Product Description
GENERAL FEATURES: Daydreams and Lullabies A celebration of poetry, song and classical music. The story follows a family from playtime to dreamtime as they journey through the nursery, the park, the streets of Olde London and then off to bed. A rich variety of great classical lullabies, rounds for family singing and traditional English songs as well as pieces from the Leider, Romantic Opera and Classical Orchestral traditions are featured. Excerpts from Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, Schubert, Pachelbel and Tchaikovsky are woven into a colorful musical collage with classic poetry from three centuries - William Blake (1700s), Eugene Fields (1800s) and Dennis Lee (1900s) - with poems written and performed by today's children. Educational entertainment for all ages.

Heavenly Music.......2007-01-04
This music will take you and your little ones to places of adventure and imagination as you "rock in the wooden shoe" along with Winken, Blinken, and Nod. Truly incomparable. I lost my first copy in a move and this was the first thing I purchased once I was settled. Even adults will appreciate this classical style.
Makes me happy every time I hear it.......2001-12-10
One of my all-time favorite CD's, ever, of any genre of music. It's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. It's difficult to decribe the effect it has, but of course I have to try. It induces a feeling of peace, well-being, elation. The spirit soars, the ear rejoices. I could listen to it over and over and over -- and have. It never gets stale. One of my favorite times to listen to it is on a long, night drive home as the kids fall asleep in the backseat. I bought this for them, and they love it, too. I can't know if it brings them as much joy as it brings me, but I hope so.
Soothing, Comforting.......2001-02-20
I love this. It's actually a little slice of my happiest, most peaceful childhood moments. It's soothing, comforting and one of my favorite CDs.
Heaven on earth--.......1999-12-12
The best CD I have ever heard. We received it as a gift a few years ago. It consistently brings tears to the eyes and joy to the heart. This should be a perennial best seller. I believe the only reason it isn't is because people don't know about it. It is classical music, with trained and sensitive voices. Think of Winken, Blinken and Nod, Dona Nobis Pachem, and more and more, done to perfection. There are not enough superlatives. This is a gift that will be remembered long hence.
magical and beautiful; lovely beyond words.......1999-04-24
impossible to describe -- bits of classical music, children's rhymes, choir songs, and lullabies all performed as if by the most accomplished symphony on earth. heard it on an npr station while away, and bought it months later, that's how haunting it was. great for any age -- newborn to 100

The title of pianist and composer Kevin Kern's third album is an apt one, for the opening notes of "Le Jardin," the first track on Summer Daydreams, would not be out of place accompanying the opening credits of a Merchant-Ivory film. Not that this is a bad thing. Kern's music has a kind of sensitive grace and his arrangements allow plenty of room for violin (Jeremy Cohen), cello (Thalia Moore), Luis Baez (clarinet), and Bob Ward (French horn). Much of the music on Summer Daydreams is in this vein: slow, sweet, and soothing. There are a few more adventurous exceptions, notably "Pan's Return" (the opening of which rather reminds one of the beginning of the movie Braveheart) and "Dance of the Dragonfly," a lilting piano piece that is the most evocative on the recording. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
I love this album.......2003-04-25
Just received it yesterday and find it so soothing and mellow. It goes well with a good book, cup of tea and a fireplace. Thank you Kevin Kern!
Perfect for all seasons, not just Summer.......2001-08-09
This is undoubtedly the most beautiful instrumental album I have ever heard. Being a clarinetist, the first time I heard "Return to Love", I was stunned by Luis Baez's virtuosity. His tone is fabulous, and I am in awe every time I hear it. "Pan's Return" is also a favorite and gave me a whole new respect for the French Horn. I play this CD almost every night when I go to sleep -- it is so relaxing. This and "In the Enchanted Garden" are two of my favorite CD's by Kevin Kern. Highly recommended!
Beautiful music.......2000-09-22
I have enjoyed Jim Brickman's piano music for some time and thought I would try one of Kevin Kern's. It is truly beautiful music. Uplifting and soothing at the same time. I find it hard to stop listening to this CD over and over again. I certainly plan to purchase other CD's by Kevin.
Inspired me to ask her.......2000-05-26
I listened to what turned out to be track 5 of this album on United Airlines. Kern and his ensemble carried me through the skies on weekly trips to San Francisco from Omaha for 6 months. This single track inspired me to ask her to get married! Let me tell you that I listen to all the great jazz and new age music currently available and this is the number one album. Every track is a "track 5". You'll be getting married shortly after you purchase this album. If you could only listen to one album, it would either be Bach's Goldberg Variations (the late Gould recording) or SUMMER DAYDREAMS. I am initiating coverage with STRONG BUY!
from Wind and Wire, Issue 9.......2000-01-27
Pianist Kevin Kern has released another gem! More classically-influenced than his previous two releases (or is it just all of the strings?), "Summer Daydreams" is soft, gentle, and sunny throughout. There are no rough or jagged edges, and a wistful, dreamy mood is sustained from start to finish - perfect for a lazy afternoon stretched out in a patch of sunshine or a cozy evening by the fireplace. The album features Kern on piano and synth, Jeremy Cohen on violin, Thalia Moore on cello, Luis Baez on clarinet, and Bob Ward on French horn. Most of the tracks are ensemble pieces with one or more of these artists, and the results are lovely. There are no pianistic pyrotechnics here, but there is an abundance of warmth and sincerity to soothe the mind and calm the spirit. "Pan's Return" is one of my favorite cuts - it is primarily piano, but contains several passages that are duets with French horn - a combination you don't find too often! "Pastel Reflections" is also especially nice with piano accompanied by soft washes of strings. "Whisperings" and the title cut remind me of some of the standards of the 30's and `40's, and "Dance of the Dragonfly" hints of Liz Story's earlier work. "Return to Love" is a bittersweet ballad for piano and clarinet that could easily become a romantic movie theme. Uncluttered and uncomplicated, this is sweet, straight-forward music for relaxing and enjoyment - a light-hearted antidote for the holiday craziness!

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12
This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

This is the best album I own. I love it!! I've made gifts of it to all my friends. They love it. I keep trying to find more of Tim Gorman's work. Where are you Tim Gorman? Please do more albums.
Lorna from Oregon.......2002-04-24
This is one of the best albums I've ever heard. All my friends are crazy about it. I've given it as gifts. Why hasn't Tim Gorman done more? This is the only album I can find that he did. I love his music.
Wonderful........2000-06-13
This is a particularly beautifully arranged collection of classical favorites. It is very relaxing and soothing, but also quite moving. I bought a copy of it to listen to as background music at work. Since that time I have bought five more copies to give to friends, because everyone who hears it just has to have it. The arrangement of Debussy's Clair de Lune, in particular, is very moving. It brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it.
mesmerizing.......1999-09-14
This is a soothing album to play in the background to help concentration or to just relax.
Ultimate relaxation and meditation music.......1999-02-13
I am ordering 2 more copies for my collection. This is my all time favorite for relaxation and meditation. If I am having a bad day, I will put this on when I climb into the hot tub and drift away. I also use this for when I am happy and want to reflect. The 2 copies are for me so that I can have a backup at home and also a copy for work to help me to concentrate at work. I can honestly say this is the most beautiful CD I have ever heard.

Easy Listening Can Be Artistically Valid.......2005-10-12
You can take this from a guy who usually has nothing to do with the cheesy, faceless, mass-produced schlock one finds at gift shop listening stations. In fact, my usual taste is rock, prog and jazz. Ahh, but this "easy listening" is another story.
Synchestra is really a handle used by the multi-talented Ed Van Fleet, a self-produced, self published musician who also sells his recordings under his own name. The Synchestra albums are his earlier works, the psydonym taken from the name of his original studio in Phoenix, Arizona. (He has since moved his studio, and company, Elfin Music, twice-- first to Maine, then Florida.)
It is these earlier works, starting with the brilliant "Mother Earth's Lullabye", which broke him through to a small, yet dedicated, audience who have snapped up thousands of copies of his recordings from listening stations (actually invented by Van Fleet) and catalogue orders from all over the United States. The things that set these recordings apart from other "easy listening" was the complex and lengthy arrangements (averaging about 20 minutes a song, with only two songs per album!), which also lent to their being pegged as a new genre, "progressive easy-listening."
And, indeed, if Yes were not rockers, this would likely be what they'd sound like.
"Daydreams" is the fourth of Van Fleet's output, and actually overshadows it's predicessors. More warmth than the all electronic "Silver Ships" and more effective use of guitars AND synths than "Mother Earth's Lullabye", it is full of depth and works extremely well as background music or carefull listening. The album is also the first to feature more than two tracks, it's title cut being a cycle of three songs, each with their own track designation. The second cut, "Journey of the Spirit", is mellow, yet very progressive, and even features some brilliant electric guitar soloing. Van Fleet really is a virtuoso on both strings and keyboards.
The jacket art was well chosen, a thought-provoking and familiar Antonio Peticov painting. The album as a whole is flawless-- this is music which will take you far away to escape from life's stress and strain, and is one of the strongest in Van Fleet's back catalogue.
And this from a rock/prog snob. That alone is recommendation enough.

Tchaikovsky's First Symphony has earned the nickname Winter Dreams from a first movement that the composer claimed describes "dreams of a winter journey." It's an amazingly accomplished work when you consider that it predates such works as Brahms' First. In fact, among the great composers of the late 19th century, only Dvorák began writing symphonies earlier. If you're looking for a separate performance of this lovely piece (most of the others come in sets with Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3), this is the disc to get. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Nothing Special.......2000-04-20
I am a huge fan of Mariss Jansons. Especially because I live in Pittsburgh, and he is the conductor of the PSO. However I was dissapointed with this performance of the Tchaikovsky #1. The First and last movement in particular. I am comparing this to the incredible Slatkin performance. In the first movement, Jansons fails to create winter atmosphere that is so characteristic of the first movement. In the last movement he sounds too reserved, and you long for a more loud, triumphant finale. On top of that, as is the case with all of the Jansons/Tchikovsky Symphonies, the sound quality is somewhat lacking. The strings are lacking in bass and midrange. Really, the Slatkin performanceis so unreal, it actually makes you think its winter, even in June.
Winter Daydreams...an apt subtitle!.......2000-03-24
Recorded in April 1985, this is one of the best performances of the symphony on record. One of Mariss Jansons's strengths as a conductor is to create a sense of atmosphere, and he comes up trumps in every movement. There is excitement and a sense of motion here, but also a sense of dreaminess, particularly in the second movement. The recording, while reverberant, nonetheless assists Jansons and the OPO in giving the second movement an almost wistful atmosphere! The scherzo is perfectly paced, and the finale has just the right amount of excitement without sounding like a football band! Highly recommended, this recording still rates highly despite the passage of 15 years!
