Not a good source for the "Hetty Winthrop" theme.......2002-03-12
If you're a fan of the theme song of the "Hetty Wainthrop" detective series on PBS's "Mystery!" you might be tempted by the CD cut "The TV Detectives." The theme song melody is a small part of this larger work, but the arrangement just doesn't measure up.

This gorgeous, specially-priced collection reveals why White Swan Records is widely considered the leading purveyor of “yogabeat.” Bestselling mantra enchantress Deva Premal, the “guru of East-West fusion” Prem Joshua, emerging talents such as Manish Vyas and Suvarna: all represent White Swan’s knack for selecting the finest music for the creative, spiritual listener. The underlying beauty of yoga’s incredible popularity is that millions of Americans are realizing the connection between their bodies, the earth and each other. Heard in yoga studios nationwide, White Swan’s music facilitates the deepening of that bond. With remixes by dj Cheb i Sabbah, an unreleased Deva Premal track, new classics from Prem Joshua and other favorites, Journey to the Inner East Vol. 2 tracks the still-rising arc of a label on a mission to develop a lasting personal connection between its artists, listeners and the music we share.

Customer Reviews:
Afghanistan - World Network.......2007-06-01
A nice collection of "pre-troubled" Afghanistani music, recorded by the German WDR group in 1974, prior to the bulk of the political and religious upheaval that's taken place in the intervening decades. Thanks to the time frame of this recording, the traditions haven't been altered forcefully for the most part (though there are hints at Islamization of works from the Nuristani region). While the pieces hail from around the country, there is a focus on the Herat region and the region of Mazar-E-Sharif (where the works were recorded). The music itself runs the gamut from a simple, barely accompanied shepherd paean to full, harmonium-equipped ensembles backing up trios of singers. The highlight of the disc is the bareness of the music in many cases, which allows a seemingly more heartfelt song to be sung over the accompaniment. The opening love song from Herat is a prime example, with the plaintive cries of a lover filling the room. Just watch the volume when the child singers come on.
Nice music - Weak liner notes.......2002-02-19
The music is lovely.
I'm disappointed with the liner notes and packaging design. The photo that appears as cover art is on the cardboard sleave and not repeated in the plastic case (so I can't throw it away). The fat booklet in the cardboard is ALL ADVERTISEMENTS for other CD's. In the plastic case is a booklet with uninformative cover art and 15 pages of loosely spaced text. Eight are German or French. Two are more advertising. Only five are English liner notes. There are two thumbnail size, black and white pictures of the musicians.
I think I was spoiled by the liner notes in the Lomax collection CD's. For example, the "East Indian Music in the West Indies" CD has 11 pages of dense text plus six black and white and one color photo.
Again, the music for "Afganistan: A Journey to..." is lovely. It's pleasant and exotic. You could listen to it during a dinner party. My only gripe is that I learned so little about what I was hearing.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent music for Tai Chi!.......2001-04-10
For those of you who like music with your daily Tai Chi regimen, I highly recommend this disc. The music - a blend of various Asian traditions -- is peaceful and soothing, and helps me reach a semi-meditative state. When I practice Tai Chi, I prefer traditional Chinese or Japanese music; this is the first New Age CD that I can say that I really enjoy. Also, I dislike abrupt transitions in music, so it is important to note that although there are 2 tracks, the switch is barely noticeable.
Eastern music for Western ears, a little too mellow.......2001-03-21
Do not operate heavy machinery while listening to this album! This reminds me a lot of Silk Road II by Kitaro. It is more eastern than Silk Road II, but still manages to be New Age at the same time. This is accessible eastern music, with no Samisen. The entire disc is very tranquil, but pleasant to listen to. On the Kitaro Scale, it rates about a 5, or the equivalent of taking a couple of NyTol.

Awesome!! Different!!.......2005-08-01
I first stumbled upon Shiva In Exile while playing around in iTunes radio section. I was feeling adventurous and went to the World Music section and found music that I wouldn't normally listen to. This is quite a world away from the norm and frankly, I like to get away from the norm every once in a while. I instantly fell in love with the independantly labled (Magnatune) composer. It's the kind of music you relax to or if you're feeling crazy, float off to another world. As someone interested in different cultures of the world, this fits right in with my craving for something new and different. I also recommend these indy names... Tilopa, Beth Quist, Solace, Stellamara, Tim Rayborn. If you like folk music, try Shira Kammen or Drevo, all under the Magnatune lable. Each song on this album makes you feel like you're experiencing eastern culture (particularly Indian) at its best. Great Composition!!

doubleplusungood.......2003-12-20
weak, watery, boring, predictable, hackneyed. Not good. Not good at all.
3 star and 1/2,by regarding this CD as pop progressive music.......2002-12-27
This new prog CD of the eighties is not bad, despite of this album being a bit weak in some parts! Nevertheless the vocal is interesting, reminding me of that one concerning the lead singer of Pavlov's Dog,expecially in the growing section of the title track ...anyway proceeding by order, at the beginning We can listen to a light romantic song, which seems tepid and weak, instead afterwards (in the 2nd section), it grows in dynamics, till you find an epic part almost Yes-like!! Then there are some interesting short spare interplays between the keyboards and the guitars, in order to accompany the melodies in an aggressive manner!! By prosecuting you find funny moments and catchy melodies, even though without any peak, then at last there is a better structured song, "Journey to the east", which is much representative of this album. In fact it sets their standard to a definitive pop progressive range of music ideas, which could be the best way to hear AOR music enriched with a "full-bodied" sound, typical of such stuff from the early Yes... this album at the end is suitable for the lightest and less busy moments...
Recommended as an underrated and interesting new prog/pop progressive album of the 80's UK scene, even though not completely essential.
Buen albun, variado en musicalizacion y con trazas acuaticas.......1999-09-29
