About the Artist
John Mock is an accomplished classical guitarist, mandolinist, and a master with recorders and whistles. He performs regularly with Kathy Mattea, Nanci Griffith, Maura O'Connell, and the Nashville Mandolin Ensemble. John recorded with Mark O'Connor, James Taylor, Yo-yo Ma, and Wynton Marsalis for Mark O'Conner's Liberty soundtrack, a PBS special documenting the Revolutionary War.

This CD features the score Vaughan Williams wrote for the 1941 British film 49th Parallel. The music is a series of musical portraits of various parts of the film. The film itself was an effort to bring to the United States the story of how Canada was helping the British war effort. The hope was that the United States would soon become an ally of Great Britain in its war against the Nazi's. While the music for the film has been preserved, there is no current DVD copy of the film for region 1. Turner Classic Movies shows the film from time to time.

Ralph Vaughan Williams' film scores are outstanding. What images he created when you listen to CD. I found this CD in a used bin. I was really surprised. I no longer have to wait to hear them on public radio!

      Album Description

      Right Now is the sixth solo album from award-winning contemporary folk singer-songwriter Terry Kitchen. While all acoustic based, the album incorporates sounds and song forms from country, bluegrass, rock, Brazilian, traditional folk, and street corner doo-wop, reflecting both Terry's growth as a songwriter and his willingness to take risks as an artist.

      While his three previous albums were thematic (1999's blues for cain & abel, spirituality; 1997's blanket, family; 1995's I Own This Town, teenage independence), Right Now is an unbound collection of songs, and Kitchen uses the freedom to explore character and mood in new ways, from the tornado survivor of “Today I'm Gonna Laugh” to the sullen teen of “Tomorrowland,” from the lush harmonics of “Rain on the Roof” to the stark melody of “Bonny Lights of Cavendish.” Right Now also includes songs written for specific causes - “Garden in the City” (community gardening), “Peter Pan” (drunk driving), “Billy” (gay rights).

      The title song “Right Now” won the Grand Prize of the 2000 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest, First Prize in the 2000 USA Songwriting Competition, and was Runner Up in the 2000 John Lennon Songwriting Contest. “Inside” has also been covered by country singer Dale Allaire.

      On Right Now Kitchen's distinctive, gentle baritone and supple guitar playing are backed by some of New England's finest musicians, including John McGann (mandolin, Wayfaring Strangers), Seth Connelly (bass, Dobro), Alizon Lissance (keyboards, Lovedogs), Larry Finn (drums), Tim Obetz (pedal steel), and Brice Buchanan (lead guitar, from Terry's '80s rock band Loose Ties).

      At over 60 minutes of playing time, Right Now is an expansive, multi-faceted album that may take a few listens to digest. But all those facets reflect Terry Kitchen - Right Now.

      This is a must-have album. Why is this not available? You have Copland, Ives, Gould, Herrmann, Moross and others. These are great American composers. I have never seen such a well rounded and representive body of works from so many great Americans. Go out and find a copy of this one. It's great!

      4 out of 5 stars More Celtia than New England.......2006-04-21

      This album conjures visions of Celtic lands rather than musical impressions of New England. Sure, the Irish and the Scots migrated to the upper eastern coasts of North America and so their music still echoes there, but rather than evoking the eclectic musical mix that came to be distinctly Americana, this music wafts from a different shore. Heavy on the squeezebox, most likely you'll imagine Irish bands and pubs before you'll imagine Ol' Nick the Sea Captain or Old Cape Cod. Well-crafted, but not what I expected. I do like this CD. It's just that I'll most likely play it when I'm in a lively Celtic mood and ready to dance the Maypole; not when I'm cooking New England clam chowder or steaming lobster and dreaming of buoys bobbing peacefully in the bay.
