    Thank you, record companies of America for letting another masterpiece get by you and under the radar (but probably not the pocketbooks) of discerning domestic listeners. I've heard an awful lot, including maybe 40-50 "full-strength" Oscar Peterson trio albums, but nothing to equal this Monty Alexander session.

    A live date at some motel in Buffalo, New York, this was one of those "once only" occasions on which the chemistry could not have been more volatile, explosive or kinetic. Monty's work-out on "It Could Happen to You," a marathon 20+ minutes of heated swinging that just keeps building and building, then throwing the listener by hinting at a cadence only to repeat the process, is one not just for the record but the record books. It's a performance that only someone as talented, energetic, young and foolish as Monty was at the time could have pulled off. And whereas Oscar often overwhelms the listener, filling all of the space with his pianistics, Monty manages to include the listener every step of the way.

    Eugene Wright was known as Dave Brubeck's bassist but not, especially, as a dominating walker. Bobby Durham was known as Oscar Peterson's drummer (i.e. percussion-athlete). These three guys on this night simply served up a non-repeatable musical event. This is the epitome of "swing"--the first recording I go to when demonstrating what Duke Ellington meant by his famous statement.

    [Note: The transfer on this Universal Classics-Japan disc is adequate, but I'm not convinced it was made from the master tape. The piano lacks the warmth and naturalness of the LP version; at times Wright's bass is gratuitously (irritatingly) boosted in the mix; the percussion may be slightly brighter (that part's OK). Also, the booklet is in Japanese, and the reproduction of the orginal liner notes on the back of the MPS LP is without a doubt the most illegible such attempt I have ever seen--completely useless. All the same, until/if we see better, and if you're not willing to go bidding for a mint copy of the LP on eBay, the performance, the program, the chemistry make this one indispensable.]

    Ray Conniff's music featured the talents of the singers in this collection of songs that became popular in the late 60s and early 70s. I enjoyed the arrangements by the chorus including the title tracks! These songs still are enjoyed by fans of Conniff today! Worth a listen!

    Well, the master did it again. These two albums from 1970 and 1971 are marvelous and I never get tired of listening to them.

    These recordings do not sound the least bit dated! I like all of the songs on "We've Only Just Begun". Ray does great covers "Close to You", "Everything Is Beautiful", "Let It Be", "I'll Be There", the title track, and a magnificent version of "Make It with You". That's Ray singing on "Everybody Knows", an original and happy track tailor made by Ray.

    "Love Story" is another exciting album, with one of the best versions of "Where Do I Begin", which of course was the theme from "Love Story". This, like all Conniff albums, is just marvelous and unique.

    Easily, these two albums on one CD get five stars.

    In a 1975 interview with rock critic Tom Nolan, Richard Carpenter noted that the problem with 'greatest hits' albums is that most folks who have enough material to release them have so many actual hits that one has to put it on more than one record. But if you play your cards right and cash in at just the right time - you can do it. And with this recording, the Carpenters flat out did it.

    If you've ever wondered about the Carpenters and are interested ONLY in hits, THIS is the CD you need to buy - bar none. "Yesterday Once More," the two volume set is fine but you get the later Carpenters that sounded more like a lounge act than the hottest brother-sister duo of the 1970s.     This is the greatest CD hits collection I have ever heard of ANY group that is all on one volume.

      Paul Williams came out to Hollywood in search of an acting career, and hes done some interesting parts, including succeeding Michael Dunn as Dr Loveless, Jr. in The Wild Wild West and the character Swan in Phantom Of The Paradise. He also starred alongside Kermit and Miss Piggy in The Muppet Movie. But it was as a songwriter, and subsequently a performer, that he earned his greatest fame. After he signed on with A&M as staff writer (teamed up with Roger Nichols), several of the duos tunes were recorded as b-sides and album tracks by various A&M artists, but their first significant commercial breakthrough came when Out In The Country became a Top 20 hit for Three Dog Night. Not long thereafter, they wrote a jingle for Crocker Bank, Weve Only Just Begun, that was warmly embraced by the public, including a young Richard Carpenter. He saw it as a potential hit track, if expanded past the sixty-second confines of a television spot. He was right. The Carpenters version of the tune went gold and hit #2 on the pop charts on its way to becoming perhaps the second-most played tune at weddings, following the ubiquitous Mendelssohn march. Welcome to the big time. Williams signed to A&M as an artist, making his solo album debut with 1971's Just An Old Fashioned Love Song, and throughout the Seventies he recorded half a dozen discs for the label. While he is modest about his singing talent, theres an intimacy to his versions of many of his hits that renders them immediately engaging. Like many artists, he went through a bad patch in his personal life in the Eighties, but he has emerged triumphant on the other side, and continues to write and perform. Spanning the half-dozen years he was with the A&M label, Evergreens offers a unique insight into one of pop musics great songwriters, both as writer and performer. And for people who dont know Williams work as a singer, it places into a new context songs that have occupied considerable acreage.

      I was a Claudine fan in the days of vinyl. If you liked her in the 70's, I think you'll like this album better still. "Peace Will Come" is excellent, as is "Electric Moon," "Wake Up to Me," and "Remember the Good." These could have been chart songs, could have given her a reputation as a serious interpreter of very interesting unusual songs, that none of her 60's - 70's songs ever could have done. They aren't just pretty, breathy songs in the Claudine style - they are great writing presented in a way that really brings out what the song writer must have had in mind - and, they are songs that you probably haven't heard elsewhere. Of course, a number of her covers on this CD are forgettable. But get the CD (because iTunes has never heard of her) and copy off the best songs.

        This is a facinating album. It was originally released in 1970 as a 'Demo' album to promote the songwriting tallents of the then new songwriting team of Paul Williams & Roger Nichols. All the songs are sung by Paul Williams himself.

        The album contains some facinating versions of songs that were to appear on a number of Paul Williams subsequent solo albums (So Many People, Time, Someday Man & Do You Really Have a Heart from the 1970 album Someday Man; We've Only Just Begun & Let Me Be The One (both also recorded by The Carpenters) from the 1971 album Just an Old Fashioned Love Song; and Out In The Country (also recorded by Three Dog Night) from the 1972 album Life Goes On.) The remaining songs (After All, Somebody Waiting, The Drifter, When Love Is Near and I Keep On Loving You) are unique to this album.

        Altogether a facinating album and a unique opportunity to hear the beginnings of one of the greatest singer / songwriters...doing what he does best...singing his own songs
