About the Artist
Renowned naturalist and sound designer Dr. Bernie Krause has traveled the world capturing the soundscapes of exotic natural environments. Dr. Krause began his groundbreaking work in bioacoustics and environmental recording in the late 1960's, and much of his work has been accomplished with techniques and technologies that he personally developed. His "In A Wild Sanctuary" (1970) recording earned a place in history as being the first recording to use environmental sounds as both a central component of orchestration and as a statement about the environment.

Dr. Krause's diverse achievements include 10 recordings for The Nature Company that have enjoyed over $24 million in gross sales over a period of 6 years. Development of the audio technology innovation known as the Intelligent Show System (for public exhibitions and installations), and his Music and Word Series of spoken word documents that include "Ishi - The Last Yahi." Dr. Krause recently published the book "Wild Soundscapes" (2002) that includes a full-length CD featuring a sampling of natural sounds.

Product Description
The basic ambient tracks for this CD were recorded in and around the Sumter National Forest of central South Carolina originally on location for the South Carolina Aquarium (Charlotte). Lang Elliott contributed some of his exquisite recordings of particular bird species that are featured throughout.

CAROLINA WOODS is located to the northwest of Columbia midway across the state and represents a spring soundscape typical of that part of the southeastern United States. It is difficult to record in the eastern US corridor because of the very dense human population and lots of attendant noise (military, commercial and private aircraft as well as traffic and industry). But we managed to capture a few quiet moments of magic over a period of dawns that remind us of what this region must have sounded like just a few short centuries ago.

5 out of 5 stars A Class of its Own.......2003-08-18

I have had the privilege of seeing Marilyn Taylor live, and the sound of her voice on recording is every bit as expressive and entrancing as her face and acting in person.
One senses that Taylor's voice effortlessly negotiates Frazelle's music, which has the quality of folk music set in a classical genre. Taylor instinctively adopts the vernacular and inflection of the characters and makes a (refreshing) departure from traditional lines. As she said about these songs, "My voice sat down in this music. It kicked its shoes off and felt cold bare earth and said, `This is home.'" Taylor indeed brings this "classical" music home to the listener.
Taylor further shows her gifts for stylistic flexibility and interpretive nuance as she brings to life Vardell's and Ward's more traditional music. One can almost see the far off look in her eyes as she whispers love's memories. The strength in her mid-range makes her all the more qualified to communicate such tender poetry. A listener is wrapped around her finger as she sings these stories.

    5 out of 5 stars A Splendid Recording.......2003-08-06

RETURN: ART SONGS FROM NORTH CAROLINA is a splendid recording representing works by three well-respected composers long associated with the state of North Carolina and its musical heritage. Soprano, Marilyn Taylor, brings forth a renewing and highly musical interpretation to each work. Accompanied by first-rate pianist, Robert Brewer, Taylor sings with conviction, warmth, and sensitivity, placing herself and her voice in character for the work she is performing. This recording would serve as an excellent addition to any personal collection or music library.
