producer is deserves an award. The band's strengths are played up. The mix is just right. The sound they get out of their instruments is simply phenomenal. It's perfect for their style of music.

Thirdly, the singer, Royston Langdon, has a strangly intriguing voice. I'm not sure it would carry well in a more traditional band, but it's perfect for what Spacehog does.

Pigs in spaaaaaaace........2004-04-04

Though I'm sure they're mostly thought of as a one-hit-wonder, man what a hit. "In The Meantime" has got to be one of the coolest songs of the mid-90's. After that the songs aren't as good, but still similar, and mostly interesting. Actually I think "Cruel To Be Kind" was a minor hit as well. Their sound is definitely retro-glam, like a "David Bowie" or "Elton John" influenced 90's alt-rock band. By now this disc is probably in every used store across the country, and well worth the price you could get it for. After a few listens, you'll realize "Space Is The Place".
