Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Recording Quality.......2004-08-05

The CD set is an excellent historical audio documentation of Schnabel's virtuosity. I was disapointed in the quality of the recording. I suppose I am spoiled with new technology but this is a great performance recorded on a CD with vinyl record technology in the 1930's, which it is. I have heard the Sonata cycle on the BBC Online archives by a Spanish pianist. The sound quality was much better via the web.

5 out of 5 stars A shocker.......2004-07-03

This set actually came to me as a mistake, but at $50, there wasn't really any question as to whether I should keep it or not. I expected the sound quality to be horrible, the playing sloppy (characteristic to Schnabel), and the interpretations to be too rowdy for me.

These sonatas were recorded throughout the 1930's, but I will not lie, you can absolutely not tell at all. There is no hiss, only a rather beautifully played piano.

Schnabel keeps sonatas 1-27 crisp, clean and clear. The interpretations seem perfect, despite a few oddly chosen tempi. The late sonatas, I can not say the same. I am especially thrown over the edge by no. 28's fourth movement. The fantastic melody, one of my favorites, is ruined by Schnabel's playing. Also, in the Hammerklavier, the opening four bars are rubbish.

Other than those two mistakes (in my opinion), this set is one of the best money can buy, and worlds ahead of any other complete set for only $50. The beauty of his playing is astounding, and the remastering is a stroke of genius.

If you are looking desperately for the proper Beethoven piano sonata set, as I was for months, this is the one. I also looked into Wilhelm Kempff's, Alfred Brendel's, Richard Goode's, Daniel Barenboim's and Anton Kuerti's.

Although it is a widely known fact that no set of these sonatas is perfect, this is as close as it comes. Do yourself a favor, buy this set. For $50, it is an unsurpassable bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Take the plunge!.......2003-08-18

Anyone dubious about buying the Goldberg variations, or the Goldberg variations on the harpsichord, is not likely to regret the risk in picking up a copy of this marvellous classic performance for next to nothing.

From comments I have read there seems to be a belief in some quarters that the instrument Landowska uses is too high-powered to be authentic, but without having any specialised knowledge of the matter I shall risk putting a different view. I have some Couperin, who was a generation ahead of Bach, played by Blandine Verlet, and the first and striking impression you will get comes from the startling power and 'weight' of the instruments she uses. These instruments are contemporary with Couperin, they are if anything more powerful in tone than the seemingly contentious beast used by Landowska, so I have to be sceptical regarding the challenges to its authenticity.

What ought to be beyond any challenge is the performance itself. For majesty, poise, rhythmic bite, clarity of fingerwork, grasp of the baroque style and sheer enthusiasm I doubt we are ever likely to hear better than this. The recording is very respectable too, for its age. What we have here is one great and inspired intellectual interpreting an even greater. To gain the maximum pleasure and edification from this particular work, I have found it helpful to educate myself about it. What I have done is to follow the performance with Tovey's analytical notes, not the sort of thing I would do as a rule. Tovey can be patronising and supercilious, he can be hectoring and he can be downright childish at times, but his command of the technicalities combined with his transparent and shining love for the music make it easy to ignore all that. (In passing, I am pleased to have his scholarly endorsement of my own view, obviously shared by Landowska as well, that it is neither necessary nor desirable to play all repeats.) Bach expressed himself through intellectual devices, the expression he achieved through them ranks with the most sublime in the history of the art of music, and I doubt that any of us will get the most out of the Goldberg variations without going to some pains ourselves. 'Delightful is the prize without the effort' says Horace ironically. The prize here is great, and the effort does not amount to much anyway.

The music of Rondo Veneziano has not been vailable for sale in the U.S. until Amazon brought it to us.

Fantasia is a classic example of the skill for which Rondo Veneziano is known throught out Europe. The mood is fast paced yet soothing. A country drive or sunny Sunday morning cup of coffe is improved with this CD of new yet slightly familiar music.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars passionate pianism with lots of mistakes.......2005-03-24

Gieseking is best known for his Debussy. In these recordings, Gieseking plays pieces from an earlier epoch in Schumann. Most of the heavy-hitting pieces of Schumann are found. I found his playing to be very striking and original. He was definitely not simply just "going through the motions." The dynamics were accentuated quite heavily, and the tempos were also accentuated. In addition, I found that Gieseking has a very sensitive, colorful tone in Schumann that also made him famous in Debussy (in the lyrical sections). Gieseking also captures the white-hot Romanticism and emotionality of these works, displaying Schumann as one of the greatest, red-blooded poets of the Romantic period.

Despite these very good qualities, Gieseking makes tons of mistakes. They are present in every piece. They are little slips, missed notes, and faked chords. I dont know if these errors are due to the Gieseking Method of learning pieces (where one does not practice at the keyboard, but practices away from the keyboard), but they detract from his otherwise intense performance.

I hate to get into recording comparisons, but I would choose Gieseking over several other Schumann interpretations, including Rubinstein and Kissin.

The sound quality of the recordings has quite a lot to be desired. These audio cuts were made in the 1940's, and it shows.

Lastly, my own personal quibble is that Geiseking's breathing is quite audible in every piece. For example, in the Carnaval's Preambule, this breathing is used to count the off-beats between notes. It's an annoyingly small distraction but one nonetheless.

P.S. There is quite a lot of music for two CD's. It's a good buy considering the price.

4 out of 5 stars For Fior fans, a must, though not entirely up to Fior's elevated standard.......2005-12-08

The gaspard is the gem here, worth the high price of admission even. In fact, surprisingly, everything is good here, except the Schumann. And this is from the performer of "the" performance(s) of op 17. The Kreisleriana is weak fingered, there is no other way about it, which is odd because it was recorded during the same performance as the ravel, which is at times miraculous. I have kept thinking maybe this time i'll hear it, giving such a great pianist as Fior the benefit of the doubt, but, everyone has their off days, and even though, i am still glad to have heard this music by one of our generations greatests hands and minds.
It is unfortunate there is not more ravel in fiorentino's discography, from this disc, which inlcudes gaspard, the comp valse sent, prelude, menuet, and a la maniere borodine, they are all top notch performances. The Debussy is also good, the relflects dans l'eau is good by any standards, but for those who really have studied fior's past recordings or have seen him live, it is not quite what you would expect. The estampes are good also. Below is the comp track listing:

2 out of 5 stars The sound is terrible indeed........2003-03-18

I read the last review too late: the sound is indeed terrible. I have been listening to quite a lot of historic recordings like Busoni on the piano, the Liszt's Pupils, Schnabel/Szegeti, Busch/Serkin, Bartok, Rachmaninoff on the piano... etc but none is more unacceptable than this one even in view of it's low price. Go for another version.

2 out of 5 stars Brilliant Performances -- Terrible Sound.......2001-12-31

I don't usually consider myself an audiophile - I'm more concerned with performance than with recording quality. I've loved the Schnabel recordings of Beethoven's piano sonatas for years despite lousy sound, so don't take this as a slight on Schnabel - he's the greatest. If you love Beethoven's piano music and you've not heard his version of the sonatas then you have a real treat in store. Just don't buy this edition.

These CD transfers are really bad. I know they're inexpensive, but they are no bargain, because the music is ruined. At times the sound is just a little muffled and distant (which I could live with to save a few bucks) but then there are passages that sound like you are listening through a garden hose or something. Ack!

Save up and buy the Pearl sets - they sound wonderful (some hiss, but these ARE 78s after all). I did a comparison using Volumes 3 & 4 of this set and the Pearl 'Named Sonatas' sampler and the differences were astonishing. I've not heard the EMI set, which may lie in between sound-wise just as it does price-wise, but I'm still voting for the Pearl sets. Start with the sampler if you have reservations, but check them out!

4 out of 5 stars COMPULSIVE.......2002-04-05

Once bitten with the Michelangeli bug you stay bitten ever after.
These performances are from 1939-1942 when he was hardly more than a boy (born 1920). The recorded quality is not bad for its age, but it rules out a 5* rating, especially in the Chopin waltz, where there is a really weird background effect like somebody gargling. Michelangeli-collectors will not be put off by that, nor by the rather short measure the disc offers -- it would have been short for an LP let alone a CD. Music-lovers completely fresh to the work of this unique artist would probably be well advised to start with something in better sound, but I would not say that this disc is exclusively for collectors. You can still get a surprisingly good impression of that utterly unique tone-quality, even in Reflets dans l'Eau. Michelangeli's Debussy is very individual indeed, highly coloured, big in tone and about as unlike Gieseking or Richter as could well be. You would know who was playing immediately from the Albeniz Malaguena that starts the disc, and you will hear a marvellous bit of smouldering moroseness in the Granados Andaluza. The biggest item here is Chopin's B flat minor scherzo,
and M's great reading is quite similar to the studio recording he
made many years later. The end of the piece epitomises for me one aspect of his playing -- fast, tense, rhythmic, exciting, but not a hair out of place. The last note is the familiar high treble chord as I know it from the other two versions I have (Horowitz, Richter), not the unusual variant that he gives in the studio recording, an octave B flat in the bass played in quite phenomenally exact time. Unless you are a complete play-safer or sound-quality connoisseur I can recommend this wholeheartedly, certainly at the price.
