Customer Reviews:
Wonderful..........2006-06-22
I have had the privilege (yes privilege) to perform all the works of Tavener that are recorded on this CD. As an Organist/Choirmaster I have also had the pleasure of my choirs performing many of the works heard here, i.e. Funeral Ikos, The Tyger, The Lamb, Alleluia (Song for Athene), and Two Hymns to the Mother of God, amongst many others. His music is quite captivating and sometimes quite heart-wrenching. I know when "Funeral Ikos" was performed at the funeral services for a former Priest (Episcopalian), there wasn't a dry eye or seat in the place. The choir in this recording is a superb group and as expected, they performed remarkably well. There is no grey area when it comes to the music of John Tavener. If you want a good recording of his choral music, I highly suggest this CD.
Controversial Tavener.......2005-09-05
Wander to over to Classicstoday.com and do a search for all the reviews of Tavener's works. You'll come to the inescapable conclusion: Tavener sucks. What's even more astounding is that this judgement seems to be shared by nearly all in Classicstoday's notoriously fractious stable of critics. Quite a feat.
So, is Tavener as bad as all that? I must confess that I haven't been exposed to what is apparently Tavener's worst stuff. Also, British critics hate self-promotion, and Tavener has practiced self-promotion (and pretension) to a nearly obscene degree. This may get in the way of a serious appraisal of his work.
I find this disk quite pleasant, although I can see how having to endure longer works of Tavener's would be difficult. His musical themes are very simple, and they are worked out in manner that can rather quickly become boring. In these short choral works, which are performed with expert precision, this thematic claustrophobia can actually produce a striking effect.
I have an inkling that there might be something of a Tavener revival 20 or 30 years from now. Make no mistake, he is fathoms below Part, Rautavaara, Hovhaness, Kancheli and Gubaidulina, among composers who write in a similar style. But on this disk, at least, he scores a moderate success.
Incredible music at an incredible price.......2005-04-13
This is the best addition to my music library I've made in quite some time. Hearing the ethereal Song for Athene sung for Princes Diana's funeral I was mesmerized. It wasn't until our church choir began rehearsing this piece that I learned who had written it. I immediately went to Amazon to find more music by John Tavener. When I saw the price of this recording, I hesitated--perhaps the rest of his music doesn't match the quality of Athene? Why else would the price be so low? Since receiving my order I can only say it is worth far more. Anyone who enjoys the mystical eastern sounds introduced to us in the 60s and 70s will thoroughly enjoy Tavener's marriage of English choral music with the hypnotic droning "ohms" of eastern music.
You will experience mystery and contemplation as you listen. Blake's and Herbert's poetry take on new meaning when set to Tavener's provocative underpinnings. His other pieces further create a sense of wonder, meditation, and awe. To listen is to be drawn to worship. Each piece on the disc adds value to the recording. What a marvelous find.
Top-rate singing at a wonderful price.......2003-01-27
For all the minor "complaints" one could have about this recording, it is still a wonderful, recent recording of beautiful music from one of England's finest traditional choirs. For such a cheap price, it is WELL worth the money!
Tavener's music is perhaps an acquired taste. If modern, "hypnotic" sacred choral music appeals to you, then you would certainly do well to buy this recording, which includes some of Tavener's best works. I personally enjoy the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis best. Everything on here is very well sung -- sometimes truly beautifully so -- by the men and boys of St. John's College Choir.
If you like Tavener, this CD is certainly worthy of your collection. If you are not familiar with Tavener's music, then this is the CD to buy to discover it -- the quality of singing is first-class and the price can't be beaten!
Nothing Special.......2002-07-05
I have liked Tavener since Apple and the Whale.
I came across this in a budget section and gave it a whirl. Actually it has been in my car for three days. Well written, well sung, well orchestrated. Well what?
Well it does not seem to me, although I am no expert, that it sounds pretty much like any other English choral music.
It sounds good but does not sound special.
I like it but it does not raise my soul.

Amazon.com essential recording
Innocence, the longest work here, is the least successful. The bulk of the piece is a catalog of cruelties inflicted by humankind on innocents--mostly children--set to harsh but generally monotonous music. But Patricia Rozario is spectacular in a three-octave solo part, and the ending, with an ethereal chorus and bells depicting the salvation awaiting suffering innocents, is magical. The shorter pieces are deservedly among Tavener's most famous. The gentle, beguiling The Lamb and the powerful Tyger, settings of poems by William Blake, make an ideal pair. (Where The Tyger's text alludes to The Lamb, Tavener quotes The Lamb's music to wonderful effect.) The two hymns to the Mother of God are models of reverent beauty; Song for Athene, made world-famous at Princess Diana's funeral, is spellbinding. --Matthew Westphal
Customer Reviews:
Intense cathedral music.......2000-12-25
Take a creative man who likes William Blake poetry and put him in front of an organ in a cavernous cathedral and give him full reign and see what results you get. Curious? Oh, yes, and light some candles, lots of candles, and pretend you're in the 19th century...maybe at a witch trial or something (did they still have them in the 1800's?). Be warned. Track nmbr 2 you may want to turn down. I had my volume up pretty high on track nmbr 1 and track nmbr 2 came blaring through.... almost broke my speakers. But I liked it....
quality of recording mars Tevener's music.......2000-11-16
This has got to be one of the noisiest recordings in my collection. There is some kind of high frequency hum that is on a number of cuts. My recommendation is to find a different recording.
A triumph for 20th century choral music..........1999-06-11
John Tavener's "Innocence" offers listeners perhaps the broadest insight into the man and his music in the smallest and most convenient package. In this one CD, there is a sample of Tavener's large-scale style (the title work "Innocence" itself) as well as some of his finest smaller pieces (including the much-celebrated "The Lamb" and its less well-known but equally effective sequel, "The Tyger"). For those wishing to sample Tavener's command of the orchestra, there is the original version of his "Little Requiem for Father Malachy Lynch", and there is one track that everyone will be familiar with- "Song for Athene", the final piece of music at Princess Diana's funeral in 1997. It certainly is a varied programme, although certain themes (in particular Death) do crop up rather frequently. The choir seems to be right at home with just about every note and they are beautifully directed by Martin Neary- whose daughter Alice makes a special appearance as solo cellist in "Innocence". Patricia Rozario, the solo soprano (also in "Innocence"), shows here how spectacular contemporary soloists can be, negotiating a massive three-octave range with remarkable ease and purity of tone. As the notes say, it is only a pity in this recording that the theatricality of the piece cannot be conveyed fully- part of the impact of the piece lies in the fact that the solo tenor (representing Redeemed Humanity) is in a high gallery whilst the solo bass (representing Supplicant Humanity) is in a very subservient position "below" the rest of the choir. Other gripes I have about this CD are that whilst "Innocence" and the expansive pieces are perfectly suited to Westminster Abbey's acoustics, more intimate pieces like "The Lamb" are lost in them and it is necessary to crank the volume to make them out- leaving you liable for ear-ache when the next track comes on and the thunderous organ chords rip the sound system to pieces! Also, the booklet notes (although most informative) refer to other works that are unfortunately unavailable ("The Apocalypse" being one of them). However, I can only really praise this recording as some of the best Tavener available- the renditions of "Hymn to the Mother of God" and "Song for Athene" stand out in particular as utterly peerless. Even friends of mine who are usually put off contemporary music have been stopped in their tracks by this wonderful CD.
Listening to Tavener's music is a spiritual experience........1999-03-18
Tavener's music is somber, reverent, serious, and spiritual. If you like Gregorian or other sacred chant music, you will find many of the same spiritual qualities in the music of John Tavener.
A provocative and harsh, yet etherial and emotional disc.......1999-02-18
I also purchased this disc for Song for Athene, which I feel to be one of the most intense, emotional pieces ever written. The rest of the album is thought-provoking and intriguing. Never before have I heard a composer use such an array of colors as in Innocence. Although harsh at times, the beauty of the soprano and the "choir of angels" nicely contrasts the overall darkness. The remainder of the album is listener friendly provided the understanding of Tavener's use of microtones, which at times could sound like poor intonation. Tavener's harmonies are incredible, and the performers do an exquisite job of capturing the listener's attention. To enjoy this disc, I suggest a dark, comfortable, candle-lit room with a high quality audio system. Not necessarily for the classical novice, but an amazing recording nonetheless

Beautiful hippie psychedellic songs under the noise.......2004-12-29
Beautiful hippie psychedellic songs under the noise. At first, the LP may sound like a noisey mess but listen closer... there are some beautiful songs there!! "Unicorn", "Tears By The Pound" and my favorite "Angie Vampyre" are amazing. This lp truly ROCKS! It also has a gospel feel.. Not in the sese of loving the "Lord" but the spirit and energy. There is a HIPPIE feel too that is mixed in with strong psychedellic sounds.

Almost 4 stars.......2007-06-26
The reason why I couldn't quite give this album 4 stars is because of the lyrics. It's not that I have anything against TD using lyrics ("Dancing On a White Moon" from Shy People is a great song!), it's just that since these lyrics are actually taken from the classic poems of William Blake, the words were meant to be spoken, not sung.
Poetry and music can often go hand in hand (Jewel is a great example), but sometimes it just doesn't work, which is the case with Tyger. The lyrics often seem "forced" into the song; like the band was trying SO hard to make it work. The result, unfortunately, just doesn't measure up to what TD was and is capable of. Even the vocalist, Jocelyn Bernadette-Smith reportedly got so fed up with trying to fit the words into the songs that she threw her lyrics sheets on the floor, cursed at Edgar and stormed out of the studio. Yikes!
Now, if one can sort of ignore the words (lyrics, poetry, whatever) and focus on the music itself, the entire recording is really top-notch. Luckily, not every song on this album has lyrics. "21st Century Common Man" is classic '80s Tangerine Dream (and it's all instrumental).
I must point out that there is another version of this album that was released in 1992 that contains a slightly different mix of a couple of songs plus 2 songs that are not on the original 1987 version (21st Century Common Man Part II and Vigour - both excellent songs). If you want the 1992 version, look for the cover artwork that has black borders and a picture of, what else, a tiger on it. The 1987 version has blue and white cover artwork containing the now-famous Tangerine Dream logo (pictured with this review).
Overall, this is a very good TD release that may be a hard pill to swallow for some fans (thus, only 3 stars), but it is definitely worth owning. Another point of interest is that this was the last Tangerine Dream studio album to feature Chris Franke as a member of the band.
Poems By William Blake.......2006-02-14
The Poems of William Blake read by Jocelyn B. Smith to the music of Tangerine Dream. A little different than most of their material because there are lyrics. There are five tracks.1) The Tyger.2) London.3) Alchemy of the Heart.4.)Smile.5) 21st Century Common Man.

Customer Reviews:
Magical.......2005-01-12
I played the Simple Gifts movement 4 for band and fell in love with it. I was surprised when I found out there was 3 more other ones! The other 3 will still as magical and brilliant!! Not only Simple Gifts but Shenendoah is ALSO a great song. That is all the songs i actually heard from this CD. But i have listen to his other compositions and I must.. Wow.. Just wow!!
