5 out of 5 stars Music for Meditation.......2007-01-04

This is a delightful collection of music appropriate to meditative prayer. It is often my prayer companion, and I like the style and performance found on this CD. I highly recommend it to people who enjoy deeper reflection with a wordless musical background.

4 out of 5 stars Be Thou My Vision.......2005-10-19

Track 3, Be Thou My Vision, was a surprise as the song was the final song played at my father's funeral. It set the closing mood most fittingly. While Be Thou My Vision is my favorite the entire collection is wonderfully mellow. I recommend it for for the mellow moods.

4 out of 5 stars Reverent, beautiful.......2003-09-21

After criticizing Windham Hill in the past for often recycling the same songs over and over in various collections, I have to hand it to them with the new "Prayer" CD. It's a fine set of all-new acoustic versions of hymns or spiritual songs, plus a good number of original compositions. Producer Dawn Atkinson has done an excellent job of lining up a bunch of top-drawer people for "Prayer," and in working with the artists on the song selection.

Things get started with Tim Story's lovely piano rendition of the "Sanctus" from Faure's Requiem. The quiet and reflective tone of that piece carries throughout the CD. Other highlights include Paul McCandless's moving "Lord's Prayer" version and Steve Erquiaga's "Ave Maria." "Prayer" is a perfect disc for background listening if you're engaged in some activity that needs harmonious yet unobtrusive accompaniment.

Thanksgiving generally is a pleasant and likeable affair. Its features include a charming, gently propulsive take on the traditional piece "Allelujah" by Celtic harpist Lisa Lynne; a delicate rendering of "Amazing Grace" by John Doan on a 20-string harp guitar; and a church-ready version of "We Gather Together" by a trio of Paul McCandless (oboe), Philip Aaberg (piano), and Michael Manring (bass). A midalbum three-song stretch, though--from the heavy stringing (cello, violin, guitar) of William Coulter and Barry Phillips to R. Carlos Nakai's flute soliloquy to a saxophone meditation by Paul Winter--lingers overly long in a melancholy state. Later, a thoughtful harmonica outing by former Lovin' Spoonful member John Sebastian aims for Americana yet delivers more spaghetti Western. Still, the album ends with pieces by Will Ackerman and George Winston--and what could be more classic than that? --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars One of the best-listen to this Year-Round and experience the Joy of Thankfulness..........2006-02-17

Simply one of the best & most original of the Windham Hill compilations, and I'm very glad Windham Hill thought to release this one. Just as close to perfect as they come, and the only way it could have been any better was to have had a contribution by the always original arrangements & compositions of Barbara Higbee, (or Fred Simon) but perhaps they were not available at the time. Of course, in a compilation like this, you need to have "We Gather Together Together..." but it is particularly touching to hear veteran Paul McCandless' arrangement to open the disc and set a thankful & comforting tone. Tim Story's consistently original & moving here as always, and the true highlight for me is "Amazing Grace" by John Doan. It is "amazing" indeed to hear someone do an original take on this classic hymn which has been recorded by so many, many fine artists over but the many decades of music-recording history. Leave it to Doan and to Dawn Atkinson's masterful production experience & background to pull this off so well. Will Ackerman's "The Gathering" is a typically original piece, very listenable year-round, and Carlos Nakai is a welcome addition with a peaceful cedar flute offering. Finally, (and really, there are so many gems here...) Lisa Lynne adds a sort of Majestic Joyfulness to "Allelujah", which certainly blows the dust off of this great hymn tune, bringing new life to such an often heard melody. Like the very best of the "Solstice" collections, this is a perfectly appropriate collection to hear year round. For example, I have listened to it on Independence Day, and found it strangely perfect for refection on our American roots that gave birth to many of these hymns, and to the spirit of creativity that our Founding Parents passed on to us in America. Simply perfect, Windham.

5 out of 5 stars A Sentimental Reflection.......2005-11-06

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on friends, family, and blessings. At this time of year, we celebrate our families, we think of those who are less fortunate, and we reflect on the solemnity of the season and what it means to be truly thankful.

"Thanksgiving" is a compilation of that reflection in music. It celebrates the gathering together of those whom we hold dear, the solemnity and courage of the human psyche, the spirituality of the human soul, and the season when everything must change.

The CD progresses through a series of reflections, from "We Gather Together," a traditional hymn that emphasizes the gathering of friends and family, to George Winston's "Thanksgiving," moving through all the emotions of the Thanksgiving season with feelings of humility, prayer, blessedness and thankfulness.

A mood piece throughout, "Thanksgiving" will help you take your own personal journey of introspection, inspiration, peace and spirituality.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT.......2004-04-12

For most of us, Thanksgiving confronts us with a variety of emotions. Gratefulness should be the primary one; unfortunately getting stressed out and bent out of shape can overtake all the best intentions. Everything from complicated and hurried preparations to being cooped up with unpleasant relatives can ruin the occasion. Some of us endure Thanksgiving alone or practically alone in that those dearest are far away. For a holiday that can mean so much, a lot can go wrong.

In its own small way, this CD reminds us what its all about. The selections generally are soft and soothing as well as gently uplifting. There is nary a vocal to be heard-a plus when you need to get away from all the chatter. The artists are from Windham Hill's diverse stable and no one dominates the proceedings.

No attempt is made to hide the reality of Thanksgiving being primarily of Christian origin as sometimes happens in these affairs. But at the same time no one would mistake this CD for a contemporary Christian recording. The viewpoint encompasses not only giving thanks but memory and returning home as well. Hence, many of the pieces are colored with a hint of sadness.

If you are looking for music to "cut the rug" with this is not it. But if you are looking for music which prompts reflection and joy, this one is the one to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Alone in the kitchen basting the turkey..........2001-11-22

I have many Windham Hill albums, but this one is an all time favorite. Songs are relaxing and reflective, and I start playing it when the leaves turn colors and evenings become cool. I remember holiday seasons past, and look forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas whenever I hear these beautiful melodies. I actually heard this album for the first time during a massage session, so that gives you a hint as to how soothing this music is!

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Serene and Moving Music for Anytime!.......2000-04-04

Thanksgiving is a wonderful blend of different Windham Hill artists, which of course display a wide variety of instruments....piano, violin, flute, cello, oboe, fiddle, and a variety of stringed instruments. This certainly would be an asset to a Thanksgiving Day celebration, but I also enjoy it throughout the entire year. It's beautiful, meditative and serene. I especially like the very moving, sentimental Eileen Ivers, "Bygone Days," the beautiful rendition of John Doan's "Amazing Grace," and what a treat to end the cd with Will Ackerman's "The Gathering," and George Winston's "Thanksgiving." What more can be said! This collection opens the gamut of a wide variety of emotions, which is what I expect when listening to music.....an emotionally provoking experience. (Sometimes, that doesn't happen with certain artists) I highly recommend this cd and think it would make a wonderful gift for any music lover.....yourself, a relative or a friend. Even if you only enjoyed half of the songs in this collection, I still think it would be worth the purchase, but I'll go as far to say that I don't believe that would happen. I think you'd truly enjoy the entire bit. It's a nice break from the hustle and bustle of life. Picture yourself....a cup of steaming hot tea or coffee, kicked back in your most favorite chair, and listening to "Thanksgiving....." I hear it now.

some of this suites my needs. It's much more lyrical than some of their albums.

4 out of 5 stars remix? or just a collection of quieter tracks?.......2005-10-20

remix? or just a collection of quieter tracks?
there is very little that would be different from just copying thse tracks from their orig cds and putting them together on one disc.
i am a long-time aon fan, so i thought i would give it a try. it is nice, but the "remix" aspect should not be pushed as a selling point.

if you don't have these aon albums, look over the other reviews and if you are intrigued, give it a spin: aon can do ambient as well as outrageous.

5 out of 5 stars One of my Favourites.......2005-06-28

The second phase of Art of Noise ( everything after the album "Who's Afraid of the Art of Noise?" ) did not thrill me at all. The novelty duets and cover versions ( Tom Jones, Maxx Headroom, Duane Eddy, etc ) to me just ruined a formerly great artistic collective. Having said that, this ambient mix collection of some of Art of Noise's second phase material is one I cannot live without. I play it at night to relax, in the morning for something less abrasive, or after clubbing to chill out. All praise must go obviously to Youth, the mixing producer, and his DJ partner on this particular project, Alex Patterson of the Orb. They give life and wonder and a sense of astonishment to what had none of these things before. Five stars, gentlemen. Very well done.

5 out of 5 stars A modern classic.......2004-09-28

My single favourite CD ever. Wow, I never thought I'd say that, but it's true.
This is a collection of the most beautiful music and immersive atmosphere. Very relaxing. Not for partying.
Put it on, kick off your shoes and close your eyes ... you will be transported to wondrous musical spaces.

It's so pleasant - kinda like a mental massage.

Recommend it? heck... I'd buy it for you if I could!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music! Innovative! .......2004-09-22

Very good CD, even though it did take me a long time to finally listen to the CD in it's intirety(did I spell that right?)

It is definately mood music, but don't let that scare you, groovey, sexy, funky even dance, all tracks are very easy on the ears.

I beleive you won't be dissapointed.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars great songs, inferior set list.......2006-10-13

Ask any Cocteau Twin to choose 18 songs for a compilation, and you're likely to get a different response each time. Still, Stars and Topsoil leaves out too many first-rate songs to be considered truly representative collection.

Let's start with track one. Why was Blind Dumb Deaf chosen to represent the Garlands album, and not Wax and Wane? Scanning though the rest of the list, I picked up on some glaring omissions, including From the Flagstones, Crushed, and Oomingmak.

Furthermore, a proper collection would have encompassed the whole of their catalogue, not just up to 1990. Bluebeard, anyone?

Sorry to say it, but I think this compilation, not being a true "best-of", is a waste of money for all but those completely unfamiliar with the Twins' music.

5 out of 5 stars Escape to a beautiful place.......2005-09-25

I cant say anything bad about Elizabeth Fraser. Her voice makes me melt and she takes me where I want to go.The guitarists Will and Robin work in perfect harmony with liz providing a perfect sureal soundscape. Pure bliss.

5 out of 5 stars "Pink Orange Red" worth the price alone.......2005-08-15

I'll be brief - The Cocteau Twins have made some of the most heavenly, lush, etheral, otherworldly music I've ever heard. The atmospheres they create are so palpable you can almost step into them. For years, my personal favorite CT song was "Pink Orange Red," originally on the TINY DYNAMINE ep. Alas, I became permanently seperated from my old vinyl collection from the 80s (long story) and couldn't get this song for ages. So when STARS AND TOPSOIL came out and I saw "Pink Orange Red" on it, I snatched it up in a heartbeat.

I would agree that this is not a "best-of" collection, but nearly every song here is fantastic. Actually, it does include my least favorite CT song "Sugar Hiccup," but I'm the only one that seems to be mildly annoyed with this track so no matter. Undenyably, STARS does include some of CT's best music, like "Aikea-Guinea."

This is a fine place to start for newbes although just about anywhere will work since most of their music is wonderful. My first CT was THE PINK OPAQUE which actually is somewhat of a "best of" collection. Maybe the best album to pick up first would be TREASURE or their debut GARLANDS which is a bit heavier, darker and gothic compared to some of their later works which focus more on beauty. Some of the last few albums they released like HEAVEN OR LAS VEGAS are a bit more slick and digestable, but still great.

5 out of 5 stars The 44th greatest Scottish band of all time..........2005-05-17

...according to List Magazine, that is. This collection proves that the Cocteau Twins should rank somewhat higher, say, 26th, right behind Nazareth. Seriously, though, no matter how often I listen to it, I can't figure out how the band came up with their song structures, their arrangements, their sound. Multilayered, ethereal, dreamy--their music is unlike anything that came before it to my knowledge. I really have no idea who their influences might have been. Perhaps this quality is why their work has aged so well. Or maybe because Elizabeth Fraser is a brilliant vocal artist, unlike any other in pop. For those who already love the Cocteau Twins, this CD may be interesting for the remastered versions. The liner notes are weak, though. For those unfamiliar with the band, this is a fine place to start.

5 out of 5 stars An enchanting album.......2004-12-01

I am not really familiar with The Cocteau Twins music except for their enchanting album "Treasure" and now "Stars and Topsoil: a Collection (1982-1990)". I bought "Treasure" last year on a whim. I had always wanted to check out their music. I had heard a song or two by the Scottish trio over the years but I couldn't remember them. I liked what I heard and thought they were worth looking into. I immediately fell under Elizabeth Frasier's haunting vocals. She has one of the most incredible voices in pop music. No one really sings like her. Her voice can be fragile yet powerful at the same time. Robin Guthrie's shimmering guitar riffs complements Elizabeth's delicate vocals. Listening to The Cocteau Twins' music is such a joy to listen to. I especially love the addictive "Sugar Hiccup" which is simply irresistably infectious and the swirling sounds of "Pearly-Dewdrops' Drops". I am also a big fan of "Lorelei" and "Pandora" too. I thought "Stars and Topsoil" is a great introduction to newer listeners like myself and gives me a broad idea of the band's music. I loved all the songs. As I listened to the cd, I could hear their influence on bands like Black Tape For a Blue Girl and Lycia iwth their haunting, ethereal pop melodies. I defintely plan on picking up the band's other remastered albums in the near future

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-08-19

I like the music, but the sound quality is terrible. I bought this CD because it was released in 2003, but there is ZERO improvement in sound quality from previous older tracks.

2 out of 5 stars Enough with the damn compilations!.......2005-06-11

First of all I like Vangelis very much. However I have had it with the way that his music is being released. We are consistently given compilation releases (usually of the same tracks that are on other releases). WHAT IS THE POINT????!!
All the more frustrating is that Vangelis has a ton of unreleased music that many fans like myself have been after for years. Sorry the bootlegs on Ebay just don't cut it.
Where's an official release of "Cavafy", "The Bounty", "Francesco", and "Bitter Moon". Where is all the still unreleased music from "1492", "Blade Runner", "Antarctica" and "Chariots of fire", yes he released soundtracks for these films but they were sadly lacking.
Unfortunately we will probably have to wait for Vangelis to demise before we ever get these tracks, if even then.

4 out of 5 stars worth buying, has seven good Vangelis songs.......2005-05-25

Some may complain that this is not a definitive Vangelis CD. Nope, it is far from being that, but it has seven good songs on it that make it worth purchasing for less than $20. Those seven good songs are: Hymne, Alpha, Chariots of Fire, Missing, Pulsar, Petite Fille de la Mer, and L'enfant. Of course, those are just my personal favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of Vangelis' Best Known Songs.......2004-06-10

It's hard to keep track of the number of compilations of Vangelis. Off the top of my head, I can think of "The Best of", "Greatest Hits", "Themes", "Portraits", and "Reprise". But they never got it right, something was always off, or one period or another of his career was not covered. Now comes "Oddisey: The Definitive Collection". While it may be pushing your luck to proclaim anything as a Vangelis "definitive" compilation", given his prolific output over the years, I am here nevertheless to tell you that this compilation is as good as it will get.

"Oddisey: The Definitive Collection" (18 tracks, 78 min.) in my opinion truly does compile all of Vangelis' best know tracks and greatest hits. Most of the tracks on here will sound immediately familiar, many because they are movie themes (Chariots of Fire being the most famous of course, but also The Missing, Blade Runner, thankfully containing both the beginning and end titles, Mutiny on the Bounty, and others), and other that became well known in commercials (Hymne, L'Enfant, among others). There can be no denying the creativity and talents of Vangelis. There are 2 bonus tracks, "I'll Find My Way Home" and "State of Independence", the 2 best known tracks of Jon & Vangelis, a nice touch to the album.

I share my frustration with other reviewers here that there is tons of great Vangelis music out there that remains unreleased. To be sure, Vangelis deserves a box-treatment of rare and unreleased tracks. But if you are looking for a single-disk overview of his best known songs, look no further: "Oddisey" is it. Released in Fall, 2003, it is a nice way to commemorate Vangelis turning 60 (say it ain't so!).

Vancouver techno-pop enterprise Delerium may be most widely known for getting Sarah McLachlan played in dance clubs; the famed songstress lent her vocals to their 1997 hit "Silence." DJ Tiesto's familiar dance-floor overhaul of the tune sets the pace for the double-disc compilation Odyssey, on which a procession of remix artists chop tracks from Delerium albums Semantic Spaces (1994), Karma (1997), and Poem (2000) into lengthy workouts. The selections favor straight-up disco and house over the sort of ambient experimentation that might have been culled from the original material. But the dub-styled "Flowers Become Screens (Return Mix)" and--on the spacier second disc--a goth-tinged take on "Silence (Fade's Sanctuary Mix)" offer a breather from the collection's rather athletic nature. Besides a clutch of previously released tracks, Odyssey also includes rare mixes of "Underwater," "Euphoria (Rabbit in the Moon's Divine Gothic Disco Mix)," and "Heaven's Earth (Matt Darey Remix)." And Delerium's trademark ethereal guest vocal tracks remain largely intact, so you can float and dance at the same time. --Kieran Grant

3 out of 5 stars Didn't care for it too much.......2007-06-14

Seems like they were just trying to make an extra buck by releasing versions that weren't included on the other CD.

5 out of 5 stars Superb. .......2007-05-04

Prior to this album I had never heard of Delerium. This album totally won me over though and now I love Delerium. This is Trance at its BEST. Even though there are multiple remixes of some of the same songs they sound completely different. I personally prefer a lot of the remixes on this album over some of the originals. The music is very fluid, constantly evolving and ever changing, it doesn't stay the same for long. If you like trance and electronica at all...this is the album for you.

I love this album. It's one of my favorite albums EVER.

5 out of 5 stars Check it Out .......2007-04-30

The remix collection is great especially if your checking the group out or if your a fan already. Fantastic. All their releases from Sematic Spaces to Odyssey - The Remix Collection, Best of and the newest, I'll refer to it as NAGS DE' MORE, not the actual title but apropiate as dance fans and all their fans have speculated about the condition of Leebs & Fulber since Chimera. Practically everyone who as assisted with the vocals ect., is on this album. Leigh Nash, Sarah McLachlin, Kristy Thrisk, The Mediaevel Babes, On and On and On. I Misspelled Sarah's, name but you'll get it down pat with this CD, only wish older albums morpheus, stone tower, faces, forms & illusions were this good (with the vocalists I mean), the albums would still be in print and worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Odyssey-The Remix Collection.......2007-03-23

This is a must have if you like the Trance version of the song Silence by Delerium.

5 out of 5 stars Delerium.......2007-01-10

I really like the remixes on this album. Although not one of the best Delerium releases, still a good album.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful and Suits the Book.......2007-01-27

I've been loving the books of the same name, so bought this album and have really enjoyed it; Windham Hill does it well here with a very nice and gentle collection of pieces. This a worthy compilation that I recommend.

5 out of 5 stars What's Your Favorite Selection?.......2003-11-19

This CD was originally created to go along with Neale Donald Walsch's book by the same name. Whether or not you read or agree with the book is completely up to the individual listener. The CD speaks for itself, and it does so eloquently. It is a compilation of New Age music crafted into a CD that creates a soothing, relaxation enhancing back drop. And the appeal isn't limited to New Age fans. My grandparents use this CD for background during their bridge parties and book club meetings. My best friend puts it on at night for her newborn baby. Even my New Age hostile mother never argues when I slip this CD on the player.

Out of the fifteen tracks on this disc, there isn't one that should be discarded. Her Knees Deep In Your Mind by Ray Lynch is the first selection on this CD. It's unsurprising that some listeners have bought the collection after sampling that song alone. If you can, check out the audio sample available here. Other artists on this album include Jim Brickman, David Arkenstone, Yanni and George Winston, to name just a few. If nothing else, this CD offers the New Age listener a feast of styles, instruments and artistry to sample. I've discovered everyone has their favorites. Some love the piano performance of If You Believe by Jim Brickman. Others are drawn to the more esoteric works, like Shadowfax's Angel's Flight.

Compilations are an excellent way to explore new artists without committing to an entire album by said artist. This particular compilation has made a wonderful gift for many friends and family. The title is slightly misleading. While the compilation was put together by the author of the book by that same title, there is no necessity to read or subscribe to the ideas in the text to enjoy the CD. Most, if not all these chosen pieces were first recorded well before this book was ever written. This is excellent background music, or meditation music. I don't recommend the second or third CD compilations created under the same title, as I found the music choices less inspiring or interesting.

Happy listening! ^_^ Shanshad

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully compiled.......2003-05-03

I love the music of Windham Hill, and this disc is no exception! Compiled from 14 different artists, each and every track is incredibly beautiful. The White Spirit (track #13) by Uman is evocative and Reflection (track # 6) by Oystein Sevag is just one of those songs that transports you.

I have a disc for my car, which just sets the tone for the day!

The music is varied, including such artists as David Arkenstone, George Winston, and Patrick O'Hearn to name a few.

The music is soothing, yet evocative at times and can transport you to the depths of your soul if you let it carry you away. Great compliation - just another great winner from Windham Hill!

5 out of 5 stars Conversations With God/A Must-Have CD.......2001-03-11

When I first heard a track of this CD, I didn't know the CD's title nor even the exact music genre. Yet, I knew one thing after hearing only one track. I had to purchase it.

I tracked down the name of the CD and bought it immediately. So, I was braced and prepared to be disappointed because I hadn't listened to the entire CD before purchasing it. What a wonderful and uplifting surprise to find myself absolutely mesmerized and seduced by every single track of this excellent CD.

It would be misleading if I said the CD gets progressively better beginning with Track 1 because every single track will offer you something extraordinary. (Track 13 is the grabber for me.) The power of this music is masked by its ethereal qualities, but powerful it is. After sharing this music with so many of my relatives, friends and co-workers, I'm convinced that this music can only be explained by whatever defines you. It will reach, touch and soothe anyone's core.

I purchased a second copy of this CD for my car. I'm a big music lover but I've never done that before. It's the best musical decision I've ever made.

5 out of 5 stars Must have !.......2000-01-20

I first heard this album from a friend and I tell you, it's an absolute must have. The music is so soothing it allows you to get in touch with your inner self. If you listen under the right circumstances you could even get into a sleepy state that puts you in touch with your subconscious self. Fantastic! Highly recommended!

This 60-minute, 16-track compilation is the second installment in what has proven to be another successful concept generated by New Age-music specialists. In this case, bestselling author Neale Donald Walsh and Windham Hill have branded a pair of label compilation projects with the evocative title from Walsh's popular series of books. This assortment of preexisting music, which includes several splendid moments, nevertheless conveys a certain patchwork quality that impacts the intended mood of seamlessness inherent in the genre's best thematic samplers. The album's opener, "Remembrance," comes from George Winston's ode to Vince Guaraldi and introduces the project with an urban texture. The passionate vocal style of Patti Cathcart (of Tuck & Patti) and country-tinged voice of Cathy Bolton (who closes the album with "Amazing Grace") at times seem a bit intrusive within the album's generally contemplative mood. Still, gems like Will Ackerman's dynamic, violin-powered "Driving," Michael Manring's inventive "Welcoming," and Jim Brickman's piano solo "Dream Come True" succeed beautifully at fulfilling the album's premise. An attractive package. --Terry Wood

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable mixture.......2003-05-03

I was a tad bit disappointed in this disc, after hearing disc 1. If the premise was to correlate with the CWG books, I would expect very little vocal and more instrumental. I did not like the vocals on this disc and really felt that it detracted from the rest of the disc. I wanted to be relaxed, in a meditative state and the vocals seemed to distract from that ambiant mood. I felt that the vocal tracks really had nothing at all to do with the tone of the disc.

This is not a disc to relax to, but rather, to enjoy the wonderful music of the various artists of Windham Hill.

Since the CWG books stand alone, I would expect more of a meditative, contemplative disc, as one found with disc 1. The very few vocals on disc 1 were subtle and blended perfectly with the intrumental moods. But disc 2 is more distracting to me and I felt that the disc could do without the vocals or they could have been as subtle in the first disc.

The song REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE by Cathy Bolton is just beautiful I would like more of her music but am unable to find it.Can you help? Does she have her own album? The songs by Jim Brickman are very good as well as those by George Winston but many of the other artists I do not care for.

Amazon.com essential recording

A two-CD set of Khan's most serious and intense performances; the apex of the genius singer's marriage of Sufi devotional poetry and Pakistani classical music. Trancelike tabla rhythms, aching harmonium lines, and Khan's indescribable virtuosity grace each extended piece. The excellent, thoughtful liner notes by the late acclaimed rock singer Jeff Buckley say it best: "Part Buddha, part demon, part mad angel, his voice is velvet fire, simply incomparable. Nusrat's blending of classical improvisations to the art of Qawwali, combined with his out-and-out daredevil style and his sensitivity, puts him in a category all his own." Probably the best place to start your Nusrat collection: what, you haven't started yet? --James Rotondi

5 out of 5 stars Memorable.......2004-04-27

This cd set will probably be still played over a millenium or so.
This is the best music ever.
The only musicparty that had it all.
1.A great leader.
2.Great backup.
3.Exellent rhytm.
4.Superb lyrics.
5.And above all Nusrats voice simply incomparable.
This will never be equalled.

Remember them, they did not play music they were music itself.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2003-01-17

I am just blown away by this. This is the first NFA Khan
music I've listened to, but I want more. Its taken me a couple
of weeks to get into it, but now I can't stop listening.
Over a steady rythmic base of clapping and instruments Nusrat
lets his incredible vocal talents pour it all out.
The gravity and the wildness! There is a nice framework to
the music, but so much subtlety and variety over it,
absolutely brilliant, I haven't heard anything like it.
I suppose if you like songs like Kashmir, by Led Zep, Dream
Brother, by Jeff Buckley, or Leary's Gate, by Ian Moore, you
should check this out. All those songs are rock songs with an
Eastern vibe. Nusrat's music is the real thing.

5 out of 5 stars Masterly, mesmerizing, magical.......2002-08-12

Long, drawn-out, fiery performances. Not for the casually interested in Khan's music, but the aficionados will have a field day.

5 out of 5 stars Other Wordly Music from another World.......2002-04-12

This music takes you places. Though it's hard to listen to for extended periods, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan & Party chant, bebop, and Qawwali themselves into a burning frenzy. Even though I don't understand a word that's being sung, the emotion and spiritual devotion transcends the words. If you really care to know what the song's about, a translation is in the liner notes. But trust me, it really doesn't matter when the music plays, you can tell, they're real...they mean it.

I started out with Nusrat by buying the CD "Rapture" because it was the only one available in the store. I'm glad I didn't stop there and went ahead and got this CD. Whereas "Rapture" cuts off songs to make it more palatable for Western shorter attention span ears and includes Nusrat's misallocated foray into Western pop blend, "The Supreme Collection Volume I" explores the music to it's depth, as it was meant to be heard.

This music is rich and I can see why PJ's Eddie Vedder was influenced by it. Keep an open mind and open soul and be amazed by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Party whipping themselves up into a frenzy of sound. They're real...they mean it.

5 out of 5 stars Khan NEVER DISSAPOINTS !.......2001-11-26

I have had this CD for about a year or so and this is one of the most important CDs in my collection of Khan's CDs. Each of the tracks is something that you have to understand to enjoy and once you get to know what is the message in the words... then it is simply mesmerising.

A must for anybody who likes Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist David Arkenstone cites Yes, Sibelius, and even author J.R.R. Tolkien as influences on his approach to composing, and evidence of their impact is apparent throughout this two-disc retrospective of Arkenstone's output from 1987 to 2000 for the Narada label. Using tracks selected from nine releases (plus a pair of label collections), this two-hour compilation showcases an imaginative artist who typically works the softer side of the progressive spectrum, at times leaning too heavily on dollops of sweetness or wispy ethnic flourishes when a harder edge would be more compelling. Even so, numerous tracks here reaffirm Arkenstone's ability to craft arresting, made-for-headphones soundscapes: the rhythmic, enveloping glow of "The Magic Forest"; the sonic aurora exuded by "Ancient Legend"; the violin-fueled Middle Eastern tempest of "Inshallah"; the uplifting insistence of "The Southern Cross." Kudos are also due Arkenstone's longtime drummer and brother Dan Chase for his inventive input on many tracks. --Terry Wood

wonderful. Just pick any song

I highly recommend him.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than "The Best of... ".......2006-03-28

This is David Arkenstone. My first Arkenstone was "Valley in the Clouds", which is still good even if a little dated. I loved "In the Wake of the Wind", and, while I panned "Caravan of Light", I am still an Arkenstone fan.

"Visionary" is a "best of" compilation type of album. But its two disks are a true "vision" of what David Arkenstone really is, IF you can forgive the obvious cherry picking of tracks designed to get you to buy his other efforts. Be careful about that, listen first if you can, and read the reviews!

"Visionary" is much better even than Arkenstone's own "Best of..." which is currently out. It approaches (but does not quite reach) "The Best of Chris Spheeris, 1990-2000", as a best of compilation. If it was possible to go through every one of his works, and pick the three best tracks from each (opinions obviously will always vary about which tracks are truly the "best") to put on a compilation, "Visionary" has come as close as it is possible to do just that!

"Visionary" is highly recommended by this 19-year Arkenstone vet.

4 out of 5 stars Enter the World of David Arkenstone.......2003-10-26

If it's true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then it's equally true that artistry is in the ear of the listener. The new age stylings of multi-instrumentalist (keyboards, guitar, flute, cello, et. al.) David Arkenstone can be at times, majestic and haunting and, yes, even playful--but always magical. This two hour-plus collection of his work (which surplants 1993's CHRONICLES and duplicates seven of that collection's tracks) is a wonderful introduction into one of the genre's most powerful performers. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
