The path of this eclipse took it first over Hawaii, then Mexico, Central America, Columbia, and Brazil. Rusty Crutcher was present in Las Cruces, Baja, Mexico for this total solar eclipse of July 11, 1991.

Humankind has traditionally accounted for eclipses of the Sun in its folklore. Historically, the Sun's total eclipse has been perceived as an ill omen by prophets, soldiers in battle, philosophers, as well as common folk. Their fear and bewilderment is a primal response which parallels the instinctive reactions of animals. During a total eclipse, it is not uncommon for birds to fall from the sky, for flowers to close, and for insects to become silent until the moment of totality, at which point they vocalize as if it were night. Ocean Eclipse is part of Crutcher's Sacred Sites of Music.

Evocative music floats over sounds of the tidal-quieted ocean at Las Cruces, Baja Mexico during the total eclipse of the Sun on July 11, 1991. Evironmental sounds were digitally recorded before, during, and after this longest total solar eclipse until the year 2132. Recorded against the background of a calm sea, Ocean Eclipse is the first 'portrait in sound' of this ecstatic stellar event. At totally, the Sun's eclipse lasted six minutes, 54 seconds.
