About the Artist
According to Susan Withy Hill, she began composing the music for her new CD, Songscapes, in 1976; but in reality, the rich, complex levels of the melodies and emotions contained in Songscapes are a culmination of a lifetime of experiences and musical study. Raised in a highly musical and emotionally charged environment, Susan first sat down at the piano at four years old. Her intuitive talent was noticed and encouraged by her singer/actress/musician mother, Arlene Withy, whose background included touring with John Raitt, Bert Parks and Dorothy Collins as a singer, musical actress and stand-up bass player. After Susans early years of piano study in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, an immersion in the rock/pop culture of the late sixties and early seventies, and a period of study at the MacPhail Center, Susan Withy Hills talents brought her to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. She studied under the intense discipline of Ran Blake, who completely redirected her musical focus toward such influences as Thelonius Monk, Billie Holiday and John Coltrane. The arduous years spent dissecting the melodies, bass lines and harmonies of these jazz giants are evident in the constantly engaging and diverse compositions of Songscapes. Inspired by the free and exciting spirit of her second love, horses (Susan named her production company, Festiv Lady, after her favorite mare) Songscapes moves us by communicating a range of real emotions that touches listeners. This album is the gift of a mysterious, passionate, beautiful and complex woman. Utilizing the skills and talents of some of the areas top musicians, each track is a beautifully crafted, finely executed musical accomplishment. Songscapes is destined to become a classic, a standard that will be listened to for years to come.

..a lost world..a spiritual people..a forgotten mythology. The gods of the anicient Toltecs were, at once, benevolent and unforgiving. These elegant idols demanded sacrifice and passion, prayer and submission. In return they promised a light everlasting, a night of eternal stars and a dreamtime of immeasurable wonder. "TALES FROM THE INCANTINA" is a musical impression of those mystic people in quiet communion with their imperious gods.
