Fires
Editorial Reviews

New York-based, post-rock boogie band Ui clearly have good ideas, but lackluster execution, like Tortoise with sprained hands or lesser record collections. London-based Stereolab, on the other hand, are peerlessly interesting, always pushing the limits of their lush, gurgly-churgly, melodic, joyous sound. One of the ways Stereolab do this is by pretending they have peers: releasing tons of arcane discs by others on their own Duophonic label and inviting the most challenging electronic musicians to destroy their songs for remix records. On Fires, Stereolab and Ui--née Uilab--collaborate well, performing two pleasant, vaguely meandering originals. Then they put together and take apart one of Eno's finest rock songs, "St. Elmo's Fire"--four times, no less. It's way more fascinating than it deserves to be. --Mike McGonigal

I need more stars than five! Ten probably..........2007-06-05
Great music. I love it! Ritchie plays wonderful, Candice Night, his wife, uses her beautiful voice perfectly. Her voice matches specially well with Ritchie's medieval music... Yes. He plays now less Hard Rock and more the mix of folk-medieval-rock! Deep Purple, Rainbow and Blackmore's Night, those names are 'Made by Ritchie', and all of them give us music pure! But Blackmore's Night is special, very special. Listen to it and allow you to get carried away by the sound of this CD!
Come gather round people wherever you roam............2006-09-14
"Village in the Sand" is a classic. A powerful mix of some good ol' riff-rock and ren. Not far behind are "Home Again" and "Written in the Stars".
As good as the aforementioned tracks are, "All Because of You" is pure cr*p. Mindless fluff. Should read "I-Have-a-Career-All-Because-of-You". Leave it home next time. Stick to cuts like the title track and "Mid-Winters Night".
And also lay off the Dylan classics. You're treading on sacred ground here.....
Their best so far along with "Ghost of a Rose".......2006-01-17
"Shadow of the Moon" showed Ritchie Blackmore as a grown up, very mature musician, moving ahead to new horizons, which , surprisingly to many, more logical to others, were to be found in more traditional sources , that were actualy always Ritchie's wellsprings of inspiration since his very earliest years. "Under a violet moon" showed the same genre with a darker colour, and a more explicit "Wiccan" imagery, just in case you didn't get it at first. "Fires at Midnight" shows Ritchie and Candace perfectly synchronized in every level, harmoniously blending Ritchie's solid music-making with Candace's lyrical inspiration and her beautiful vocals. For those who could follow Master Blackmore through his methamorphosis , there's a reward here in the form of some good hard riffs, though entirely consistent with the music they are now making.Although by now, those Blackmore fans who never got over "Smoke on the Water" and want to live perpetually like Beavis and Butthead have long ago run scared with the Master's new output.
Again, the album opens with a solid tune performed masterfully , in order to catch your attention. "Times are a-changing" is in my opinion their most successful cover; I preffer it to Bob Dylan's own original, and I enjoy it better than Peter, Paul and Mary's (though PPM's is possibly the best "first choice" for this song). "Home Again" is another example of something they do very often ; a song that at first sounds naive and childlike, but it's really a very well-crafted song.A great sing-along for a bonfire gathering."Crowning of the King" features beautiful horns in late-medieval / early renaissance style, like those used in "Clock ticks on" from their first album. Then comes a soothing guitar solo by Master Blackmore."Fires at Midnight" is possibly the single best song by Blackmore's Night;good lyrics rounded by cleverly built music that starts slowly, evolves into a more energetic tempo to close in an earth-shattering climax, plus a classic Blackmore solo. Some other folksy pieces follow. By now you should not be surprised to hear Ritchie Blackmore doing a beautiful love song...... but if I think "Fires at Midnight" is the best accomplished Blackmore's Night song, "All because of you" is one of the most catchy and bright love songs in a long, long time. This could be broadcasted by commercial radio and outdo "My heart will go on" or "I will always love you" .... if only they knew better."Waiting just for you" comes next in the same fashion as a warm love song, but it doesn't feel like a cheesy reprise. The song is built over a genuine renaissance tune, but I don't know which one it is."Again Someday" is a clever metaphor playing with double meaning ; it's both a love song and an Autumn farewell to the Sun (it's really not that difficult to find out; didn't any of you notice?)My copy includes "For the sake of song" as a closing song , but it is not listed. I your copy doesn't include it, you MUST try the imports, since it does not occur in any compilation, and it's a song not to be missed.
Like I said in my review title, I think this , along with their next album "Ghost of a Rose", is their best work to date.
I want to make a last remark. A clever teenage reviewer (who luckily has found out there's better music to listen to than Britney Spears)says about "Shadow of the Moon" that at first he had to hide it from his mom to prevent her from getting crazy over him hearing "satanic" music, and now he has to hide it from his mom ..... so she doesn't play it herself !!! Well ; I'm a practising Christian myself, and I never had any doubts about the more than obvious sources of inspiration behind Candace Night's beautiful lyrics, but beyond that, Blackmore's Night makes truly beautiful music with warm and kind lyrics, always with positive connotation (even the seemingly "darker" ones), and Candace has a truly pleasant and musical voice.Thinking of those (luckily few) reviewers who have described her voice as "bland" adn similar things, this makes me think of Karen Carpenter;she sang so beautifuly, yet her songs were so seemingly uncomplicated, that we simply took her charm for granted, yet when she passed away we were left with a void that has proved impossible to fill again. Blackmore's Night is not simply background music (although it can be used that way); it's quality music performed masterfully ,to spend quality time, either by yourself, or shared with your grandparents, your parents....your beloved one.....or your children. Some of the best music of any genre made these days.
Fabulous and enchanting!.......2005-12-16
Fires At Midnight really struck me with an inspiring sensation. I love this CD and all the others that Blackmore's Night has graced this world with. A wonderful masterpiece for any lover of Blackmore's Night.
FIRES @ MIDNITE = CRAP.......2004-12-09
I enjoyed the departure from reality Ritchie took with Shadow of the Moon. Some of the most beautiful instrumental guitar music I've ever heard is on this album. I then got Under a Violet Moon and was majorly disappointed that there wasn't more instrumentals, but I can honestly say I liked 3 of the songs. Then this, this abomination came along. I thought long and hard about buying it--had major reservations; but to my sorrow, I had a brain fart and in a fit of hopeful spazmosity, bought the thing.
Candace Night has a pleasant voice, but she is not the vocal equivalent of Ritchie Blackmore's guitar playing. I doubt a female equivalent exists, with the faint possibility of either Lorena McKennitt or Enya. This album, however, is the Candace Night Show, with only a brief supporting role by Ritchie Blackmore. I didn't pay $18 to listen to Candace stroke herself, I was hoping for more of Blackmore's incredible guitar virtuosity. The tunes are sappy and so cloyingly sweet you almost expect to have to wipe off your CD after you remove it from the player. There are no moments of brilliance and darn few moments of non-mediocrity. I could only listen to this album twice before relegating it to the 'buy back' pile, if I can find a sap willing to take this steaming turd off my hands. I will never buy another Blackmore's Night CD and probably won't go see them even if they ever do make it to the West Coast (unless it's a really cool venue and the tix are super cheap). I'd give this a -5 stars, if I could.

Re-issue on 14th floor recordings. Nerina Pallot is a phenomenon. Her Classical music training belies her background and her influences. Fires kicks off with the song 'Everybody's Gone To War', a hugely successful revival of the protest song with one of the most killer choruses you are likey to hear. Fires was produced by Howard Willing (Smashing Pumpkins) with Wendy Melvoin (Prince and the Revolution, Wendy and Lisa) and Eric Rosse (Tori Amos). Idaho Records. 2006.

Customer Reviews:
Fires is terrific, and a thoroughly-rewarding purchase.......2007-07-29
I love this album!
It is a wonderful singer-songwriter album released in about 2005 that showcases the lovely voice of British artist Nerina Pallot. In 11 memorable songs she creates a tuneful and intelligent soundscape of accessible yet somewhat intriguing pieces. This is certainly much better than most other pop and rock CDs out there in the shops at the moment.
Best songs :
Everybody's Gone To War - This is rock/pop music at its best and punchiest.
Sophia - I love this song. Just beautiful singing and an excellent, poetic composition. My favourite song on the album.
Mr. King - A personal-sounding anecdote and a memorable "quiet" song.
Halfway Home - Reminds me a bit of a catchy radio ballad with strong choruses, but very good lyrics.
Damascus - This slow song features excellent lyrics and it is another fine vocal performance by Nerina, whose vocal abilities shine on this and the other more gentle songs.
All Good People - This very-catchy rocker made an immediate impact with me and was on my CD player on high rotation for the first week !
Overall, Fires is terrific, and a thoroughly-rewarding purchase. I was especially happy with it because I only previously knew one of its songs, and took a punt on the rest of the album being as good as the single cut Everybody's Gone To War.
Highly Recommended album.

Nerina Pallot's Music.......2007-03-08
Nerina is an awesome artist. This CD is definitely worth picking up. She needs airplay in the U.S. and our help to do it. I highly recommend this CD be in everyone's collection.
Everybody Should be Listening to Nerina Pallot.......2007-01-28
If you haven't heard of Nerina Pallot, I don't know where you have been. She has had so much media hype and 5 star reviews in all the right places. And for once, the hype can be believed! "Fires" is incredibly good, incredibly strong and you won't be able to get enough of this album. Nerina plays the guitar and piano on the album as well as writing all the songs. She has a crystal clear voice with a great range, which adds oodles of flavor to the album. Her song "Everybody's Gone To War" is simply outstanding. I think we will be hearing much more from Nerina in the future and I thing this is an album well worth owning.
Fantastic.......2006-11-02
Only heard of Nina a couple of weeks ago when EGTW was mentioned as being #1 in a writer's playlist in a USA Today article.
Ordered this album from Amazon and have been playing it constantly ever since. Damascus is my favorite song. Really shows off her beautiful voice and great tune.
I've seen her called "the new Carol King" and that drew me to her because I'm a long time Carol fan, but I would say she is more similar to Sarah MacLachlan and Tori Amos.
EDIT:
After listening to this for the past few weeks, I've become more and more enamored of Nerina's beautiful music.
Damascus I listen to over and over. When I finally decide to go to the next track I get stuck on repeating Idaho for awhile. I think these two songs could really win Nerina some US fans and would promote those for US radio listening.
For deeper cuts I would add
Learning to Breathe
Geek Love
All Good People
and Halfway Home
I would avoid pushing Everybody's Gone To War. Why get in the middle of political squabbles as a newly introducted artist. Let fans discover it on their own.
Songs like Mr. King grow on me the more I hear them. Not a weak song on the entire album. One of the strongest albums I've heard in awhile. Nerina's voice is like another instrument and reminds me of Dave Matthews in that regard. I find myself listening to their voices for months before I ever get curious enough to see what the actual words to the song are. Then I find a deeper appreciation of the interesting, emotional lyrics.
If you're a serious modern rock/alternative music fan. Don't miss listening to this album at least once!
good stuff.......2006-01-03
Smart lass, good voice, great melodies. Groovy album.

A very good CD to buy.......2005-07-06
I have bought many CD regarding American patriotic songs but it is the one that I prefer. The songs are sung in a very classic way and so, there are easy to listen. Jon English as a tenor gives an excellent performance. On the piano, Rob Carriker gives also an excellent performance; he does not try to cover the voice of Jon English but just to support his voice. So, Jon English and Rob Carriker form a very fine duo and the quality of recording is excellent. The choice of songs is also excellent. I strongly recommend this CD.
What an Excellent Work of Art!.......2002-08-30
John English has a booming and resounding voice. Well suited for the rough and tough songs of our countries historic wars. It is an excellent buy, and I recommend it to any fans of great songs and American historics!
Excellent!.......2002-08-30
This cd is excellent! I reccomend it to everyone!! Jonathon English has got an amazing voice!

I have to admit - I didn't know what I'd be getting when I bought this album. I love Americana and have known some of these songs all my life: K-K-K-Katy, Keep the Home-Fires Burning, and Tenting on the Old Camp Ground. Others that are listed I had never heard before: The Soldier's Tear, When Alexander Takes His Ragtime Band to France, and the very funny Captain Jinks! From first to last I found this CD a joy to hear. Jon English has a beautiful voice, and he sings with such clarity that you can understand every word! There are songs that will get your feet taping, and others that will bring a tear to your eye. The chorus is quite obviously not a professional choir, and that's all the better! They sing with an infectious energy and spirit that'll make you want to sing along. Add into that the horns, flute and percussion and this album becomes very pleasant experience. This is one of the best CD's I've heard in a long time, and I heartily recommend it.

Lives up to thier last album.......2007-01-22
CHL is an amazing band whose sound I can't get enough of. Their mellow, melodic style draws you in more and more each listen and their lyrics leave you in awe that anyone could write something this good. Hands down, CHL is one of the best around!
One of my all-time favorite cd's.......2006-05-08
There are so many good things to say about this cd. Every song strikes a chord with me as a Christian who struggles to see God within the "fires of life". Though it has such a mellow feel to it and it's basically impossible to get your adrenaline pumping to, its mellow harmonies are deep and meaningful. I know every song by heart and will always list it in my top ten cd's of all.
Cool Hand Luke- The fires of Life.......2006-02-24
Great music and awesome lyrics. I highly recommend it!!
Excellent band.......2005-11-02
Let it be known that this is Cool Hand Luke's 4th release (counting the independent release "I Fought Against Myself", and the excellent "So Far" ep).
"Rest For the Weary" is without a doubt the best song the band ever made, and thankfully it is on this album. It is originally off of a 7" vinyl sold at their concerts, and I'm a proud owner of an autographed one.
The lyrics and inspired and uplifting and the indie prog feel is unmatched. These guys truely are amazing. Unfortunately they broke up, but a friend who spoke with lead singer/drummer Mark Nicks says the band may regroup for one more album (but no tour). I hope the rumors are true! Another Cool Hand Luke release would be nice.
So give these guys a listen for some excellent, excellent music.
Amazing!!!.......2005-04-16
Can you say amazing? That is what this band does best. Cool Hand Luke has incredible lyrics and music the goes oh so well with it. From the beautifully crafted song of "Cinimatic" to the closing song of "The Fires of Life". All the songs are done well. I can't wait for more releases form CHL. Check them out!

Masterpiece. 1 of 4. Completely unique band. Saw 'em live 4 times........2006-03-01
Missed 'em live about 3 other times. Lemme tell you a story. Maybe not?
However, this album, we can call it that, packed with lots 'o songs but not lasting very long. Yes, they recreated the album in their own form.
This is their second album, came out 1983.
What's their four masterpieces? Punch line 1981, this one, Buzz Howl... 1983 and Double Nickles 2xLP 1984. Feel free to include My First Bells if you like, a compilation tape of their early 7" records and compilation tracks.
Can't really include Politics of Time, 1984 cuz there's too many poorly recorded songs on it. Same reason for Ballot Result. Musically both are brilliant however.
Mersh I wouldn't include cuz they sorta go a different path musically but, heck, it's still the MINUTEMEN.
Thank goodness amazon.com has those 'listen' buttons for most of the records they sell. Just let the music speak for itself man. Nobody made music like this. God took d. boon too soon from us and it was as big a blow as taking Jimi and Belushi too soon. God bless d. boon.
Meanwhile, buy this as is or on one of those 3 Post Mersh CD's released together with other MINUTEMEN records on one CD. You cannot go wrong.
Brief, passionate, bit 'o funky, beautiful voice(s), sharp drumming. That incredible bass playing and together a 3 man unit that sailed through songs and gave us a gift that will stand the ages. Well.
Ok, if you wanna know, I wish I'd seen 'em more times but I saw that Mojave Desert show in the broad flat middle of nowhere salt flats with SAVAGE REPUBLIC. Four bus loads of us. Generators and two passionate bands and us and lots of nowhere. In the afternoon.
And the San Pedro Bay show just on a boat with the MEAT PUPPETS and about 50 other folks who loved either or both bands sitting a few boat lengths away from the dock on a Wednesday night. Outdoors, on a clear night on the water. Lovely.
And when 100 FLOWERS called it quits at Al's Bar in L.A. d. boon and Keith Morris both got on stage to sing with 100 FLOWERS at the end of their set. MINUTEMEN raged.
And with MEAT PUPPETS opening then MINUTEMEN then HUSKER DU in San Diego on El Cajon Blvd. in a place I'd never seen a gig be at before nor since, like a place with a stage and it said it was a recording studio but no equipment around. You can imagine, the three together made for a very memorable show.
They played with an SST line up all of whom I loathed (musically) like DINASOUR JR. so I stupidly listened to the MINUTEMEN's set from the back alley. Yup. Big dope.
I forget if I saw 'em an actual fourth time.
Missed 'em in Tijuana. Giant 12 band show in a movie theatre. SOLUCION MORTAL opened at 3pm. Only Mexican band. Then some incredible Tucson acid rockabilly band. And like more bands just kept getting added. Excene and John Doe did a set maybe a stripped down KNITTERS. CICRLE JERKS and the MINUTMEN were both there hangin' out. But midnight came along and the cops simply shut the show down even though I didn't see any trouble anywhere. Everyone simply went home without the two headliners ever playing.
Me and my second BCT (Bad Compilation Tapes/Borderless Countries Tapes) partner, Chris, were visiting Bruce Licher of SAVAGE REPUBLIC in L.A. and he told us the MINUTEMEN were playing down the way. Chris had a girlfriend who he said would frown on him getting back to San Diego late. Yup. Lost chance.
Thanks MINUTEMEN. chrisbct@hotmail.com
their most original and best, though too weird, early, and short to be remembered.......2005-11-10
This is a very scratchy and dark album by minutemen. Double nickels is everyone quoted favorite, but this is their best. Mersh is energetic and sweet, double nickels is them having fun. This is very dark, angry and jazz inflected, by far their most original.
So short, so brilliant, so totally unique. Has anyone made music quite like this since? Many have tried.
I saw minutemen in high school about 3 months before D Boon died, 1985. They opened up for REM, when REM were so incredible, but my memory is fuzzy of early high school, so many soon-to-be legendary shows every month.
How lucky that one of the early bands I was into, would turn out to be one of the best of all time. Kind of like enjoying the work of a few local painters that pretty much you and your friends are the only ones that even have heard of them, and later they turn out to be Monet and Renoir.
When punk became post-punk?.......2002-01-31
"What Makes a Man Start Fires" seems to be a demarcation point: for the Minutemen at least. And, unlike a previous reviewer, I wouldn't use the imagery of an "extended nightmare," as much as a "blissed-out daydream." D. Boone, Mike Watt and George Hurley were talented enough to realize early that hardcore punk had serious limitations. In many senses, this album branches out into territory that "Double Nickels" never touched. I am not sure where this place is, but I can guess that it involves driving old cars down the Pacific Coastline, dreaming about things other than the plight of the working man.

I am not sure where this place is, but I can guess that it involves driving old cars down the Pacific Coastline, dreaming about things other than the plight of the working man.
one of my favorite albums.......2001-08-05
its hard to explain what the minutemen sound like. there pretty origenal. all the songs are breif but prove there point. this record has a lot of experimentation (check out the drums on east wind/faith) these guys do a lot of stuff bands today would never do. songs like mutiny in jonestown and fake contest are brief origenals. i recommend it. this album packs a punch. but get it on vinly. its just more classic that way.

"Let me kiss it and make it better," purrs the X-rated vixen turned mainstream actress as she attempts (on "Control," the first single) to get a rise out of the techno audience. With writing/production from Babble (ex-Thompson Twins), the KLF's Ben Watkins and Mike Edwards of Jesus Jones, the music is sleek, robotic, and primed for clubbers who'll view her as the camp descendant of disco queen Amanda Lear. "Outlaw Lover" is worthy of Mitsou and the serious tone of "Father's Field" tells us not to treat her too lightly. --Jeff Bateman

Talent?.......2007-05-03
For those reviews that say she has talent, please point out where. There's not anybody in this world who could not to the synthesized modulated vocals on this type of garbage, including my golden retriever.
Excellent...in spots.......2007-04-16
Traci Lords is trying really hard to gain a main stream career, and she definetly deserves it. This cd is about half good and half bad. When it's good, it's excellent, when it's bad, it's embarrassing. Too bad the whole cd couldn't have kept up the energy of the first two tracks and satyed away from that awful song "Good And Evil". You deserve a good hard wake up slap for that one Traci!
Don't let her past fool you.......2007-04-01
Don't let her porn past fool you. Traci Lords can hold her own when it comes to the music buisness. 1000 Fires is her debut and an excellent one at that. Control, the first and best track, is a perfect example of techno/rave music. This is easily better than anything Jennifer Lopez and most other Hollywood singers can put out.
EXCELLENT!.......2006-07-22
I HAVE ALREADY BOUGHT THIS CD NUMEROUS TIMES AND BOUGHT IT AGAIN RECENTLY. EACH TIME I BUY IT SOMEONE WOULD WANT TO BORROW IT AND NEVER RETURN IT BECAUSE IT WAS THAT GOOD! ITS A CD THAT NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES YOU LISTEN TO IT, YOU WANT TO LISTEN TO IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN. MY FAVORITE SONG LIKE MANY OTHERS IS "CONTROL". ITS AN EXCELLENT SONG TO WORK OUT TO! "OUTLAW LOVER", "DISTANT LAND" AND "FLY" ARE OTHER FAVORITES!
TRACI LORDS REALLY SHOWS THAT SHE IS NOT AFRAID TO EXPRESS HER FEELINGS AND SHOW OTHERS WHAT SHE HAD GONE THROUGH IN HER PAST.
Hands Down one of the best cd's I ever purchased unlistened........2006-06-05
Back in 1995, when I was a member of BMG or Columbia, I got a cd of the month that intrigued me because of who the singer was: former porn queen Traci Lords (who I knew from her Melrose Place fame). I kept the cd and it was a wise choice! Every song on here is a little gem. It has a Techno vibe that is enjoyable, not annoying. Every song is charming, danceable and 5 stars. The exception is "father's field" while an EXCELLENT song, it's difficult to listen to more than a few times without crying.
My favorites on this cd are: I want you, Control, Say Something, Fly, Fallen Angel and the cheesy Okey Dokey.

Album Description
Transcending the current crop of heavy music imitators, MINSK bleed their tribal conviction with an atmosphere of total psychedelic delirium. Hypnotic percussion thunders beneath thickly layered guitars as synths and samples provide a backdrop for searing melodies and deeply spiritual vocal ruminations. Superbly produced at the Volume Recording Studio by bassist/vocalist Sanford Parker (PELICAN, UNEARTHLY TRANCE), The Ritual Fires of Abandonment is a profound and provocative experience that will have an intense and lasting impact on all who dare approach.

Pummeling towards transcendance.......2007-05-03
I would characterize the style Minsk present here as psychedelic doom metal. I am unfamiliar with Minsk's creatively titled and much-liked debut, so I can not compare this album with that one, but what you find here are long, meandering songs that build to tumultuous crescendi, neo-tribalist drumming, reverb drenched riffage, spacey keyboards, and vocals that occupy an agreeable point of intersection between hardcore, death-doom, and Glen Danzig (at his screamiest). I think some might too quickly tout Minsk's odd stylings as unique, but in actuality they do not stray so far from the path tread earlier by the Australian group Alchemist. I would say, however, that Minsk's version of that sound is superior to Alchemist's Organasm CD and more powerful and metallic (and less groovy) than Austral Alien. (Neurosis is of course a point of comparison, as well, but I think that group retained more of a hardcore influence than you find here.) Overall, Minsk's latest is perhaps the fullest, most well-developed psychedilia-infused doom album I've ever heard.
better then the new neurosis.......2007-04-07
this is definitly one of the best cds to come out of the yeah. They remind me a lot of through silver and blood era neurosis. Fans of neurosis, isis and the like should pick this up. One of the best cds of the year

Timeless!.......2003-09-28
The more I listened to this CD, the more I loved it. Judy's voice is mellow and smooth, and her selection of story-songs is mesmerizing and interesting. I was surprised to learn that this CD was released in 1990, I believe it's a classic. She sings 2 tunes first made popular by others('Air That I Breathe' and 'From a Distance') but gives them her own characteristic stamp. 'Blizzard' and 'Home Before Dark' are my personal favorites.
The Fires of Eden.......2003-03-05
Jonathan Schwartz of Public Radio played the song "The Blizzard" in NYC right before the Blizzard of 2003. The tune is magnificent and a real show of Judy Collins still inspired ability and range. "The Blizzard" is absolutely stunning, and this one work is worth the price of the album.

This collection of Native American music manages to avoid a lot of the problems common in compilations of this type. It lacks the new-age trappings of too much reverb and electronic "nature sounds." It focuses, instead, on contemporary songwriters with modern themes. Featured artists include Gerry Alfred, Robert Mirabal, Quiltman and Joanne Shenandoah, each of whom contribute strong tracks to the set. There are some techno attempts that fall pretty flat, with processed voices of tribal elders (this is supposed to give it a dream effect, I guess) and some hip-hop references that just don't work. But the tranquil beauty of Shenandoah and Quiltman, and the rhythmic groove of Mirabal more than counter the effect. --Louis Gibson
Customer Reviews:
Some really good stuff.......2004-01-31
This is a collection of previously published songs. Some of it is the typical New Agey sacarin from the likes of Walela and Shenandoah. Pee-yoo. Some of it is truly marvelous. Lunar Drive is incredible, awesome, magnificent. I'd never heard of them and now I'm searching for anything else they've written. I feel so lucky to have found Joy Harjo - her work is touching, transcendant, traditional, and deeply meaningful. Songcatchers blew me away. The song by Robert Mirabal is a disappointment - get Indians Indians and hear his best.
A solid collection.......2001-02-03
Most compilations or samplers like this one tend to be spotty at best, with a few good tracks surrounded by a lot of mediocre music. Not so with "Tribal Fires" - every single song is outstanding in its own right, and they actually function together quite well, making this seem like an actual album rather than a collection. Despite the range of styles represented and emotions conveyed here, there is not a downbeat or depressing track on the entire CD. It also offers a good introduction to contemporary Native American music. My personal favorites are the pieces by Jerry Alfred ("Pelly Song"), Joy Harjo ("My House is the Red Earth"), Quiltman ("Crazy Horse") and the Songcatchers ("Neon Sky"). Nevertheless, the entire CD is truly remarkable, I highly recommend it.
Shake up your workday!.......2001-01-11
Osiyo! Tired of that same old, new age "pow-wow the indian boy" type of native american flute music - what I call "Indian Light"? Tribal Fires is Electric with the power of contemporary Native American artists from many traditions, and moves you from one energizing piece to another. You can feel the air move through your eagle feathers as you soar through mountain passes with the heartbeat of the Mother's drum in your ears, only to find yourself stirring the smog between skyscrapers where taxi horns intermingle with ancient chants. Music which honors our ancestors, our nation and our power... this recording will have you bouncing in front of your computer, even late into the afternoon!
