Portrait of the Goddess: Musical Mythology

Editorial Reviews

Vocalist and composer Celeste Alayne presents Portrait of the Goddess as 10 songs, revealing the face of the goddess in her many guises through musical stories. Alayne's vocals are a nice medium-weight second soprano, which serves these ethnic-influenced songs well. Within the structure of heavily synthesized New Age pop, the pieces are fleshed out with Celtic, Asian, and Native American stylings, though they never attempt to be full-blown "traditional." Likely to appeal to pagan and wiccan communities, Portrait of the Goddess is Earth-centered and feminine in energy and will happily round out collections that already include Putumayo's Women of Spirit and Gary Stadler's Fairy series of recordings. --Paige La Grone

3 out of 5 stars I did not care for it........2007-01-10

The music is pretty but I like a CD to set a mood and this one was just too esoteric for my tastes

5 out of 5 stars Oh My Goddess!.......2004-07-24

Absolutely divine!! I find myself playing this CD over and over. I have a lot of Pagan and New Age music, but Celeste's praise to the Goddess is unlike anything I've listened to. The songs and chants are haunting and give me chills. Celeste's voice is beautiful. I anxiously await another CD from her!

5 out of 5 stars great music.......2002-12-07

I loved this cd! Her work is unusual and beautiful, and her voice is pretty. Gaia is a great song, and I loved Isis too, but all are good. She really sounds joyful and praises the Goddess in her songs. I wish she would put out another cd!!!

5 out of 5 stars A stunning collection........2002-10-14

I have purchased music related to the Goddess that turned out to be quite amateurish, so it was such a pleasant surprise to find this top quality CD from a singer with a truly lovely voice and truly inspired ideas about presenting songs. It is so wonderful how the music evokes the culture of the country or region which is the "home" of each Goddess, and how the artist changes her singing style to evoke that culture. My favorite is the hypnotic "Isis," which is so sinuous and exotic, I can't listen to it enough. Each song is a completely different experience, helping you travel the world and understand how truly multicultural, global, and all-embracing the Goddess is. What a truly wonderful musical achievement.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!.......2002-09-21

With the execption of number 9, every song was absolutely wonderful. None of them sounded the same, which was a refreshing change. Morgan Le Fay is one of my favorites. It tells a story about her in a beautiful manner. The music on all of the selections is just absoultely fabulous, from the slower songs like Gaia, to the more chant-like songs like White Tara. Isis has a sound all its own, and is enchanting in its own way. Celeste's voice is just perfect for these songs, which allows for enduring quality to be created. You'll be singing these songs long after you hear it, even after just one time!! This CD is perfect to listen to anytime, and only gets better every time one hears it!
This is a great CD to start out with whether it's for goddess chants or for some truly wonderful music.
