Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.

4 out of 5 stars To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24

Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.

A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.

My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11

The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.

It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.

Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.

1 out of 5 stars OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15

Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17

This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"

Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.

It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

ASV living era does a great job of remastering and repackaging old 78 records. Here are a number of tasty guitar and violin pieces from the late twenties and early thirties. These guys were excellent musicians who could really cut loose in 4/4 time. This is enjoyable for background or focused listening. Another winner from this fine company.

5 out of 5 stars These Gentlemen Exude Fonk.......1999-09-16

As I wander through my choices of the bands in the Late 80's to the 90's to be the favorite in the bunch for an upcoming column, Satan and Adam have remained on the top of my list through all of it.

My first experience with the experience of Satan and Adam came when I was a young Harmonica player in Boston Ma, I was dating a ballerina at the time and she had said that the band that ha dplayed in U2's Rattle and Hum would be there, so we wandered out in the cold Boston night to Johnny D's in Sommerville.

The room exploded ,the sun shone, I think even my shoes came untied with all the moving around we were doing. Point being that it was an experience that I would never forget. We still chat about that night whenever emails are a flying.

I have seen them all over, they appeal to the masses, unifying and inspiring all they touch. As a sound engineer I send many days on the road, and I am more than happy to say "Hey Man, Check this out", when something really gets me good.

They have and will, Adam and Mr Satan you are my choice for the Best of the 90's.

Amazon.com's Best of 2000

This disc was recorded in Bernie Strassberg's living room with a reel-to-reel, and Lonnie Johnson's elegant vocal tone and masterful command of soul-soaked roots music transform the lo-fi surroundings into a mainline of unfiltered beauty. As children trample by amid slamming doors and random pieces of conversation, Johnson's voice calmly weaves together threads of rhythm and blues that would put most 48-track studio recordings to shame. --Matthew Cooke

Amazon.com

Forty years after beginning a remarkable recording career spanning multiple generations and genres, New Orleans-born blues and jazz guitar virtuoso Lonnie Johnson sat in a friend's living room in Queens, New York, with an acoustic guitar and a reel-to-reel recorder. The songs he performed that night make up this enchanting set of classics that adds yet another dimension to the great musician's legacy. Here, we find Johnson at age 66, his plaintive voice and guitar in stunning form, mining a 20th-century musical landscape for folksy treasures as diverse as Bessie Smith's "Back Water Blues," Duke Ellington's "Solitude," Hoagy Carmichael's "Rockin' Chair," and Kurt Weill's "September Song," with "Danny Boy" and "Careless Love" also among the surprises. Although it was recorded in 1965 on crude equipment, it's easy to see from this essential CD why Lonnie Johnson deeply affected so many American musical immortals, from Robert Johnson, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Elvis to Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. --Alan Greenberg

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars So simple, so pure..........2005-03-22

I never meant to get this CD. Actually, I never heard of it. a few weeks ago I ordered a few CD's somewhere and when I got them, they added this CD as a bonus. I listened to it once, and then I just couldn't stop. I never got so amazed from such a simple thing. You can hear th 66 year-old Lonnie, ssitting at a friend's house with an acoustic guitar, just spilling his heart out. It doesn't matter that the recording is not in the best quality, it even adds to the feeling. His voice is so bittersweet, it brings me tears to listen to him. such a perfect combination of voice and his unique guitar playing... another thing is that you can really tell it was recorded at a home surrounding: kids running around, talking to "daddy"... all of the atmosphere make it one of the best, honest and heartful recordings I ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Statement From A Masterful Performer.......2005-01-14

Lonnie Johnson's "The Unsung Blues Legend: The Living Room Sessions," is a remarkable monument to a man whose lengthy musical career spanned over six decades and reached stellar heights and very low points, such as when he was reduced to working as a custodian. The setting is informal with a warm, laid-back ambiance that you wish would never end. Johnson gently flows from one classic song to another, all the while making you feel as though you are right there in the same living room sitting in a comfortable chair and enjoying the beautiful sounds. The faint sounds of talking children in the background makes this recording all the more real, as if it could have been made in your own home or in that of a friend. By the time Johnson finishes this set, you do feel as though you have made a good friend, for whom you feel some pity for because he was never given the recognition such an outstanding artist is worthy of. Pick up a copy of this CD, you'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Great music but the Folkways recordings of same have more.......2004-03-24

These records are unique. Johnson plays all of these selections solo on an a very acoustic sounding electric guitar and sings them all. Now and then he talks about the songs. This is a master who had been playing and singing for 40 years. Yet, there is so much personal sentimental and feeling here, so much expression in the guitar playing. You feel like you know the man after you hear this. You feel like you really know these songs anew after you hear this album. This is a good album for a thoughtful evening with a good glass of wine, a good friend, and an open mind!

Check out the full folkways recordings that have 24 songs like this not just 12

5 out of 5 stars Lonnie did it all, and it all came straight from his soul!.......2000-07-24

I am amazed that Lonnie Johnson does not receive more attention in the guitar magazines and history books. He was a hero to Robert Johnson and B. B. King. The scope of what he did over a 50 plus year career included outstanding down & dirty blues (which in my opinion far outshine Robert Johnson) to early electric blues, to jump blues, to suave sentimental jazzy blues. On top of this, when you listen to him, you can tell this music comes from some very deep place within the man. I REALLY WISH THERE WAS MORE INFORMATION AVAILABLE ABOUT HIS LIFE.

These recordings have not been previously issued. They were recorded in the home of a guy named Bernie Strassberg in 1965. The sound is great, with a very intimate, comfortable feel. You can hear flashes of Lonnie's brilliance on the guitar. I only wish I could have heard him play with Duke Ellington's band in 1961 or seen him with Buddy Guy in 1970.

Thanks Bernie! You've done us all a great favor. Buy this disk now.

it is great to hear some jazz that focuses on the essential elements, melody and swing. This CD is a great tribute to the guitar tradition. The stripped down instrumentation and the acoustic quality of the recording(No AMPS ALLOWED)leave Steve and his trio no place to hide. They pass that test with flying colors. There is not one track that I don't enjoy and the CD is on the top of my stack. I would suggest this CD to anyone who likes great music. As soon as I first heard the Steve Greene CD, I knew it would be a regular listen. It's devoid of the pretentious, over-produced sheen of many newer jazz records, and sounds very intimate.

Recently, the CD was playing in the living room while I was in the kitchen. I was amazed at how much it sounded like Steve's trio was right in the next room! It's got an excellent, natural sound and a relaxed feel that is just tremendous.

And the playing is great! If you get a chance to get this CD, don't pass it up.

I didn't even know who Bob Malone was until the night I saw him by accident a couple of years ago. I went to see the woman who opened for him. I forgot her name shortly after Bob took the stage, because I was in awe for two hours. I bought this album after the show because I wanted to hear what I heard live. This set pretty much nails it. Great stuff. Bravo!

    5 out of 5 stars simply wonderful.......2004-06-25

It's almost impossible for me not to smile while listening to this wonderful record. There are many times in fact, when I have laughed with joy and amazement at the pure, unadulterated music-making of this amazing man. 'Neighbor Gone Home' and 'I'll Be A Friend To Jesus' are among my favourites here, with the latter in particular having me in hysterics when Joseph pulls up abruptly at the high notes, leaving his friend Blooming Rosalie Roberts to carry the tune. All through the album Joseph's half-sung, half-grunted, half-mumblescatted vocals (a new term that fits, I think!) are just amazing and delightful. Trust me, you have never heard ANYTHING like the singing of Joseph Spence! It is absolutely outrageous!

For the uninitiated, Joseph Spence played guitar exclusively in something called 'Dropped D' tuning, and his beautiful, syncopated Calypso fingerstyle is inimitably great. He was a gem of a musician, and a true original. Joseph was not as young as he used to be by this time, but don't let that deter you. This is a wonderful album. Check out "More and More With Jesus", "I'll Overcome Someday", or "Where Shall I Go" for some wonderful Joseph Spence guitar performances.

This album is a complete blast of infectious, wonderful, guitar-and-voice simplicity. There's some kind of joy and delight that just comes out in Joseph Spence's music. It's unique, and something hard to explain; you just have to hear him. And you MUST hear him! The Book of Proverbs says that "A merry heart does good like a medicine." With this in mind I have no hesitation in recommending to everyone a good listen to Mr. Joseph Spence. His music and his spirit will do you a power of good. Absolutely unmissable!

    5 out of 5 stars Essential Recording.......1999-04-01

It is impossible to praise Joseph Spence highly enough. He was an authentic original on the guitar and a one-of-a-kind singer. This is a great record, but then everything he recorded was wonderful. Not sure? Ask Ry Cooder, John Renbourne, Duck Baker, Stefan Grossman,etc.etc. All of these highly regarded musicians hold Spence in their highest estimation.

      Product Description

Graham Cousens is a singer-songwriter who has been quietly wowing audiences in and around Chicago since 2003. “Living Room Sessions” is a collection of ten simply great songs recorded entirely by Graham at home. Featuring the bouncy early-Brit inspired “Julia,” the country pop ethos of “Comfort Me,” and the ethereal love ballad “Help Me Help Myself,” “Living Room Sessions” is truly a collection of compositions. Songs such as “So Long” and “When I Was Around,” which seem at first to be inspired by the Buckley/Coldplay/Radiohead trend of late, are suddenly transformed and released by an infusion of Woodstock nation harmonies and tasty Les Paul licks. “Lucky Stars” and “Holy Roller” are the fun ones, though each features a unique juxtaposition of sunny groove and dark lyrics. “Emily” and “Anymore” both rise perfectly to the occasion, bringing a slow build to the inevitable conclusion that everything is just as it should be. And “I’m a Gonna” is the perfect classic rock-down that lets the listener off nicely after 30 minutes of somewhat naked introspect. “Living Room Sessions” delivers what far too few records seem to do these days – a cohesive yet diverse collection of really good tracks, each of which can stand on it’s own, and yet the whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts. In the age of mp3s, CD singles, and throwaway shorts, Graham Cousens has released an album of songs.
