With a majority of the songs on 10,000 Days clocking in well past the seven-minute mark, you wouldn't be entirely mistaken in thinking that the title of the album refers to how long it actually takes to make it through the whole thing. Two of the tracks--the sitar and tabla enhanced "10,000 Days (Wings Part 2)" and its suitably epic psych-rock sister "Rosetta Stoned"--even linger on for nearly a dozen leisurely minutes each. That's delightful news for the legion of Tool fans that have been waiting five years for the follow-up to 2001's Lateralus, which debuted at number one and sold 2.3 million copies in the United States. Singer Maynard James Keenan is back on mystical form after his hiatus with the politically slanted A Perfect Circle, sounding at once ethereal and eloquent as he calmly charges through the metal tempest of the opening track "Vicarious." The rest of the band, meanwhile, hits a series of high-flying moments with tracks such as "Jambi" and "The Pot." When Tool sounds as good as it does on these songs it's hard to get enough. Which makes it all the more baffling that a surprisingly large chunk of the disc is given over to mood-enhancing soundscapes like "Lost Keys" and "Vigniti Tres." A Lesson In Thinking.......2007-08-02

For those of you who are too lazy to do any research, let me fill you in. I've read alot about how the song "10,000 Days" sounds like a filler, or that it's anti-climatic. Folks, this song is about the death of Maynard's mother. She had a stroke and suffered from complications for, you guessed it, 10,000 days (she passed in 2003). So these two songs ("Wings For Marie Pt.1 and 10,000 Days Pt. 2) are Maynard's way of expressing his sense of loss for his mother. I think the title of the album and song are very fitting. This whole album deals with loss on several different levels. Tool's music has far more depth and meaning than most people realize or will admit. Do yourself a favor and really listen to the lyrics on this album and open up your mind. I guarantee you're opinion will change for the better. This is an amazing album from start to finish. If you like music that is also thought provoking, you need to pick up this album.

An aquired taste?.......2007-07-22

I purchased this CD the day after it was released, so why take so long to review? For starters, this album was NOT what I expected, though, with Maynard & Company and their creativity, I should've known better than to have any expectations other than greatness. Truthfully, for the first few days I had to force myself to listen to the album; my brain didn't know how to process the music. I slowly found myself skipping to tracks like "The Pot", fully engrossed in trying to figure out the lyrics and because something hit a chord in my psyche. Interestingly enough, my favorite songs on this album have changed several times, with my current and favorite for the longest time being the behemoth title track. It evolves so impressively that by the time the track is over a whopping twelve minutes later, I'm ready to listen to it again. Most interestingly, of all the 13,000+ CDs we own (including all the other Tool albums), this album has remained in our car's CD player the longest, and is STILL there in mp3 form fourteen months later. Yes, I do often skip tracks 7, 11 and sometimes 9 because they don't have a lot of musical meat on them, but that's what the skip button is for... The remaining tracks are powerful enough to carry this album to one of my all-time favorites. Note: Be sure and purchase the physical CD if only to check out the fantastic (and Grammy-winning) packaging artwork. An amazing album, even if it IS an aquired taste.

Long live the long song.......2007-07-22

This is my first Tool album so I have nothing to compare it to in their catalogue. I grew up listening to groups like Yes, original lineup Genesis, King Crimson, Pink Floyd etc.all of whom have recorded songs that clock in at over ten minutes. I have seen them all in concert I'm 52 yrs old and am so glad to hear a record that makes me stop and really listen to what's going on. These aren't just songs, they are compositions with beginings middles and ends. The two title tracks as well as Rosetta Stoned are particularly wonderful in that they are complete ideas. Sit down and let those songs take you on a little trip. It will change you. I saw them this week at th PNC in Holmdel, NJ and while I felt they were bone crushingly loud, I was blown away by their performance. I can't wait to see them again.

Everything about Tool's fourth album is an experience, starting with the packaging, which consists of liner credits printed on a translucent plastic sleeve over the CD and a booklet that layers anatomical representations atop one another--the first page pictures musculature and blood vessels; the next, bones; the third, internal organs; and so on. It's worth describing the packaging of Lateralus because it says much about the astonishing music within. Maynard James Keenan and company understand the expectations riding on this much-anticipated release and they've delivered the goods! While it remains in the Tool tradition of trance-inducing progressive metal, Lateralus is tighter, clearer, crisper, and all around a notch above their admirable previous releases. Aenima was marred by muddy production and a certain predictability. Undertow had a cleaner sound but wasn't as confident or adventurous. With Lateralus, Tool have raised an already lofty bar still higher by coming up with a collection that kicks major ass. --Genevieve Williams

Saw them live on the Lateralus tour! What a show! This CD is amazing! Everything about Tool is amazing. I just don't know what else to say. I could actually do a thought provoking review but what the hey. Just listen to it and love it!!

I can't even begin to describe TOOL, other than that listening is believing. Amazing, amazing band. I just saw these guys 2 weeks ago on the 10,000 Days Tour in Winston-Salem, and it was the best live performance I have witnessed, hands down...
Ok, so for "Lateralus"...Yeah, it's my favorite TOOL album, although I am a big fan of Aenima and Undertow. I think it's slightly funny that when this album came out back in '01 most TOOL fans were confused by it, only now, in '07, to call it their favorite. Each song is a journey itself within the entire album experience. I feel that "Lateralus" showcases each bandmember the best of all their albums. "The Grudge" is probably TOOL's best album-opener. Maynard has some awesome, intense lyrics: "Saturn comes back around! Picks you up like a child! Or drags you down like a Stone! Sinking deeper!" And Adam Jones has some awesome licks here. Now for "Schism," I will say I originally felt indifferent about it for awhile, now I just get it. "Reflection" is a very note-worthy song; Easily one of my Top 3 TOOL songs. Awesome beat from Danny Carey. I just wish I could've gone to the '02 Lateralus Tour to hear it played live.....And "Lateralus"...God, it's indescribable. One of the most rockinest, inspiring and powerful songs I have ever heard, EVER. The best way I can describe it to someone who hasn't heard it, is it's like the equivalent of "Stairway to Heaven" in modern times.
Just buy this album, OR download it, NOW. Maynard is legendary. Danny is one hell of a drummer and could lay down a beat for ANY metal band on earth. Justin Chancellor is a pretty sick basist (again "Reflection" is tight). And Adam is Adam; The guy is capable of melting anyone's face off with a guitar solo. AND go see TOOL live; You won't be disappointed.

An experience unlike any other!.......2007-06-25

Describing what this album (or tool) sounds like is futile. The first time I heard them i thought it was loud, abrasive, and often downright painful. I HATED it. But one thing I had to admit even then. I wasn't getting the whole picture...there was a whole lot more happening inside that sonic chaos than I could understand. I felt a bit insulted actually. The initial reaction was to give up, but something held me back. I resolved to bear through it and figure it out.

There will always be a sea of creative beings at any moment in time vying for our attention. Fads come and go, and the only true judge of quality is history. We trust history to separate blimps like the Monkees from beacons like the Beatles.

It is my firm belief that there are only two bands out there, who are truly leading the way. Everybody else is just trying to keep up. Tool is one of these two bands. (I won't tell you who the other band is...but it starts with 'R' ends with 'd' and has an 'adiohea' in the middle)

Maybe you've heard a friend rave about Tool, or maybe you've seen one too many people wearing a Tool shirt. You heard the singles on the radio and thought they had their moments. But you're not sure. 4.5 stars? Who are these people giving this album such high ratings? Are they stupid goth kids? Are they violent dirty headbangers? Are they satan worshiping skinheads? Are they drunk frat boys? Are they sophmoric nu metal fans? Maybe.

Or maybe were just a bunch of people with all sorts of different tastes in music who recognize what an achievement this album is.

Make no mistake about it. This album is the Sistine Chapel of Tools work.

Buy this album...and be ready for a challenge. The rewards are well worth the effort!

How good can you get?.......2007-06-20

In Tool's case, FREAKIN' AWESOME! This album is so unique, so powerful, and so wonderfully written that only Tool could've done it. Ear candy to any prog-metaller (sorry for making up the dumbest word ever), or even to just any true music lover. And what a cool sound they've got. Danny Carey's drumming is not what most of us think of when we think "drumming". It's very tribal, with lots of tom-toms and snare drums with the snares off, and also very complex, playing through the quite difficult time signatures and elaborating on them with ease. So yeah, a good drummer does not a good band make. But what about a guitar player who plays interesting but absolutely CRUNCHING riffs, or a bass player who elaborates on the melody while simultaneously creating a different, cool, low-end groove? Or a great singer who sounds like no one else (except those who have tried to imitate him)? All this, plus the icing on the already great cake...songs like "The Grudge", "The Patient", "Schism", the "Parabol/Parabola" suite, the title track, and the "Disposition/Reflection/Triad" trilogy. Even the weird, one-minute interludes are cool.
In conclusion: 6 stars, really. The inferior "10,000 Days" got five. If you like this type of music, or just good music, or if you are a slightly brain-damaged Tool fan who somehow hasn't bought this yet, BUY IT! LISTEN TO IT! REVEL IN ITS GLORY! Thank you.

intelectual music.......2007-06-19

Had the lateralis copy and could not wait to listen to it, then when listening to it I thought to myself intelectual sounding music--loved though the song watch the weather change. Sound was too techie, had all these formats, but one thing only was that it lacked to me the driving bass lines of paul d'amour so out with it to have maggots somewhere.

With its heavy-duty distortion, weighty rhythms, and cynical lyrics, Tool is a heavy metal band for the '90s. Rather like Metallica circa ...And Justice for All, the sound is focused heavily on texture, with vocals and guitars layered one atop the other, and heart-pounding drums underlying everything. There's not a whole lot of variety on Tool's second full-length album--most of the songs start off fairly low-key, kicking into high gear for the chorus, and repeat--but Maynard James Keenan's distinctive voice, the prog-rock stylings over a heavy metal base, and a supremely unhealthy dose of vitriol make this the perfect album to bang your head to. --Genevieve Williams

Perhaps the best album of the 90's........2007-07-29

From the opening of Stinkfist to the closing seconds of Third Eye, there is absolutely nothing that could be changed for the better. Everything just flows so well in this album I can't think of a single time I have ever skipped a track. This is the one album I would most likely recommend for any new listeners looking for their first experience of Tool. It has some of the more recognizable radio played tracks, like Stinkfist, Eulogy, and Forty-six & 2 (personal favorite). In my opinion this has to be the best album in all of the 90's and was a ray of hope showing that not all groups were going the way of nu-metal.

Tool is one of the most talented bands I have ever heard, both musically & lyrically. They have a sensual, melodic, rhythmic, dramatic, powerful, gnawing, raw, yet symphonic sound. The lyrics are educated, poetic, unnerving, yet truthful all at the same time. Their music is hauntingly beautiful in that there is nothing else like it out there. Their blend of opus-like orchestration, powerful spine-tingling rock sounds & intelligent lyrics is sheer genius! Maynard James Keenan's voice is as hypnotic as it is chameleon-like. His range from melodic to raw is seamless, intense, & wonderfully refreshing in a world of today's "been there, heard that" sound of most rock bands. Danny Carey's skill with the drums is unparalleled. Oh my God, the DRUMS! They eat at you, they move you, they draw you in & they change the surface of your skin! Danny ROCKS! He is the essence of what I crave in "the beat", "the hit", "the soul" of rock! He is splendid! Bassist Justin Chancellor & guitarist Adam Jones are brilliant! They seduce your ears with their incredible skill. This band is easily one of the BEST there is & I know that they will stand the test of time. Rarely is there such an incredible union of deliciously talented musicians & I am truly grateful that they found each other. How unfortunate the music world would be without Tool!

what's not to say?.......2007-06-22

I can't see how anybody can be new to this band, but if you are, this is their best album. Not that any of thier albums suck, because Tool is the band that nobody with ears has ever hated. I like the industrial metal riffs, combined with the hallucinatory acid rock, and of course Maynard's mysterious lyrics and passionate vocals. Face it people, THIS BAND ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was introduced to this band back in 1996 and I was instantly hooked, and then after going to the website and doing research and reading what the band was into I was taken way aback. These people have huge knowlegde base on higher powers-- satan worship. I have done a lot of research and have found that the lead singer has a very offbeat sense of humor and ANYBODY that makes fun of this band will be sorry, I have reported the drummers website for very obscure remarks made and I would seriously reconsider this band since the drummer is a direct affiliate of aleister crowley, who in the most simple sense sacrificed his own son. These band members are not teenagers, they are ADULTS.

Greatest Tool album.......2007-06-13

I am a big Tool fan, got to see them a few weeks ago in Corpus and they rocked. This in my opinion is their finest album. Hands down one of the hardest and most creative albums I have ever heard. This is Tool at their very hardest, and at their very best.

Great songs; Not-so-good audio quality.......2007-03-08

I bought this CD for the song "Tender Years", which has been one of those songs I've had a distant admiration for since I saw this movie back in the 80s. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the audio quality of this cd isn't the best. It sounds like it's been recorded live with some guy with a microphone (without the live crowd noise).

Cruising with Eddie & the Cruisers.......2007-01-19

This is an album of great rock music that I enjoy listening to during my morning jogs or cruising the vast distances of Australia.
Each song is a story supported by wonderful music and strong beat.
It is just a shame that the "Eddie & the Cruisers" movies and music got little or no exposure in Australia.
This is certainly an album to be enjoyed.

Arguably their finest album, this follow-up to Opiate showcases Tool at their best, assisted by clean, crisp production, without the muddiness of Aenima. Edgy guitar riffs are complemented by spitting, heavy bass, especially on "Sober" and "Crawl Away". Lyrically, Tool are at their vitriolic best, targeting religious hypocrisy ("Intolerance," "Sober"; always a popular theme), the loss of innocence and its consequences ("Prison Sex"), and deliberate ignorance ("Swamp Song"). Henry Rollins makes a guest appearance on "Bottom," which, along with "4 Degrees," deals with questions of identity. Undertow is also Tool's most musically adventurous album, lacking the occasionally numbing sameness of Aenima, and with considerably more sophistication than their previous work. the one I liked the most?.......2007-06-19

The riffs are good and simple with low driving bass lines, and the drums are decent, the pictures in the album are pulp fiction to me and the song "sober" is probably the most offbeat and power-ridden song on all their albums. I gave the album 2 stars because of my doing research into their band and found out that they are a bunch of intellects-- they are way too smart to be in heavy metal rock prog... blah blah blah. Ultimately I threw the album away.

A more better kind of metal.......2007-04-24

Even though I can speak from personal experience that fans of Tool can get uber-defensive to the point where it's kind of creepy, for the most part they at least have reason to have much praise. In many ways similar to Rush, each band member offers an element worthy of being in the band without having dispensable members. Before they hit a bigger plateau with their next release "Aenima", Undertow was the best Tool record and for some it still is. While for me, it's arguably Lateralus, it's still hard to throw anything negative towards Undertow, their first full-length (with the EP Opiate coming out first).

Intolerance: One of my favorite songs from the album. From its heavy opening riff to the smooth tempo changes to it's catchy "lie cheat and steal" hook that is so fun to belt out, it's one of the better Tool songs around. 9/10

Prison Sex: If there's one word to describe this one, it's kind of "fun". It just has a great groove that you can almost dance to (some atypical dance of course). Controversial lyrics and video, it's another one of the more popular songs and worth a listen. 9/10

Sober: If it wasn't for Schism, this would probably be the de facto signature Tool song although probably people consider it to be. Structure-wise it's pretty simple which is strange with Maynard's vocals getting progressively more emotive in the chorus. 9/10

Bottom: Man they're on a roll. Another homerun with heavy riffs and a great vocals and end scream by Maynard. My only complaint is the really quiet section. Spoken by Henry Rollins, While it does set up the climax, it takes a bit too long to get to. 8.5/10

Crawl Away: To be honest, I'm not completely fond of this one. The riffs are there, vocals and musicianship but there's just something that doesn't do it for me. Maybe it's having 4 great songs in a row and while it's a listenable track, it wasn't as immediate as others. 7.5/10

Swamp Song: One of the more underrated songs on the album. One thing that's quite surprising about it is how hooky it is. A guitar riff you can hum all day to a sing-along section (if you want) when Maynard sings "I hope it sucks, I hope it sucks you, ****er, I hope it sucks you down". 9/10

Undertow: Right from the start, it's very upbeat and chockful of riffs with many tempo changes that just feels right (it's rare to find most bands who are that comfortable with jumping all over the place). Even though it's not that big a favorite, it's still an album highlight. 8/10

Four Degrees: A sitar riff opens the song with a main catchy riff you'll hear throughout the song. Like many Tool songs, there's usually an element that brings you into the songs and makes it worth remembering, unlike most bands who play for 10 minutes and you can't remember a thing. 8/10

Flood: To be honest, I'm not a big fan of this. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, it just doesn't hook me the way it should. It's not like I need poppy melodies or radio-friendly lengths but I at least need something to make the song memorable and this one took awhile. Probably a grower. 7.5/10

I'll forego trying to review Disgustipated since it's just so...weird. But besides that, this is a very consistent record and while it doesn't have the acclaim and success Aenima or Lateralus had, it's still a very worthy addition to the band's catalogue.

undertow review.......2007-04-05

It's cool. I had this "tape" several years ago and it got eaten by my player. I always wanted the CD so I got it. It is as good as I remember it being.

The Undertow Has Me..........2007-02-23

Heavy and thick, Tool's Undertow made a fan out of me. Actually, the first Tool album I bought was AEnima (also excellent), but the first Tool song I heard was Sober (off of this album). Interesting video for that song. Anyway, Metal heads and Progressive Rock fans everywhere should give Tool a try, and Undertow is a very good place to start. I also have AEnima, Lateralus, and 10,000 Days as well. Many say that Tool went downhill with their newest offering 10,000 Days, but I'd say that it really isn't that bad. It may not beat the juggernauts Undertow, AEnima, and Lateralus, but it is worth a listen or five. Long live Tool!

All hail the return of novelty music's reigning king! Straight Outta Lynwood easily bests 2003's Poodle Hat and shows that Yankovic does know what he does best. Part of the secret to Weird Al's success is that he's never been very weird at all, and very rarely are his satires in any way "biting"--or even satires, really. The 11-minute parody of R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet" is funny at least for the first listen, but it's hard to ridicule something so largely ridiculous in the first place (plus Jimmy Kimmel totally got the jump on him). The best thing Mr. Yankovic has always done is to take some decent pop tune, change a word or phrase, invent an entirely new premise for the tune, and make an inspired video to go along with it. He does that several times here; Green Day's "American Idiot" becomes the hockey-obsessed "Canadian Idiot," and "White & Nerdy" is a truly inspired take on Chamillionaire's "Ridin'." That song (and video, included here on the dual-disc CD/DVD) is breakneck-paced and so funny it's a disservice to quote from it at all. "Polkarama!" is a return to W.A.'s novelty roots: a handful of mildly dated hit songs (50 Cent to Modest Mouse!) delivered in straight-ahead, sped-up polka style. It's toe-tapping and sweet. I almost died laughing........2007-06-28

I listened to this album for the first time tonight. Eleven years ago tonight, a friend got us tickets to a Weird Al concert. While driving home from the concert, we had a car accident and he died. After the first verse of "I'll Sue Ya," I seriously wondered if I might die laughing and join him!

I'll go through track by track:
White and Nerdy: Funny, I've heard this before so it didn't seem as new, but as a computer programmer I got a lot of good laughs. And I do hand-code HTML4!
Pancreas: Another novelty artist named Mindless Drug Hoover released a song with the same name and a similar concept. I wondered if by some weird hand of Eris, Weird Al had done the same song, but nope! He did something even more insane, even tying in things like gravity.
Canadian Idiot: I don't listen to much pop music, so haven't heard the originals, but another fun song making fun of racism. Everyone bags on Canadians anyway. One note: Weird Al even parodies the war.
I'll Sue Ya: Okay, here we go, definitely a favorite song. As said, after the first verse I wondered if I would join my friend, and if I could even handle a second verse! I did leave Earthlink, because I became dissatisfied with their tech support, so that struck a chord. Everyone has had issues with Verizon. And don't even mention New Jersey! I see this listed as an original song, but it sounds like a song done in the style of Rage against the Machine. Perfect! I really enjoy it when he doesn't parody a song per se, but parodies a group or style. This has always brought out his creativity. Sadly, some of the ridiculous things he yells out have actually happened (a guy sued someone for breaking his ankle while robbing his place.) I love this song!
Polkarama: Another classic Polka tune. As said I don't listen to much popular music, so for me these Polka songs provide a good insulated way to absorb the dirtier music of this time. I'll stick with these versions!
Virus Alert: Another great computer song! The main part would make a great sound alert. It has one of those catchy melodies and concepts that will just stay in your head for days, especially the next time your antivirus software alerts you with a new update! Virus Alert! (You could, of course, just use Linux, but we'll save that for another rant.)
Confession Part III: I don't know if he parodied a song here, or simply parodied the style of the current music, but either way he did a hilarious job. Every guy will love the last spoken line of the song.
Weasel Stomping Day: A little silly song, not much to say, but have fun!
Close but No Cigar: Okay, now I have a confession to make. I downloaded this album on bittorrent, and this song didn't play, so I did not hear it. I feel doubly glad I bought the CD.
Do I Creep You Out: Okay, I've heard the original, but can't put my finger on it. In a silly way, I consider this a song from every guy to every girl!
Trapped in the Drive Thru: I've heard the original referenced, and saw the South Park episode, an can imagine the original. This song treks in at around eleven minutes, and it does sort of go on, fut for me, this just added to the theme of the song, a tedius hunger-driven trip to the drive thru.
Don't Download this Song: A great capper for the album. Doubly funny since my downloaded copy missed a track, as if to underscore the point. It reminds me of the South Park episode which covered this theme. Buy my CD so I can afford a diamond-studded swimming pool. Classic!

In summary, I love this album, and consider it one of his best. I know my friend would have loved it too! Through various events, I know Weird Al as a very compassionate human being, and in his own way, a visionary.

I've been a fan of "Weird Al" Yankovic for 24 years now. After all these years, he's still as funny as ever (or perhaps my sense of humor hasn't matured since I was a teenager). If you are a fan of Al, you pretty much know what you're going to get on an album; about an equal number of parodies and original songs, plus a polka medley of recent hits. Hey, it's a proven formula, so why mess with it? This is a very funny album. "White & Nerdy" is probably the funniest song, but all of them are at least somewhat funny. Go and buy the CD like you know that you should.

I picked up this CD because "Weird Al" Yankovic is coming to town and I have tickets to go with my daughters (do not tell them, but we have seats in the front row, just left of center so I can hear with my one good ear). When I was a kid most of the records I had were Smothers Brothers records, I had a teacher who played Spike Jones songs for us, my father taped several Allan Sherman albums for us, and in college I discovered Dr. Demento and Tom Lehrer (not necessarily in that order). So I am a big fan of musical parodies and there can be no doubt that Yankovic is the Shakespeare of that peculiar little niche of the music business. I consider "The Saga Begins" to be his magnum opus and in looking at his body of work what is impressive is not only his longevity but the way his work has improved from those early days when it was just him on accordion and Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz banging on the accordion case.

It turns out that "Straight Outta Lynwood" is Yankovic's most successful album of all time and his most successful single with "White & Nerdy" making it all the way to #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 ("Eat It" was his previous top single which made it to #12). I still think "Running With Scissors" is his best album, but I am definitely heartened to know Yankovic is going strong. With albums coming out every three or four years he appears to have found his stride. There is the obligatory polka medley and several new style parodies, with "Pancreas" (Brian Wilson), "I'll Sue Ya" (Rage Against the Machine), "Virus Alert" (Sparks), "Close But No Cigar" (Cake), and "Don't Download This Song" (fundraiser songs). The surprise is that I liked the style parodies more than I did the parodies of particular songs, which is obviously turning my "Weird Al" universe upside down.

My only problem with this album is clearly my personal problem because with the exception of "Canadian Idiot" I had to look at the liner notes to find out which songs were parodies and which were originals. The fact that I had not heard (or perhaps only not remembered) "White & Nerdy" is a parody of "Ridin'" by Chamillionaire (featuring Krayzie Bone) was received with jaw-dropping astonishment by my daughters. I am down to recognizing only three songs out of 14 in the album's pokla medley, "Polkarama!" ("Let's Get it Started," "Don't Cha," and "Pon de Replay"). I had forgotten that Taylor Hicks had done "Do I Make You Proud," but I do not think I am alone in that regard. But I had no idea "Trapped in the Drive-Thru" is based on a R. Kelly song, although I did recognize Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog" when it popped up.

Flip over the CD and you get to the DVD, which has animated videos for all of the original songs, namely: "Don't Download This Song," "I'll Sue Ya," "Virus Alert," "Close But No Cigar," "Pancreas" and "Weasel Stomping Day." The videos for "White & Nerdy," "Do I Creep Your Out," "Canadian Idiot," and "Trapped in the Drive-Thru" are all for parodies and for some reason that justified exclusion (insert pout here). The videos are followed by a short documentary that simply shows Yankovic and his band recording some of the songs and paying testament to his attention to detail. You can also listen to the entire album with the lyrics as subtitles, each song accompanied by a photograph of Yankovic from infancy to young adulthood (his parents liked the triple image option). Finally, you can do the karaoke function and get the music and the lyrics so you can sing the songs yourself. Consequently, there are enough extras here to justify rounding up on the disc overall.

Concert Update: So last night "Weird Al" came to town and as I suspected they set up two rows in the orchestra pit for winners of radio contests for tickets (sigh). But during one of the songs (that does not appear on any of the albums) he came down in the audience. Al was singing to the women in the audience but when he was walking in front of it was all dads and kids, so he sang to my oldest daughter (she just got accepted into the Peace Corp to go do what she wants to do where she wants to do it so she is having a good week). We also picked up over a thousand dollars in "Weird Al" money. For the record, he does complete versions of five songs from this album (1, 3, 4, 5, 9), excerpts from three more (7, 10, 11), and one music video (8).

Loved it!!.......2007-05-29

I'll be the first to admit that some of these songs DID NOT catch on with me right away!! In fact at first I thought this would be the first Weird Al Album I bought that I would not enjoy very much.... I WAS WRONG!!! After a few listens these songs really grew on me!!
I loved "White and Nerdy" straight away (I am White and Nerdy accorging to my wife) and the song nails a few asects of the nerd culture that I perssonally have seen or experienced so it was quite a treat!
"Pancreas" is an AWESOME tribute to Brian Wilson and his style of music (if you are too young to know who Mr. Wilson is....listen to the beach boys and check out some of his own albums).
I also thought "Canadian Idiot" was great!! Being a Floridian and knowing a bunch of seasonal Canadians it was rather funny and hit home!!
Close But No Cigar was an excellent song that was an abvious style parody of CAKE. Loved the words to the song and the little flaws that made him break up with each gorgeous woman!!
I could list reasons for liking all the songs but I don't want to take up too much space!! Let me just say that you will love this album as long as you give it a chance!!
Don't forget to visit Weird Al's website and get the free parody "You're Pitiful" (parody of "You're Beautiful") which was originally going to be on the album but was tanked at the last minute do to record company lawyers.

One more thing. This album is a dual disc. One side plays as a DVD the other as a CD. This disc MAY NOT play in certain drives or DC players so just be careful!!
The videos were hilarious though!!

"That's not why I bought this album".......2007-05-26

I'm here to tell ya, there are a lot very good reasons to buy this album. But most of them are not why I bought this album.

Sure Al's parodies are all great fun, but that's not why I bought this album. Sure this whole album is fraught with hilarity, but that's not why a bought this album. I didn't even buy this album because of all the cool video's included. IT'S THE MUSIC, MAN. That's why I bought this album. Can this Al guy sing or what - even if he is a little weird. (Although, I'm not too sure about the weird part, but that's what Al keeps telling everyone so I'll go along with it.)

Case in point; So there I was, sitting in my mini van at a red light, jamming to the music, not really paying any attention to the lyrics, just enjoying the sounds the band and singers were putting out. With my head bobbin' to the beat and hands drumming on the steering wheel, I noticed an elderly lady in the car next to me looking my way. She seemed to have an air of disdain about her at seeing a gentleman of my years acting like some dang fool kid. That very moment is when my ears picked up on the words "I blew my nose and wiped it on your cat". The lyric caught me totally off guard and I spontaneously burst into laughter. Seeing that, the lady snapped her head forward, stomped on the accelerator and speed through the red light trying to get away from that dang fool (being myself) as fast as she could.

Well, I guess that probably isn't why you should by this album either, but I can tell ya... This double CD sure is a lot of fun and you will absolutely enjoy the music.

This album really makes me happy. When I need to get a smile from myself or just about anybody else, I can just put on "I Will Survive." Truly, the entire album is big fun. Tons of great lyrics. Great horn. Groovy vocals. Just a really fun album.

Excellent.......2007-04-24

I tell you, to fully appreciate Cake, you need a decent pair of headphones or speakers. Fashion Nugget has awesome bass, guitar lines, and decent sound and a lot going on. It's easy to miss a lot of the details that make Cake so good, they pack a huge hit at times, but if you miss it, Cake isn't as good as they really are.

Enough of that, the music is great. There's country, jazz, rock, the band's sound is very unique. The horn is a great addition, as well as the drums, the many guitar lines, John actually sings, and the bass lines. Anybody who wants bass will like Fashion Nugget's basslines. The lyrics are pretty creative, but sometimes hard to figure out. Any creative lyrics takes a whlie to realize it's genius. No looking on Wikipedia or Arisfacts first, _______ cheaters!

Okay, I realize I can't do much after other people explained it better, but I think it's good. This one is sort of a gamble, try downloading a few songs (please buy, support the artist, you __________). Don't rely on sound samples on this one much, beacuse the sound will sound so much like _______, and you need good sound to do Fashion Nugget justice. Don't even bother with them, although iTunes has good samples, more than Amazon (ps iTunes is free). I'm stuck with amazon, because my internet _______ _________ _________. ________ AOL.

This is miles better than that bland waste Comfort Eagle. I might consider Prolonging The Magic (possibly the others).

311 for dummies (that's not an insult).......2007-07-31

This is mostly an excellent gift to buy for somebody. This gives them at least a couple of reasons to introduce them to each of their cd's, so that they can join the 311 unity, mother_________!

Basically, I own 311's 7 of 311 albums, and I wouldn't, buy this for myself. But if I wanted to get someone else into them, I would buy this. That's basically the only valid use for it, if you are already into them, don't buy this for yourself.

If you don't have the three other songs, you can get those on iTunes. Don't buy this yourself, just great to give somebody a taste of what other 311 albums are like. Just remember to let Transistor grow on them. Make more people 311 fans by giving them as gifts. IF you are somebody who wants to get into them yourself, start with 311.

311 Hits Compilation Perfect...Almost..........2007-04-15

311 is closing in on the 20 year mark of being a band, and for any band that continues to prove successful beyond it's 10th year is an amazing feat. 311 has lately been slummed by critics and some fans alike, but the latter day 311 is just as good as the early day 311, although the early 311 had just a little more funk thrown into it. Now, it comes as no surprise that a greatest hits compilation would surface, and so it has with Greatest Hits '93-'03. While this compilation showcases a lot of good 311 songs, I would have easily put 4 or 5 more songs on this compilation to make a little more close to what it should have been if it were only a single disc greatest hits.

First off the pros to this compilation: you have the hits ranging from the aggressive breakthrough single "Down" to the breezy tropical "Amber", one of the most beautiful songs written by 311. In between you have all the heavy rockers ("Creatures", "Flowing", "Transistor", "Homebrew" to name a few) and you have some of the more melodic moments ("All Mixed Up", "First Straw", "Beyond The Gray Sky"). While a lot of good material was included here, there are a few songs I would have included on this compilation that, in my opinion, would have made it better. "Freeze Time" was a huge rocker from Soundsystem that could have been included here; "Purpose" is a little Carribean sounding with a heavy chorus thrown in the mix; "Feels So Good" from music should have had just as much right to be on here as "Do You Right"; "What Was I Thinking" was a minor radio hit (I remember hearing it on WAAF's real rock 20 peaking at no. 17); and lastly, "Applied Science" should have been on here as it's a staple of 311's many concert shows.

So there you have it. While not the most perfect greatest hits package to come around this century, curious people wondering about 311 would do fine to pick up this compilation for a sampler of 311. Those who want more out of this should pick up 311's other albums and make their own compilation (which I did) and rock out. But by no means a failure, this is a good introduction into the world of the Omaha, Nebraska quintet.

Enjoyable, if of course you like 311 like I do!.......2007-03-14

311 are one of my favorite bands, but their funky rock approaches was hit and miss over the years. Still, this greatest hits CD is about as good as it can be. Considering that 1993-2003 was a window of time in which the rock, pop, rap and metal music market went through a lot of changes, 311 still tried to stick to a formula that worked.

Their music was energetic and often had a party antics type theme to it. From the songs "Down" "All mixed up" "Transistor" and "Love Song", this album is truly a collective song list that features their strongest efforts. I loved the lesser-known music they had over the years that the MTV generation may have missed, but this one is great because you get all the hits and then some. I always liked this band because they were not depressing or hateful in their songs, they made fun music!!

An "unbalanced" compilation.......2007-02-11

I gave this 4 stars for a reason...and that reason is that this greatest hits album is "unbalanced," meaning it has too much of one type of song and not enough of another type. "Greatest Hits: '93-'03" is riddled with slow, soft songs, and that's not necessarily a bad thing, but they do get old after a while. They're good songs, don't get me wrong, but I was hoping for more heavy and semi-heavy songs too.

Amber is a good slowed-down song to put on this compilation, no doubt about it. It sounds awesome. Amber is on the "From Chaos" album. And so was "Champagne." But Champagne was also an awesome slow song. So I ask, why wasn't Champagne on the Greatest Hits? Why wasn't it a hit at all? Instead we have "I'll Be Here Awhile" and "Wouldn't You Believe"...they aren't bad songs, but they aren't great either. Put it this way, I won't remember 311 for those two songs; when I wanna remember "slow songs on From Chaos", my mind will immediately think of Amber and Champagne. Also, the song "From Chaos" should have been included on here as well. I know it wasn't even a single, but it was still an awesome song, I think...

Another gripe--only one grassroots song? That was their best album...and all the producers could do is put one song on the greatest hits album? What about Lucky, 8:16 A.M., Applied Science, Silver, Lose, Six, or 1,2,3? Aren't they all good songs too? I'm sure at least one of those could have been on this collection...

For the most part, the Blue Album's hits have been covered pretty nicely, my only change would have been to take off Don't Stay Home and replace it with Jackolantern's Weather. That's a great song...But here comes the compilation's biggest flaw: Soundsystem, Transistor, and Evolver. The hits from these albums all sound similar to each other, sometimes I can't even tell the difference without looking at the song name on my iPod. Come Original, Transistor, Beautiful Disaster, Creatures, Beyond the Gray Sky, and Flowing are all decent songs, but I think other songs would have been better in their place.

The song, Do You Right, I think is an awesome song. Nothing else to say about that. Lastly, three other tracks not featured on studio albums have spots in the greatest hits--First Straw, Love Song, and How Do You Feel. How Do You Feel is an awesome track. Love Song is pretty good. First Straw is not so good. I guess it all boils down to opinion.

In conclusion, the album does get boring at times because of similar-sounding songs. It needed more heavy or medium songs in it. In my opinion, a good solution to this problem would have been to make 2 greatest hits albums: one for early 311, and one for later 311. Music, Grassroots, and the Blue Album could all be housed under the first compilation while Soundsystem, Transistor, From Chaos, and Evolver could be on the 2nd one. But that's just me.

This is really an under-rated CD...some people don't know they made a 2nd movie. Don't expect it to sound like the 1st soundtrack...this has a strong late 80's sound. It is supposed to be 20 years later.

The only song missing from this I would have liked to see is 'When The World Was Young'...but they put it on part-3...the Unreleased Tapes.

As the title of Tool's 1992 debut implies, they're none too impressed by religion, though other targets--fear ("Cold and Ugly"), hypocritical moralizing ("Jerk-Off"), nonconformity ("Hush")--get their time in the spotlight as well. Opiate is a collection of heavy, aggressive, cynical music (though the tail end of the title track sounds more like acid rock), packaged in songs noticeably shorter than on their later efforts (Undertow, 1993, and Aenima, 1996). While not as impressive as Undertow, arguably their finest effort, Opiate has a definite appeal. I got this album and immediately liked the heavy bass playing, but the lyrics were controversial along with the art displayed in the album. "A part of me" is an anti-military song in my opinion and as far as showing the priest rising to power on the cover, it is very wiccan--a new form of craft.

This is the first and last good release from Tool. "Opiate" is a fantastically raw, aggressive and garage-sounding album. It seethes with emotions that similar bands can only pretend to. Ministry's "Psalm 69..." is the only thing that comes close. After this, Tool cranks out three hours of guitar reverb, twelve beats-per-album and groaning sludge-metal hoo-hah. Is that even a sentence? It doesn't matter. But "Opiate" is a great, lightning-in-a-bottle release.

Employing dark, violent images and an abstract sonic palette, Tool pummels its listeners with a primal sound as distinct as it is disturbing. With a fixed, fiery glare, vocalist Maynard James Keenan assaults the audience with bone-chilling whispers and blistering hollers of unparalleled hatred and loathing. Behind him, heavy, ominous music swells and gives, building uncomfortable tension that makes your hair stand on end, then releasing that tension in frantic bursts of intensity.

Before you see my 3-star review, I will put one thing straight: I love Tool. They are one of my favorite bands and "Lateralus" is one of my top ten favorite albums of all-time. I love "Ænima" and "Undertow" as well. I don't even think that "Opiate" is a bad album, HOWEVER, one thing I will say is this:

This isn't terribly different from what a lot of the early '90's alt-metal artists were doing. Helmet and Prong churned out stuff like this for about as long and the results were more impressive. Helmet's lyrics were less juvenile than those on "Opiate." But that's one thing that makes this an interesting listen. It shows that they were not always a band that was about complexity and being big. I do prefer the more "pretentious" sides of Tool, though.

The band doesn't really hide their meanings under any of the messages. It doesn't require thinking about what the songs are about since they are all so straight-forward in the lyrics. Sometimes you just have to look at the titles, even, to know the meaning. 2 of the tracks are live, but it works since the production is so raw. In some points, I enjoy it and find it entertaining. The censorship message of "Hush" is against the idea of sugar-coating and other moments on it are noteworthy. Some of it is not really that interesting, and while it's probably the best musically, "Opiate" is just ridiculous in the lyrics. I see that it's anti-religion and such, but this shows how juvenile the lyrics in Tool were. I mean, even on a track like "Eulogy," Maynard was much more "deep" in content.

Overall, "Opiate" is not for the faint of heart and rough around the edges, but if you love Tool you may find something out of this.

in this tool ep which is there 1st is prolly one of the best manily because of the anger in maynards voice in hush and in jerk off this is still one of the best tool cds around. so pick her up
