5 out of 5 stars Great !!!!.......2006-03-29

This is such a cool CD! I had the cassette tape for a long time previously, and I absolutely had to get the CD version. It has a great set of songs, and I know I will have this CD in my collection forever!

I LOVE BOBBBY McFERRIN! The reason...Don't Worry Be Happy! I could listen to it all day every day and not get tired of it. The other tracks are first rate too! So if there ever is a need for a wonderful song, make it Don't Worry Be Happy!

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Rules!.......2005-11-22

I love this album to death... it's one of those albums that brings a smile on my face, picks you up when you're feeling down and engages your senses! How many albums could do that? Bobby is absolutely fantastic and it's just so amazing that all this was done with only the voice - what a joyful and wonderful instrument! This is a fantastic album that you should definitely own. get it and be blown away! I have the vinyl version (I prefer records) and it sounds excellent on my turntable rig at home! An excellent recording.

5 out of 5 stars the best breakthru album from Mr. McFerrin.......2005-05-29

Here's the guy that's best known for his song "Don't Worry Be Happy" which was put out in 1988 is knockin' it down. I enjoyed this since I bought it and own it cassette. Sooner or later I'll pick it up on CD. There's nothing much I had to say 'bout this album 'cuz it's full of alot of remakes I luv from "Good Lovin" from the Rascals, "Drive My Car" from the Beatles, etc. incl. songs written by Bobby McFerrin himself. He's the baddest man no matter he's a singer, scat singer or whatever, he does it all from instruments, humming, singing, doin beats, all of the above you name it. Hope this could be recommended to everybody who's loves the taste of this album or have been a fan to Bobby McFerrin be4.

5 out of 5 stars Still my favourite.......1999-12-08

I was introduced to Michael Hoppe's music with this CD, which I first discovered on the internet and played through my computer. I enjoyed it so much that I immediately went and bought the CD. Since that introduction I have purchased several other CD's of Hoppe's music, but I still like this one the best.

The music is delightfully restful and new. Too bad it is now unavailable. It has already been re-issued once, maybe it will come again.

      Album Description

As the blue smoke clears the nightclub, the voices of countless singers blend into the Chicago night. The singer collects his charts and has the evening's first drink. He pays the band, books another date and wishes that he had sung "My Romance." The singer is Phil Kidder. The club is Pops For Champagne and this CD, "Simple Pleasures" is his recording debut on Southport.

Each artist brings to life's table a collection of emotions, stories and influences. Phil Kidder was born in Chicago on the "rough" side of town. Within the newness of youth he moved from a troubled family to the open clear blue sky plains of the Southwest-New Mexico. Phil got his physical discipline from track and field, competing in the state finals on several occasions. Even though jazz was not a part of his musical youth he would listen to top 40, R&B and country swing bands.

Recently Phil has been working out at America's oldest and only champage bar/nighclub and cabaret-Pops on North Sheffield in Chicago. His Friday after work sets have built a large and local following. "Simple Pleasures", the recording debut for Mr. Kidder traces the many influences that have formed the essence of this life.

This is a gentle record. One singer and two amazing guitarists. Chicago guitar man Dave Onderdonk has many albums and CD's out as both a leader and sideman. You can hear him on his own Southport CD with percussionist/drummer Mark Walker-"Loose Contact" (S-SSD-0019). He can also be heard as part of Blue Note artist Fareed Haque's recent release. Guitarist John Paris, who holds down the amplified guitar role on this CD just released a CD with Chicago vocalist Miss Midori as a part of her Jazz Inquisition ensemble (S-SSD-0058). He is a part of the youthful new generation players that are emerging on the Chicago scene at the end of this century. Band Members: Phil Kidder, Vocals and arrangements; Dave Onderdonk, Acoustic guitar; John Paris, electric guitar.

      5 out of 5 stars Timeless Legendary Duo~Bravo Nancy & Ramsey!!!.......2004-04-19

I had the absolute pleasure of experiencing these classic performers in concert together at Cerritos in 2003. Both are in peak form and Diva Supreme Nancy in her form fitting plum and red gowns rocked the sold-out crowd and looked sensational and sounded very soulful! This great collection was featured in this thrilling concert and for anyone who enjoys the ultimate, do not miss this wonderous release. With any luck this magical musical team will release more but for now, thank you Nancy and Ramsey for making such beautiful music...you are both the greatest...and Nancy Wilson you look and sound gorgeous!!!

      1 out of 5 stars A CATASTROPHE.......2003-12-31

I'm one of Nancy Wilson's biggest fans. The songs in this album, however, do not showcase her talents. The orchestral arrangements are saccharine sweet and Nancy's phrasing choices are bizarre. It's hard to believe this is the same singer who sang definitive versions of standards such as "The Masquerade is Over". Nancy is not a belter and she sings R&B songs that are completely ill-suited to her voice. Her new singing style sounds forced and downright bizarre. I hope her next album (RSVP- Rare Songs, Very Personal) will have better material and better vocal arrangements.

5 out of 5 stars Ashanti could only hope to have a career HALF as long!.......2003-10-26

134 years. That's the combined ages of Lewis (68) and Wilson (66). Each has been a jazz force for over forty years; thus, it's a no-brainer that when they come together for this, their third collaboration, it could be nothing short of perfection.

Backed by a sextet of Henry Johnson (guitar), Alejo Poveda (percussion), Llew Mathews (electric keyboards), Orbert Davis (trumpet), Tracy Kirk (trombone), and Steve Eisen (tenor sax and flute), Lewis and Wilson shine on covers of tunes made popular by others.

War's "Slippin' Into Darkness", DeBarge's "All This Love", Lennon and McCartney's "In My Life", and Billie Holiday's signature classic "God Bless the Child" all get the treatment that only real musicians like Lewis and Wilson can give.

This is 54:35 of such a "simple pleasure" that it can become addictive.

      5 out of 5 stars SUPERB JOB!!.......2003-09-10

Nancy Wilson and Ramsey Lewis did an excellent job recording this timeless music. Miss Wilson's dynamic voice along with Mr. Lewis's smooth piano is a winning combination. They can never go wrong! I won't say a lot about the music; it speaks enntirely for itself! I recommend this album to anyone who loves piano and anyone who loves jazz. This album isn't purely jazz, but anyone who likes jazz will love this album. Also recommended: anything by Nancy Wilson or Natalie Cole

      4 out of 5 stars THEY'RE BACK!!!!.......2003-07-31

Fairly quickly on the heels of last year's Meant To Be, Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson are back with this splendid new release. On Meant to Be, Nancy seemed like a guest on a Ramsey Lewis cd.On this new cd, there is definitely more of a teamwork feel. There are horns on this album and at times you may think you are listening to Tower Of Power in a mellow mood. Four of Nancy's five vocals are superb. The one misstep is a cover of Debarge's All This Love. Nancy rushes through this one , apparently as much in a hurry to be done singing it as we are to be done listening to it. However, all of Nancy's other cuts are outstanding. Kenny Rankin's Lost Up in Loving You is given a thoughtful, loving rendition. In the Name Of Love, a Ralph McDonald tune from the early'70's(I believe) features Nancy at her icy yet sexy best. The two absolute KILLER cuts are Give Me Something Real and God Bless the Child. Give Me... has Nancy growlin'and just a hollerin' up a storm. Subtle no, but leap out of your seat while shouting"Go Nancy" is a probable reaction to this blistering cut. I approached God Bless the Child with a little fear. Would Nancy over embilish? No, this is a lovely take on this most famous Billie Holiday classic. Ramsey's playing is equally sensitive, this cut really is a duet. It is great to hear Nancy sounding terrific, taking chances and being the ultimate diva once again. Ramsey' selections with his trio are equally effective, a mix of late '60's classics, In My Life and Ooh Child and lesser known tunes. The final cut Gentle Persuasion is a Ramsey original and is the perfect way to end this sumptuous set. I really am giving this 4 1/2 stars, but that doesn't seem to be an option.

Sanfi4u is completely off base with the review he/she provided! You want to know about the CD and its greatness, scroll down to Johnny Norris' review. Now that is an accurate depiction of Paul's overlooked talent.

4 out of 5 stars Now THIS is music.......2003-01-20

I'm very disappointed in what's happened to mainstream music these days, so I have been looking for CDs by artists I've always liked. "Firebird" did not let me down! I've always loved Pauls' natural style and was happy that he stuck with it, although I admit to being surprisingly pleased by the jazzy "Don't Stop the Carnival", which he pulled off well (one of my favorites on the album) and one I could see someone like Jimmy Buffett doing as well.

My very favorite was the Rusty Young-penned (and accompanied) "Across a Painted Sky". I could picture this gem on the outstanding Poco album "Rose of Cimmaron".

Other favorites are "There's a River", "Not Out of Mind" and "Do What You Do". While I don't personally see the other cuts as that strong, there's nothing here I disliked.

My main beef is with the production quality. It could have used a bit of "punch" in my opinion, and it's a bit muddy (too much midrange). The individual instruments blur in parts, and the vocals should have been crisper and more upfront.

I would have also liked to have heard MUCH more of Paul's guitar work, especially in those blistering/soulful song endings he was noted for with Poco. Some songs ended too soon and too weakly for me. But then, I'm, a huge fan of Paul's guitar work, which I don't think is as appreciated at large as it should be.

Overall, I was glad to make this acquisition and I love listening to "Firebird". I hope to get "Cantamos" soon, and also hope Paul puts out much more work.

3 out of 5 stars A decent record for POCO fans.......2002-05-04

I was attracted to this record by positive reviews I found here. And, although I failed to find sound samples at the web, I decided to order myself a copy. I was quite surprised with what I've heard on this CD. I found there nothing special to talk about. May be, except "Not out of mind" and "All the way to you" Instrumental. They both are quite good. I expected much more after reading other people's comments. Moreover Paul sings slightly out of tune at times which especially detracts me from this CD.

Please, don't get me wrong. It's a decent country rock music. But there are so many good recordings around and life is too short to listen to any music available. To be fair I need to mention I don't like most of POCO music. I think it's a kind of boring. But I love POCO S/T 1970 (excellent record!) and Crazy Eyes, 1973. Buy them if you didn't do it yet. If you feel the same about these records you may also like to get yourself Timothy B. Schmit latest CD "Feed the fire". Great music and performance!

... if you are POCO/Paul Cotton die hard fan, may be this is a record for you. Otherwise look elsewhere. IMO, Eagles stuff (including some solo recordings) is a good alternative.

4 out of 5 stars nearly good as poco.......2002-02-10

I just happen to fine this by looking to see if poco was still around what a find if poco can come up with a new cd this good we will be lucky if you like poco you will like this too

        5 out of 5 stars Firebird.......2002-01-21

This CD rocks-when I first got it I played it for days. I saw Poco in Grand Junction CO in July 2001-they played alot of songs from this CD. I am a old Poco fan-saw them when I was 13 at the Fillmore East-in the Village before it closed, & saw them many times in concert as a teenager etc. Their music is tight & its timeless-Paul is an excellent guitar player & seeing him play one knows he just has that knack. I am looking foward to his next CD/-Firebird is well worth the listen.

4 out of 5 stars Simple Pleasures lives up to its name.......2004-03-02

This was one of the first CD's that I purchased from the Unison/Jazz Cafe series. The first tune has a bit of a Art Poter-esque/Dave Koz-ish vibe, and the last one has a Ralf Illenberger-ish/Acoustic Alchemy/Miles Davis-like vibe to it as well. The second one-in my opinion reminds me of a Joyce Cooling/Al Di Meola mix. I definitely smell a hint on Jazz Fusion on that one. It's been a while since I last played it, but every time I do play it, those simple pleasures in life (which we so often take for granted, or worse yet, overdo 'em) come to mind. Seen and heard-the album's last track-is the one that will either put you in the kind of trance that keeps you focused with a capital 'F', or just fast foward what's left of the mood that you're in for the day and just fade off to your own view of euphoria......either way, you won't be dissapointed.

          Album Description

Zen Cappuccino serves up slice-of-life observations, fantastic worlds, children's campfire stories, travels around the world, and an occasional stop at the library along the way. Upbeat and positive with an occasional dash of danger and excitement, singer/songwriter Andrea Dale's second CD release encompasses arrangements from simple and quiet to active, intertwined, and just a little bit demented.

5 out of 5 stars Zen Cappuccino - warming, frothy, sweet, and strong.......2004-01-24

For me listening to Zen Cappuccino is like visiting Andrea at home - pull up a chair - make yourself comfortable, put the kettle on. What i like best - a genuine communication from an artist. But it's not all homespun songs - there's a wide variety of goodies in Andrea's kitchen. Thoughtful songs, magical, heartfelt, funny and a lot of interesting arrangements with bodhrans, trumpet, djembe, doubek a blugrass band, accordian, flute, sax, organ etc as well as Andrea's lovely voice and guitar. A strong crew of players too Dave Clement and Tom Jeffers from Dandelion Wine, Scott Snyder and Clan, Debbie Ridpath Ohi from Urban Tapestry, Bill Sutton, Brenda Sutton (from the Weird Sisters) - and these are just the guys I've heard of... What I like about Andrea's voice is that it is a voice of character - not just a sweet folky-girl voice - and consequently it has a wide range of expression. I immediately fell in love with Mustang's Freedom and play that song a lot - such a breezyness and carefree vibe. My other favourite is Bewitching Hour which has a strong magical feel to it. Hatchet Hand Harry has to be mentioned as it's a great tale of invented boogie man at camp - Andrea's "uh oh" is so well timed it makes me laugh out loud every time... My favourite songs are those penned by Andrea herself, which is most of them, but she also has chosen songs wisely too - interesting to hear a different version of Debbie Ridpath Ohi's (from Urban Tapestry) Homecoming with interesting harmonising trumpets arrangement. A more balanced and better produced album than her great debut A Step Out of Time - on that album you got the feeling she was still trying things out - on Zen Cappuccino you have a warm communication from a seasoned performer bringing her varying skills, with light and shade, to make a satisfying whole album. What are you still reading this for? Go buy it !
