Interstellar travel in your headphones........2007-05-31
Well, Stargate SG.1 has finally ended after 10 seasons, and this soundtrack CD covers only the first two. I think there's room for a new CD or two, and hopefully the Stargate SG.1 people will get around to creating one.
Anyway, I've listened to this CD once so far and I was very impressed. The music really is enjoyable on its own, and I found myself listening to the Cold Lazerus music twice before I continued throught the rest of the CD.
Finally, don't think there isn't much music on this CD because of the small nunber of tracks. Many of these tracks are six to ten minutes long.
Stargate Music Album.......2007-05-12
Great CD throughout. It's a shame the show is being cancelled after 10 years but this music helps to keep the memory on.
Not as good as the 1st Music release.......2004-10-24
The best of Stargate SG-1 is infact a 9 track compilation of the 1st 2 seasons of the TV show. It's really not the best of Stargate. I rather enjoyed the 1st release namely called Music of Stargate SG-1 and the actual movie music-score. However I still enjoyed the music from several episodes of the 2nd season, most notable being the music suite of Hathor.
A fan of the TV show should be pleasantly surprised by the suites in this CD. It won't disapoint.
one for the fans.......2004-05-07
This CD is really one for the fans. If you've not watched Stargate SG-1 before, then it will be very limited in its' appeal.
I personally enjoyed the CD, as I could relate the music back to the particular episodes in which they appeared. Some of the tracks are sweet and melodic, others are more ominious, so it doesn't come up short on variety.
The music sounds, for the most part, rather sythesised (which is why, if you are used to sprawling epic soundtracks from mainstram movies, I generally don't recommend this if you have never watched the show). Tracks are usually a mixture of synthesised sounds combined with more organic notes from traditional instruments, creating a very "sci fi" sound.
This is a great CD to work and study to as it provides great background music without being too intrusive.
Sweet.......2004-02-23
This is a great CD. Just listing to it makes me feel like I'm watching the show.

Album Description
Ask Still Remains, the young Grand Rapids, MI band, about what the last two years have been like and they'll begin by telling you how much they've grown as people and musicians. I've grown up a lot, explains vocalist T.J. Miller. I feel like I've come into my own as a songwriter. I haven't been afraid to write about things that I might have only alluded to on the last record. My lyrics have always been personal, but the new stuff is deeper, subjects I needed to and wanted to get out. Produced by Steve Evetts (Story Of The Year, Lifetime, Saves The Day) and mixed by Logan Mader (ex-Machine Head, ex-Soulfly guitars), The Serpent palatably demonstrates the culmination of the last two years of Still Remains' efforts and experiences. With a new line-up intact, Still Remains have written their best music to date. While songs like `Stay Captive' and `Dancing With The Enemy' showcase the band's versatility and musical growth towards the more alternative, songs like `The Wax Walls Of An Empty Room' confirm that the band will continue to hold their footing within the metal community.

Customer Reviews:
Terrific organ CD by a true virtuoso.......2007-04-20
For the bride desiring classical repertoire at her wedding, and who's lucky enough to have access to a proficient organist (and a decent instrument), this is an excellent CD to audition. Newman is a world-class performer, but most of the selections should be within the grasp of any trained, degreed organist. These are NOT pieces you'd ask the little old lady at the Methodist church to play on her Hammond!
For another example of Newman's work, see:
Kathleen Battle · Wynton Marsalis ~ Baroque Duet / Anthony Newman · Orch St. Luke's · Nelson
Worthy of Purchase.......2003-10-15
As a musician and music lover, I have looked extensively for the right music for my traditional wedding ceremony with a couple of twists. So tired of the traditional bridal march, I chose Rigaudon as my entrance. This CD has good-quality sound, able musicianship, and 28 selections from which to choose. The organ is the best instrument in a cathedral to inspire the congregants. The bass tones are not too throaty, and the high pitches are clear, yet pleasing to the ear.
This compilation is better than some others in that it is all played on organ, has so many selections, and the overall feel is regal and celebratory.
Serious Classical Wedding Music.......2002-03-04
Most of the "wedding" albums are filled with a 15 - 30 of the 50 or so greatest classical wedding hits. Sample the albums on line before you buy. In fact, if the budget is tight, you can do the whole selection process on line by just playing the samples. First consider the instruments that you plan to use - organ, piano, guitar, brass ensemble, whatever. The instrument of course will have much to say about what to consider. Then select albums that have the selections played on the instrument(s) you are expecting to use. An organ is quite versatile of course and can handle anything for a keyboard and even does nicely for the festive trumpet in case your marching band first trumpet is tied up doing lifeguard duty.
My daughter and I have been serious music lovers and amateur pianists, violinist (she only), organist (I only), and singers. Since our church has a very good new electronic organ that can simulate very well the rich tones of a real pipe organ, we are looking for some heavy duty music for organ.
Listen to the sample from item 5, the Rondeau from Abdelazer by Henry Purcell. Play it loud and imagine it as a recessional - with the bride and groom waiting to turn around until the first repetition of the magnificent theme.
This is the only wedding album I found with this Rondeau arranged for organ. Many other albums have this selection played by a small chamber orchestra. That's the way it was written, but we won't be paying for an orchestra in church. And it's magnificent on organ.
We will be using item 21, Where'er You Walk from Handel's Semele as well. It is a beautiful tenor aria with words that are just right. Look around for the words on the Internet - great poetry, and a great love song with stong religious meaning as well.

Customer Reviews:
Great Production and a great place to start.......2006-12-09
This is a 5 star affair but it would be nice to get a huge boxset of Santana's work. That said, the production is excellent and for a fan just starting out this is a fantastic overall view of Santana's output up through the 90s. He personally picked out the songs and that always seems to cause consternation among fans. Afterall, we all have our favorites and we expect that he would pick those songs. But it's great and the booklet has some nice insight into each of the songs and what made them, and continues to make them, special to Carlos.
Thankfully, there is nothing from Supernatural or Shaman.
Excellent overview, plus great production.......2005-05-08
Okay, Santana has been alive and recording long enough, that it would take a small loan from a bank to gather all his collective recording together for purchase (not that you could find them all at one source)... so, in an effort to condense them all, I would recommend getting this recording.
I suspect if you are buying this collection, you must already know something about Santana... so I won't go into every song on this outing, but some really good ones are the Woodstock playing of Soul Sacrifice... that is quite good. The drumming is good, if you enjoy drumming that is.. then the jam kicks in and it is quite enjoyable.
One of my favorite CS songs is Samba Pa Ti. This version is so clean and production so good, it sounds like heaven in the earphones.
Another great song is the tune (on the third CD) called Wings Of Grace. Sometimes I feel as though in an effort to make his songs sound so free, CS often gets clumbsy, but this song Wings Of Grace is so soaring.
Side Note: I saw CS in 97 before Supernatural made him the great comeback kid, and he opened up for Dave Matthews (who really gave CS a shot in the arm introducing him to an audience that helped spur the sales of Supernatural) and there were only a spotty bunch of us in the crowd that was not there to see DMB, but to see CS. It was fun.. we had the T Shirts on and kept yelling CARLOS inbetween songs. Roots opened up for CS that night, then it was on to DMB all three sets were great...
More than worth the money!.......2004-11-16
This fabulous collection of Santana's best (as of this collection's release date, anyway) is a feast for his fans and sure to attract new ones from the present generation. The tracks on Disc One alone make the set worth its purchase price with its splendid renderings of "Black Magic Woman" and "Oye Como Va". Thanks, Carlos, for giving such a treat to your fans.
LACKS PROPER REMASTERING; BUY THE INDIVIDUAL CD'S.......2004-11-15
Although the packaging for this set is lavish, the sound quality of the earlier tracks is very disappointing. "Evil Ways" sounds like it's coming out of an AM radio station, and the tracks from "ABARXAS" don't sound much better.
Fans should skip this set and buy the first 3 Santana albums that were remastered in 1998 (which sound better than even the Mobile Fidelity CD's).
Those 3 CD's also contain extra live tracks from the era of the original album's release that make ownership a must.
In addition: Columbia/Legacy has released the first Santana album as a "Legacy Edition". Expanded to two discs, it delivers the first album, remastered again in 2004, with additional session tracks; the first, discarded recorded sessions for that album, plus for the first time, the entire Woodstock performance set.
Difficult to rate this one--"Mudbone" is worth 5 stars alone.......2004-10-03
Driving cross country last year, my brother picked out a dozen CD's to help me along my way. I didn't want any jewel cases to save space. Of these many disks, disk three of Dance of the Rainbow Sperpent was included. It has no track information on the disk and only the title "Spirit Disk 3". I had no idea who I was listening to until I returned home. I thought the CD was a best of various guest artists disk like John Lee Hooker and Vernon Ried. I also wondered why he gave me disk 3 only. There was a reason.
Frankly I loved disk 3, particularly "Mudbone" of which the sample listed here only hints at it's potential. The song builds in intensity with all the instruments coordinated such that I thought perhaps a single artist layed the whole thing up in a studio. I strongly recommend those reading this, at the very least, download this piece of music as an mpeg file.
I like Santana. Overall, I didn't think much of this CD. I'd rate disk 1 as a 3 or 4 (better to buy the LP Abraxis than this), disk 2 as a weak 2, and disk 3 as a very strong 5. Disk one included a live version of Soul Sacrafice that is weak compared to the studio edition. By the way, I'd rate Abraxis as one of the best LP of all time, so why include any of it here, when that LP stands so strongly on it's own?
All in all, I liked the rhythm and subtlety of the song Mudbone on disk 3, so much that I was tempted to rate this album a 5 for that alone. I listened to that song over an over on autorepeat driving through the desert. Two tracks on disk 3 inlude John Lee Hooker, "The Healer" and the excellent "Chill out (Things are Gonna Change)". "Every Now and Then" with Vernon Reid is excellent also. When you mix talent like this, something wonderful happens.
The question is this? Do you want to buy all three disks to get disk 3? If it was me, I'd say yes it's worth it. On the other hand, if you listen to mpeg files, you'd be better off paying for and downloading just those few songs.

Rainbow Serpent is one of the most important recordings of Australian Aboriginal music ever made. David Hudson, master of the Aboriginal instrument known as the didgeridoo, combines with long-time collaborator and producer, Steve Roach, to create music from a 50,000 year tradition which maintains its heart and soul in the setting of a modern digital recording studio.
Traditionally, the didgeridoo is capable of only one note, although numerous overtones of that note can be brought out and a wide variety of blowing techniques can sharply change the sound. In
Rainbow Serpent, Hudson uses multiple didgeridoos, with simple percussion and some of Steve Roach's subtle digital processing, to create a unique recording that blends the most ancient musical sounds with the latest hi-tech sound devices.
Rainbow Serpent is clearly rooted in the Aboriginal tradition. Hudson uses the traditional technique of circular breathing to keep the flow of music continuous and to maintain its meditative state. In this technique, the player forces air out of his mouth while breathing in through the nose. The sound is punctuated by a repertoire of traditional grunts and cries, representing different animal spirits. This album is also the work of a contemporary musician and composer. Hudson uses original calls and vocalizing techniques to striking effect on Laura's Festival. Eerie, deep spatial effects are created by the combination of didgeridoo and digital reverb on Undara's Lava Tube; and in Leprechaun Corroboree, Hudson uses Celtic sounding percussion patterns as accompaniment.
Hudson's concluding piece is a spacey tour-de-force called New Beginning. Ringing harmonics, sweeping arcs of didgeridoos, and lonely bush sounds from Queensland, Australia, all inhabit the vast inner space of Steve Roach's digital studio environment.
Rainbow Serpent is not a relic of ancient history, but a new Aboriginal music for the late 20th Century.
Customer Reviews:
Eerie and spiritually soothing!.......2000-10-19
David Hudson's "Rainbow Serpent" album is a performance that has to be experienced to be appreciated. As a beginning didjeridoo player, it's amazing and instructive to hear the various tonal webs that Mr. Hudson weaves to the listener. It's easy to imagine sitting around a communal fire in the Outback with the stars overhead and the eerie but strangely beautiful and haunting sounds of the didjeridoo tugging at your primal memory. Excellent!
One of my favorites.......1999-03-31
This CD along with "Ourimbah" are my two favorite Didgeridoo CD's.
All David's work is excellent!.......1998-10-18
Rainbow Serpent is up to his usual high standard. I will always buy anything he does. If you want to hear a didgeridoo played by a master, this CD is a must.
Very good playing; pioneer of didjeridu and percussion.......1998-06-13
David Hudson is one of the few players recorded who exhibits trance playing. His use of percussion is always complementary to the didjeridu and the pieces are exemplary of arrangements with integrity. This recording is a big influence on my playing.

Some great music here, but a mixed bag.......2007-04-15
On their fourth studio album, the Dead Can Dance duo of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard transitioned away from the classical sound of their previous masterpiece, Within the Realm of a Dying Sun, and towards a more diverse set of influences, including eastern European and medieval music. While this disc contains some of their most brilliant tracks, I don't find that it holds together well as an integrated album when compared to some of their other efforts, and would actually rate it 3.5 stars if I could.
The two standout tracks here are the ones that open and close the album. The Host of the Seraphim is probably the most stunning music Lisa Gerrard has ever recorded, particularly the achingly beautiful rise and fall of the final chorus, which brings me both goose bumps and tears with every listening. Brendan's Ullyses is dazzling in its creativity, and features a rare of example of him singing glossolalia (the kind of wordless non-language that makes up nearly all of Lisa's singing) in the introduction, segueing into a weirdly speeded up waltz evocative of a demented merry-go-round. Both of these tracks fit well in the gothic semi-orchestral style of their earlier work.
The rest of the tracks are more of a mixed bag both with regard to style and quality. Brendan's Severance and Lisa's The Writing On My Father's Hand are lovely, and feature the medieval influences that would come to full flower on their next album, Aion, while Lisa's stark a capella Song of Sophia features more of an Eastern European sound. Mother Tongue begins with a passage of infectious, lively drumming, then downshifts into a more dreamy combination of drumming and chanting by Lisa. Orbis de Ignis is another medieval track, but a bit dull, while the sonorous Chant of the Paladin is eerie at first, but eventually becomes monotonous by the end of its nearly four minutes. Brendan's In the Kingdom of The Blind is typical stylistically of his songs of this period, and is often included on best of compilations, but I actually find it somewhat grating, unmusical and forced in its climax.
So, overall not necessarily their most cohesive album -- and at barely 36 minutes, one of their shortest -- but worth getting for the handful of standout tracks alone.
Some of the most superb music of the last century.......2006-11-22
I first heard the amazing tune "Ullyses" from this disk on the Seattle college music FM station KCMU/KEXP in about 1988, and instantly was fascinated with Dead Can Dance. I rushed out and bought this disk, and entered a whole new world of unparalleled beauty and taste. Middle eastern, british folk, and so many other influences applied with brilliant taste and audacity. As I understand it, Lisa Gerrard's lyrics are in a language of her own creation, designed to be evocative, but owing no particular reference to modern languages, and perhaps evoking a language which predates any modern language. Can you name an artist of such courage who, is also a pop-star? This is a triumph of high art! "The writing on my fathers hand" is exquisite with its delicate string tones and Lisa's evocative singing. Mother Tongue, with its drum tones is delicious. But "Ullyses" is my favorite, with Brendan Perry's rich and full vocal, a classic tale of the triumph of the human spirit in the face of global war. Arise "John Francis Dooley, wipe the sleep from your eyes, and embrace the light"! What else could a sensitive listener ask from a CD, great sound, great art, profound spiritual depth? This is one of the best disks I've encountered in all my 48 years. An associated disk is "This Mortal Coil/It'll end in tears" which features Lisa Gerard on several cuts, also highly recommended.
Spiritual and contemplative world music........2006-10-15
I own 6 CDs by Dead Can Dance. They consistently produce a great product. It is always difficult to select a favorite CD because of the range of influences in the music and the balance between the songs where baritone Brendan Perry dominates and those songs in which Lisa Gerrard and her chanting to the goddess presentations predominate. Of the two, I prefer his voice however to read all the reviewers, it appears she is the favorite of most listeners.
Flutes and trombones mix with cellos, dulcimers, and violins in these works. Perry's drumming is integrated into most of the works.
The influences are from Renaisance Christian chants, Middle Eastern chants from Egypt and Palestine, and Germanic-Celtic-Druid folk music.
The mood is usually moody, brooding, dark, somber, meditative rather than gleeful. In fact Dead Can Dance is never 'gleeful'. It is well integrated world music with a spiritual or contemplative direction.
The CD starts out strong with a call to worship piece called "The Host of Seraphim". I also liked Brendan Perry's percussion work in "Mother Tongue"; strong, decisive, elegant, and complex. The final work, "Ullyses" with its influence of ancient Greece and its long dreamy myth-like narrative by Brendan Perry is a favorite.
Dead Can Dance - Serpent's Egg.......2006-10-01
I will make no bones about it - the Serpent Egg's openener "The Host of Seraphim" is probably one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. The title describes it perfectly - this is the kind of William Blakesque biblical grandeur that can't be done justice in words, and it sets the standard for an album which, for the better part, manages to keep-up. The Serpent's Egg is an album decidedly European in flavour, but drenched with the influences of so many cultures that it becomes something utterly unique - the Platonic ideal of shadowy antiquarianism. Through its reverberating corridors it paints a picture of forgotten times and places outside of time.
The arrangements are deceptively simple. Repeating patterns of synthesisers, flutes, dulcimers and exotic doo-dads slide in and out of one another, and the beautiful voices of Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry present complimentary opposites - the tracks on which Perry sings serve to ground Gerrard's swooping operatics with his deep, velvety tones, and the closer "Ulysses" serves as a book-end to almost match "Seraphim" in quality.
If there's one falter here it might be the dense drumming of "Mother Tongue", which is still a very good track, but fills somewhat out of place. But even with this minor quibble, Serpent's Egg is still one of the few albums that I can say without qualms that you must hear.
Eternal Music.......2006-06-09
Into the Labyrinth is really a terrific album, but it's not best. Serpent's Egg is a perfect work. Here, Lisa's voice is just magical. And Perry's music is limitless...

Ambient explorer Roach and percussionist Metcalf originally began this as an experiment into the effects of breathwork and the use of sound on a person "as a shamanic strategy for healing, personal growth, and transformation." The successful effects their music had in group settings were extended into these compositions. While billed as a collaboration between the two men, The Serpent's Lair also features contributions by (deep breath) violinist Vicki Richards, overtone vocalist Jim Cole, pre-Hispanic sound sorcerer Jorge Reyes, singer Lena Stevens, synthesist Vidna Obmana, "groove alchemist" Vir Unis, and djembe players Jeffrey Fayman and Momodu "Mohammad" Kah. The two discs in this package act as yin and yang--the eight parts of the first disc, "The Serpent's Lair," highlight intoxicatingly hypnotic drum rhythms slicing through churning ambient spaces, while the seven cuts that make up the second disc, "Offerings from the Underworld," travel down darker, spacier streams with subtle rhythms, reverberant vocals, and exotic aerophones caressing and riding the ethereal aural waves. This invigorating combination of musicians invents a dynamic new perspective on Roach's trademark deep-listening forays. It would be wonderful to hear more collaborations like this. --Bryan Reesman

YOU WILL BE TRANSFORMED.......2005-02-03
I bought this after reading some positive reviews on Amazon from reviewers I liked. Before buying I was a bit put off by the self-congratulatory reviews on the CD jackets; whenever someone proclaims themselve or allows someone else to proclaim them "genius" you have to wonder if they're more form over function (like Yanni, for example.)
I'm glad I went ahead and purchased this album anyway. This guy Roach is good, real good. He knows how to play with your emotions. CD #1 has more of a rhythmic trance feel (appropriate for entertaining) whereas CD #2 is far more ambient in nature (and downright spooky at times.) It's true what other reviewers write: this is the most evocative music I've ever listened to. Images and scenes will emerge in your mind. In my case, it was the wonderful scene from the movie "All the Right Stuff" where flying ambers from an Aboriginal fire floated upwards and merged with stars an astronuat in space was observing. Don't believe me about the images? Try this: close your eyes and listen to an entire song. When you open them you'll see that you need some time to adjust to your current surroundings because while your eyes were closed you were transported to an entirely different place in your mind's eye.
It wouldn't surprise me if classical minimalist composer Philip Glass has some Roach in his CD rotation. I know I'll definitely be purchasing some more of his music. I'd recommend sticking with Amazon when buying his CD's, because given the large number and differing variety he has out (I understand 3 new ones are planned for this year) you'll be disappointed by the lack of selection at record stores.
Extreme tribal trance (for ambient music).......2003-06-21
Heavy on the tribal and trance sounds mixed with very cutting edge electronic music. A few tracks verge on nightclub electro dance music. Towards the end of cd #2 it gets very tribal on the vocals, not so much on the rhythms and sounds. Although each track is quite different, once the tune gets going, it gets repetitive as if to induce a trance. It's very good to listen to if you are working on a project or even to work out to.
A rich and pleasing experience.......2002-04-09
I never cease to be amazed by the many ways Steve Roach can weave a web. I mean, in how many different directions can one man go with long, ambient, atmospheric pieces almost totally devoid of melody? Evidently, in more ways than I can count.
In collaboration with Byron Metcalf and a host of others, the list of which reads like a veritable Who's Who of prominent ambient musicians, Roach provides a sense of tribal mysticism with those long ethereal passages we've come to associate with his work. THE SERPENT'S LAIR is a rich blend of soothing tones, hypnotic tribal beats and some lovely vocal passages (a rarity in Roach compositions).
Although I am a huge Steve Roach fan, owning most of his CD's -I was hesitant to purchase this Disc; now I'm sorry I waited so long to buy it. My fear was an overemphasis of the percussion aspects of the compositions over the soothing atmospherics and the sense of exploration I associate with his music. (I've been disappointed with these collaborations before, namely with DUST TO DUST, an album that I've never really liked.) I need not have worried - this double CD is rich and complex, and is a brilliant example of Steve Roach's ever evolving talent. In some ways, it reminds me a bit of Michael Stearns THE LOST WORLD, another brilliant work and artist that I highly recommend.
