About the Artist
Jon Simon divides his time between composing and performing his works for solo piano and serving as a senior executive and consultant to a variety of Internet companies throughout the United States.

Mr. Simon's eighth recording, Shabbatjazz, released on the Silver Lining Records label, features his contemporary piano interpretations of popular melodies from the Jewish Sabbath. Like his other recordings, Mr. Simon celebrates this music with his extraordinary piano technique and improvisational style.

Mr. Simon tours the country performing music from his new recording along with Jewish Broadway and Hollywood favorites featured on his acclaimed From Broadway to Hollywood release. In addition, he delights audiences with his piano arrangements of music from four highly successful recordings of music from the Jewish heritage (new traditions 1 and 2, Hanukkah…and all that jazz, and Zoom Gali Boogie), as well as his original compositions and Beatles interpretations from his highly regarded Beatles on Ivory recording.

Mr. Simon has appeared numerous times at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, Merkin Recital Hall in New York, and at he Concord Resort. He has performed his jazz interpretations of Jewish music at the U.S. Senate and for the Ambassador at the Israeli Embassy, at one of the Inaugural Galas for President Clinton, as well as at concert halls, jazz clubs, synagogues and community centers throughout North America.

Mr. Simon studied music composition with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer William Bolcom at the University of Michigan School of Music. While at Michigan, he was commissioned by the U of M Professional Theater Program to compose, arrange, and direct a musical based on Aristophenes' "The Birds." He has also composed "The Illegitimate Child" for saxophone quartet, published by the World Saxophone Congress. Mr. Simon was voted one of Moment Magazine's Top 10 Jewish Instrumental Performers.

Mr. Simon holds a Masters degree in Business Administration from the Harvard Business School and graduated, summa cum laude, from the University of Michigan, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering. He was born in Rochester, New York in 1955. Mr. Simon lives with his wife and three children in the metropolitan Washington, DC. Area.

My son will be married this June and this song will be played for our mother/son dance. It is absolutely beautiful and just what I was searching for; however, I can't listen to it without crying. For any mother who shares a special bond with her son it is the perfect expression of love. Although there are other songs that have the right words and/or express the right feelings, this song brings special meaning because it is a mother's message to her son on his wedding day.

when my son got married recently we had a real hard time finding a song to play for him and his mothers dance together. When I found this cd I was so excited that someone had wrote a song just for this occasion. I really liked the country version but my wife chose the more traditional version. When it was played it brought alot of tears and a silence to the crowd.

wish I could have heard a clip of this song, I would not have purchased it. Now I'm stuck with it. The words make it sound like "wow, she's finally going to get married", not exactly want I wanted to say! Very disappointing.

To Make her day More Special.......2007-02-19

My youngest youngest (identical twins) is getting married in April. She has anxiety attacks so this preparation has not been easy on either of us. I found this CD and thought it would help make her day even more special since she is one of five daughters. I play it for myself when things get too hectic and it makes me more relaxed. It is a bittersweet thought that enters my head that my baby baby is all grown up. Her other four sisters are going to be in the wedding and her only brother is going to walk her down the aisle. It will be wonderful having all six of them together again. The lyrics are beautiful and when it is played at the reception, I imagine tears will be in other's eyes, too.

I bought this cd for my daughter's wedding. It was to be a surprise for her. We played it at the reception, where the acoustics were terrible and the commotion was high, so she could barely hear it over the cocophony of sounds. WHAT A PITY we didn't play it at the ceremony, right after her father walked her up the aisle, and I stood there with them! It would have been the perfect time & place! (Just before handing the bride over to the bridegroom, while the room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop and everyone's attention was focused on the details. There wouldn't have been a dry eye in the church!! I would highly reccomend it. (esp. the male vocal)

This was so perfect for my daughter's wedding. I, as a single parent, gave my daughter away and played this song before i turned her over to the groom. it was a very sentimental moment and precious. Thanks for the fast delivery also.

Great in so many ways. More, please........2007-07-04

I first saw these kids at Merlefest, where they surprised and amazed a crowd that started small and grew rapidly. They play a novel kind of fusion: very traditional west african Kora music and drumming on the one hand and hypnotic jam rock on the other. It's anchored by solid, thoughtful guitar and drumming. This disc is a fair representation of their live act, in which there wasn't a flat moment, and there was always something to listen to, think about, enjoy. AND you can dance to them; even the silly old stoner noodle dance I found myself doing, for the first time in years. Ideally, you should see them live, with time to let both the folk and jam aspects develop at a more relaxed pace, but this disc won't disappoint. A live double album, though, might be nice, next.

Jamband meets Afropop.......2006-06-20

What do you get when you combine Jamband with Afropop? The answer is Toubab Krewe. The band's debut is surprisingly satisfying. It is surprising considering the lukewarm results from so many similarly minded cross-cultural hybrids. From the African side, there's the Ali Farka Toure style Desert Blues along with indigenous instruments that include a plethora of stringed instruments and drums. On the Jamband side, the music echoes the guitar driven sounds of Ali Baba's Tahini and Lotus. With the absence of singing, the improvisation has to be strong to keep such a ship afloat and it cruises in style. While the ingredients may be familiar, Toubab Krewe cooks up a stew that is pleasantly original and unusually compelling. The band isn't composed of a bunch of neo-hippies who enjoyed drum circles enough to take it up to the next level. These musicians lived in Africa studying the music - "Toubab Krewe" makes this training evident. The band beautifully combines instrumental psychedelia with West African vibrations in a way that simultaneously feels authentic and sounds accessible. The accomplishment is similar to Outback's climactic "Dance the Devil Away." In addition to performing an exhilarating live show, Toubab Krewe's freshman release proves that they can shine in the studio with their inspiring brand of Jamband Afropop.

Purchased this CD to help my 6th grader with an Ancient Egypt social studies presentation. She played this CD in the background and it played well. Good for background music, soothing and melodic.

Ancient music for a modern audience.......2006-02-28

I second all the rave reviews featured above. However, I should add for the record: this CD is sometimes labelled (as mine is) as "IMMORTAL SOUNDS: A Musical Journey Through Ancient Egypt", published through Antenna Audio, Inc., CA. I found the recording at the New Orleans Museum of Art when a large travelling exhibit of Egypitan art and artifacts was on display. The music served as the background for the audio guide (under narration by Jeremy Irons) and was sold in the gift shop with the tour's other goods. I was trying to find info on the CD, and when I couldn't find it under that name, I got redirected to this entry. I thought I'd just clarify! :o)

But yes, indeed - beautiful, serene, and indeed ethereal music!

Bringing to life Ancient Egyptian music.......2003-02-13

Ambient Egypt brings ancient Egyptian music to life.
I would rate this CD as highly as these other ancient Egyptian music reconstructions, Michael Atherton`s Ankh and Ali Jihad Racy`s Ancient Egypt. In my opinion the strengths of this CD are the use of authentic reconstructed instruments which have as Irvine states: "the potential to create new music".

I bought this as a gift for my partner who is big into "ancient Egypt" and the like -- far more as a layperson than as a scholar. He said the music was very relaxing and inspiring for his artistic endeavors though it also helped him get to sleep when he was already tired. The idea to try and recreate the music based on surviving instruments is a great one and avoids some of the serious errors of early archaeologists and scholars who attempted to use the actual instruments. I can't say that it is "accurate" in terms of representing a historical reality, but is a fair job of making music that can help a modern person relate to ancient Egypt. I'd probably use it as a intro to a basic history class on this period.

excellent variety of familiar songs.......2006-02-19

Much prettier versions of the bridal chorus than I've been able to find elsewhere (it doesn't just BANG it out), although I'm still probably not using the bridal chorus. Nice variety (Sleepers Awake is a nice little harp-y flute thing). Trumpet voluntary is otherwise known as The Prince of Denmark's March, FYI. The flute & strings version here is very nice. I also like this version of Mendelsshon's bridal march (from Midsummer Night's Dream).

You'll recongnize pretty much all of these songs, even if you don't recognize the names.

This was a great purchase. It actually sounded like a real orchestra. It was also a good variety of songs. I highly recommend.

Kerala Dream is a very special album of space music, akin to that heard on NPR's "Music From the Hearts of Space". The last cut, "Samadhi", is especially fine and contemplative, with a subtle sitar creating soothing melodies and a calming mood. Some of the songs have flute and bass. This album has a variety of sounds, from environmental sounds from India, to vocals and sounds from the Amazon. This album goes especially well with yoga practice and exercises. This album is a exemplary blend of musical forms from India, environmenatal, and Western styles. I use this album to go to sleep to and I frequently do not remember the last cut since by then, I am fast asleep. Very relaxing album and I highly recommend it to yoga enthusiasts.

If you are looking for music with an Indian flavor, and a sure bet, look no further. This is great music for Yoga practice, or just relaxing. Sample Durga Shakti, and Guru Brahma and you 'll see what I mean. The sounds of Amazonian frogs and birds, the sitar, and awesome vocals make this CD unique, and just a pleasure to listen to.

I have found that Stellamara's music brings me to a very creative, focused state of mind. I alternate between dancing to the CD and just allowing my artwork to flow from my heart and head through to my hands (I work with clay) - Stellamara stimulates the artistic muse within.

I have to admit that, as much as I love this style of music, this album is a bit weak to me. Not nearly as rich as something from Lisa Gerrard or Azam Ali. I put these guys near the bottom of my list for this style, right above Lumin. Still a good listen but there is alot of stuff out there that I would reach for first.

In short, this is beautiful. Moody, medieval, and Middle-Eastern. The music and voices are exotic and they transport me. I enjoy it for listening, mood creation, ambiance making, and relaxing. Yummy.

Fascinating.......2004-06-14

A splendind combination of medieval western european chansons with present-day Balkan folk tunes. An album which is among my favourite neofolk releases, including Dead Can Dance, Vas, Axiom of Choice... I am looking forward to their upcoming release "The Seven Valleys" and searching for a limited edition of "Entrance" album.

Sufi's Rule!.......2006-06-14

I have read the poetic works of Jalaluddin Al Din Rumi for many years now ~ long before the tragedy of 9/11 cast the Islamic culture into such a harsh, uncomplimentary light, (mostly by the western media).

The words of this great teacher, who was known by all his contemporaries as "The Master" are so heartbreakingly beautiful that most of his poems will drive me to tears. I was overjoyed when I found this album, completely by accident on Amazon ~ and was able to hear many of his poetic works and his teachings put into the beautiful, exotic music of this culture. Thank you, Mercan Dede, I cannot wait to hear your other albums!

Funk Music and Sufism.......2001-04-08

The music of Mercan Dede, or with his other name DJ Alan Arkin, is taking us to a travel in the land of Sufism. I was very suprised when I first listened to this album. To find Sufist teachings hidden in a funk/house album, was really a new thing. Mercan Dede, did not only use the background and rythm from Sufi Music but also the teachings. Especially the song "Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi", named after the famous Persian Sufi, is a 5 Star song of the album. Without using words Mercan Dede manages to show that life is a circle. "Walking on the Red Sea", is a good example of how Mercan Dede is succesful in mixing Sufi Rythm with other backgrounds. In my opinion these points helps this album become universal and reach audiences far beyond any other etnic funk album would do.

Beautiful Songs and Music.......2006-11-03

I purchased this album for one song (A Song for My Son). While listening to the album I discovered that the rest of the songs were also really beautiful. The album also encloses the words for the songs, so you can sing along as I did while you dance. "A Song for My Son" is the song that my son and I danced to for the mother son dance at his wedding reception. The words were just what I wanted to say to him and it was a very memorable occasion for us. I wish I had had this song for my oldest sons wedding some 10 years ago. I also thought the songs "A Song for My Daughter", songs for the Bride one from the Dad and the one from the Mom, where excellent. I am going to share this album with other family members that enjoyed the song and have children who will marry soon. If there is a wedding in your future this is a great album for many special events during the reception. Enjoy!!!

Cheesy, schmaltzy, songs that no one has ever heard of..........2006-10-17

I agree with the reviewer who suspects that all the glowing reviews of this CD have been "planted" by the artist's friends and the like. First of all, these songs are just plain bad. The vocals are amateur. Secondly, none of these songs have ever charted, so your wedding guests won't really be able to relate to the songs because they've never heard them before. There are plenty of popular songs that would go over much better in these situations. Sorry, but musically I have to give this CD and others like it a big, fat "F".

After reading about "A Song For My Son" and "A Song For My Daughter" in Good Housekeeping Magazine I wanted to hear these songs for our wedding. It was helpful to know I could hear sound clips and read the words to all the songs at

After I heard the clips and read the words I knew that the songs on this CD would make my wedding day even more special.
I thought I was going to surprise our parents with "A Song For My Son" and " A Song For My Daughter" but they already heard the songs at a few weddings and were thrilled that I got the CD. My mother in law to be broke down and cried when I told her that I had "A Song For My Son". I guess she has always wanted that song for her mother groom dance but didn't know where to get it.
This CD has meaningful songs beautiful music and great singers.
I love it.

THE VERY BEST WEDDING CD.......2006-02-13

I purchased quite a few wedding CDs from amazon to find just the right wedding songs.
I have to say of all the CDs this is the one I love the most.
I have been sharing my research with friends and family and they all agree that the songs on this CD are the best of all.
This CDs has many different singers so that the voices really match the songs. And the music is beautiful too.
I am grateful that I found a wedding CD with words and music that will always remind us of a perfect wedding day.

I wish I had heard the sound clips before purchasing.......2006-01-09

I've purchased a few wedding CDs, since I am doing research for possibily coming out with my own wedding CD, and I wish I had heard the songs before I purchased this. I am a classicaly-trained musician who plays weddings (I play violin) and I also play in orchestras. Don't get me wrong, the songs are OK, but I agree with a previous reviewer who said that the singer sounds like a bad lounge singer. This music is what you might hear at a wedding at a bar or in a movie like "My Cousin Vinny." Not all great wedding music has to be classical (although much of it is), but you should know what you're getting, and with no sound clips, it might not be obvious to the non-musician. It strikes me as funny that almost every review does not list a name, not even a "fake" name, and they almost all say "A music fan." I think this reviewer is the person/people who made the CD, and they are adding their own positive reviews to these listings. However, there are a couple of negative ones thrown in for good measure, so maybe either I'm wrong, or those bad ones are to offset the real ones so they look "real." Am I being a little parnoid? Perhaps, althought this all seems a little fishy. So, BEWARE! There seems to be a LOT this going on in the occasional music section of Amazon, particularly with wedding music. I guess that at least on Amazon, there's nothing you can do about it-you just have to listen to the clips and use your ears, and for this CD there are none.

A Fathers Song was written in response to the many requests from fathers who wanted another song for the groom - but from the fathers point of view. The CD single contains both a vocal and an instrumental version of the song. The vocalist is Ray Allaire who also sings the very popular New Traditions song A Song For My Daughter.

This is a great CD. I was actually suprised to find that not only did the CD have the vocal with music but the second track had the music only. I am sure that it will be joy to my son at his wedding. I had very good service and response from Amazon. I highly recommend this CD to anyone.

This is one of the BEST wedding gifts we could have given our Son on his wedding day!!! Played it at the reception and there wasn't a dry eye in the place.
