Hundreds of compilation recordings have been thrust on the market in recent years on the theory that classical music makes a nice, non-threatening accompaniment to everything from working out to making love. And here we have one compilation promising to make your baby smarter. It's offensive enough that the music featured on these compilations is spliced up so that the most you hear of any work is a single movement; what's really annoying is the poor quality of so many of the featured performances. So it is some consolation that the artists here include such 20th-century legends as the Cleveland Orchestra under Szell and the Budapest String Quartet with Mieczyslaw Horszowski. Of course if these folks were alive, one can imagine their violent objection to this presentation of their work. --Gwendolyn Freed

5 out of 5 stars Build Baby's Brain through Classics Vol 1.......2006-07-25

I am a true fan of Classical music and this was purchased as a gift for a co-worker who is adopting a child from China. Therefore I did not open it nor listen to it. The recipient is now overseas picking up their daughter so I know they haven't had the opportunity to listen to it. I think it's a great idea, though, and purchased a used set for my Grandson.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful stimulating music for baby.......2006-06-23

I am sorry for the previous review who said that intelligence is hereditary. If that is true, all mankind would have been doomed from the start.

Intelligence is not hereditary, but rather a result of stimulation during infancy and birth. Sure, it isn't a guarantee that your child *will* become a genius if you attempt to educate them from birth, but there is no doubt that real educational stimulation of a young mind is a powerful indicator that the child will be more advanced than the average child.

Music is not just notes played. Music--real music--is everything. Though the music of today will fade, classical music will always be around because it is classic. It fits no matter what era you place it in. There is always a home for it. The artists are timeless just as the beautiful melodies are.

I certainly believe that babies who listen to music will become more familiar with and more easily understand music and instruments. Therefore, they will be quicker of mind. It is just a fact that people who play instruments are usually of higher intelligence.

I don't think that people are destined to be stupid or geniuses. I believe it is a question of environment. I feel I'm a great mother but I haven't done everything I could have been doing to help my son's mind expand as an infant. Now that he is a toddler (18 months) I am teaching him to read and exposing him to the magic of classical music in hopes that it will help mold him and set him apart from the rest.

Minds are trainable. You just have to work at it. This CD compiled of beautiful pieces composed by instrumental geniuses will help you do just that.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest CD!!.......2006-01-17

I received this CD free when I had my first baby and it instantly became my fav cd of all time. I have it on my computer and I had another copy made because I just can not imagine not having it.
And as for the comment that the music has nothing to do with intellingence, you stand alone on that front. Besides, what does it hurt? It's great, soothing music and the babies enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Forget baby, it's mine?.......2005-09-01

I love my child, but the first time I heard this CD, It immediately went from her recorder to mine. I take it practically everywhere I go. I know it's technically "Her" CD, but the selections are so soothing; and you need that type of comfort when stuck in traffic. Honestly, we both enjoy it - and I'm glad someone thought enough to give it as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD--why all the complaints?.......2004-08-30

I'm not sure what people were expecting when they purchased this. For one thing it tells you exactly what is on the CD. Its not a mystery!! If you buy it on amazon it has listed every title on it so I"m not sure about the people who said they were dissapointed because they already own those titles. Obviously you should glance at the list of titles on this CD if you have a large classical collection already. However if you don't already have a classical collection this is by far excellent .I'll be honest and admit I listen to one of the volumes daily regardless of who is in the room. It's marketed for babies but it is really for anyone. There are SO many classical pieces out there. What they have done is to take the best of the best and also the ones that are known to appeal to babies. For some reason many reviewers thing they just took a random sampling of classical music. In reality they have put together those that appeal most to children. I can tell you that my 1 year old daughter actually dances to these. She really likes them a lot. I consider the whole collection a must have for any household.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent interpretation of Vivaldi's Four Seasons.......2007-03-29

I've had several copies from different conductors/orchestras. I thought I had listened to the best until I bought this...

5 out of 5 stars A great performance irrespective of price.......2007-02-08

I totally agree with the previous reviewer. Pommer is a consitently fine Baroque conductor and all of his releases on LaserLight are well-worth acquiring.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent performance.......2006-07-24

It is quite amazing but most of the performances (even by the best) of Four Seasons seem not be "in tune" with the mood. Listen to 'Winter': Allegro non molto and you will understand what I mean. The best violinists rush through this showing their fantastic technique and... missing beauty of this piece. I highly recomend this one, exactly because it is so full of understanding the tempo and structure. Another one I would highly recomend is by Maksymuk's Polish Radio Orchestra with Kontanty Kulka (an old recording - I am not sure you can find it on CD). It is amazing that even the masters like Yehudi Menuhin just can't get it right...

5 out of 5 stars beautiful recording.......2006-02-19

This recording has everything you want from Vivaldi's Four Seasons. I see no reason to buy one of the more expensive ones. I'm planning on using parts for my outdoor wedding and this will be great.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource - We LOVE This CD!.......2007-07-16

This is a GREAT CD! Both the children and my husband and I love it. We bought it as an introduction to opera for our homeschooled children, and never guessed we'd all enjoy it so much.

All the tunes are ones you will probably recognize - but hearing the words that go with the music and hearing them in *English* is so helpful! It has been really fun to find out what these songs are really about.

My kids and I often catch ourselves singing opera through the day now, which is really neat. It has helped build their understanding of music in many different ways, and has improved my oldest daughter's voice ability as she strives to keep up with the professional singers on the CD.

The music is beautiful, the words are lovely and give meaning, and this whole CD is just exceptionally good entertainment!

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Operas.......2006-10-16

THE WORLD"S VERY BEST OPERA FOR KIDS is a collection of fourteen of the best loved arias in the world. The whole family will enjoy this CD, which is a unique version of these famous arias in that these are all sung in English so your child (and you) can appreciate and imagine the story that it illustrates. It is a wonderful introduction to opera and will have the whole family humming the memorable melodies, which are sung by some of the best of famous voices. You will be inspired to read the storylines of the operas to your children for a wonderful educational and delightful family hour. The CD includes an insert with the words so you can sing along

5 out of 5 stars A Sampler of Greatest Hits and Karaoke, Too.......2006-04-05

It really doesn't get much better than this CD. The primary benefit of the music is that it is a terrific selection of funny and touching arias from the classical genre. I am an opera lover and bought this for myself to memorize the words in English, as prompts when I listen to the pieces untranslated. I started listening to the CD while I was driving, and within a week had bought about a dozen CDs to distribute to family members and friends, with kids (and without). Everyone loves it. And at the end of the CD are several tracks of just the music, so you can sing along, which is a hoot. Your friends and colleagues, who hear you barking along to beats, will think you have taken leave of your senses. The lyrics (in English) are in the liner notes. I would suggest not reading the liner notes while driving.

Second CD benefit. The time you spend listening to this will be the equivalent of an afternoon at the beach or a walk in the mountains. The calming factor is amazing.

4 out of 5 stars World's Very Best Opera for Kids... in English.......2006-01-30

I listen to this with my 3 year old and we both enjoy it. I am not an operatic expert and to my lay ears the performances here sound great, and my daughter likes hearing the words to some of her favorite music ("Play the Torreadores again Mommy!") Its a nice break from some more traditional kids songs that we listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Great for adults too!.......2005-08-15

I never had an interest in opera until I made a trip to Italy and dined in an opera cafe. I appreciate it even more thanks to this CD. Now that I can hear the lyrics in english and read a synopsis of the story, I appreciate and enjoy opera even more.

5 out of 5 stars Unlikely to be surpassed - ever!.......2007-07-13

"Jossephslegende" in my lifetime has gone from an obscure ballet suite recorded by Gerry Schwartz and the Seattle SO to a more complete rendition of the score by (possibly) Hiroshi Wakasugi and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. These performances seemed mostly for Strauss completists as the music was obviously from the "bottom of the drawer."

But then in 1999 Giuseppe Sinopoli led the Staatskapelle Orchestra of Dresden in a live performance of the complete ballet. It was released by DG, and frankly, it was a revelation. Sinopoli and the orchestra revealed a richness and power that one scarcely imagined was present in the music. Suddenly, "Josephs Legende" was more than just a musical curiosity - it was a fascinating musical statement.

And now, believe it or not, Ivan Fischer and his Budspest Festival Orchestra have issued on the Channel Classics label - in spectacular SACD sound - another performance of the music which is so revelatory that for all of the expertise shown earlier by Sinopoli and his players, we are reminded as never before that this is a BALLET - and what a ballet! Fischer reveals beauty and rhythms scarcely imagined before. What was impressive is now meaningful, and what was exciting is now magnificent.

NO LOVER OF LATE ROMANTIC MUSIC SHOULD PASS THIS BUY. - IT IS AN IMPERATIVE ACQUISITION. GET IT NOW. THERE'LL NEVER BE ANYTHING LIKE IT.

The debut of the young, classically trained international quintet of sopranos Jo Appleby and Tsakane Valentine, tenors David Habbin and Geoff Swell, and basso Nick Garret offers up a familiar take on the crossover formula that has enriched everyone from genre pioneers The Three Tenors to Russell Watson and beyond. While their occasionally electro-pumped rhythms and youth-angled marketing shtick ("The world's first opera band!") may borrow a page from Opera Babes and Bond, it still manages to evoke the spirit (if not the letter) of its eclectic classical sources. And if the world hasn't exactly been burning for yet another dramatized update of Turandot's melodic "Nessun Dorma," The Pearl Fishers, or--for that matter--"Unchained Melody," Amici Forever's takes on the pop side of the crossover equation are indeed promising, recasting Alex North's "Unchained.." ("Senza Catene") and their reworked theme to the miniseries Band of Brothers("Requiem for a Soldier") in a successful, neo-classical light. If Neopolitan-shaded originals like "Canto Alla Vita" and "Vita Mia" sound like Josh Groban clones, their glorious harmonic vocal reworkings of Faure's "Pavane" ("Whisper of Angels") and Elgar's "Enigma Variations" ("Nimrod: Lux Aeterna") bristle with an ambitious sense of adventure that's missing from much of their crossover competition. Serious opera buffs may still quarrel with the daring "impurity" of it all, but if Amici Forever prod a few more pimply punters to peruse Puccini, won't it all have been worth it? --Jerry McCulley

    5 out of 5 stars Definitive.......2007-07-27

Beautiful! Even friends who've never cared for opera love this one. A tonic at the end of a grueling day, a weekend afternoon introspective, a late-night lead-in to a flight of dreams ... a whisper of angels.

    5 out of 5 stars great choice.......2007-01-11

this was a gift for family. family member loves album quality and selections.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant offering.......2007-01-10

Amici Forever is suberb in every way. Their arrangements are exceptional and the original lyrics are perfect poetry.

    3 out of 5 stars Easy Listening.......2006-09-21

Bought the album after hearing someone talk about the group. Thought the voices were okay (baritone was the best) but in some songs didn't blend properly. Selection of pieces was interesting . . . pop, classical, opera. Good album for "background" music.

5 out of 5 stars Very Relaxing Music.......2006-09-11

I first heard it at a shop that sells English products. I thought it was interesting to hear and decided to get the CD for myself. I find the chorus very relaxing especially the last song which nearly put me to sleep as I am doing my homework. Amici Forever is a good CD to listen to when you have nothing to do or to soothe your wracked nerves.

    5 out of 5 stars Heavenly........2003-09-20

That is how I describe Maurice Andre's sound. So smooth and suave, and accurate every time. The Michael Haydn Concerto In D is one of the most impressive trumpet works ever recorded. Andre does it better than anyone else ever did, if you ask me. He also takes on J.S. Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2" and the results are majestic. The essential Joseph Haydn Trumpet Concerto is on here as well, a piece in which Andre plays an especially stunning cadenza on the first movement. The Telemann, Tartini, Handel, Vivaldi and Marcello are all impeccably played. Maurice Andre was the second or third trumpet player I started listening to after Miles Davis. I also discovered Clifford Brown around then, back in 6th grade. Since then, they have all remained in my list of all-time favorite trumpet players and musicians.

    5 out of 5 stars A must have album!.......2001-09-17

The incredible playing of Maurice Andre fills up all two of these cds. From the incredible brandenberg reading to the Cimarosa. This album from start to finish is a text book on beauty, style, phrasing, and how to play the trumpet. Andre is a true master of the trumpet and even more a true master musician.

    5 out of 5 stars Pyrotechnics.......2001-06-21

Maurice André is one of those people whom one suspects isn't quite human like the rest of us (Michala Petri is another). To anyone who has ever struggled to get as much as a parp or a toot out of a trumpet, the astounding technical facility and the pure, clear, pitch-perfect sound and wonderful tone of an André is a revelation that some people are indeed more equal than others. This collection represents André in his prime (he's now sadly semi-retired) and he does a wonderful job. Many of these works are not originally for trumpet, and only a modern piccolo valved trumpet allows them to be played. Nevertheless, they come up shining.

    5 out of 5 stars A must for the trumpet player's library!.......1999-09-23

If you're into trumpet concertos, Maurice Andre is as smooth and technical as they come. This two-CD set contains not only Bach, but also Handel, Telemann, Haydn, Albinoni, and others. If you have Andre's concertos in your sheet music library, these CD's make for great accompaniment. The CDs are great while studying as well. Mega cerebral (when you're into that kind of thing)!

3 out of 5 stars Interested oboe player.......2007-05-13

It is a fine collection of oboe pieces, and I really enjoy listening to them. The only complaint I have is that the case was broken when it got here (I'm not sure if it was before it was shipped or not).

    5 out of 5 stars Oboe cd.......2007-01-11

This cd took a little while to be delivered (a few weeks) but it was in excellent condition. I bought it along with another oboe cd so it could be that one of them was out of stock and they waited for that so that both could be shipped at the same time (which was fine with me).

5 out of 5 stars What a great CD for a Great Price.......2007-01-09

I really love the music on this CD.
I just cant stop listening to this. If you enjoy classical music. You will like this CD and if you would like a introduction to classical music than this is the CD for you.
(If you find that you dont like it, you have not spent a lot of money on it).
    Enjoy :-)

5 out of 5 stars Good for orchestra studies.......2005-07-24

The record presents the oboe very well. Price can't be beat too. Oboe music is always enjoyable (well, that's somewhat subjective, of course, but if you like oboe, you'll like this collection).

Just a small caution: this is a study aid sort of thing. I find listening to fragments of music -- frequently very familiar music -- somewhat distressful because of this coitus interruptus sorta feeling, kind of like when in the middle of Watermusik the Dying Swan piece suddenly heaves into sight.

In other words, this is a perfect CD for teaching kids the orchestra, but if you simply want some oboe music for pleasure, then I'd recommend to pick something else; for example "The Handel Collection" (a pretty old record), by The City of London Sinfonia (cond. John Rutter), 1990 American Gramaphone Records -- it is a collection too, but not excerpts, pieces are played fully, and the performance is sometimes better. It's just one example; I have it handy so I've mentioned it, that's all. I don't like listening to excerpts, that's what I'm trying to say. But I'm not saying this CD's bad, it's very good for orchestra studies.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-06-15

I really enjoyed this! It was really great for all oboe and classical music lovers! Very Very Nice!

5 out of 5 stars A joyful celebration of Brahms.......2007-05-31

This disc is a true joy- snatch it up while you can, especially at Naxos prices. It is by far one of the best (if not the best) cycles of Brahms' fully orchestrated Hungarian Dances out there, period. The Budapest Symphony Orchestra under Bogar turn in positively joyful readings full of the special bohemian orchestral sound found so rarely in any orchestra outside the region: a tiny bit ever so pleasingly off kilter with excitement. Naxos' sound, while I do not believe the best they've ever presented, is still consistently full and balanced and good enough to warrant no complaints from me. This disc is a keeper, for sure.

    3 out of 5 stars Somewhat middling.......2007-03-06

I feel as if I'm in the minority here when I say that this recording is a little bland.

While the price is a definite bonus (and you won't feel too bad in losing $7 for the CD if it turns that you don't like it), the recordings just don't do it for me even though I can tell that Bogar and the Budapest Symphony Orchestra play with gusto and the sonics are quite good and balanced.

When I first listened to this CD, I was feeling as if I were listening to a non-descript Western European or North American orchestra playing the dances a little more quickly than usual. Nothing more, nothing less.

My overall favourite recording of these dances is the one issued in 1985 by Hungaroton involving Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra. (N.B. This recording by Hungaroton is different from the one made by the same performers for Phillips in 1999. To my surprise, the older recording from Hungaroton sounds better than the newer one by Phillips. Who would have thought that 14 years would make a difference?)

The recording for Phillips (now issued by Eloquence) of the Hungarian Dances with Kurt Masur and the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester is surprisingly good and it's my favourite recording of the dances by a non-Hungarian orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars Hungarian Dances for Orchestra.......2006-12-19

Brahms wrote a great amount of music, including the Hungarian Dances, for piano four-hands. This music was composed for amateur music-lovers to play at home, and it included many reductions of Brahms's orchestral and chamber works as well as original compositions. In its original format, the Hungarian Dances became extremely popular and contributed more than any other work to Brahms's financial success during his lifetime. The music was quickly transposed for other instruments, including violin and piano by Brahms's friend Joachim, and orchestra, by a variety of hands. For those interested, the original four-hand piano version of the Hungarian Dances is available on Naxos in a recording by Kohn and Mathies in volume 2 of an extensive series of Brahms's four-hand piano music. The piano-violin arrangement of the dances is available in a Naxos recording by Bisengaliev and Lenehan. But the subject of this review is the orchestral version.

For modern listeners, the orchestral version of the Hungarian Dances is the most familiar, and this 1988 recording by the Budapest Symphony Orchestra conducted by Istvan Bogar is a classic. This is a relatively early Naxos release which deserves the many accolades it has received. It continues to attract many fine reviewers on this site. The playing is lively and spirited, joyous and melancholy in turn. It captures the gypsy spirit of the Hungarian Dances. For those listeners who need to be convinced that classical music can be lively and fun, this CD is an ideal place to start.

As a young man, Brahms toured briefly with a Hungarian violinist named Remenyi who gave Brahms a lifelong passion for Hungarian and gypsy music. This passion comes through in Brahms's longer and more somber works as well as in these dances. The earlier sets of these dances are based upon authentic Hungarian themes. In the latter dances, Brahms wrote the themes himself, in Hungarian style. The orchestrations were done by Brahms himself, by his friend Dvorak, and by a number of other composers. These are short delighful works, which will make your blood flow and your feet dance. They also are filled with tinges of melancholy and sadness. My own favorite of these works is No. 16, with its slow, melancholy opening and lively conclusion. Every listener will develop his or her own favorites from this set.

This CD of Brahms's Hungarian Dances is an excellent way to get to know a popular and enchanting style of classical music.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best recordings of the Hungarian Dances I've heard.......2005-10-13

Istvan Bogar may not be a household name to Classical music lovers in the US, but he leads spirited, dashing accounts of Brahms "Hungarian Dances" with a Budapest orchestra which plays very well for him. Tempos are often on the fast side, but always under control, and never breathless. The woodwinds play especially well in their solo licks, and there's always a certain joie de vivre (Joy of living) to these recordings.

The recorded sound is very clear and balanced, in line with Naxos' best recordings offered to the public.

This disc is a bargain: I heartily recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Likely The Best Stereo Set Of The Hungarian Dances.......2005-06-01

SHORT REVIEW: This 1988 recording of all 21 Hungarian Dances by Brahms is probably the best integral set available. Istvan Bogar leads a Hungarian ensemble (the Budapest Symphony) in playing that is idiomatic, if a little short on real zest or imagination. Although this Naxos CD has a rather stingy timing of just 49 minutes, the performances are well-recorded and constitute an easy choice for any Brahmsian who wants a complete set of these marvels in their orchestral versions.

LONGER REVIEW: Brahms wrote his 21 Hungarian Dances originally for piano four-hands, and he later orchestrated only #1, #3 and #10. #2 here is in a version by a Swedish conductor named Hallen, #4 is in an arrangement by composer Paul Juon, #5-7 are as transcribed by Schmeling, #8-9 were arranged by Gal, the bandmaster Parlow did #11-16, and Dvorak orchestrated #17-21. In general, the first 10 dances have the most Hungarian flavor and are the most frequently performed.

Having just listened through integral sets by Abbado (DG), Dorati (Mercury), Fischer (Philips) and this one by Bogar, I wonder if performing these lovely works with real zest and imagination has become a lost art. I am keeping this Bogar and eliminating the Abbado (too straight, and DG's sound is harsh), the Dorati (near equal to Bogar, but I prefer the sound of the latter's Hungarian ensemble), and the Fischer (kitschy and too clever by half, and rather listless to boot). To damn with faint praise, I feel that Bogar's set is the LEAST dull of this bunch.

Alternatives? Most of the great ones will require some searching, but the rewards are certainly worth it. Of course, there are the original piano 4-hand accounts, the best to my mind being all 21 by Tal/Groethuysen (Sony) and, for #11-21, the Katchen/Marty (Decca). Brahms's good friend Joseph Joachim arranged them for violin and piano, and there are superlative recordings of individual dances by Eugene Ysaye (Sony - extraordinary playing!), Bronislaw Huberman (Biddulph - even more extraordinary!), Albert Spalding (on a Remington LP that fetches about $100 in the collector's market!), David Oistrakh (Melodiya), Joseph Szigeti (Andante), and Tossy Spivakovsky (Pearl). All of these are played with a zeal and conviction only barely hinted at by Bogar and his ensemble.

There are some wonderful orchestral versions among historic CDs. Furtwangler did #1, 3, & 10 with the Vienna Phil. (EMI), Clemens Kraus recorded #1 & 3 with the London Symphony (Arlecchino), and Constantin Silvestri's virtuosic accounts of #5 & 6 are in a 10-CD set (Disky). But my favorites of all are those recorded in the 1950's by Gyorgy Lehel and the Hungarian Radio Symphony. Lehel's accounts of #1-8 and #10 are played with real abandon and a great sense of fun. These were on a Parliament LP that deserves to be reincarnated on a Supraphon CD.

Finally, if you want to REALLY hear the true Hungarian roots that inspired Brahms, try to find a copy of Arlecchino CD 109. That contains a SUPERB account of Bartok's "Bluebeard" (see my review) and, as a bonus, there are some thrilling Hungarian folk tunes played by the Toki Horvat Hungarian Putzsta Band. The latter performs a czardas used in one of Brahms's Hungarian Dances. This ensemble, led by the very gypsy-style violinist Toki Horvat, also has a cimbalon and what sounds like a tarogato (midway between a clarinet and a soprano sax). Everybody plays with a virtuosity that is simply staggering.

To have all 21 of these delightful dances with Bogar on an inexpensive Naxos CD definitely fills a niche. But if you want to hear how uninhibitedly this music CAN be played, consider finding some of the individual alternatives cited above.

4 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION TO NORWAY'S GREATEST COMPOSER.......2000-05-18

When i first picked up this cd, i must say that i was somewhat dubious in doing so. 'It's just another Grieg collection', i was thinking to myself. However, this collection is more than this. It offers an excellent insight to Norway's greatest composer. Fine for anyone who wishes to find out more about this great composer.
