About the Artist
Renowned naturalist and sound designer Dr. Bernie Krause has traveled the world capturing the soundscapes of exotic natural environments. Dr. Krause began his groundbreaking work in bioacoustics and environmental recording in the late 1960's, and much of his work has been accomplished with techniques and technologies that he personally developed. His "In A Wild Sanctuary" (1970) recording earned a place in history as being the first recording to use environmental sounds as both a central component of orchestration and as a statement about the environment.
Dr. Krause's diverse achievements include 10 recordings for The Nature Company that have enjoyed over $24 million in gross sales over a period of 6 years. Development of the audio technology innovation known as the Intelligent Show System (for public exhibitions and installations), and his Music and Word Series of spoken word documents that include "Ishi - The Last Yahi." Dr. Krause recently published the book "Wild Soundscapes" (2002) that includes a full-length CD featuring a sampling of natural sounds.
Product Description
The first cut, recorded in the Adirondacks by Ruth Happel, expresses an evening biophony characteristic of an Eastern U. S. soundscape after night-fall. Compare the cricket rhythms, textures, and sonorities with those recorded in the West by Bernie Krause in the Cascade Mountains of Northern California. Many think of evening sounds in a generalized way. Yet, careful listening tells a very different story. This recording is a perfect example of biophonies that reveal a sense of place beyond the typical visual experiences humans normally encounter. The eastern evening biophony recorded by Happel (Cut 1) represents a particular spot whose voice can be heard nowhere else on the planet. The cricket orchestra defines it in much the same way one can discern the difference between the music of Bach and that of the Beatles. Likewise, the Krause recording (Cut 2), is a perfect definition of that particular territory, replete with bullfrogs and an occasional distant great! -horned owl. Yet, both cuts evoke a clear sense of time - an evening special to those creatures, human and non-human, alike, who occupy the same respective habitats.

Plucked from a wet afternoon of busking Bizet and Puccini to passersby on the Piazza in Covent Garden in the spring of 2001, soprano Rebecca Knight and mezzo Karen England soon found themselves singing in slightly larger venues: the FA Cup and Champions League soccer finals. That the management company doing the plucking had recently performed a similar Cinderella crossover act for Russell Watson offered portent, and indeed the Babes--the moniker began as a joke--were soon on their way to this recording debut. The marketing shtick and its soccer connections may offend purists, but it's the football hooligans that the Babes are trying to win over here; can Borodin soothe the savage Manchester United fan? Their classically trained voices mesh gloriously, with England's warm mezzo showing particular character in her solo turns. The repertoire choices here cover material that may already be familiar to fans of Charlotte Church (i.e., Delibes "Flower Duet") and other crossover acts, but they do include some pleasant surprises, like Offenbach's Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann and "You Live On in My Heart," a reworking of Ennio Morricone's enchanting Cinema Paradiso theme with lyrics by Knight. But in a rush toward the musical middle of the road, it's the productions themselves that sometimes overwhelm the Babes with bathos ("Ave Maria"), hollow thunder ("Aida 2002"), and electro club kitsch (the 'Vibe Tribe' mix of "Flower Duet"). Former Art of Noise mainstay Anne Dudley's tastefully restrained coloring of Tchaikovsky's "1001 Nights" is one of the notable exceptions. They're babes, they sing opera--with fair promise--for the masses, and if they turn one in a hundred from football hooliganism to a well-mannered appreciation of Grieg and Dvorák, won't it all have been worth it? --Jerry McCulley

Album Description
Around the time of the summer solstice each year, insects and nighttime birds create a biophony (orchestral sound of living organisms vocalizing together in the same habitat) that is unique to each environment. Ruth Happel, who lives in the eastern United States, recorded half of the album in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York State. I recorded my segment near Mt. Lassen, not far from the Oregon-Nevada borders. From my field notes: 'I'll never forget the time a major Hollywood film company hired me to go to Iowa to record corn growing.I sat for hours in the middle of a mosquito-ridden field one hot August night waiting for some kind of sound other than the crickets and frogs, when suddenly the stalks all around me burst into life squeeking and popping as they telescoped in length one or two inches while I sat there recording. I crickets and bullfrogs of Lassen reminded me of that bizarre but wonderful evening so very long ago.
