Music Design, May 2002 Piano Issue
Touching melodies & unbridled creativity await listeners on the gorgeous new album OPEN SKY. Equal parts classical sophistication and romantic abandon.
Product Description
What does Open Sky sound like? Here's a description:
"Open Sky, the much anticipated follow-up to Jeanette Alexander's internationally acclaimed debut CD Still Point, is a treasury of gentle, memorable melodies, lush with strings arranged by producer and violinist, Jeffey Sick, and graced by special guests oboist Nancy Rumbel and guitarist Eric Tingstad.
Destined to be a hidden flower in a desert of synthesizer music, the all-acoustic sound of Open Sky will delight your senses, inspire your heart, and soothe your spirit."
Touching melodies and unbridled creativity await listeners on the gorgeous sophomore album from Jeanette Alexander titled OPEN SKY. Alexander's vivid compositions are equal parts classical sophistication and romantic abandon - beautiful flights of fancy that set the spirit free. "Common Ground," one of the album's most powerful works, is like an ode to lost love and bittersweet youthful memories. The interplay between Alexander's poignant piano melodies and the warm instrumentation of Jeffery Sick (violin) as well as guest artists Eric Tingstad (guitar) and Nancy Rumbel (oboe) adds to the piece's emotional impact. Others like "Because of You" and "Out of the Blue" make one feel as if time no longer exists, just a realm of endless peace and rejuvenation.

Very good.......2007-06-26
This is my first shamanic music CD that I bought and I am quite happy I picked this one so I will probably be getting the Shamanic Dream II soon as well. The music on this CD is perfect for winding down after a hard day at work and for attuning to the earth energies. I usually listen to this CD with my eyes closed and at some point during my listening session, my eyes start to move rapidly which is called REM (rapid eye movement) and is indicative of a high theta state. My mind becomes much quieter and I feel deeply relaxed. So this CD is very suitable for meditaiton practice. Highly recommended.
My favorite yoga CD.......2007-06-08
I am a yoga teacher and this is my favorite CD to teach to. Shamanic Dream features two, half-hour tracks which are extremely hypnotic and relaxing, and help to promote a feeling of meditation. The first track has a steady drum beat which feels like a heart beat. I find it to keep a great beat which makes you want to have a rhythmic, engaging yoga flow practice. The second track is similar, but features insect noises that are extremely relaxing. You can float away listening to the insect hum. That might sound annoying, but it is very relaxing. There are no vocals on the CD. I frequently teach to this CD, and use it for my home practice, and I never get tired of it.
I use this CD in my practice.......2007-05-13
This is a great CD to play while doing Reiki on clients.
There are not enough stars in your listing..........2007-05-07
There are not enough stars in your choices for ratings to say how good this CD is. I was transported by the subtle qualities of the sounds. As a meditation aid it is absolutely transporting. I first played it while driving and it was almost dangerous because I was hypnotized by it. I really had to pay attention to the road.
If you are looking for an aid to meditation I recommend this CD. I will be using it a lot. I will also use it for other areas as well. It is such an uplifting piece of music.
Sublime.......2007-03-06
Both volumes of this title are top notch. The sound is rich and quietly rhythmic. The inclusion of vocals blends perfectly with the instrumentation. And while the sound is hypnotic and relaxing, it is never monotonous. My only regret is each time a track ends...

This is a great CD to do Reiki by.......2007-05-13
I use this CD in my Reiki practice.
Shamanic Dream, Vol. 2.......2007-05-08
I love this music, it is the best, should also try Vol 1, it is also the best.
Another off the rating scale..........2007-05-07
Here is another one of Anugama's off the rating scale. The Chakra section was wonderful and I felt each of these energy points open up and respond to the sound of the music like I have never felt them before. I can't wait to introduce them to others like myself that want excellent music to help myself, as well as other to meditate better and to reach deeper into the connectedness of all things. I feel playing any of these CDs by Anugama that I am not alone in when I am playing them in meditation, but a part of a world that is seeking inner peace. Another WOW.
Fabulous for yoga!.......2007-03-02
I bought this CD to play in my Yoga classes, and it's perfect! Relaxing but not distracting.
Shamanic Dream, Vol. 2.......2007-02-21
This CD was always playing during yoga class, and I had to have it for my private collection. It has a quality that instantly relaxes and centers the inner-self.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Truly beautiful.......2005-09-26
Anugama is absolutly beautful, truly. But that's just me. I can mainly tell about mt fav. Eternal Traveller and The Empty Sky. Don't get me wrong cause the others a great but i prefer these two over all. "Eternal Traveller" is truly amazing so soft, quiet, mystical and just b-e-a-utiful! I absolutly love that song, but again, hey....that's just me. It's like when you wake up early (5:00am or so) or real late at night and you go outside, your standing by a big field with lake and it's real foggy or misty with just a small hint of light to see it all. That gorgeius veiw with the mountains in the background. Real warm but too warm nor too cool, crickits and leaves gently blowing can be heard in the distance. (If your even a little into this) You get a warm tingly feeling in your heart thats spreads all over your body. This atmosphere mixed with this music then gives a chill that makes you smile a little. That's what this song is like. Listening to this song eyes closed or not you just fade off into the music. I highly recamend this cd to anyone who's into the New Age music, or get the feelings like the one above. "The Empty Sky" is great too, but it seems like it's a sequal too Eternal Traveller that's all. I still love though. Sorry this message was so long peoples, can'nt help myself sometimes. But i would get if I were you(even though I'm not) cause it's truly worth it!
Another good CD!.......2005-08-05
This one has 14 songs & is just as good as the other.
Great for listening to on the beach if I do say so myself.
Beautiful Blend of Relaxing Music.......2004-06-27
This album is a selection of songs by Anugama that were chosen to enhance relaxation. At 74 minutes long, this stout CD makes use of classical guitar, flamenco guitar, steelstring guitar, Hawaiian slide guitar, recorder flute, electronic flutes, traverse flute, native American flutes, shakuhaji flute, keyboards and native American drums. The songs vary quite a bit in sound & style, so it's never boring. Yet it's always relaxing. I'm a massage therapist, and this is one of my favorite CD's to use in the office.

My massage therapist used this music during my last massage. It was exactly what I needed at the moment. Beautiful and meditative....
I don't know where he got it..........2007-05-07
I don't know where he got it but Anugama has go "IT". Another wonderfully uplifting meditative piece of music. Again your rating scale is inadequate to rate the impact of the music as a spiritual piece and an aid to meditation. The section to do with the Crown Chakra actually made my Crown Chakra vibrate. Wow. Om Shanti.
Great album.......2005-12-28
This is a great album, but if you already have Shamanic Dream 1 or 2, you may want to pass on this one. It's very similar to the these.
Good Music For Massage Therapy.......2005-08-05
My mother just ordered this CD almost a week ago & we received it today. This recording sounds so beautiful & makes good for a massage session. It has 3 songs that I've never heard before. the first 2 run around 25 minutes each while the closing track runs over 10 minutes. She has bought 2 other titles by Anugama in the past but never online.
If by chance you check out this CD, you will be honestly amazed.
Yoga Asana.......2005-02-07

Customer Reviews:
Another good CD from Iona.......2007-07-19
If you're a fan of Iona, the progressive rock/Celtic/Christian conglomeration from Ireland, you'll find this a nice addition their other albums. The music is rich with lyrics and melody, and (of course) the musicianship is excellent. It's very well layered with harmony and rhthym.
If you've not heard Iona before, I recommend it. Iona has a melodious context that comes out of Irish folk, but electrified and put to a driving pop/rock rhythm. Lyrics range from traditional Irish to overtly Christian and socially conscious.
Saw them in concert, playing many of the tracks from this album -- very good.
Greg .......2007-06-25
Being a fan of progressive "art rock" bands like Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons, and 70s Genesis, I was excited to discover a truly Christian progressive rock band. I have 4 of Iona's earlier CDs, but shortly after listening to "The Circling Hour" I was disappointed. In fact, I sold the CD back to the used CD store. For one thing, the vocals sound weak and lilting when compared to their earlier powerhouses like "The Book of Kells", and "Beyond These Shores." The lead guitar seems to wandering at times, providing little sense of direction in the music. There are some moments of fine keyboard and piano, but these are few and far between. I've really enjoyed the lengthy, cinematic pieces of music that were present on "Open Sky" and the earlier albums, but "Circling Hour" does not seem able to capture that which Iona does best. This is not to say the album is without talent--it's just that Iona is capable of much better.
Dissapointing and Uninspiring!.......2007-03-24
I regret that I have to agree 100% with the reviewer previous that stated this was an dissapointing release by an otherwise amazing band. Iona rehashes a lot of their previous instrumental ideas and there are really no progressive pop hits on this album that trademark previous releases. Joanne singing is weak and breathy, Dave's guitar solos seem a bit sloppy, and overall the production does not seem mixed well.
Joyous. Moody. Elegant. .......2007-03-06
Although I am familiar with Iona, I haven't heard any of their previous albums in their entirety. I do recall that they differ slightly from their The Circling Hour in that more emphasis was given on long, ambiant passages on their earlier material, such as Open Sky and the much revered Journey into the Morn while their new release is unafraid to delve into uncharted territory, lending itself to both energetic pieces and the more trademark sounds of their former work.
The Circling Hour sees the band return with a somewhat more joyous energy, churning out rhythmically dynamic cuts focusing on the incredibly beautiful vocals of Joanne Hogg. Her silky smooth tone, plaintive delivery, and unmatched melodic power make for a unique combination, and it is only understandable why songs like "Strength" and "No Fear in Love" must have been written specifically with her voice in mind. Hogg shines like the brightest star in the sky on "Strength", a song featuring gently strummed acoustic guitars, a nice shaker sound in the intro, and fat rhythms at the end. Likewise, "No Fear in Love" sees Hogg taking centre stage once again while little sections of acoustic guitars, distant percussion work, a nice mandolin melody, and elegiac blues guitar wrap her sweet tone up.
That is not to say, however, this album lacks the band's core stylistic elements. On the contrary, the first two songs "Empyrean Dawn" and "Children of Time" represent everything Iona stands for. Wonderful choir voices, a myriad of instruments (check the darabukkas on the second piece), low and high whistles, pipes, and their unmistakable Celtic element permeat these tracks, venturing into bass-heavy soundscapes where Hogg delivers the lyrics adapted from T.W. Rolleston's 1913 poem "The Song of Maelduin", from which the title of the album was also inspired.
Guitarists Dave Bainbridge and Troy Donockley excel in their performances, throwing in everything from Floydian guitar runs to folky motifs and trance-inducing e-bow addition. On "Wind Off the Lake", at over eleven minutes (and mostly instrumental), they are at their most psychedelic phase, borrowing tons of Celtic influences, blazing Hammond organs, and ethereal wind chimes in order to climax the song with a dramatic finale. "Sky Maps" only serves to thicken this experiment: it is hauntingly beautiful with lucid layers of keyboards, mood-intensive piano arrangements, and the mandatory inclusion of flute. The lead guitar work here is unbelievable.
The "Wind, Water & Fire" trilogy is divided into three tracks, titled "Wind", "Water" and "Fire", and finds the band revisiting their older days creating impossible threads of atmosphere, the first one being entirely instrumental, the second one featuring wordless vocal melodies from Hogg (God - that voice is amazing!), and the last one simply being the heavy finish as guitars, bass, and drums are all woven into the mix. Speaking of which, drummer Frank Van Essen had me drool the first ten or fifteen times I spinned this album. I can't believe I missed out on this guy all these years. Although Iona's music is mostly soothing and relaxing, and therefore not all that suitable for a drummer to showcase his skills, this man proves you can still insert all these subtle cymbal and snare rhythms without driving the song away from its melodic focus.
Though far from being similar, I still recommend Iona to fans of Mostly Autumn, White Willow, Dead Can Dance, Blackmore's Night, and even NIL. All of these bands are equally astonishing and deserve to be heard.
Musical perfection in balance.......2007-02-11
Met Wind off the Lake vol reels is opnieuw een recordpoging lange songs (11:02) gedaan.

Amazing Celtic-Christian Prog.......2006-12-20
Let me start by saying I LOVE Iona. I can't think of anything bad to say about them. The music itself is so passionate and meaningful and the orchestrations are amazing. Personally I think it was a great idea to write an entire song cycle about a thousand year old illuminated manuscript of the four gospels and what they mean to the faith of the musicians. Inspiration from something so deep and personal clearly resulted in a deeply, personal composition. Iona is wonderful and this album was an excellent addition to my library.
Another excellent Iona masterpiece is the live album with the All Souls Orchestra. It has some pieces from The Book of Kells, and some from other albums, and it is really beautiful.
Excellent World Class production........2005-11-10
I've had this album for nearly 12 years now and have likely listened to it hundreds of times. I also own a published copy of the ancient manuscript, The Book of Kells. This album is an epic of discovery through the enlightened Gospels and the band/composers should be commended for their musical interpretation of such an important bit of history. I studied the copy of the manuscript initially with this very album playing in the background...it was a perfect soundscape. Several of the songs are titled based on the individual Illuminated Gospels themselves. Mark the Man is one that stands out, but each track is a 10 on its own!
The band takes its name from the island between England/Scotland and Ireland. The history of illuminated Gospels extends to the Island of Iona, so it was highly appropriate that the band, made up of members from both islands, should create and perform "The Book of Kells".
Excellent - better than 5 stars.

Celtic elevator music.......2005-08-16
The Book of Kells was one of the most important pieces of art and literature in Western Culture.
It's a big ask for a modern 'celtic' musical group to produce a serious interpretation of this iconic and complex piece of literature.
Do they succeed?
In a single word, "No."
Whilst their music is good listening; dreamy, ethereal and swoopy, it is closer to 'elevator music' than I would expect.
The lyrics are banal.
Pleasing to the ear, but a little disappointing.
Christian Celtic Progressive Rock Concept Album?.......2004-07-25
Iona, for those of who have never heard of them, are a Christian progressive rock band that from the British Isles. They are an amazingly talented group! Their music is very hard to describe in a only a few short sentences. They are a very atmospheric band that has a remarkable musicianship. All of these musicians in this band are WORLD-CLASS. They can play in any style and do anything they want, because they have the talent. Iona are the following musicians:
Dave Bainbridge - guitar, keyboards, programming
Joanne Hogg - vocals, keyboards
David Fitzgerald - tenor/alto saxophones, flute, piccolo
Nick Beggs - Chapman stick, Wal's 5-string bass
Terl Bryant - drums and percussion
Frank Van Essen - percussion, violin
Troy Donockley - uillean pipes, low whistle
Guest Musicians - Robert Fripp (King Crimson) - guitar, soundscapes, Fiona Davidson - celtic harp, The Paul Whitfield Strings - ensemble violins/violas, the congregation of Kessington Temple Church
Now the music of this album is very conceptual or in other words its music and lyrics all follow a theme that progresses through the album. The album is VERY progressive. It is such a beautiful album. There isn't anything harsh or distorted about this album at all. I think it's a shame that musicians and groups of this caliber aren't recognized in the United States. There is so much good music here that anyone that has musical ears or that plays an instrument can appreciate it. This album also won several awards. One of them being "Best International Album" by Dove. I think Christian music should take some pointers from these masters as they rely heavily on the music to lead. There aren't many vocals on this album at all, because it's mostly instrumental. I understand the importance of lyrics in Christian music, but not all Christian music has to have vocals. Music speaks a voice by itself. Listen to this album and open your heart and you will not be disappointed.
I also highly recommend the following Iona albums:

Wonderful Album! One of my favorites of all-time!.......2004-07-29
Iona are a band from the British Isles. Their overall sound is so dynamic it consists of many different styles of music such as Celtic folk, progressive rock, and new age. Before I get into the musical aspect of this album I want to mention the incredible musicians in this band which are:
Dave Bainbridge - guitar, keyboards, programming, string arrangements
Joanne Hogg - vocals, keyboards, acoustic guitar
Mike Haughton - soprano/alto/tenor saxophones, flute, recorder
Nike Beggs - chapman stick, wal 5 fretted and fretless bass, ashbury bass
Terl Bryant - drums and percussion
Guest musicians on "Beyond These Shores"
Troy Donockley - uilleann pipes, low whistles, e-bow guitar
Peter Whitfield - violin, viola
Robert Fripp - guitar and Frippertronics
Frank van Essen - solo violins
Debbie Bainbridge - oboe
Fiona Davidson - Celtic harp
String Ensemble - Francis Cummings - violin, Mansell Morgan - violin, Richard Williamson - viola, Anna Frazer - cello, Christopher Hoyle - cello, Rebecca Whettan - cello
The music in this album is very much in the vein of Celtic progressive rock with a new age edge to it. There are many songs on this album that had my jaw dropped completely because I just couldn't believe what I was hearing. This album is so hard to review because EVERY song on this album is fantastic! Some real highlights for me were the following songs:
"Treasure" - what can I say other than this could easily have been a Grammy winner, in fact this whole album should have won one something
"Edge of the World" - a really soft ballad, beautiful vocals and a great underlying melody
"Bird of Heaven" - an epic song with so many dynamics that it's hard to describe the power of this one, there such a beautiful solo by Dave Bainbridge on this song....I would go as far as to say this is my favorite Iona song of all time
"Burning Like Fire" - another very progressive pop type song, great melody with an undercurrent of synths and yet another Dave Bainbridge solo that he just smokes and reminds me of Allan Holdsworth in the beginning of the solo the way he just rips right into it
"Beachy Head" - fantastic song, I love the way this song was arranged or orchestrated, the instrumentation with the string ensemble was just amazing, great sax playing from Mike Haughton
I really liked the whole album. I mean this is one of those desert island albums to me. I don't think I can live without this album at all. Listen with an open mind and make sure you listen to everything going on within the music. This album has some really incredible things happening. Can you hear what I hear? If you do then you'll be listening to this album for a long time. This album and "The Book of Kells" are the best albums by this band and I have most of their albums and those two really impressed me the most and left me wanting more.

Typically awesome worship from IONA.......2004-05-15
A friend of mine turned me on to Iona some years ago and I am so glad that he did. From the moment I started playing the first song of theirs I ever hear to this CD release I have nothing but praise for this group. Joanna's solid vocals and the bands incredible muscianship are superb. A true worship experience.
alternately soothing and invigorating . . . just beautiful.......2003-04-17
A rare beauty of a CD . . . hauntingly beautiful, both calming and inspiring. Great for those of us who can't always fall asleep or wake up just when we'd like . . . can both soothe you to sleep and make you want to get up to greet a new day. Some tracks are like lullabies, others rousing dances. Many thanks to this fine band!
Still a 5, but..........2003-03-13
this newest release from Iona is more progressive with less singing & more instrumentals. Iona normally writes, or should I write "Uses" lyrics of the ancient Celtic Christian past, not the typical modern mediocre of Christian "Pop" which I never listen to. There are references to Christ, but more allegorical or universal (Catholic/Eastern Orthodox Mysticism). After studying the lyrics about silent prayer & darkness into light, Iona seems to reflect the philosophy of either "The Cloud of the Unknowing" or maybe "St. John of the Cross". Iona's music is more of a focus on certain Celtic Christian saints (this CD has some songs about St. Colombo) & their love of God, harmony of nature, & life.
sublime..........2003-02-26
Sweeeeet... wonderful. Inexpensive transportation to the heart of Iona... another place, another time... beautiful pure voice, reverb as deep as the cover art... Rich. Lush. Cinematic. Wonderful. Simply wonderful. And 23 seconds short of overflowing the CD. I'm hooked.
IONA ALMOST REACH PERFECTION.......2002-11-07
....more guitars ? I SAY THATS GOOD more progressive ? YES PLEASE
new drummer? I`M A DRUM TEACHER AND I CAN TELL YOU THIS GUYS GOOD
more subtle references to Christ ? THE RELIGIOUS TONES ARE THERE
ITS JUST MORE IN REACH TO THE MASSES (don`t leave you feeling bashed with a bible to much). I congradulate and thank IONA
for making the best music they have produced to date , this CD goes down as an inovative true classic deserving of better reviews than I can write or anyone else by the looks of things.
